This rating is based on my initial visit on 7/5/22 to view the 10x10 unit I recently rented for an upcoming move. Chelsea gave me the keys and patiently and kindly gave me a tour of the unit and how to access it for the movers. The light in the unit would not turn off so I arranged with her to have it fixed by the time we move. We also purchased a moisture absorber to help when the air is humid. Don't get scammed out of your money, time, or sanity. Don't sign. Don't store your items here. Reasons? 1) Predatory "introductory rates" revealed through auto-bill pay My rates have continually increased month-after-month without any notice or indication as to why. They got me with auto-billpay and increased a little here and there each month. The entire billing experience has been disingenuous from the start and my rates have more than doubled in less than 6months. 2) Hours of operation (recent changes) This facility used to be open until 8 or 9pm. Mid February they reduced the hours to 9am-6pm daily. Good luck accessing your unit if you have a day job. Also, instead of a rent reduction for reduced hours, they're increasing rates instead. A big middle-finger to their customers on multiple fronts. 3) Break-ins and Insurance The insurance situation is another scam in and of its own. On one hand, you're required to pay if the unit is of a certain size. On the other, the coverage amount is very little. If you don't catalogue your belongings with receipts \ date of purchase, the loss won't be covered. They'll additionally "depreciate" the value of your belongings to further short whatever's owed. Consider yourself warned and if you must store your items, make sure you get double coverage with renters insurance or a separate third-party. Opinion: These abhorrent changes, especially during the pandemic, are a seemingly last ditch effort to arbitrarily boost their numbers to appease investors during the pandemic. It's evident that Public Storage has become a shady predatory establishment that cares little about their customers or their experience. You're better off doing business without them. read more

Sorry for the length of this review but felt it important for those of you who are considering leasing out space from Public Storage. Public Storage uses predatory business practices to nickle and dime their tenants. As if moving isn't a stressful enough, they lure you in with the promise of first month free. What a joke! Nothing is free. You don't "have to" buy the insurance. When leasing smaller units you are forced to buy their $25 lock. I went to public storage looking to rent a 5x10 unit. "Well, only a few dollars more you can get a 5x14 and who couldn't use more space." I was fine with that until I get an email alert saying the price of that unit was being raised from $129 to $160! A $30 jump just like that. Oh, hell no....I didn't need all that space to begin with. Don't buy into the sales pitch. After a few months and realizing that was a poor decision. I decided to reserved a 5x10 unit in the middle of March at a "special" reserve rate, which I'm pissed that I didn't screen shot cause I think that priced was jacked up when it came time to sign the new paperwork? FYI - If downsizing or upgrading a unit your told you won't be charged another admin fee. But when the time comes to sign the new contract either you pay the admin fee again or they will revert the "special" advertised back to the original price, nice right? Anyways, to be avoid "additional fees" I read thru the contract to be sure I was giving proper notice and what not. Kyle from PB called me confirming the reservation and was "adamant" about me going in to do the new paperwork. Adamant means he called me "everyday" asking when I was coming in. Wanting to get it out of the way and thinking I would be nice since it seemed Kyle was hard up. We agreed on meeting March 27th. With a written notice in hand (and as required) I notified them I will be vacating at the end of the month. Looking to square everything up, I paid for the month of April on the "reserved" smaller unit. Boom, done hereeee..... NOPE, THAT WASN'T THE END OF Kyle. I just got a "courtesy" call from none other than infamous Kyle informing me of an outstanding balance of $18.33. Dumbfounded I asked him to please explain. I moved from larger unit into the smaller one on the 30th, both months paid for. What is the additional charge for? His response, "Remember when we were walking to the unit and I asked you if you wanted your billing to be from the 27th to the 27th and you said, that's fine." Which I do not remember saying and makes absolutely no sense to me since the larger unit was paid and the reserved smaller one has now been paid. I said, "Your going to charge me additional fees on semantics. Here I am trying to follow all protocols in trying to avoid this bs and you tell me this!?! His response, "Well, I just don't want you to get hit with a late fee on top of this one. Lesson learned: When your down; watch out for opportunist such as Pubic Storage who will only try and kick down further if your tracking and on point. Be well and stay safe. read more

I give PS four stars for one reason, and one reason only. Kyle. Kyle came on board as the manager, about a month or so after I became a customer in April 2017. Without going into detail, the previous manager had a very aggressive interactive style. I felt helicoptered under this person's management style. I will make this positive declaration: I appreciate that the precious manager had a small, drive up space available in a very desirable location on the premises. When Kyle came, he was like a drink of wonderfully cold, refreshing, and calming water on a sweltering, hot summer day. Kyle is the only reason, I enjoyed my stay at PS. I could take my time to organize and deal with my belongings. No helicoptering. Kyle has a gentle spirit. He is also very diligent about doing his tasks and ensuring that things are safe and in order. I had promised to give a good review, but failed to do so until now. Today, I went in to see Kyle, and apologize for not writing the review, but discovered that he is on vacation. The lady who is filling in for Kyle is also very gracious. The minute I walked in, she spoke with kindness and professionalism. Her name is Michele. So, now there are TWO reasons to rent from PS: Kyle AND Michelle! I decided to put off my review no longer! Kyle, the property manager at this public storage takes care of his clients and his property. He is available for any questions you may have or repairs that are needed. If he does not have an answer he will make sure you are contacted by the person that can answer your question. He does not blow you off when you have a question, concern and especially a repair that needs to be taken care of. He is personable and very friendly. I have never walked in the office without seeing him smile and greet me. I have heard him talking with other customers that were not very happy and he was patient with them and explained what was going on with their storage and why. I never see Kyle just sitting around. He is either in the office working, walking the grounds, cleaning up, or talking with clients asking how things are going. I have to say that I am immensely disappointed with this facility. We rented a space to store my son's apartment furniture after his graduation from college. Due to Covid, his stay back at his family home has been extended longer than intended. We rented a second-floor 5x10 space in May 2020. They raised the rent the first time in September 2020 by almost 10%. They are now raising the rent by another 16% less than a year later. We will be paying 26% more than the promised rate slightly more than a year after we began renting the space. We will be investigating alternative storage options as soon as possible. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! I'd rather give 0 stars. They had a break-in Thursday night or Friday morning, 1/10-1/11/2019. At least 30 units were hit. The manager, Kyle, assured us that there would be increased security, police on patrol, and they would review surveillance footage. There was ANOTHER BREAK-IN LAST NIGHT!! When a customer asked Kyle, "What about the increased security," he acted dumbfounded and just shrugged it off. Clearly these people don't care about protecting their property, customers' belongings, or about their own reputation. We will be removing our belongings today and filing a claim for the missing items. Unfortunately they only cover $3000. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. My experience with them was awful. When trying to move out I was charged a full month for leaving on the first before 5pm. Being that it was a short month and it was not mentioned upon signing that you would be charged for a full month you would think since the unit was completely vacated that they would be able to prorate for the day or charge some type of fee. BUT no you have to pay the entire months rent for ONE DAY. I tried to call customer service to work something out and they were also extremely unhelpful and said it was up to me to contact the location and try to negotiate. Initially, I thought this was going to be a good choice for storage. They were offering online special for first month or so, but as I already had a unit in SJ, I couldn't use it. That wasn't mentioned anywhere, but ok, I had to pay full price. Wasn't thrilled, but ok. It was the right size and convenient. Then the woman there was incredibly rude, I almost felt sorry for her. Latest thing - they increased rent for unit by $50 in June or July. They apparently had my address incorrectly in their system, and I never rec'd any advance notice. Other rental places I've used have a modest increase annually, perhaps by $10-15. But who increases the rent on a storage unit by $50 all at once? Bottom line, I will be closing my unit, and taking my stuff and business elsewhere. read more

Other than having a space to store my families belongings - I would NEVER recommend this company as a whole! We rented a 10x30 size unit in the beginning of Feb. last year 2021 and through the last year - literally Feb. to Feb. of 2022 they raised our rent from $375 to now almost $600!!! That is three times in one year! On top of that we have scheduled a move out as we thankfully are moving into a new home. We go to the unit start loading after work as my husband and I both work full time - leave about 7 pm with our last load for the night, only to get an email telling us that we left too late and need to make arrangements to be in and out during gate hours. Which they close at 6 pm during the week and 5 pm on weekends, telling us that should give plenty of time to access our belongings. Ummmm it is Spring and light outside until almost 8 pm - we work full time so NO that doesn't give even the slightest bit of accessibility. I have contacted plenty of times to discuss the rent increases, never get call backs. Just happy to be DONE with this place and please if you rent from them - MAKE SURE you plan on doubling your rent payment within the year. read more

Full disclosure, they gave me a card asking for feedback last time I stopped by. No problem, this is a very good storage place, and is managed the best now than it ever has been. I've used it on and off for many years off and on, and have also tried others in this area. It seems like the current resident manager is super conscientious in the maintenance of a clean well lighted and safe site. She and everyone working there are helpful, friendly and efficient. It's a convenient location, with easy access to Hwy 580, and probably anywhere in the Castro Valley, Hayward area. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is that there seems to be a policy of raising the rate every year, more or less, so be aware that can happen. Suspect that there are strict policies if you don't pay on time, too. read more

The worker, Emmanuel, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the storage units' dimensions and prices. He even helped move the boxes to our car! They also give discounts when you buy a certain amount of boxes (10% off any sized 10, 20% off 20...). I would come here again because the location is convenient and quick. read more

Public Storage has had made us pay for the full month , with nothing in return. I realize that they are in the business to make money but since we are still keeping the second unit, I would have thought that Public Storage would have given us some type of credit. They get one star for the customer service on the phone and via email. However I had an appointment with Kyle on a Saturday to look at an unit. I also had called another storage place that is up the road. So I show up to meet Kyle. There is no one there in the office and no one around. Complete ghost town. I go to call the call button and there are 3 black widow spiders near the call button. I had to blow on one to be able to use the call button. No answer. I tried calling the office several times to no avail. The place looked filthy. I knew within 5 minutes there was no way I would rent here. I finally did connect with Kyle later that day. He thought the appointment was Sunday -the following day. Which is bizarre because I made the appointment and got BOTH an email AND a phone call reminder for the appointment. Apparently Kyle needed all the reminders more than I did. Needless to say, the storage place up the street got my business. They were clean, professional, quick and had outstanding customer service. I definitely made the right choice. After signing up with them I went to get some packing supplies at the Public Storage supply close by. Of course, there was no one there. What is it with people not being in the office during business hours with this company!?!? It was 11:30am on a Saturday and no one is there. I get on my phone and mid conversation a girl comes slowly walking to the door and looks highly irritated. She looks at me and then points at the store - apparently asking if I want in. I point at my phone as apparently she didn't see the phone attached to my ear and was irritated I irritated her while on a break. Needless to say, I left. I will not be giving public storage any business - not to even buy a box. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. read more

The storage unit we have seems to be safe and dry. The huge problem is the increases in rent so often and so high! The increases are criminal. Why can't I raise my tenant's rent past 4% a year and PS can raise my rent 30%??!! The company is a rip-off and is simply trying to get rich of of its customers. We can only hope that there are more choices over time and other storage companies will be somewhat better in caring about their customers. Avoid PS if you are able to. read more

I have had a unit at this place since August 2012. This used to be an excellent facility but something has changed. My rating now is poor. I have stopped by the last two weeks but was unable to move much because no dolleys were available anywhere. On top of that, the elevator wasn't working (my unit is on the second floor). When I complained at the office, I was given a lecture on how to use the elevator. No attempt to check it out. Finally, my rent has increased twice in less than a year.
