There is a raw, beautiful kind of poetry to the Inner Richmond. Just off the chaotic,…read moredim-sum-scented artery of Clement Street, tucked away behind a weathered gate, sits a leafy fortress of sanity. This place doesn't do the manicured, artificial perfection of a suburban big-box nursery. It's a love letter to the stubborn, magnificent flora that actually belongs here--native San Francisco evergreens, defiant flowering shrubs, and young trees reaching up through the fog. But what absolutely stops me in my tracks are the young succulents. Tiny, resilient little bastards, hoarding water and surviving beautifully on fog and salty air. Step inside the main building and the vibe shifts. It's filled with rows of heavy, oven-baked artisan pottery, glowing with earthy, utilitarian beauty. I bought a few of these heavy clay pots over twenty years ago; they've outlasted relationships, bad habits, and multiple apartments. They are still sitting in my home, unchanged, anchoring me to the past. But let's be real: this isn't a neighborhood social club. The staff here are perfectly pleasant and polite enough to listen if you start rambling, but look into their eyes and you'll see the beautiful truth--they do not give a shit about your backyard garden. Understandably so. They're here to work, not to validate your green thumb. You also need to come correct, because these plants do not come cheap. The prices are steep enough to make your wallet ache. If you don't actually know how to keep a plant alive, you might as well skip the middleman and flush your hard-earned cash straight down the sewer drain. And yet, it is worth every penny. This is my ultimate decompression chamber. A twenty-minute stroll through these expensive, silent aisles isn't just a walk--it's a tactical retreat from the grinding, everyday hustle of the city. It's a brief escape, sure. But it's enough to let the noise fade out. A true Inner Richmond treasure.

The extent of my gardening experience so far is a dormant (read: likely dead) amaryllis, a…read moredefinitely dead orchid (turns out they do need water after all), and some sweet potatoes in my pantry that sprouted green stems and leaves while I was off on vacation. So what possessed me to buy 20 ranunculus bulbs from Costco? I don't know, probably the same demon that possesses me whenever I buy Nutella in giant bulk jars, but we're not here to talk about that. Anyway, when I decided that it was time to plant the poor things, a quick Yelp search pointed me towards SF Garden Supply because they were close by and had parking. Since I know zilch about gardening but a lot about accidentally growing potatoes on your kitchen counter, I can't tell you much about how robust their inventory is, but I can tell you about their stellar customer service. I was cheerfully greeted upon entering, and after I wandered around the small space for about a minute, I was stopped with a polite, "Can I help you find something?" "Yes, I need... dirt and pots for some flower bulbs." One minute later I had a couple of (utilitarian but perfectly functional) plastic pots in hand and my savior had a giant bag of soil slung over his shoulder. Buff and efficient, which is the best kind of customer service, really. The icing on the cake is that he didn't charge me for the supplies. Now that's the sort of small business love I'm not gonna find at big chain stores. I would've given the place five stars anyway for their service and utility but that kindness really made my day.
