The first time I visited this Punto Rojo, I ended up walking out with my party. We were waiting to be served but we were ignored. This was three years ago. I decided to try them again. The service this time was very satisfactory. The restaurant itself is a smaller than the Glen Cove location but there are tables for dine in services. It seemed to be clean both times when I visited. There is plenty of parking in the lot, just be careful pulling in and out of the lot. I ended up ordering chicken empanadas, Hawaiian empanadas, chicharron, guacamole, and plantains. Yes, I know Hawaiian empanadas are not authentic but my brain wanted it. I've ordered from the Glen Cove Punto Rojo location many times in the past. Unfortunately, I think I prefer them over the Hicksville location. The food wasn't as flavorful and needed more seasonings. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I'll be back in this location. I came here on a whim after being close by and being recommending their tres leches cake. I ordered and hot chocolate and tres leches cake. While the hot chocolate was extremely delicious (reminds me of Jamaican chocolate tea), I wasn't in love with the tres leches cake. This wasn't due to it tasting bad but more up to personal preference. Their cake is on the sweeter side as the sponge cake is sweet, the milk is sweet, and there's a caramel/dulce de lèche filling in between the two sponge cake pieces. It also had a whipped topping with cinnamon and a cherry on top. While when I first ate it, I wasn't a fan, it was more appealing when I ate the rest the next day. That could partially be to my expectation for the cake being adjusted, as well as more time for the cake to soak up the milk it was sitting in. Despite that, I'd be willing to come back and try it again as this would likely be a treat I would need to crave to enjoy just because it's super sweet for my taste. However, I can definitely see why others love it. They also have indoor seating and it's more informal but they do have wait staff to serve you. As far as service, they never checked up on me. When it was time to pay the bill I wasn't even sure if I was paying at the table or register since no one came to me after I got my dessert and I was served in to-go containers. (That part confused me since other customers had their food on regular plates but I gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed that was due to what I had ordered.) For the 2-3 hours I was there hanging out, there were people constantly in and out to buy/eat food. Came here for a quick lunch during my break. After moving to Long Island it is quite difficult to find a Spanish restaurant. I found this restaurant on google. When I arrived, I was immediately greeted. There are some people behind the counter that speak English but they speak mostly Spanish. I do speak Spanish, but it was good to know that there are other people that can speak English, because I wanted to share this restaurant with my colleagues at work and they do not speak Spanish. Everyone was friendly, kind, and helpful. I ordered the special of the day which was caldo de res (beef soup)- there is an option to order it "Complete" which comes with rice topped with beef stew, macaroni salad, and plantain. I got a Colombiana soda to go with it and it was perfect!!! it was nice, clean, bright inside and the bakery is to die for. Unfortunately, my palate could not have been more disappointed here. I have no idea what they handed me in terms of these giant brown/yellow balls of dough. Not the best place to eat Colombian food, there are way better places to eat than at this restaurant. I have always come to Punto Rojo in the past to buy their tres leche cakes or any bakery goods, which are great! It took them 10 minutes to seat me down when the restaurant was finally slowing down and available tables started to open up. The tables were disgusting to the point where I had to ask the staff to please wipe down the table. My waitress didn't seem interested in checking up on us or ask if we needed anything. It was hard to get her attention; it got to the point where I started asking other waitresses to help get me napkins or the check etc. as mine was nowhere to be found. Food was okay, I had order their bandeja paisa which a traditional Colombian dish which consists of rice, black beans, arepa, chorizo, steak, and egg. If you are looking for a better Colombian restaurant, I highly recommend La Pecosa in East Meadow!! It is small but the staff there is always kind and amazing and so is the food!! Went in for breakfast and it will be our go to breakfast place from now on. We have ordered takeout previously during the pandemic and it was good then. Here, the quantity and quality are far better than the regularly run of the mill diner breakfasts. The quantity was enough for 2 meals. The food was so good my picky son was portion controlling the leftovers for it to last. The rice and beans were perfect, flavorful and very filling. The breakfast steak was done well, flat and seasoned just enough. The chorizo was the best. It wasn't like the typical store bought ones. This was not too fatty nor salty. Something all Yelpers have in common, is that we are fans of food. More specifically, good food. That's why when my brother recommended "Punto Rojo" I thought he must have been Yelping as long as I have. It's a small store front located in a decent sized shopping strip. We found parking quickly and waisted no time trying to get in. That's because there was a line starting to form. This must be the only Columbian bakery slash restaurant in town. Inside is modern and festive. They have loud popular columbian music playing. They have well lit red ceilings (my favorite color). And they have booth seating. It feel more like a club than anything. The line was long so we waited a bit to order. Once we got to the counter we looked over our choices. There was a small issue with communication, but everything I asked for was delivered. When we sat down to eat, I started with the cheese empanada. It was definitely worth the wait! The empanada was flaky and the cheese was flavorful on its on. It was incredible. The sausage was just as good. It had a unique flavor, that I never had before. I couldn't put my fork down. I definitely made my way back to the counter for another empanada. I was last here just a few days ago for lunch, and had their beef sancocho which was delicious! I ordered the complete version which came with a bowl of broth, filled with yucca, potatoes, plantains, corn, and carrots, as well as a huge plate of white rice, sweet plantain, stewed beef, and salad. The food portions were huge, and so tasty. I could not finish my meal, and ended up taking leftovers home, which resulted in another 2 meals for me. Great little Colombian restaurant and bakery located in a strip mall in the town of Hicksville, Parking is a plenty which is a plus. The cakes are decorated with bright and vibrant colors, if I could eat with my eyes, I would have devoured all the baked goods without feeling any guilt. This place exudes cleanliness as well. The menu flows nicely and they include pictures with most of the popular dishes. They serve a hearty Columbian breakfast like Huevos Rancheros. We decided to order the special for that day, Sancho de res. A set meal which includes beef soup, beef stew, rice, salad and sweet plantains. Let me tell you something the soup in itself is a meal. The soup bowl was huge! Like I can wash both my hands at the same time huge. The soup was filled with beef, potatoes, corn and carrots. The soup was flavorful though a little on the fat side, but boy it was packed with flavor. The beef stew had a few pieces that were tough but overall the meal was spot on delicious. The waitress was friendly and came back to check on us to see if we needed anything else. I was so stuffed but I had to have dessert. I mean this is a bakery as well, I couldn't just leave without satisfying my sweet tooth. So I bought a few pieces to try back at the office. A slice of cheesecake, Napoleon and chocolate cake. It may appear excessive for one person to eat 3 slices of cake, but I am willing to share and in the interest of science I incorporated the "Scientific Method" to see how good these cakes were. I had to have a "control group" for the cake population to test and see if my hypotheses held true. My hypotheses was correct, the cakes were moist and more importantly delicious!! And if you remember the scientific method, always repeat the test to back up your theory more than once. I definitely will be back! I hit up Punto Rojo again last night for dinner with some friends. Place wasn't as packed as we've found it during lunch time on the weekends. Always look forward to eating their large platters. I ordered a grilled pork loin platter meal (forget which number it was) that comes with salad, rice, beans, and plantain. It was $11.99. As noted in my previous review, I'm always fearful of them overcooking my food, and it happened again to an even greater degree this go round. The pork was unforgivably tough and it was a chore sawing through it. I wouldn't harp on this if I didn't experience it multiple times before, but I was terribly disappointed. I've been here about 5-6 times now, and the food has been overcooked almost every single time. In addition, this particular meal didn't come with as much food as I've gotten in the past, so I was still kind of hungry after I finished. The salad, rice and beans, and plantains were solid as usual, so that is a plus. I have to say that service here is usually very good; the girls here are very nice and courteous. In addition, the pastries here are pretty good; that tres leche cake is bomb status and the other cake pieces I've tried have been enjoyable. I would say that the huge menu and generous portions are strengths as well. I was practically drooling as I watched the rest of my table eat their food while I only got empanadas and plantains. Definitely get the corn tortilla empanadas rather than the flour for a nice crunch and better flavor. I tried a bite of the chicharron and it was pretty dry, probably fried too long. I noticed that they have a display with premade chicharrones just sitting there. There's also a bakery section with Columbian pastries and Italian cookies. I got some cookies for 3/$1 and 2/$1.
