I wanted to give a positive review for oral surgeon Dr. Peter Protzel and his amazing staff who are located in Bethpage. I needed four wisdom teeth removed in a hospital setting due to other complex and rare medical conditions I have. For the past year, I went to six other oral surgeons explaining the care I need and each of them couldn't accommodate my needs for a variety of reasons. After advocating for myself and my wisdom teeth getting progressively worse, I found Dr. Peter Protzel & his staff, who were able to do my surgery in the hospital setting I needed. His incredible staff worked with my insurance company to get the surgery approved through my health insurance. It's been a little over 1 week post op and I'm back to my regular self, no more swelling, and the recovery was much better than I expected. Dr. Protzel in my eyes, was the only oral surgeon that actually was able to have empathy for my complex situation and I'm thankful for him and his staff's dedication to my health. If you are a simple or complex case for oral surgery, and looking for a great office to have your surgery, or need a hospital setting- I recommend Dr. Peter Protzel. read more

I've had considerable experience with oral surgeons and other dental professionals (some not so good), and can honestly say that Dr. Protzel is the best of the best! I needed extractions, complex bone grafts and implants to fix the damage from failed root canals done by another doctor. Not an easy procedure to get right, but Dr. Protzel did a wonderful job with skill and compassion. From the moment I booked my first appointment with his ultra friendly assistant Karen through the actual procedures, Dr. Protzel and his staff couldn't have been more caring and professional. Pricing is clear and upfront with no shenanigans as I've experienced elsewhere, and all follow-up visits are included. The office runs on time and Dr. Protzel has the latest technology in his office including 3D scans. Being a coward I opted for anesthesia for the extractions and that went perfectly too. I can't say enough good things about this office, its staff, and the oral surgeons who work there. Everyone there is pleasant and knowledgeable to say the least. I arrived and waited, maybe 5 minutes, if that. They took me in for x-rays, for which they have state-of-the-art equipment. While standing the x-ray machine travels around your head. Super convenient and very well done. I dealt with Ms. Christine and Dr. Levine. I can't say enough great things about both of them. When I arrived, I was a bit anxious, both Ms. Christine and Dr. Levine set me at ease and handled their business in the best and least painful way possible. I think many doctors could learn a thing or ten from Dr. Levine, in particular his chairside/bedside manner and professionalism. I would also like to say that his overall energy and positivity was refreshing and was most appreciated. Dr. Levine was just fantastic. Overall, I had the absolute best experience I could have there considering what I was there for. I could not ask for more. If you need oral surgery there simply is no where better to go. While I hope I don't need oral surgery in the future, I know where I will be going if I do. I do want to acknowledge the front office staff as well who were just great to deal with, in particular Karen who was very helpful and professional. This office has no idea what they are doing. Call for an appointment for my husband and specifically tell them he has TMJ and needs a cortisone injection. No problem they tell me, they also tell me they take his insurance. Wait over three weeks for the appointment and on the eve of the appointment I get a confirmation call:can you come in 30 minutes early to do paper work oh and by the way we don't take your insurance so the consultation fee is $$$ and if he needs x-rays it's $$$. No he is coming in for cortisone injection - oh no we don't do that in this office. Who did I speak to 3 weeks ago???? You call the day before to let me know you don't take my insurance. This was by far the most pleasing experience I've had with an oral surgeon. I had my two bottom wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Balacky. I was mildly sedated during the procedure. Although i felt the last of the extraction, it wasn't unbearable. Prior to surgery, he informed me of what happens during the procedure, expectations and risks associated with the surgery. Recovery was annoying but that was expected. The office provides you with all the necessary steps you need to take before and after surgery. Overall, the staff was very friendly and welcoming. The waiting area is minuscule and they scheduled about 8 people at the same time of the morning - 10am. It felt like I was in a pizza place waiting for my slice to be finished. We were all crammed together dutifully wearing our masks ... although they did make it known that waiting outside in the hallway was also fine. I was there for a first time consult and arrived about 5-10 minutes before my appointment time. After 30 minutes of waiting without seeing anyone I had to leave. My feeling is that if they are not going to be respectful for the time of their patients that leaves me a bit distrustful as to how they will handle situations where the surgery doesn't go so smooth. As I was leaving I encountered a young dark haired woman who was very dismissive with a bad attitude sitting behind the desk. Another worker (a bit nicer with 22 years of service) came out to the waiting area and asked if I was in pain and that they would be willing to see me. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late. I cannot go back and can only imagine the kind of treatment that I would receive once I have been classified as a complainer. Fortunately there appear to be other oral surgeons in the area who take the time to make their patients comfortable and also respect the schedule of their patients. I get the feeling that most of their existing clientele is elderly and probably retired. read more

Had an excellent experience at this office. I can't say enough great things about this place. Easy drive, ample parking, cleanly facility, an amazing staff, just to name a few. I came to have all 4 wisdom teeth extracted in one sitting. I was a nervous wreck, I despise going to the dentist, let alone an oral surgeon lol. I had a good feeling about going here from the moment, Karen, picked up the phone. What an absolute GEM. She booked me an appointment, verified all my insurance info and I was all set in a matter of seconds. The day I arrived, I was brought in pretty much right as soon as I arrived. One of the staff, Christine, brought me in, took X-rays and walked me through all the paperwor, then soon after I met the doc. I had the pleasure of being under the care of Dr. Peter Balacky. At first I was surprised as I thought I was going to be seen by Dr. Protzel but I didn't mind(Never actually met Dr. Protzel). Dr. Balacky looked over my xrays, told me what to expect, everything vital and important to my case specifically. Everything moved so fast and before I knew it, I was being injected with the sedation. I floated into a nice little high and I could barely remember or feel anything besides being told to breathe and open my mouth lol. I was in and out in about 30-40 minutes? I felt like it was only 2 seconds. I woke up, was walked into a waiting area, and next thing I knew my Fiance was here to pick me up while laughing at me(still dont know why). Over the next few days, I had minimal swelling, pain was inconsistent and no where near as bad as i thought, though I did take all my meds lol.This man did an excellent EXCELLENT job. Came back for my follow up a week later and everything was great, just gotta wait and heal. Thankfully this is a once in a lifetime thing but if i had to do it again, I'd come right back here. The staff and doctor are all very nice and accommodating. I was having wisdom tooth issues for years where it would attempt to grow in, cause pain then stop. I ignored it for a long time knowing eventually I would have to get them removed. Fast fwd to the beginning of this year, the pain was almost unbearable, I would take ibuprofin still ignoring the issues (please don't judge). Fast fwd to maybe March, still in a lot of pain, I notice I have a literal cut in my gum in the wisdom tooth area :(. The pain, the horror. Was very difficult to eat sometimes but I still kind of ignored it. I did make an appt with a different oral surgeon but due to the virus, it was cancelled. I understood and because the discomfort was bearable, I waited for them to open back up. Fast fwd again to May, the pain was unbearable, I noticed my gum in that area was swollen and my jaw was sensitive so now I can't ignore it and the original office I was going to was neglectful even after I told them my issues and was still closed. I call Dr. Protzel's office (after calling an emergency 24hr dentist office the night before and getting antibiotics and pain meds prescribed) and was given an appointment the next day! Thank God! I was pretty nervous as I never had any type of surgery before and the fact that it was the dentist made it worse lol. So, I walk in, I get a 360 x-ray, the Dr comes in explains to me in detail the findings of the x-ray, what will happen if I leave them and suggests I take them out. Though only my bottom right tooth was impacted, he advised I take the top one out too as this is what is actually causing a lot of the irritation as well when I'm biting. He explained to me the surgery, asked if I'm nervous and suggested I get a small dose of sedation to ease my nerves, this is not the same as being completely under anesthesia. Filled out some paperwork before the surgery, contacted my family member because I wouldn't be able to drive after sedation. Dr. P explained how quick the procedure will be and what to expect afterward as well as giving me an instruction sheet. They have a small recovery area in which I left my belongings before heading to the surgery room. Dr. P injected an IV, told me exactly when he was injecting the sedation and the next thing I know, I woke up in the recovery room. According to my text time stamps and my ride, the procedure lasted about 20 minutes. Overall, great experience.. a little over 1 month later, my top gum seems to be healed up but because my bottom one was so impacted, it's taking longer to heal (which Dr. P explained). But no more pain! Great experience. read more

Dr. Peter was excellent with a slightly more difficult extraction. His constant reporting about what was happening was comforting, especially as it related to pain (lack thereof) and time left to go in the procedure. The results so far are excellent. Another thing, the staff was also excellent from reception to desk assistants. I had to see the covering Dentist (sorry, name unremembered) and while his style was rather dry, if not distant, his diagnosis and care were also excellent. I've recommended this office to my general dentist for his other referrals. read more

Peter Protzel is a great Oral Surgeon. I had a deep cavity on my lower left wisdom tooth and that same wisdom tooth got an abscess infection? Someone i know recommended me to go to Peter. I went to Peter and he told me nicely how the tooth would be removed. I went under anesthesia and Peter got the wisdom tooth out quickly. I really had no pain after the wisdom tooth was removed. I highly recommend going to Peter if you need an Oral Surgeon in the NY area. He is top notch. read more

When calling to schedule my appointment, I was greeted over the phone with one of the nicest medical receptionists I've ever spoken with. One the day of my appointment, I experienced little wait time and was able to meet with the doctor right away. They were very informative and were able to provide me with the information about my wisdom teeth that I needed clearly and concisely.
