First experience with a storage unit and it was incredibly frustrating, to say the least. I finally moved out yesterday after 5 months. As others have mentioned, it's super easy to sign up online and book your unit. This is probably where the pros end. Now for the cons: - Parking. What a disaster.... the lot is incredibly tiny to begin with, so if there's a moving truck already there, good luck. However, there has been constant construction happening next door, so the parking lot is non-existent. The last few times I've come here, I had to find street parking. When moving my stuff out yesterday, we had to park on Northern Blvd blocking the bike lane cause the construction guys wouldn't let us in to the parking lot, and there was a giant truck already there. - One of the elevators has been down for months so you need to use the one at the far end of the building. - I had a unit on the 6th floor. It's advertised as climate controlled but that's debatable. I went there over the summer and it was HOT. - Prices went up after a few months, to be expected. But when there are no improvements being made along with the inconvenience of no parking and elevators being down for months, this place just is not worth it. Save your money and go to any of the other storage places in the area. read more

I set up my account through Public Storage's online customer service. I explained to the agent who I spoke with that: i. I needed a small box to store six 52lb boxes ii. A shipper was going to be delivering my things iii. I needed the spot for two weeks The person booked a very large unit and assured me that Public Storage receives shipper deliveries every time, and I'll be good. Plus I can always cancel at no penalty. This was a phone call and the agent was persistent.. so I signed the document on the phone. The interesting part: On August 21, I got a call from an uncouth staff of the 31-08 Northern Boulevard location, informing me that the shipper was with my things and I need to be available right now to pick it up. I explain that I'm at work, but I can be there in 15 minutes... please help me hold the six 52lb boxes. The agent who sold me this unit said it's okay. She starts speaking out of manner... She goes: you spoke to an agent, but this is the property and we "don't" receive people's packages. I'm like I don't know what to do, I'm working off the info I got from your colleague, and she goes you had a lease document. Why didn't you read it. She said I'll have to figure it out. Long story short, the shipper returned six 52lb boxes back to my Chicago shipping address. I called this location to explain what happened and the rude supervisor's retort was "so do you want me to vacate the unit?" I said vacate the unit, and please I want a complete refund. The supervisor goes "you are not getting no refund asides from the lock fee" and hangs up. I don't know who is ready for the stress and pain I've been through with these folks, but in my life, I would never be using them again.. There are better options. read more

I had the most fantastic experience with Peter at this location. I was a mess and moved out of my entire apartment in one day, on top of having time constraints and only arriving an hour and a half before closing. I had double-booked two containers, and he could not have possibly been kinder, more patient, and more helpful within the time and limitations to help me get settled into my unit, set up, and moved in. He was a lifesaver in this situation, and this location is very lucky to have someone so personable and helpful beyond their pay. read more

RAT INFESTATION!!!!! For the past year my things were stored while out of state. I came yesterday to pick up my belongings and EVERYTHING WAS DESTROYED from water damage and VERMIN. Literally there were rat droppings EVERYWHERE it was disgusting it looked like a colony of rats had been living in my unit. there was other visible staining from vermin as well. The rats chewed through clothing and destroyed my property. As I was attempting to look through my unit a woman with a unit above mine came and it looks like she was storing food and other trash in the unit above mine (possibly living out of it). I have insurance but seems like it will only cover $250 of damages. Not sure about water damage coverage yet. My main issue is I want to be reimbursed for rent paid. The company is claiming they don't do this. I will be looking into legal action. In the mean time. DONT RENT HERE!!!!!! MAJOR RAT PROBLEM!!!!! If I could give this place 0 stars I would. When I arrived, my storage unit looked so horrible, and the walls between my unit and the other units were made of cardboard, literal boxes stapled together. The bottom of the floor was eaten like they have rats. When I complained the first worker was so passive and didn't care, responded by saying "ok what do you want me to do about it" with a sarcastic tone. A week later on the phone with another women, I was telling her the state of the room again, and she kept talking over me and not listening to what I'm saying and just talking about rates when I was trying to inquire about the safety of that room. She then turns to her coworker and calls me crazy, not realizing that she's literally ignoring my question and my words. She then PASSIVELY kept quiet, I asked my question and she answered it but then kept quiet not speaking at all because "she wanted to give me space to say what I needed to say" Not only is this building questionable and horrifying, but the customer service is so unbelievably, I am unsure how this building is still operating. I rarely write reviews, but do yourself a favor and skip this location. read more

First they deserve one star because signing up is extremely easy. Everything is done online and with codes. This makes signing up extremely painless. Now they deserve one star because the hours, location, broken elevator, codes o. Bathrooms that don't work and lack of garbage cans. The two black American men that work there are amazing. They should definitely have them handle the customers because the woman there is absolutely AWFUL. Her attitude is worse than her eyebrows. The lack of humanity, kindness or respect is just the start. She isn't helpful, she is NOT professional whatsoever. Very abrasive and aggressive. Doesn't adhere to the rules or contracts that we sign. Oh, wait she does when she is trying to go home or make your life difficult. The doors have to stay open, fine. That's impossible when you are renting a top facility and the pipes are in the way and the mobile stairs are in the way as well. You literally have to limbo. Absolutely ridiculous. No one helps you, that manager sits on her wide rump being angry while the elevators don't work. Anyway, I am going to rent for the month and move my things to a different facility. Very disappointed with Public Storage's unscrupulous business practices. They sucker you in with a promotional rate only to jack up the rental by 25% after 6 months at which point it's not cost effective to move your property to a different warehouse. I understand business costs go up with inflation, but a 25% jump is absurd and not a way to build a long-term relationship with customers. Wish I would have done more research about them prior to my patronage. read more

I met with friendly Storage Representative, Jamie to get information on renting out a storage space. Jamie, was polite and she explained to me my options. With her help and her explanation, I was able to rent, a nice size storage for good price in 15 mins and started to move my stuff. She also taught me how to use Public Storage app which made the process of getting into building very easily and conveniently. Do not use this company, especially this location. they are unprofessional, they are unhelpful, and teying to rent a simple storage unit is a very frustrating experience that ends up with you being rented a unit that's totally the wrong size, even though they claimed it was larger. For 2 days we are unable to get access to our storage units, because the elevator is out of service. Now they are saying that it may be a week and we can not use the stairs. The district manager is not responding to calls or messages. Come the 1st they will want their full rent. Worst experience ever. The manager I talked to via phone was so rude and so mad. Why couldn't she just at least remain calm at her workplace? And she refused to let me move in because of some tech issues with my account. So I said I can rent another unit even without the discount. And she said no. I was like??? I'm so confused why Public Storage hired so unprofessional people. Additionally, I shared my experience with someone from the company. And the person insisted that they did their part. Yeah, you did your part, so that I couldn't move in on time, I had to drive half an hour to find another storage, and I missed my flight and I had to spend around $500 to buy a new ticket. I'm moving to a new place but it's also smaller so I needed storage space fast. This location is laughable. There is no climate control whatsoever. An employee showed me rooms in a couple of floors last week and the temperature range from the 2 floors they showed me went from cool to 90F! I noticed one of the elevators was out of service too. When asked how often that happens they seemed indifferent and grey about this and gave robotic replies. Makes me think it's not a rare occurrence. I thanked her for her time but it was a big NO. Luckily I went to CubeSmart across the street. It was a better atmosphere, climate controlled, and the employees sounded more professional. I have storage space, thank goodness! read more

We chose this particular storage because of the good signing offer and because of how close it was to our apartment. 2 years ago, it was open until 8...then the rate increased but their hours cut back to 7pm...which is cutting it close if we need to get something after work (we work in Manhattan) and it's a good distance from the subway. Now they close at 6pm, which makes it impossible to ever get there except on weekends and even then good luck finding parking or a trolley. What really pissed me off is that we were never notified of any changes. Changing hours of operation especially for a storage unit is important. read more

So I only needed to rent a unit for about 3 weeks, was moving a 1br apt. I reserved a small room I thought would fit everything and when I was showed it I was shocked at how small that space is. That unit would not work so I started talking to Alexis and Lee. I told them that I only needed the space for 3 weeks and they immediately hooked with up with the $1 for the first month promo going on. I got a 15x30 room which was bigger than my entire apt. The worst location ever! I was there since 09 and when I questioned about a smaller unit I was told they can help. My unit at $165 would be $74 or a small one for $65. After trying to figure out how to change units or save money for my "10 boxes" I was told a manager needed to approve, I said I can just move out today since it was only 10 boxes. I was assured that things would work out. After back and forth calls. I decided to move my stuff as I was getting a clear answer or real help. Worse place every and totally over priced. So moving from Astoria to the Bronx was among an assortment of miserable experiences in 2014. I only had one person helping me, and he had his own moving to deal with. So when the movers, who I'll yelp separately, did an excellent job compounded with frontman Devon making the storage a smooth experience. I was elated. Who wants to pay for storage. So I like many I am planning to get in there and get rid of stuff soon. Haven't started that process yet in the last four months. And the other day, I had to get my suit. Realized I didn't have any materials to open or repackage my stuff, so I'll figure something else out. But while I was in there I realized that my stuff had less dust on it in four months, than the stuff at home gets on it after a week. I must discover their secret. read more

This place is full of crooks. 1. I reserved a unit online that is "8x10" for 6/29 2. I received a phone call asking me to come in before that date to look at my unit and fill out the paperwork 3. I went into the office on 6/26 and my specific unit was NOT available. They showed me a "similar" unit. It seemed okay so I signed the paperwork and paid for the unit. I listed my sister in law as an authorized user. 4. my wife and sister in law go with our moving company on 6/29 to move our furniture into storage 5. They are given a 6x8 unit, much too small for our furniture 6. the staff instruct my wife to rent a different unit that is significantly larger but still listed at 8x10. However, the new unit costs $217 a month with a promo of the first month being $110, plus an admin fee of $24 and $11 for insurance. my original reservation was $158 per month with a promo of the first month being $1 + $24 admin fee and $11 for insurance 7. The staff assure my wife that my original lease will be cancelled with a full refund and instruct her to call customer service later to sort that out. 8. I call customer service and they tell me they're not sure why the store told us to call them as cancellations and refunds are handled at the store. However, they will e-mail the district manager and the district manager will issue the full refund. 9. I get a call from the store on 6/30 that my refund of $8.80 will be issued. Obviously, I complain because I paid $36 for the original reservation, and our second reservation for a unit that is listed as the same size cost us $145. 10. They won't issue me a refund, the district manager won't help me either. They are telling me that it's my fault because I saw the unit. But the unit I was shown wasn't even the unit that I got! and they are saying it was really cheap, what does it matter what I paid when it's their promo! It's almost like they are accusing me of making a big deal out of a small monetary loss. So - they basically did a bait and switch on me on the first unit, then charged me 4x more for the 2nd unit, got my business anyway, and still won't refund me for what I paid for the 1st unit. Absolutely horrible experience, horrible staff, horrible management. read more

Overpriced and poorly constructed. It is dangerous to load and unload off of this loading dock. The narrow driveway and lack of parking spaces makes it very easy for you to get stuck in here for hours. This used to be a nice place before the construction several years ago. They called me the day after I made the reservation online to confirm they would be waiting for me, and even offered to do whatever they could if we were running late driving up from DC. Ok, I gave it a 5 star for the customer service and unit size. It doesn't mean the place is perfect. The good: Supervisor is easy to contact for move-in/move-out. If you are there during office hours (up to about 30 min before closing) it's easy to get help from the desk. There are always carts available, just leave your ID. There are bathrooms and they are usually very clean. My unit was a 4'x10', but I swear it must have been larger. I had 16 boxes in it, some small, most medium-large, plus 2 large sterilite containers... And there was still room to walk around since I put all of my boxes on the perimeter in the off chance I wanted to move more things into the unit (and so it was easy to find what I needed). Jeffrey and Darnicia were both very helpful and patient. Trust me, the staff is friendly, it just is slow and quiet there sometimes so they don't seem talkative. The bad: I got my unit on a discount. It was only $46/mo (but with insurance I paid $57/mo). Very cheap so was worth it. However, my unit in particular was in the one row that doesn't have a working light. It wasn't terrible but might be hard to see inside if you actually need to look through your things. My solution: I brought the boxes out and looked through them on the ground floor when I was moving out. No big deal. So definitely worth the money, and the location is very easy to get to via public transportation or driving (I used public transit and had a company pick up my boxes for me!).
