I just recently moved to Houston nothing like having food that makes you feel at home, hands-down best Peruvian, food, and all of Houston.

El Bitute Peruvian cuisine - Lomo Saltado

We stopped at the food truck park for a different truck but since they were closed and we can never…read moreturn down empanadas, we gave El Bitute a try. And boy am I glad we did! The beef empanadas were delicious and the addition of a light sprinkling of powdered sugar was inspired. Added a whole other profile to the fried goodness. The causa was a new item for me. Think tuna salad and mashed potato casserole served cold, but as a light and refreshing dish, with some crema on top. This would be a perfect dish for any backyard mixer or bbq. The plantains were perfectly fried, soft and sweet and savory and crispy.

Because this was a solid rendition of lomo saltado…read more --- --- --- I fell in love with lomo saltado while living in Tampa for the last 15 years, where I felt like we had a pretty decent contingent of Peruvian restaurants. When I found this food truck on Yelp with a perfect 5-star average, I knew I wanted to get here soon. After several weekends in a row of not making my way over, I finally got a chance to experience it. The verdict: it definitely hit the spot, but I do think I've had a bit better. The meat was seasoned well and the flavors were on point, but I think the super thick cut fries is what I didn't love. They were a bit much - I'd prefer a more standard size fry as the thick ones are a bit dry in the middle. But I definitely want to come back and try the paella sometime and will be sure to do so!

This time I called in an order for tallarines saltados and two whole chickens for my family. They told me it would be ready in an hour, which was fine. When I arrived to pick it up, the owner handed me the food and casually said he replaced my tallarines with lomo saltado -- without asking me first. He said it was "a better choice" and that they were out of tallarines. I told him clearly that I did not want lomo saltado, but he kept insisting, so I just took it to avoid arguing. When we got home, the real problem started -- both chickens were undercooked, tough, and hard to chew. It was so bad that I told my kids and family not to eat any of it, and I ended up throwing everything in the trash. I paid good money for this meal, and we didn't get to eat at all. Changing an order without consent and serving raw chicken is not acceptable. I won't be coming back.

The service and communication could definitely be improved; asking basic questions about the menu or looking for guidance felt a bit uncomfortable, as if it was an inconvenience to the staff. During my most recent visit, I was even told my order was "weird," which threw me off. They were also out of sauce, which made a noticeable difference because the rice was pretty dry and really needed that added flavor. Without it, the dish tasted a bit like leftovers. The chicken was cooked well and smelled great, but the flavor didn't quite match the aroma. I really wanted to like this place, and I gave it multiple tries, but the overall experience just hasn't been what I hoped for.
