This place is a little piece of food heaven! Everyone is so kind and helpful. All of the pastries looked and smelled delicious. For our to-go pastries, we went with the guava and cream pastry and the blackberry lemon pie. There are a couple of table options to sit at, and we picked a booth. When you orde food there at the counter, they will give you a number, then one of the kitchen people will bring you your food on a pretty plate. We enjoyed the avocado toast and egg sandwhich. The bread!!! OMG! It's so good! We wanted to get a loaf for the road, but then we would need all sorts of things to eat with it. The kitchen guy kindly brought us proper silverware so we could cut our food to share. The egg sandwich had delicious bread, a yummy egg, and crispy bacon, while the avocado toast was on toasted sourdough with a lot of avocado, pieces of bacon, purple onion, and sprouts. They were both so good that it would be hard to order anything else, but they have one of those menus where I could probably try it all and enjoy it. read more

I have been there many times - to eat or just to buy bread. For bread my favorite is Country White. I slightly prefer the unsliced loaf. It's rustic, thick crunchy crust, chewy, holey with a definite sour taste. Really awesome. All the bread is great, but the Country White is in a class of its own. Pasties are awesome, breakfast food items are excellent, coffee is good. Staff is nice, building is cool. One of my favorites. read more

Well that was delicious. Cute little spot with a large drink menu and all of your sourdough needs. The bread looked delicious but unfortunately I was hopping on a plane so I just got a few pastries. The chocolate croissant was so tasty and a more generous dose of chocolate than many that I've had. So nice and flaky. The morning bun was perfect. It's the best I've had in a long while. Great flavor, nice crisp on the outside, and so soft and flaky inside. The staff was super nice and efficient. If I'm ever back in rapid city I would most definitely be back here. Both were absolutely delicious and I would stop in again for the same order or to try something new. The staff was friendly and the inside space seemed cozy although I didn't eat in. The star of my trip to rapid city! We just loved it here. Delicious treats all made of sour dough! The first time we came, we had the breakfast sandwich with the fluffy egg and bacon. You can choose between the spicy sauce and the truffle-- the spicy was more of a sriracha, not too hot, we preferred the truffle. The sea salt chocolate chip cookies were to die for-- we had to come back a second trip to get more! I also took a loaf of the honey blueberry sour dough back home-- my family said it was the best bread they ever had! The almond croissant was solid. There is areas to sit and relax. The Sour is a true destination bakery - I plan my trips to Rapid City to coincide with their opening hours (e.g. closed Mon/Tues) - and I dream about their sourdough creations in between every visit. Whenever I'm in RC means at least one stop at The Sour for pastries (the sugar-dusted morning bun and the caramel-encased kouing amman are standouts, but the almond croissant and cinnamon rolls are also worthwhile treats) to share with my local family, and another to pick up a loaf or two of bread to bring back to Colorado with me; the Pain de Mie and Oat Porridge loaves are truly delicious for sandwiches or morning toast, and they freeze well if you overbuy, as I typically do. And let's not forget the lovely cafe workers! Oh my goodness, the service is great - so welcoming and helpful, even when there is a line. On my last visit I learned that their tea and coffee drinks are delightful, too - and it's no problem to take anything to go, since the cafe tables fill up quickly on the weekends. read more

What a great bakery. Everything is made with starter including the pastries which is quite unique. This bakery is as good as the best we have found in the Seattle area. Everything was super fresh, great texture, and great flavor. We even bought a loaf of bread and took it home with us. I have definitely had a better sourdough loaf, but it was still great quality and made amazing sandwiches back at home. You can't go wrong with any of the pastries. We tried the blueberry cheesecake brioche, the cinnamon roll, the kouign amann, and others. Excellent. read more

We're locals and longtime fans of The Sour. It's always been a must stop for friends and family when they visit. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was disappointing. Two out of four people in our group ordered the quiche. After paying and sitting down, a staff member brought out one breakfast sandwich and informed us they were out of quiche ($7.50) but could offer a breakfast bun instead ($6.50). We asked to speak with the manager. A bit later, another employee brought two of our drinks and said she was there to "settle the quiche issue." We explained that we understood the breakfast bun offer, but we preferred to get the regular breakfast sandwich ($8.50) and were willing to pay any difference. She told us the owner would be upset if she gave us a breakfast sandwich, but she could not add brisket to it. We declined brisket, explaining we only wanted the breakfast sandwich as advertised. We also mentioned we'd be happy to speak with the owner if needed. She walked away, and we never heard from the owner, though we did eventually receive two breakfast sandwiches. As locals who truly enjoy this place, I was disappointed that the staff debated with us over what amounted to a $2 difference. It felt like an unnecessary and uncomfortable situation that could have been handled with more care. read more

One of the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever had, and the coffee was amazing (my family had regular drip, miso caramel americano, and a mocha latte with oatmilk). The BEC sandwich was a pass for us, and the sourdough pastries were ok, but I think I've discovered I'm less of a fan of sourdough donuts and croissants vs. regular ones. The bread is fantastic, and if that's all you're coming for, definitely stop by. As far as a cafe goes, I wanted to love this place, but it's honestly confusing to order from. The sandwich I got was tasty, but I needed help from the cashier to get to it (apparently there's no point in looking at the menu on the wall, because they only offer the food that's left in the display.) They could benefit from more signs, or at least a clarification that food isn't made to order. read more

Almost every time I've been here it's nearly empty yet takes over 10 minutes for my latte to be delivered and on 2 occasions they gave me the wrong drink and had to remake it. Spectacular renovation of an old building. Stunning oak floors. Great sunlight pours through the front windows and bounces off beautiful whitewashed brick walls. The service was exceptional from the people caring for us. Efficient, caring and comfortable. When we're in a bakery, most important is the product. Almond croissant, big enough to share and flawlessly light and crispy on the outside. Inside was soft, warm and perfectly filled with almond paste. The mushroom pasty was another contrast of textures with an umami rich filling of steak and mushrooms. The atmosphere was nice, with a modern industrial feel. The counter service was fine. There was delivery, but no table service. They had a bowl of self-service water and napkins. I bought a $12.50 loaf of sliced jalapeño and cheddar bread that I haven't tried yet. The $12.50 cold turkey/pesto sandwich would have been good, except they put a thick layer of cold soggy bacon on it. Yuck! I wanted turkey, not ham. The chairs are not very comfortable for bigger bottoms either. There were not options. I won't eat there again. read more
