I visited Punto Rojo to order takeout. The restaurant appeared clean and the service was fast. However, after getting home and eating dinner, my stomach started hurting. While the chicken was juicy, the steak was very dry and chewy. The pork did not taste fresh. We have ordered from here before and it's usually been okay, but this experience was disappointing.

The first time I visited this Punto Rojo, I ended up walking out with my party. We were waiting to be served but we were ignored. This was three years ago. I decided to try them again. The service this time was very satisfactory. The restaurant itself is a smaller than the Glen Cove location but there are tables for dine in services. It seemed to be clean both times when I visited. There is plenty of parking in the lot, just be careful pulling in and out of the lot. I ended up ordering chicken empanadas, Hawaiian empanadas, chicharron, guacamole, and plantains. Yes, I know Hawaiian empanadas are not authentic but my brain wanted it. I've ordered from the Glen Cove Punto Rojo location many times in the past. Unfortunately, I think I prefer them over the Hicksville location. The food wasn't as flavorful and needed more seasonings. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I'll be back in this location. If I am, I'll be sure to try the pastries and their more traditional entrees and update this review. read more

I came here on a whim after being close by and being recommending their tres leches cake. I ordered and hot chocolate and tres leches cake. While the hot chocolate was extremely delicious (reminds me of Jamaican chocolate tea), I wasn't in love with the tres leches cake. This wasn't due to it tasting bad but more up to personal preference. Their cake is on the sweeter side as the sponge cake is sweet, the milk is sweet, and there's a caramel/dulce de lèche filling in between the two sponge cake pieces. It also had a whipped topping with cinnamon and a cherry on top. While when I first ate it, I wasn't a fan, it was more appealing when I ate the rest the next day. That could partially be to my expectation for the cake being adjusted, as well as more time for the cake to soak up the milk it was sitting in. Despite that, I'd be willing to come back and try it again as this would likely be a treat I would need to crave to enjoy just because it's super sweet for my taste. However, I can definitely see why others love it. They also have indoor seating and it's more informal but they do have wait staff to serve you. As far as service, they never checked up on me. When it was time to pay the bill I wasn't even sure if I was paying at the table or register since no one came to me after I got my dessert and I was served in to-go containers. (That part confused me since other customers had their food on regular plates but I gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed that was due to what I had ordered.) For the 2-3 hours I was there hanging out, there were people constantly in and out to buy/eat food. Their food smelled really good and I'd be willing to come back to try their other selections. read more

Came here for a quick lunch during my break. After moving to Long Island it is quite difficult to find a Spanish restaurant. I found this restaurant on google. When I arrived, I was immediately greeted. There are some people behind the counter that speak English but they speak mostly Spanish. I do speak Spanish, but it was good to know that there are other people that can speak English, because I wanted to share this restaurant with my colleagues at work and they do not speak Spanish. Everyone was friendly, kind, and helpful. I ordered the special of the day which was caldo de res (beef soup)- there is an option to order it "Complete" which comes with rice topped with beef stew, macaroni salad, and plantain. I got a Colombiana soda to go with it and it was perfect!!! it was nice, clean, bright inside and the bakery is to die for. I didn't get to take pictures of the empanadas and pan de queso I bought, but it's a MUST have. I would love to try their cakes next time, it looked so good!! they have a whole pastry/bread section. Definitely recommend this place read more

Our office used to order from Punto Rojo years ago, but since I stopped working there, no yummy food for me. I was in the area today, so I decided to try it again. So good! I got the Mini Bandeja, and it was just the right amount of food for me. The empanadas looked so good that I got 2 of them. If you are in the area, please check them out. It's worth the visit. Plenty of parking. Friendly staff. They have seating, but I got my order to go. read more

This is hands down my fav Colombian restaurant. The food is always fresh and hot! & in my opinion you get SO much food for the price they offer. I went in and got a mini bendaja. I haven't had one in a while and I'm glad I decided this. chicharron is always so crunchy!!! The steak is flavorful. The rice is always cooked to perfection and don't get me started on the hot sauce !! I really love this hot sauce. I was told it's in house recipe. Don't ever change this recipe !! Incase anyone didn't know they also sell bigger containers of their hot sauce! I'm so happy there's a location near my job In queens. I'll prob be back Thursday for their soup of the day! highly recommend ajaico soup! read more

Best damn cake you will ever have! Tres leches cake is so delicious, the cream topping is artificial tasting, I just scrap that off. As for the food, it's tasty but it lacks seasoning. The service is amazing, really nice people working there. ***Also your check includes gratuity which is sneaking thinking you need to add it but only realized after I left that I double tip. Wish they highlight it or make a point. read more

I just ate sooooo much for $24. Steak, chicken, arepas, rice, beans, avocado, pork, an egg. I'm sure I'm missing something. It was fantastic. Everything had great flavor and the variety is fantastic. I've been here in the past for the bakery items which I've also thoroughly enjoyed. Don't know why I waited so long to come back. I won't make that mistake again. Servers are pleasant and quick, atmosphere is what you'd expect and of course the food. Good times. read more

I just returned from Cartagena and Medellin in Colombia and I had a craving for more of that delicious cuisine including some Bunuelos. Unfortunately, my palate could not have been more disappointed here. I have no idea what they handed me in terms of these giant brown/yellow balls of dough. But they did not resemble, especially in taste, what I experienced. Dry, tasteless and somewhat white inside. Even my toaster could not save them; and I sadly purchased several. The arepas here and not much better. Tasteless flat limp corn cakes. Pan de queso is decent, but there are better options for Colombian treats not far. read more

Not the best place to eat Colombian food, there are way better places to eat than at this restaurant. I have always come to Punto Rojo in the past to buy their tres leche cakes or any bakery goods, which are great! I decided to eat here for the first time and I won't be returning for the meals anymore. It took them 10 minutes to seat me down when the restaurant was finally slowing down and available tables started to open up. The tables were disgusting to the point where I had to ask the staff to please wipe down the table. My waitress didn't seem interested in checking up on us or ask if we needed anything. It was hard to get her attention; it got to the point where I started asking other waitresses to help get me napkins or the check etc. as mine was nowhere to be found. Food was okay, I had order their bandeja paisa which a traditional Colombian dish which consists of rice, black beans, arepa, chorizo, steak, and egg. If you are looking for a better Colombian restaurant, I highly recommend La Pecosa in East Meadow!! It is small but the staff there is always kind and amazing and so is the food!! I would only recommend the bakery for Punto rojo. read more

Went in for breakfast and it will be our go to breakfast place from now on. We have ordered takeout previously during the pandemic and it was good then. Here, the quantity and quality are far better than the regularly run of the mill diner breakfasts. The quantity was enough for 2 meals. The food was so good my picky son was portion controlling the leftovers for it to last. The rice and beans were perfect, flavorful and very filling. The breakfast steak was done well, flat and seasoned just enough. The chorizo was the best. It wasn't like the typical store bought ones. This was not too fatty nor salty. Service was great, quick and to the point. There weren't many people sitting in the dining area, but there was a steady flow of customers taking to go. This place must be good if Spanish language teachers had made this restaurant a topic. We also bumped into a Spanish teacher while there. Oh don't forget the pastries. The flan and the tiramisu tres leche looking pastries hit the spot. The pastries were not overly sweet nor too heavy. Definitely a great bang for the buck place. read more

Something all Yelpers have in common, is that we are fans of food. More specifically, good food. That's why when my brother recommended "Punto Rojo" I thought he must have been Yelping as long as I have. It's a small store front located in a decent sized shopping strip. We found parking quickly and waisted no time trying to get in. That's because there was a line starting to form. This must be the only Columbian bakery slash restaurant in town. Inside is modern and festive. They have loud popular columbian music playing. They have well lit red ceilings (my favorite color). And they have booth seating. It feel more like a club than anything. The line was long so we waited a bit to order. Once we got to the counter we looked over our choices. There was a small issue with communication, but everything I asked for was delivered. When we sat down to eat, I started with the cheese empanada. It was definitely worth the wait! The empanada was flaky and the cheese was flavorful on its on. It was incredible. The sausage was just as good. It had a unique flavor, that I never had before. I couldn't put my fork down. I definitely made my way back to the counter for another empanada. I can positively say I will be back. Safe to say my brother doesn't Yelp, but he knows good food. I guess I'm rubbing off on him. read more

This place really needs to get way more recognition because it's honestly very good. I have been here on multiple occasions, for both lunch and dinner, and I have enjoyed every meal I have had. I was last here just a few days ago for lunch, and had their beef sancocho which was delicious! I ordered the complete version which came with a bowl of broth, filled with yucca, potatoes, plantains, corn, and carrots, as well as a huge plate of white rice, sweet plantain, stewed beef, and salad. The food portions were huge, and so tasty. I could not finish my meal, and ended up taking leftovers home, which resulted in another 2 meals for me. Their pricing is so fair and the food is delicious. I definitely recommend checking them out. read more

Came here for dinner with family on a Friday night. I have to say I had low expectations given my past experiences eating in this part of town. This one pleasantly surprised me. Everything we ordered was fresh and tasty and the portions were huge. I had the grilled chicken and it was very juicy. Our young waiter was sweet, attentive, and helpful. They even make Colombian torta negra which is a like fruit cake except it's not dense. This one had walnuts in it and because of my nut allergy I couldn't try it but I was told it was really good and fresh. read more

Have ordered takeout from Punto Rojo a handful of times for family get-togethers. Depending on your selections, you may end up with a mini Bandeja with dried pork belly and an overcooked over-easy egg, or delicious camarones in garlic sauce accompanied by dry fries and aromatic rice. It's a hit or miss. Steak can be cooked to perfection or far from what was requested, but when it's good, it's really good. So, decide now if you want to take your chances! read more

Great little Colombian restaurant and bakery located in a strip mall in the town of Hicksville, Parking is a plenty which is a plus. As you walk in your eyes are drawn to the the vivid bright red colors that drape the restaurant walls and tables. On the bakery end beautiful cakes, pastries and savory items on display like empenadas and blood sausage. The cakes are decorated with bright and vibrant colors, if I could eat with my eyes, I would have devoured all the baked goods without feeling any guilt. This place exudes cleanliness as well. The menu flows nicely and they include pictures with most of the popular dishes. They serve a hearty Columbian breakfast like Huevos Rancheros. We decided to order the special for that day, Sancho de res. A set meal which includes beef soup, beef stew, rice, salad and sweet plantains. Let me tell you something the soup in itself is a meal. The soup bowl was huge! Like I can wash both my hands at the same time huge. The soup was filled with beef, potatoes, corn and carrots. The soup was flavorful though a little on the fat side, but boy it was packed with flavor. The beef stew had a few pieces that were tough but overall the meal was spot on delicious. The waitress was friendly and came back to check on us to see if we needed anything else. I was so stuffed but I had to have dessert. I mean this is a bakery as well, I couldn't just leave without satisfying my sweet tooth. So I bought a few pieces to try back at the office. A slice of cheesecake, Napoleon and chocolate cake. It may appear excessive for one person to eat 3 slices of cake, but I am willing to share and in the interest of science I incorporated the "Scientific Method" to see how good these cakes were. I had to have a "control group" for the cake population to test and see if my hypotheses held true. My hypotheses was correct, the cakes were moist and more importantly delicious!! And if you remember the scientific method, always repeat the test to back up your theory more than once. I definitely will be back! Great food, reasonable prices and a bakery that is visual tantalizingly and has passed the scrutiny of at least one scientific individual, not to mention it's pretty yummy for your tummy as well. read more

I hit up Punto Rojo again last night for dinner with some friends. Place wasn't as packed as we've found it during lunch time on the weekends. Always look forward to eating their large platters. I ordered a grilled pork loin platter meal (forget which number it was) that comes with salad, rice, beans, and plantain. It was $11.99. As noted in my previous review, I'm always fearful of them overcooking my food, and it happened again to an even greater degree this go round. The pork was unforgivably tough and it was a chore sawing through it. I wouldn't harp on this if I didn't experience it multiple times before, but I was terribly disappointed. I've been here about 5-6 times now, and the food has been overcooked almost every single time. In addition, this particular meal didn't come with as much food as I've gotten in the past, so I was still kind of hungry after I finished. The salad, rice and beans, and plantains were solid as usual, so that is a plus. I have to say that service here is usually very good; the girls here are very nice and courteous. In addition, the pastries here are pretty good; that tres leche cake is bomb status and the other cake pieces I've tried have been enjoyable. I would say that the huge menu and generous portions are strengths as well. With this said, I'll probably stick with places nearby like Pollos and Paisa down the road if I want Colombian food in the future. read more

A really great Colombian bakery in Hicksville. Stuck in a shopping center. Most don't even know if it's around unless someone tells you or you've looked here on Yelp. Inside is small but stuffed with all sorts of pastries and food. I've never had anything bad here. Arepas are to die for, delicious and filling empanadas, yummy sweets. The prices are fair, they get you in and out quickly. There are a few tables and chairs if you want to dine-in but it's more of a grab & go type place. Excellent authentic Columbian food for a great price! They have huge platters for breakfast and lunch that could honestly feed like 2 people. I was practically drooling as I watched the rest of my table eat their food while I only got empanadas and plantains. Definitely get the corn tortilla empanadas rather than the flour for a nice crunch and better flavor. I tried a bite of the chicharron and it was pretty dry, probably fried too long. I noticed that they have a display with premade chicharrones just sitting there. There's also a bakery section with Columbian pastries and Italian cookies. I got some cookies for 3/$1 and 2/$1. Worth a try if you're really craving it since they're so inexpensive but I've had better ones for sure. read more
