I stopped in here on a Friday night and I can see how this place can get busy! Though it's small, they have an impressive array of beers on tap and in bottles behind the bar. The Bull is unique because it's not just a downtown bar but an art gallery and live music space. I appreciate that they are LGBTQ+ friendly and make it known loud and proud. I love this place and I truly hope it survives COVID-19. The staff are incredibly nice. We were on the waitlist for Crane Ramen next door. Our beeper went off right when we got another beer and the bartender went right over and bumped us down the reservation list so we could finish our beers. We really enjoyed talking with him and as well as the other customers seated at the bar. They have a great beer collection, interesting snacks, and really interesting decor. After we had dinner we came back and listened to a really great jazz trio play. I am really looking forward to visiting again in the future. read more

The Bull is homey and adorable, and completely lacking pretension. Above all, the atmosphere reels me in. At night, it is a beer and wine bar. But, during the daytime, it is a place to sip coffee or tea and daydream. The baristas are patient and friendly, and will help you with your order and make suggestions. Their bagel sandwiches are quite popular, and the menu has some elaborate bagel offerings. We will definitely be stopping back by soon for brunch. read more

Beer and wine while you wait on line for Crane Ramen. Crane Ramen just opened and it is probably going to be very popular. Our wait was about 1 hour and we were able to give them our phone number to call us while we waited so we just entered this bar in the meantime. We most likely would have never come this way if it wasn't for Crane so I see this place getting even more business. They had a good selection of beers and wines and the bartender was very friendly. Although I know it's strictly a bar, I kinda wish they had finger foods like popcorn or nuts while we waited at the bar. Update: The first time we went to this place, the bar smelled pretty bad although it looked classy. It was a lot better smelling and tidier the second time around. I also saw the sell snacks now which is pretty great. We only had 1.5 drinks each and left but I could definitely find us staying longer if they had maybe some cheese plates or something too. read more

I always loved the Bull for its friendly, laid back atmosphere, and the good music.. They have just changed management, and I since that happened I am seeing further improvements week after week.. We've been to the Bull a few times and always enjoyed the mellow vibe. But this last weekend, we had an experience we'd never get anywhere else. We got married on Saturday and we were looking for a place to hang out and end the night with a few siblings and friends. We walked in the rain over to the Bull but it turns out they had closed for the night for a private party for the owner's family. We stepped onto the patio to regroup and figure out what to do next and Jacob, the owner, came out. He asked if we just got married and we said yes. Then he offered a bottle of champagne and a few beers on the house and even brought out a little table with electric candles. Then a few minutes later, the whole family came out and sang an Irish blessing with us. It was magical, the kind of generosity that can't be asked for, only given. We've found our new hang out. Looking forward to when things open up so we can come and bring friends. read more

The atmosphere is what really makes this place as great as it is. The lights are dimmed and it's very calm and chill. I really like the fact that it's not full of young college kids. It's a place to relax, have a few drinks from various vendors, listen to music, and enjoy the company. I especially like the fact that you never have to fight to get the bartenders attention and that they give you samples of the various drinks that you can try before you buy! Not quite sure how I'm the first person to write a review on The Bull but this place rocks. Period. Located in the heart of downtown, The Bull is a brand new cafe/bar that serves organic coffee and bagels in the AM and a decent selection of beers and wine in the PM. I've been both during the afternoon and at night. This is a good place to study in the day-- the tables are quite big so you can sprawl out and the coffee is delicious. The bartenders have always been pleasant and make suggestions if you ask. On certain nights, DJs spin and it's a pretty chill place to grab a drink or stay for a few. It's a must visit! read more

A grown up bar! I've been to the Bull a couple times and it's my new go-to place to meet friends for drinks. You can grab a drink, catch up and not be overwhelmed by the sound system or drunk undergrads clamoring for the bar. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and they have a nice selection of wines. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun. If you want a quiet drink, go on a weekday or earlier on the weekend. For groups, go later on a Saturday. One of my favorite bars in Gainesville. Slightly higher priced and mellow enough to keep out most college students, or at least the younger ones, but an awesome place to grab a few drinks and hang out with friends. When you start to get old like me, the loud music and shouting to talk to your friends during a night out gets d quick. This place is everything I could want in a bar in downtown. It's relaxed, on the quieter side, and even has a selection of board games you can take to your table to play. They also have a small floor area for live music. It feels a lot like being in a bar/home. The vibe cannot be beat if you're wanting to avoid the loud, dark bars full of rowdy college coeds. read more

This place gets 5 stars for me. The first time I came here, it was a cold winter night, and the bartender was serving house made Sangria from a crockpot. I forget the bartender's name, but he turned out to also be the owner of the establishment. He was a lovely fellow, easy-going, willing to talk but able to politely break away from conversation to attend to other customers (that is a gift!). The atmosphere is cozy, plenty of seats at the bar plus some booths to sit at. Occasional live music. When speaking to the owner, he said his intent was to create a space for people to meet. The literal definition of a pub house...being, a public house. A place for neighbors to meet neighbors and to have a good, safe time. I would venture to say that, Mr. Owner, you have achieved your goal. read more

I love the energy of this place. It feels like a neighborhood tavern in Williamsberg without the snow BUT it's more than that. Positive vibes and great beer. I had the best pear beer I've ever had there. No TV. No distraction from meeting your neighbors. Good conversation. I don't know if I want to describe The Bull as pretentious or charming. It's not really my thing. The prices are too high and the crowd is dull. Great selection of food, drinks, and coffee products though. If you're a snobby arts grad student, a young-achieving assistant professor, or part of the local literati - you'll love this place. Honestly, I just had the worst experience I have ever had in a bar, and I am 30 years old: Upon sitting down at the bar to hear some jazz, my boyfriend and I waited at least five minutes for a bartender to appear. Finally, I asked the girl next to me, " so, is there a bartender?" She says, " yeah. It's Rich. I'll go get him for you." A minute later, in walks Rich, and not only did he talk to us like we were scum of some kind, but he rolled his eyes when I asked to see a wine list. Needless to say, we got up and left. I guess that's what we get for interrupting his cigarette. The Bull was going to be my new favorite place. But I will never go back. They must not want my money if their bartender is allowed to be that big of a prick. read more

The Bull is a nice little bar that I discovered last night. There is nothing extraordinary about this bar, but I did have a good time. They only serve beer and wine, so don't come here looking for a cocktail. With that said, there was a jazz quartet playing, which really set the mood. Tons of loyal patrons who were known by name stopped in, and the bar was packed by 11. It's a fun place! If you sit at the bar, be prepared to look at dozens of collected butterflies in the glass...I didn't find that appetizing, but hey, you might. read more

I guess I don't really get it. I came in here with a couple of friends for a different happy hour location. As I recall they didn't really have much of a happy hour...in fact there were people in here studying. The atmosphere was cute, reminded me of some places in Savannah. Got a chicken salad on a bagel. The bagel was VERY good but that had to be some of the blandest chicken salad I've ever had. Beer selection for the area isn't great (almost everywhere there's beer in town they carry swamphead, ok Gainesville?...it's kind of a given now). Guess I need to try one of their exotic bagel specials, but as a bar I just don't get what all the hype is about. read more

The standout features of this place are its coffee, service, and ambiance. If your just looking for a decent cup of drip coffee, the bull is a much more affordable option than Volta, but by no means am I saying its better. Seating here is much more limited, as there are only two tables, the bar, and a small nook at the front window. Regardless, you shouldn't have trouble finding seating during the day, which is obviously the ideal time to enjoy the coffee and do whatever you do at a coffee shop. As far as the service goes, I've never had a complaint. You'll notice that most of the girls working there are very attractive- but devoid of condescension or pretentiousness. In fact, they're all very amiable and attentive. The blatant presence of wood (bench, tables, counter, floor) combined with the sparse lighting and tall, white walls make for a "chill" environment. Though the weekend crowd can get overwhelming in that small space and the live music can be a hurdle during conversation, those are but typical/expected features of a late-night venue serving alcohol. It should be mentioned though that they don't serve liquor. Serious review aside, wouldn't it be appropriate if they served Rocky Mountain Oysters here? It isn't a far-fetched suggestion considering how well greasy food has been known to satisfy after a late-night of drinking... read more

This is a pretty cool little bar. I went here with a friend on a weeknight after dinner for a drink. There was a bit of a crowd but nothing jam-packed. The servers were cool and got us drinks quick. They had some decent local brews too. Has a nice casual/vintage feel. Not much else to say..worth checking out for some relaxing drinks! read more

The bull was a great relaxing place to go grab a drink! The bartender was awesome and the vibes were pretty chill. There were lots of cool decorations to look at around the place (we started playing a game to count all of the bulls we could find). I tried a really great blueberry saison that I really enjoyed. This place reminds me of one of my favorite cafe/bar combos from my hometown. I visited again recently and liked it even more. I've never been before dark, but I've heard this place has great coffee and the spacious tables are perfect for spreading out and studying all day. Unfortunately, The Bull can get pretty crowded pretty fast, but the baristas are knowledgeable (I've had great wine recommendations each time I've visited) and the beer and wine selection is excellent. Wow - I didn't know this place existed, but a friend brought me here a few weeks back and I was floored. Excellent (though minimal) draft beer selection, amazingly beautiful bar (with glass panels for housing small objets d'art). They seem like equal parts beer bar and wine bar. Artwork and general decor was tops, staff was super friendly and the entire vibe is verrry laid back, totally conducive to holding a conversation and just mellowing out. The night we went, some DJ was spinning some sweet dancehall jams most of the night - I also read something about a Tom Waits night they held recently. I think there's some good and interesting variety there. After a few pints, I realized they have some lovely baked desserts, and paired a chocolate muffin with my Swamp Head Midnight Oil which was devine. I definitely can't wait to go back soon. read more

Cute place but I'd give it zero stars if allowed. I love smaller pubs and walked in with my bf because we heard jazz. We're 30 years old, travel for work and we love checking out smaller areas and supporting smaller businesses. As soon as we walked in my my bf asked the older gentleman who was bartending where the bathrooms were. The response was short and not the nicest but we didn't think anything of it. While he went to the restroom the bartender asked me what I'd like. I asked if they had blue moon, he laughed and so did the customer sitting at the bar next to me... I didn't see the humor but smiled, I asked if he had anything similar. He rolled his eyes and took a step back from me, so I followed up my question with, "Something similar, what would you suggest?" Eye roll. "Craft beer wise, I love craft beer." He rolled his eyes again and his response was, "Well it's all craft beer," as he pointed at the taps. His demeanor was very off putting and at that point I realized I didn't want to waste my time or spend money at this place. I smiled and told him not to worry about it. His response, "Oh, so you're just here to let your buddy use the bathroom?" I smiled. Let's just say we walked out. The restroom was occupied so no worries, we didn't use the company's water either. I understand everyone has a bad day, the service industry isn't always pleasant. I work it, I know how it goes. But I always appreciate a polite consumer. I wish I could give this place ten stars out five. Seriously one of the best beer bars I've been to, anywhere. Lots of friendly interaction going on, knowledgeable and kind bartenders, perfect lighting, quirky decorations, adequate and comfortable seating (both at the bar and the tables), and the bathroom is really clean and huge (I like big WCs for some reason). Both of the times I've been, they've had different artwork on the walls. Not just some random artwork done by the manager's cool friend, but a really well thought out theme to match the vibe. I can't say enough good things about The Bull--the folks who work here are always friendly and knowledgable, and make sure it's a terrific evening whether you're a group of 2 or 20. Unlike pretty much every other bar save Alcove, it's well lit, calm enough to have a conversation, and simply a welcome addition to downtown Gainesville--a bar for adults in a town with too few of them. Would definitely suggest Volta around the corner if you're looking for good coffee. Pastries were great, though, with a wide variety of appetizers/snacks. The atmosphere is probably one of the best in town: big windows, big tables (which forces you to make friends) and rotating local art. I don't drink alcohol, so I can't speak for the beer/wine selection, but from what I've heard it's great as well. I go here at least 3 times a week. You should, too. read more

I really disl ike this place. I did not mind it when it first opened and went there pretty regularly. Despite that, the bartenders acted like I was not a regular, which is rather rude. I also am not into the fact that the prices keep increasing. I don't think there is anything great about this place and much rather go somewhere else when I go out. They are a little too overly-confident that their limited beer selection and art will swoon people. It probably will, but there is not much customer service or good beer, so why waste your money. read more

The Bull is a really great bar and (during the day) a nice study space. The beers on tap are always amazing, and between 5 and 9 ever day they actually have $1 off draft beers and wine. There's also a great bottled beer selection. The servers are crazy knowledgeable about beer and wine, and also get drinks quickly (even when it gets busy because there's a show going on). They have coffee, tea, and free wifi, so it makes a great place to do work (especially if you want a beer option later in the day). They also have a great selection of life music (with no cover!), and often bring people in from out of town. The open mics on Thursday are great, and occasionally they have a stand-up comedy open mic on Monday, which is always really fun. Also, the space is really cool, and they rotate work from local artists. The bartenders also have rotating comic book runs in the display case that you can read, which is an awesome idea. Definitely check it out if you have a chance. read more

An acoustic set by two college aged kids (and their harmonizing friend occasionally), who played all original music that reminded me of listening to a young James Taylor!! We were definitely the "Adults" in the cool kids crowd, but a very relaxing evening...minus the class clown spinning quarters on the table next to us. I gave him a dollar to quit so we could enjoy the final set! :P read more
