I'm visiting from San Francisco and this is definitely a cool space with a vibe that marries cozy with rustic city-chic. Working while watching the snow through the giant windows wrapping around the entire room is amazing! I ordered a mocha and it came in a giant mug (90s "Friends" coffee shop style) with super creamy, perfect foam. (I used to be a barista so I can be a bit of a snob and get bummed when I see dishwasher soap foam ..*shiver*..) This place is a great gem that I did not at all expect during my weekend visit here. So glad I found it! And bonus points for being open later on Fridays so I don't have to face the snow just yet XD read more

Pure bean is a one of kind coffee shop in Rapid city! The have a variety of coffee drinks with each season they come up with a new drink. I had a Thai coffee and my girlfriend had their peach Hepburn coffee. Both coffees were cold brews and they were great! Staff is friendly and patient. The shop is clean and organized. They sell a lot of merchandise and help sell products from a local artist as well! Definitely a spot to check out if you are cross country driving through this town! read more

So I did a tour of all the local coffee shops in downtown Rapid, and Pure Bean is a very clear favorite. I love that it's a little bit hidden. If you don't see the sign, and you don't know it's there, you may very well miss it. Kinda exclusive. They also have the best coffee, in my opinion. I have yet to be disappointed with their selection. I have tried the Cardigan (latte), Fat Red (latte), and the Nitro Cold Brew Coffee. My favorite was the Cardigan. I feel like there was a pleasant surprise of warm flavors as I sipped it, and the last sips of sea salt foam were a great twist. The Nitro was suuuper smooth. There is an abundance of seating, and a great view of the street from the room in the back. Both times I visited, it was also quite chill and relaxing since there were so few people around. They have the best atmosphere out of all the coffee shops I visited for actually studying and doing work on your laptop. I almost don't want to rave about how great Pure Bean is so I can keep it my little secret, but I have to show my love. It's just an all around special coffee shop. read more

Wow! What a Gem! The Gal running the Register greeted me with a beautiful smile! She was kind sweet and helpful! The Gal making coffee was just as kind, full of great conversation and a True passion for coffee. This alone makes Pure Bean worth 5 stars and a visit....... BUT.... The coffee was Great! They do an amazing job at roasting! My Barista was a true artist, she got the perfect temperature, the perfect texture, and made it pretty with a Heart. It was a really good Breve! Two months ago I had the good fortune of being able to spend a few days in Rapid City. While there, I of course visited the famous nearby attractions, but I started mornings at the city's various independent coffee shops. Now here it is two months later and the feature of that visit remaining most fondly in memory is not Mount Rushmore or even Spearfish Canyon, if you can believe it, but one of those shops, Pure Bean Coffee. Yes, Pure Bean has coffee, coffee that's as good as any I can remember. I regret not having purchased a bag or two before leaving. But I'd rate the atmosphere still higher. The room is open and airy, the baristas quite friendly. Spotting a notice about an upcoming improv performance called "Scared Scriptless." I inquired and was encouraged to return and check it out that evening. So I did. It was great fun, albeit so fast-paced it made my head spin. This, I learned, was a monthly event. I was lucky to have caught it, but it's one of many. I could see several other events were coming up, such as a free photography workshop. So my impression is that Pure Bean seeks to be not just a place to get coffee but a real community center. If I return to Rapid, I will certainly make a beeline back to that establishment. If fortune permitted me to *move* to Rapid, I think Pure Bean would be an entrée to the social life there, a place to make new friends. Seriously, what more could one want from a coffee shop? read more

Third wave coffee as it's supposed to be! Since moving to Rapid City I've been moving through the local coffee shops trying them out. I have found several good ones that I will continue to visit, but I had not found any that I would classify as a proper third wave shop, until now that is. Pure Bean has an excellent style and vibe from the moment you walk in. The two baristas working demonstrated both excellent customer service as well as practiced skill in both the art of pour over as well as pouring a proper latte with good art. I was taking a stroll down memory lane with a good friend of mine this morning, when I remembered fondly the delicious latte that I had a couple of years ago now at Pure Bean. I decided right then and there that I could keep this love affair a secret no longer, and promptly took to Yelp to profess my love for the cup of coffee I had that April morning in 2017. It was cold, I remember. But the temperature of my beverage was just right. One sip of that latte and I was instantly transported back to the trendy San Francisco cafes that I normally frequent. The espresso was smooth, and the flavors were subtle. But the atmosphere was also refined and relaxed. I would be lying if I said that it was what I expected from Rapid City, SD. The service, however, was what I had expected from Rapid City, SD. That is to say, it was warm and welcoming. Everyone was extremely kind and knowledgable about the area and the products, and if I recall correctly, we even received a free drink that was made in error. When you are driving 30+ hours across the country, you are in no position to turn away a free coffee, this is true. But even if I had to be asleep in twenty minutes, I still would have accepted - and consumed, that free beverage. Because it was just that good. So there it is, out in the open. I love Pure Bean. Passing through this town on the way back home, we stopped to get out of car to walk around a bit. The first shop we were inspired to enter happened to be a fly fishing shop. After browsing a bit, we asked for a recommendation on where to go for a good cup of coffee - not Starbucks which has clearly made its presence known around this town. We were directed several blocks away to Pure Bean - we were told that they roasted their own coffee beans and made really good coffee. We thanked the man kindly and proceeded on foot for the several blocks. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by their sign protruding from an old brick building - a former creamery. Further delight ensued as we walked in and looked around. Big open space, great aroma, rather quiet, and also busy up at the counter. Their coffee menu was well displayed. I noticed the name "Cortado" and asked about its preparation. They said they make a double shot of espresso to which they add about an equal amount of steamed milk - much less milk than a latte has. To me on that slightly chilly day, it sounded perfect. And it was. Perfect. My SO ordered a Mocha coffee and loved it (I tried it and loved it, too). He even ordered a second one to take along on the long drive ahead. After learning they baked their own goodies displayed on their counter, we also got a chocolate pistachio biscotti and a chocolate chip cookie. We made the right decision there, too. Both were excellent! Great coffee and a delicious baked treat were the perfect things to stave off the mid-afternoon slump and proceed on on down the road another few hours. Talking with one of the owners (Nick), I learned they're opening another Pure Bean shop this coming November in Sioux Falls, SD. Although it'll be much closer to home than Rapid City, I can't imagine driving there regularly from St. Paul, MN to get my supply of coffee; however, there's certainly the option of ordering beans for home delivery. Fortunately, I won't need that for a little while since a bought a bag of their espresso beans to take home. read more

We came to South Dakota specifically to get away from the completely asinine and out of control restrictions in CA due to C-19. I wanted a taste of the local coffee scene, so we tried Harriet and Oak, which was lovely, first. The next day I wanted to try another awesome coffee place so I checked on Yelp. As I was reading reviews for Pure Bean I came across one bad review from a resident of Portland , OR (shocker, I know). This person was so upset the barista wasn't wearing a mask and talked poorly of the CDC restrictions that they threw their coffee and food away. They then wrote a bad review on Pure Bean's Yelp page. Based on her review, I KNEW this was the place for us! I was so excited to visit an establishment wherein common sense was held in high regard. The building was beautiful and the interior had a nice, airy vibe. I ordered the Cardigan, which was quite tasty, and an amazing looking chocolate cookie, which I was told they make in-house. After taking one bite of the cookie, I had wished I bought two more. The baristas were sweet and friendly. The company even donates to charity. Come in, people! The coffee's fine. If you are so scared of getting sick, you may just want to stay home. SD is not the place for you read more

This place...! (I'm sure you didn't expect it to start like this.) The place, that is Pure Bean... If there's one thing that I'm glad for it's the fact that I've found a great coffee shop. Formerly only a business that was roasting and distributing. These brave souls decided to open a storefront and took up shop in the old Black Hills Vinyl space (after they moved), and oh how glad am I that they did so. As coffee goes they know exactly what they're doing and have become the premier bean that I use for my brew. But I've also ran the course of their menu from their cold brew to lattes to their specialty iced coffees. It's all fantastic. And if coffee isn't your thing then try their small desserts because they are also worth the adventure (Though they only have a modest selection.) The ambience is 'hip' with a little bit of 'ster' but it's what I've come to expect from such businesses. It's full of light, a little rustic, and still has a comfortable feel to it all. The staff is knowledgeable of the science, of their product, and are they more than willing to share it with you. They've fielded a few of my questions and I'm appreciative of the wisdom they've bestowed. So, 'This place...' They have it, and I'm glad to have found it. Great people, a great bit of knowledge amongst them all, and a great product for us to enjoy. That, my fellow Yelp'rs is what makes up Pure Bean. read more

They filled our travel mugs with cold brew and an iced Americano. The brew their own beans and bake their own food. The cold brew is lighter (but more caffeine) and had a lovely flavor. There are not enough good things to say about this place. They roast in house, they bake the goods in house, they are friendly and the drinks are the perfect balance of sweet. It's nice not having to tell the barista "not too sweet." The first day I had the Fat Red, which was delicious, but the second day I had the Cardigan and my husband had the honey lavender. The drinks were so good we went to Terry Peak for the day and on the way home had to stop for a second drink each. The baristas are so friendly, the shop is adorable and this place deserves a stop. We were visiting from New Jersey and really enjoyed our visit here. The barista, Andrew, was super friendly and made us feel very welcome the moment we walked in. I had the Cardigan, which I read from other Yelpers was amazing. And they were right! It was delicious and just the right blend of flavors. It's something unique that you couldn't get elsewhere and I highly recommend trying it. I wish we had found this place sooner on our trip. Growing up with a family of coffee roasters, I have formed a bit of a "snobbery" to the café and coffee world, Pure Bean though, truly doing it right. Coffee is NOT bitter, their air roaster is top notch, espresso machine, one of the best money can buy. Staff is friendly, loving, artistic, and actually cares about what ingredients, temperate and care go into every drink. This is BY FAR one of the best cafés I have been to. Wifi can be slow!
