Jenny was rude, not solutions-oriented and unpleasant to deal with. Picture this: a customer shows up as instructed to by Extra Space for a move-out, with a cross-country moving company and is told that the Extra Space "policies" somehow forbid that *longtime paying customer* to move out of their own storage unit. What you would expect from customer service: 1) Customer is told they are forbid from moving out due to certain policies despite being there with ID and movers 2) Customer is apologized to for the inconvenience 3) Employee works to find them a solution immediately to get the move on the road How customer service is here: 1) Customer shows up to move out but told they can't move out due to policy 2) Jenny (employee) acts annoyed, is disrespectful and mean, and tells customer there's no solution but to do the move another day 3) Customer tells her to call her GM 4) When told to call her GM she says "but they might not even pick up", like its a hassle to even call (girl! you have movers and a customer expecting to move out right in front of you - what!!!) 5) All parties involved wait for an hour when they are finally allowed to do the move Jenny: If you don't know the solution for a problem, then you need to call your GM immediately and find one, given legitimized circumstances - you have your customer at a physical location showing ID, you have the movers and an authorized user at the unit showing ID and the customer has ordered the move. It's clear there is no sketchy situation going on and customer wants the move. This poor customer service would be understandable in the case Jenny was protecting the unit from theft, but when ID's were given that wasn't a possible circumstance, and the poor customer service became inexcusable. For every problem, there is a solution - and that is a foundation to customer service. We had called Extra Space (exact location) 4-5 times to confirm this would go seamlessly. The customer service was great, everyone we spoke to was kind. We were told what we needed to do for our move to work out and we executed. Unfortunately despite receiving clarity and triple checking, day-of we were met by Jenny who kept telling us we couldn't do the move and there was no solution. Finally, after an hour we were able to do the move - but when we asked which floor our unit was on, we were told they couldn't tell us - even after ID's were shown, we knew our unit # etc. So, 1) Amazing customer service outside of Jenny, we spoke to multiple people there. 2) Amazing GM, thank you so so much for helping us out. But 3) Please place an emphasis on customer service training because this was not it and inconvenienced MANY MANY people, while putting a move on the line. Customer service does not mean being combative with the customer, unprovoked, when *YOU* have inconvenienced them. Customer service means working on finding a solution because you inconvenienced your customer and taking accountability. Customer service does not mean gaslighting your customer saying "no one could have told you those moveout instructions" when we were careful to take notes of our phone calls to ensure a seamless move. And before you say "we don't have you as ever being a customer" - This move was for my boyfriend. And before you say "he only called us twice" - I called you more than that. Leaving this review at 2 stars, .5 star for Jenny for finally calling her GM after *asked to* and a 1.5 star boost for the GM who carried the whole Extra Space team. I won't go as far as to say not to use this facility, because I know the other workers were polite to us, and the GM found us a solution and cares about this facility - but I would be hesitant to use this facility if you expect all around kindness, true customer service, and ease with move-out. Then again, Jenny could learn from this situation and maybe we prevented you the hassle we were met with by going through this. For storage-only purposes, we recommend Extra Space - our things and unit was super safe. Extremely dissatisfied with Extra Space Storage (Long Island City, NY location). They use extremely shady advertising tactics to get prospects to sign up at an affordable, competitively priced monthly rate, then they will jack up your rate 2-3 months later! I fell for a $65 promotional price for my storage unit, when I signed up in December 2023. By March of 2024, I realized I was getting charged $100 a month. Extra Space Storage was charging me almost double for what I signed up for! When I called to tell them I was being billed the wrong amount, Extra Space Storage informed me that the agreement states that they have the right to raise your storage unit rates at any time. No promotional pricing is actually what you will pay for, other than in month 1. When they tell you to re-negotiate the price of your storage unit price (this was advised an email inquiry asking to understand why I was being billed $100 a month instead of my $65 agreed to monthly storage rate), I was told that the best price they could offer. It doesn't matter what other storage facilities are charging in the area, or if you move to another storage unit in their facility, they don't care. Don't rent with Extra Space Storage!! You think you're getting a promotional price and this can and will happen to you! It takes a microscope to read through their fine print you'll end up paying a ridiculous amount each month because they have the ability to raise their rates at any time for any reason. It's not worth renting a tiny storage unit at Extra Space Storage, LIC! Or any unit! Shady Company! read more

I am so glad to be gone! My storage unit flooded. Several boxes of books and a few irreplaceable items destroyed. They told me I had to haul my moldy belongings out myself and dispose of them elsewhere. There was more waterlogged stuff than my car could hold! I assumed they would repair the leak - it was clear that the water ran into my unit from another unit. I was dead wrong. A month later, my unit flooded again. I had taken steps to protect things, but two more boxes were destroyed, including things I cannot replace. I was devastated. And they wouldn't stay open long enough for me to clean everything out! On my way out the door, one of their staff told me that one WHOLE SIDE of the building floods EVERY time it rains and there is wind. That's why they didn't fix it after the first time. If you want to keep your stuff dry (and who doesn't), I recommend putting a tarp down on the floor and another tarp down over the top of your stuff, and tie them together to seal everything in. OR, you can find a storage location that properly maintains its building to prevent repeated flooding. read more

Got a letter a month after moving in (and paying the move-in fee) that they were renovating and we needed to move out. Went in person and negotiated moving to a different storage unit, and lugged all of our stuff to a different space. Then, suddenly our rent was raised 35%. When I called to inquire why, I was rudely told that they were allowed to do that because it's in the lease. Really wish I had read the other reviews here saying similar things. My father has had a unit with this company since 2014 and I'm sad to say he fell critically ill and was hospitalized in late August of this year. I took a leave of absence from work to care for him since his prognosis was so dire. While caring for him I realized he may have not been paying his storage bill so I reached out to the company to find out the status of his space. I ended up speaking to the general manager Jen Elisa and she was not empathetic to the situation in the least and offered no help whatsoever except to tell me I had to get power of attorney over him, or that I could pay off the total balance myself. Because he was in default over 40 days or so he had two late fees as well as a pre-foreclosure fee on his account totaling over $600, so I asked if there could be an accommodation made on his behalf given that he was incapacitated to help me pay off the balance minus the late fees and pre-foreclosure fee. Her response was that they were going forward with the auction of my fathers belongings in November should his balance not be paid off in full. She also told me that even speaking to me was just out of courtesy since I wasn't on the lease. She then added that they had done everything they were supposed to on their end by sending my father emails and calling him, even though I told her that he was incapacitated and as such could not receive those emails or calls. This was even after I offered to have the hospital provide a letter confirming my father's severely ill state. In the meantime my father's condition worsened and he ended up in the ICU on a ventilator, so getting power of attorney was not possible. With no other recourse I reached out to customer service and they put me in touch with a manager at their district office who offered to reach out to their legal team and see what could be done. He was very kind and helpful and was able to have the late and pre-foreclosure fees waived so I could gain access to my fathers things. However, he also informed me that Jen Elisa was a district manager and had the same authority as he did! So I was outraged that she did absolutely nothing to assist and had every ability to do exactly what he had done. To add insult to injury, my father passed and while going through his personal effects and papers I found his original contract and my name WAS on it as the alternate contact. They NEVER contacted me though my number and name are clearly listed next to his. So all of the needless emotional distress they caused me and my family for no reason when they should have reached out to me in the first place when they couldn't reach him. And especially since his belongings were going to be auctioned off. Completely inept leadership on the part of Jen Elisa. NEVER do business with this company. read more

Avoid! Avoid!! AVOID!!! Just moved out of my unit. While unpacking at home I discovered significant water damage to a desk, a mattress, and a side table (see pictures). I of course had to throw them all away. Before leaving Extra Space I had noticed some dripping in the hallway and that one of my boxes was slightly damp on the bottom. So I asked someone on staff to look at my things and start an insurance claim if necessary. He went into my old unit (#5226) and said he didn't see any evidence of water. Then he looked at the contents of the belongings I was moving out and said everything appeared fine, according to his professional opinion. So I left and unpacked. When I called the location after I making this discovery they refused to file a claim because I "waited until after moving out to notify them." It had been less than 2 hours after I had left. If your things are worth saving - and especially if they are not replaceable! - DO NOT STORE THEM HERE. I'm starting a Yelp account just to rave about this place. I reserved a unit online ahead of time, and when I got there, Julie, who was working the desk, got me an even better price! She walked around with me to find a unit that I liked, and was really pleasant the entire time. She made sure to tell me all of the deals and discounts I could take advantage of, as well, which I really appreciated. My move was really stressful (aren't they all?), and when it became clear that I reserved a unit that was too small and that I wasn't going to be finished moving my stuff off the loading dock by the time they closed, I panicked, thinking about how much I would need to just take to the curb and replace later. My sister went in to speak with Matt, who was SO AMAZING. He was really kind, helped me secure my belongings overnight, and ensured me that I wasn't the first person this had happened to. When I went back the next day, Matt greeted me again, helped me get a unit directly across from my other one, and even helped me lug a cart up, reducing the time I had to spend there. I am someone who really appreciates customer service, and these guys take the cake. The spaces are also really clean and well maintained, and there are a lot of dollies for use, which meant that on day two, while I was moving alone, it didn't take me all day. It is also really close to the subways and a uhaul place, so I didn't have to waste a bunch of time getting there or getting a moving vehicle. Don't go anywhere else! I have to agree with Jason. I changed storage spaces (I was at American SelfStorage) because this one is closer to my new home. The contract may have it in fine print, but the rent increases are ludicrous. My 5x10 started at $134 and within 5 MONTHS it was raised to $155. I will try to get my 10 dollar discount because I do have renter's insurance, but those rates are a rip off. I just started renting a unit here. I reserved online a few weeks in advance. Public Storage is a little more convenient to me, but I didn't like that you can only reserve units a week in advance. I was stressed about moving and wanted to make sure I had a unit that I was happy with, and I was antsy to get it done. I saw all of the five star reviews here, and I was happy with the rate for the size unit I wanted, so I went ahead and reserved it online. My only issue, and the reason I took a star away, is that after booking the unit, I received a call from the facility, telling me to stop by that night to look at the unit and fill out some paperwork. When I got there, I told the employee at the desk who I was and that I had been told to come by that night, and he was basically like "why? Your rental doesn't start for over two weeks, I can do this now but you'd have to start paying now so you should just wait." It was fine, I was glad to get a little bit of a feel for the place, but I could have done without going out of my way in the cold while I'm in the middle of a move for no reason. Little bit of a waste of time. Other than that, which I think was probably just some sort of communication error or a misreading of my start date or something, I was really happy. My rental just started on Saturday so I can't say much about their billing (although I'm glad they do it online), but the lease signing process was great. I had a tour of the facility with a man who was totally willing to answer all of my questions and who gave me a really detailed description of everything. The employee who helped me with the paperwork was also super friendly and chatty. Totally not what I was expecting. I found the facility to be accessible, straightforward, clean, and most importantly, secure, and I'm really happy that I decided to rent a unit here. All that said, I do wish there were more than 2 elevators. There were long waits and a little bit of backup when I was moving in on Saturday. But that's a really minor thing, and my movers and I made it work. If you start your rental on the first of the month when a lot of leases begin and end, just make sure you factor that in. I just went there today. .Extra Space is about 10 blocks from the apartment I am moving from, and I figured that storage in Queens would be cheaper than storage in Manhattan. I felt that I was treated very well. The fellow, James, whose business card says "Manager", led me all through the facility, to show me the "climate-controlled units (it was pretty hot in there, by me. So, when he couldn't find one the size I wanted there, we went to the regular units, and found one that seemed about right for me. There is an option to downsize or upsize if you have underestimated or overestimated your space needs (that costs $10) You have to get insurance (I went for $10/$2000 ins) and you have to pay a $20 admin fee when you move in. Best part - no deposit. Next best part - it is right by the R train entrance. The place looks very clean. I am moving to a women's residence in Manhattan, and I really have no idea about the actual space I will have (other than that it will be tiny), so having this space to store my things until I know where I am and what I can have with me is very valuable. The hours are kind of skimpy, but I will make do. What I liked was the pleasantness of the service. James was very easy going and friendly. I made some off-the-wall comments ,and he fielded them easily. I also had the chance to see him deal with some women who had not paid for their space in many months and were irate that, although they had been notified of the impending auction of their possessions, and had not responded in any way, felt that their things should not have been sold off. This guy was the personification of cool in the face of some hysterical Hispanic women who were throwing things around and screaming at him in English and Spanish.. The national call center directed me to a local extra space to do my contract with them locally for the unit 3000 miles away. Here's where Emilio comes in. This guy is a rockstar. PROS: Courteous and Professional Staff. Here comes the "fine print" that they don't tell you. 1. Add $10 EXTRA for "mandatory" insurance per month. They say they will "honor" it in the event of an disaster. Good luck with that. 2. NO 24 hours access. Closes at 8PM latest or earlier (weekends) 3. Only 4 loading docks. 4. WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF RENTING, PRICE INCREASED BY $20 per month. Penny Wise Pound Foolish. This seems too big a jump to be reasonable. Know what you're getting yourself into. I'm getting the heck of out here. WHY SO GREEDY? I for one, will never use Extra Storage again. 5. Moving carts aren't always available. You have to go ALL THE WAY to other side. 6. One elevator was "out of order" for an ENTIRE WEEK. This left the whole facility with ONLY ONE WORKING Elevator which required LONG Travel. Extremely inconvenient. 7. On certain floors, you have to push harder due to a 30 degree ramp. If the cart is loaded and heavy, it makes a big difference. Had I known all of the above, I'd have NEVER used this place. The $20 JUMP in monthly rental within 3 months is PURE GREED and a big turn off. RENTERS BE AWARE!!! Whatever fees they quoted you ADD $30 on top of that ($10 for insurance & $20+ retal increase in 3 months) THEN DO YOUR MATH TO SEE IF YOU'RE GETTING YOUR MONEY'S WORTH. read more

With so many storage places in Astoria, this one is nothing special and not worth it. Their "first month free" offer is only available for super small storage spaces, there is no dumpster on site to throw out things you don't want/need any longer, and they charge a hefty fee if you leave anything that needs to be removed. Their customer service is weak at best, and there are only 4 parking spaces at the loading dock. With so many options in the same area, I would definitely recommend looking into a different place. read more
