I'm pretty torn on this joint. I see all these rave reviews and everyone saying they have one of the best, if not the best, burger in town. Then the dill fries. I'll just go ahead and say it: If you think this is the best burger in town, you've never manned a grill in your life. Yes, it was good, but a bit small. I'll give them credit for giving us a homemade burger, but it tastes exactly like every chuck burger from a home, but lacks a little seasoning. The fries were good, but didn't have much flavor. Basic homemade fries, but the dill only comes through if you literally eat the dill that is thrown on top of it. I go to restaurants to get food I can't replicate at home and I can easily do this at home, if not better. So why the rating? Because it's not your status quo place and does give you a home "meal". It's a mixed bag. Good selection on tap and of whiskey, but it's an expensive place to drink. The at atmosphere, meh. I think it's just convenient to a certain populace and it wasn't filled with college students, which is a huge plus. I may go back sparingly to try other dishes, but that'll be an impulse visit. They told us it would be 45 minutes and it felt like it took forever. It was definitely over an hour. We had beer on draft and it was great. There is a bar environment with people hanging and drinking. We ordered the small plates and they were delicious. One was pork confit with melon, honeydew, and cantaloupe. The other was a burrata cheese, which was tasty. The river scallops were great. Two of us had burgers. One was cooked to perfection. The other was ok. The dill French fries were delicious, really crispy with a mayo dip made in house. They were out of 2/3 of their desserts. Real bummer. All in all we enjoyed the meal but the wait was just too long. Let me start by saying this was my first visit. I arrived around 8:30PM. The place was busy, but not at capacity, yet my group had to wait 45 minutes for apps, which were not hot when they arrived. French fries should be served HOT! The fries have dill in them, which was tasty and added an herby twist to an all time favorite. I don't eat wings, but I will say they looked plump. Others in my group says they were spicy (but I'm a hot sauce freak, so I doubt the spice level for a true spicy fan). The pickled veggies they served on the tray were crisp & tart... just like they should be, IMO. The best app was fried beets!!! Hot and crispy with a horse radish dip. Now don't freak out, beet-haters! They aren't those purple canned things you find on a salad bar. These were a variation of white beets, consistency was sort of like an al denote Potato. I love beets, but the true testament were the 3 others at the table who do NOT eat beets, but liked them! So go out of your comfort zone and try the fried beets. They serve beer & wine, and quite a large selection at that. I had a chocolate stout. The various cidres, ales, stouts, etc. were all thoughtfully served in different glasses. I appreciate how COLD the beer was... refreshing. I wish I had taken photos, but there were beer & wine in display coolers (for sale?). Then there was a bar, inside tables, and an amazing outdoor space. Not covered, so go in clear weather. All in all a great hangout place, even if the kitchen does get slow, the beer and wine selection and seating makes up for that. Definitely will give it another try sometime. read more

The atmosphere is really great! My only thing is that I bought a small plate of the ravioli and they weren't kidding about a "small" plate; there were only 3 raviolis on my plate in which I paid $9 for and that is not including the tip. The 3 raviolis were good, but I was definitely still hungry when I left and didn't feel like I got my money's worth. If you just want a snack I do not recommend getting a small plate because it can be pricey. I heard the burgers were great though so I will try that next time! read more

I tried Public and General for the first time several weeks ago for burger night. The food service was a little slow, but the food was great! Wonderful beer and cocktail selection. The one thing I LOVE about Public and General is how cute the place is, atmosphere, and the nice staff. The service is a bit slow, but I couldn't tell if it was because of the kitchen or waiters. This place has a small market that sells cuts of meat, cheeses, and wine next door and are reasonably priced. The food is good; I would recommend the dill fries. Had the cheese platter which is great for groups of three-four to share. Lots of different tapa like food options. And of course, wine and beer. This place is a great girls night. read more

Ambiance is somewhat unique; combination of a store, casual dining area, and patio. The only problem was the service. Waited more than an hour for sandwich and dill fries. It was busy but definitely not crazy busy. It was almost like self service as nobody really checked on us if we needed anything while waiting for our food. I continue to be impressed by Public and General. This time I had small plates including the Pâté which I'm still dreaming about. It came with small bowls of a divine salt, honey and mustard and a long baguette. I started solely with the pâté and added each ingredient one by one until I added them all and ate the entire baguette. Public & General - Bars Near Me - Gainesville, Florida

I got off of I-75 and went out of my way (thirty minutes in each direction on a trafficked and rainy Saturday) on a recent business trip, to try the food that I had heard fine things about at Public & General. So, to be fair, my expectations were high. But, why shouldn't they be? In any case, the space is successfully made to look like a 19th Century Mercantile with lots of wood and low lighting, shelves of jarred goods (and a few refrigerated cases). Well that's fun. And so very hip right now. I was told that my take-out order would be five minutes. It was twenty. Now, they got busy right after I placed my order but it became apparent that my food was ready and had gotten mixed in with another take-out order and the bartender, who was getting a little frantic as he kept seeing my face but not my order, finally realized what had happened and went digging into the other bag to find my food. Very annoying. I ordered the following: "BBQ MUSHROOM SANDWICH with salted cabbage (kimchi add $1)" for $7.00 and "FRIED TURNIPS with honey herb vinegar" for $6.00. Both were delicious. Simple but hearty and well-prepared. However, the vinegar was neither honeyed nor herbed but was, rather, just malt vinegar. Too strong for the delicate and slightly sweet turnips, which turned out to be tasty with bites of the sauce rich (and very sloppy --- having been sitting smushed in a bag with someone else's food for maybe ten minutes) sandwich. The sauce deserves praise, as much a gravy in texture and colour as it was BBQ in flavour. Details like a sesame seeded bun on the sandwich were nice but the salted cabbage was paltry. This might not have been worth my almost hour-and-half long foray off of the interstate. I truly do wish that the fine food coming out of the hipster kitchens of American could be accompanied by some manner of organization of service. read more

Fun concept!!! Order food at the counter, drinks at the bar. I felt like I was at a friends house hanging out for the evening. Everyone was super friendly and made you feel at home. 2 months open, these guys are good! I don't like the sports bar atmosphere, but the I can't fault them for who they are. P&G has good workers and the food is excellent. My significant other and I sat down at the only table left (just 2 of us, but it was a big table). It was pretty funny when a lady with a group of 8 told us to move, assuming that we would just give up our table. I told them to join us which despite her reluctance was her only option. Imagine telling someone to get out of their own table. It was pretty funny! Anyway, mustard greens w/ bacon were good, beet salad was acceptable. Chicken wings were not hot enough but flavored VERY well. Fries were delicious and celery root soup was pretty good, though I'd nix the tarragon grass on top. Fun place in Gainesville. Low key , friendly vibe with a few tables in front near the market part, and a bar and tables in back. Also a very nice patio when it's cooler weather. I got a pork shoulder sandwich and my daughter got a hamburger. Both were delicious. Also got the regular fries, homemade and very good. You order at the bar, and they bring your food to you. I went for the burger special on Tuesday which was definitely worth the hype. The burger was delicious! However the dill fries were nothing special. The dill was too coarsely chopped, so you are literally just getting regular fries with giant chunks of dill that don't actually season the fries. The mayo with it was good, though. I still think this restaurant needs to be more clear about how orders are taken, and the people at the bar need to be more attentive. Maybe I just came on bad days. read more

Everything is so clean and cute I was suprised when the owner was my bartender and his cutie babies were there too. I really love the salad options and the mushroom burgers. Shame they arent included in the tuesday deal which seems like they would cater to vegans seeing as they are very hipstery.
