I did my smog check with him unexpectedly two years ago and I just went because it was near my house but I was very pleasantly surprised at his knowledge and customer service. There probably can't be better customer service in any business than I got today from Edgar at Prunedale today. I blew a wheel bearing in my car as I got to town at 3 Pm on a Friday while driving to Ventura. The chances of getting a repair done this late in the day should have been zero. But not only did Edgar and Rahon (sp?) move heaven and earth, they drove me to Autozone in Salinas to get the brake pads at 7:30 at night. Took my car in for a smog check and it failed, which honestly it was expected, I knew it needed some major work done. Edgar let me know what needed to be done and gave me some options. I know nothing about cars, but he made sure I understood what the issue was. He ordered the part and let me know when my car would be ready. When the part arrived he let me know while working on it they found a "cross brace" ‍ that would eventually need replacement. Had a flat tire when I got to my car in the morning. Thought it might be a fluke, as I had a lot of weight in the trunk of the car from a project I was working on. Put air in prior to a few appointments, but tire went low two more times during the day. Ugh! Since I was needing to be in Monterey with friends at the end of the day, my friend scheduled to have me stop at Prunedale Tires on a Friday at the EOD. Nail in the sidewall. Double ugh! Quick, reliable and honest mechanics. A drive-thru style service station right off 101. A full service check costs only $39. You just sit in your car (and play on your iPhone) as they do their work from below. Rarely have I ever waited for service, and the oil change itself only takes 15 minutes. I drive through Prunedale every other month. I stop in while passing through to get an oil change and fluid check. I never take my car anywhere else. They check all lights, fluids, tires and filters, wipers and belts. I haven't experienced any car trouble since taking my car here but they can do other more serious automotive maintenance if you call ahead. read more

I have been going to Edgar since he took over ownership of this shop and he is the only mechanic that I trust with all of my toys. I even switched to him to service my Mercede S550 which was not an easy decision. The last service that he did on that vehicle, was an example of why I take it there. Early in 2021, he replaced the brakes and the actual disks and 6 months later, I was not happy that it made a horrible noise and I took it back to him and he replaced them again and I was shocked that my invoice was $0. He explained that the part was still under warranty and that it was only right to replace them at no cost to me. That is honesty which is hard to find. I live in Monterey and going to Prunedale is out of my way but I still go there because it is worth it. Trust me, give Edgar a try and drive from Santa Cruz if you have to but you will not regret it. read more

Dont Go Here. I don't know who they paid to give them good reviews? In for a smog check - It all passed, except for a test, they should have done first, which is a fuel evap pressure test.(I never heard of it before). It is a separate test aside from the OBD2 test. It failed but they charged us full price as if the vehicle passed. The guy was a unprofessional - he had no other customers waiting but wouldn't explain the problem and he refused to let us speak with his boss. The policy is they will retake the test for a 1/2 the price of 28.00(wow, great deal) We fixed the problem took it back 2 days later and they said no, but made a next morning appt. The next day he didn't show up for the appt. We had to go elsewhere and complete the test-It passed. I reported them this time. A family member from out of town he didn't know their reputation, but this is the second time they did this to me, the first time they didn't follow the correct procedure, I had bought a new battery and the car needed to be driven longer before the test could be done-they charged me full price anyway. and I took my car immediately to another place and it passed. Something is wrong with the smog station attendants training. They refuse to do a pre-check. read more

Prunedale Auto Repair was a huge disappointment. I had ordered the part needed two weeks in advance of my appointment. They didn't even order the part until I brought the car in the day of the appointment. The repair should have only taken till noon but since it took till 5:00, I decided to leave my car overnight. I had arranged to pick up my car at 11am the next day but Edgar did not show up to open the shop till 1:30. We had called him numerous times and went by the shop five times to no avail. When Edgar FINALLY showed up at 1:30, he said he slept in then hosed down his patio. When asked why he was late, he responded by saying "you have to get to know me". That will never happen because I will never return or recommend this place. I had recommended this place to my friends but called them back to share my horrible experience. I was extremely disappointed and frustrated! read more

Prunedale Auto Repair is under new management as of November 2018. Edgar is the new owner, very conscientious and customer service oriented. While I only had an oil and filter change, his pricing was fair. I have a 6cyl Terrain that uses 6 qts of oil. I had checked the manufacturer's recommended oil and Edgar was right on top of it. He also had pulled the required oil filter the night before to make sure they had it in stock. I made an appointment, and he was right on time for taking my service. Often people make appointments, then either don't show up or don't cancel. So, I suggest making an appointment, if you want to wait while the service is done, and if something changes in your schedule, call and cancel, so he can schedule another customer. Paolo did the actual oil change, and was very prompt. I wish the Edgar as the new owner, great success. read more
