A local gem in the Black Hills, the Purple Pie Place was a lovely stop on our way through the region! The place is in a cute Victorian house, adorned with bright purple paint. The server was personable and sweet, and she helped us pick out a great meal. The chicken pot pie was delicious and hearty, but the real treat was the pie we had for dessert. Wonderfully, mouth-wateringly tart with just enough sweetness to encourage another bite, the Strawberry Rhubarb pie was an absolute delight. It really brought a smile to our faces! To top it all off, the prices were very reasonable for the homemade quality. This is a great stopoff for anyone heading through Custer who is even thinking of dinner or dessert. read more

This place have excellent desserts. However, the manager seems very cranky and I could feel like he didn't want to serve us since he sound rude when he was talking to us. He even thought we were in the same group as the other asian ladies which was a very offensive move. The food is good, the service from the female staff is great, but the manager's service isn't great. read more

If I was rating the Purple Pie Place on just its pie I would have given it another star. However, we also had dinner there and we were just a little bit disappointed with dinner. I had the Prime Rib French Dip. Overall it was a nice sandwich, but after all I heard about their pies, I thought their entrees would match their pie's reputation. My wife had the Chicken Pot Pie. It was lacking in flavor and the seasoning was odd. Now about the pie. I love rhubarb pie, not strawberry and rhubarb pie or berry and rhubarb pie, but rhubarb, all by itself, pie . We went there because of their reputation for great pies. I was not disappointed. The crust was flaky, the filling was perfect and the portion was generous. Reminded me of the rhubarb pie my grandma used to make. If I ever pass through Custer SD again, I'm stopping here for pie. read more

Just excellent. I am a pie-baker myself and I was quite impressed -- we had pie and ice cream only but I would have returned several times if we were close to Custer. The cherry pie was not gooey, sweet, few-cherry-type like you find most places. It was packed with fruit and slightly tart. The peanut-butter-pie (recommended to us by a local) was excellent. (We had it twice.) I loved the mixed berry/rhubarb pie, too. The crust is a real star here, too. Nice people, great pie. (I bet their lunches, etc. are great, too, but we had only pie -- 2 days in a row!) read more

This is the best strawberry/rhubarb pie I have ever eaten!! We stop here every visit to the hills and are never disappointed in the pies we bring home. We stopped here on our way to Crazy horse during the motorcycle rally. The food is delicious (try the chicken pot pie) and the pies are outrageously good. I had the raspberry rhubarb jalapeno and my husband had the bumbleberry. I hope they ship to Massachusetts. read more

We drove 40 miles round trip to come here. The ice cream and pie were fine. Pricey and really nothing special. The service was very disappointing. In total we brought 14 people and spent decent money. My brother ordered in front of me and told 2 of the girls several times exactly what he wanted. They made the entire wrong item. He didn't grab it from the counter because he didn't think it was his. The girl then said this is yours and he said this doesnt look like what I ordered because it wasnt. The gentleman who I assume is a manager threw a fit. He grabbed it and accused my brother of lying about what he ordered. The gentlemen then put it to his mouth and started gulping it. It was all down the front of his face and his shirt and he said we dont need to waste product around here very angrily. My brother paid and walked out. I then needed to pay for my order and again the gentleman was grilling the girl at the register about whether she charged my brother for the malt part of his shake. She admitted that she did not. Another fit throwing ensued. I told her please let me pay for the malt which was 25 cents. The whole experience was ridiculous! We all left angry. read more

Just ok. I ordered the Peach Pie a la mode, thinking, "well, we're at a pie place, must be good." Nope. What I got was a large slice of previously frozen peach pie, not even warmed through with vanilla ice cream. I mean, if you're going to freeze your pie at least make sure that it is warm before you serve it. But on the other hand, if you are going to serve frozen pie.... you're not a "Pie Place." read more

We come from a family of bakers and the location was fantastic. We had blackberry pie that had the most flaky crust and a scoop of huckleberry ice cream. The scoop was as large as a double any where else. I can not say enough about this place but parking is small but you should make sure you get there and enjoy the place. read more

Very cool little place. Of course, the pie is very good, but even the lunch was tasty too - straightforward, fresh sandwiches. We had the hot ham and cheese and the turkey panini and enjoyed both. As for the pie? Both the blackberry and coconut cream were great (though I'm a Southerner, and I'm biased - forget the whipped cream and put meringue on that coconut cream pie!). We stopped here after a day at the pool and my mouth is still watering just thinking about how amazing the rhubarb-strawberry pie was! My Grandma used to grow and preserve strawberry/rhubarb so I am a pretty hash critic when it comes to those particular favors. Needless to say; i was pleasantly surprised! Great little local joint with fantastic pie! We had the strawberry rhubarb pie and it was incredible, offered as a slice or whole. You can have it heated or room temp and served a la mode. The sign says Old Fashion ice cream (Blue Bunny brand). The town closes super early for travelers but this place stayed open until 9 pm so it's a great evening dessert place. The inside is really small and they were really busy, tables were dirty and needed some wiping down so we sat outside on a picnic table. paper plates and plastic utensils so nothing fancy but a great local place to support. you can't miss it, it's the big purple house :) read more

As the girls were preparing our ice cream, I watched him train one of the new girls, to make sure we got enough ice cream in the cone. We stumbled upon this place while en route to Custer State Park. The pie was good, but the sign outside stating they have homemade ice cream is misleading. They serve Blue Bell ice cream, which is hardly homemade. If you look up the ingredients for their vanilla, it has about 10 different things in it, including high fructose corn syrup and many preservatives. Real, homemade vanilla ice cream has milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla. Simple and good. Go for the pie, skip the ice cream. Oh, and just like everything else in South Dakota, they will be closed for the season beginning on October 15th, so you might not be able to here until 2010. Seems like the entire state shuts down for some strange reason. read more

We stopped here for dessert after having dinner at another restaurant on the main drag. We thought we had room for dessert until we each ate one of the generous slices of pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. (They have a wide variety of ice cream flavors, but who cares when you're having pie?!) One of us played it safe with blackberry. The crust was flakey, the filling generous. The other had the special - rhubard/raspberry/jalapeño. Who woulda thunk? It was wonderful with just the right amount of burn - nothing vanilla ice cream can't tame! We waited a long time for our lunch but the staff did warn us they were busy and it would take an extra 15-20 minutes. We were all starving but it was a fun place to wait and watch people swarm in for the dessert counter. Food was tasty and the chocolate cream pie was to die for.
