Lots of TVs, nice big bar w/ pub tables on the side. We've been here before, but something changed for the better. My wife and I popped in a few weeks back for a drink since we were in the area and decided to grab a bite after looking through the menu. I ordered the sliced prime rib sangwich while my wife went with the Reuben. I'm not a fan of Reuben mainly because I'm not a sauerkraut fan, but she said it had to have been the best Reuben she's ever eaten in her life. I would have to take her word for it because she is a great cook with an impeccable palate. I enjoyed my sliced prime rib sangwich immensely. Great job to the guys in the kitchen and thanks a lot to Anthony who was tending bar and giving us advice on the menu. The Prospect Tavern is average all around. Nothing is terrible or inedible, it just is that nothing stands out as being above average. We came here this past Sunday night, a party of 7 --- 3 adults, 4 children. From the outside, it looks like it would be a charming older atmosphere inside. However, it is fairly non-descript inside and doesn't have much "tavern" charm. There is an outdoor patio which looks to be a good place to enjoy a drink on a nice evening. The menu contains a wide range of food --- appetizers, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, entrees, salads. I ordered a chicken murphy which was probably not the best choice for here. Once again, it wasn't terrible, but it was not great. The chicken was fairly tender and the peppers and potatoes were cooked nicely, although the sausage was mediocre, not tasting too much like real italian sausage and the sauce served with the dish was bland and something that seemed made for a turkey dish vs. chicken murphy. Two of the children had the sirloin steak and enjoyed them quite a bit. They looked like to be cooked to how they were ordered and the boys were able to get french fries instead of the grits. Two people ordered the buffalo chicken salads and felt the buffalo sauce was quite spicy, a bit more than they expected. Finally, the last order was a sirloin sandwich, aka french dip. The menu said it was served on a french roll, but it came on something more like a hamburger roll and the meat contained a bit more fat than normally found on french dips. Overall, you may have a decent experience ordering a burger here, but based on our meal, I would veer too far beyond that and expect anything better than average here. read more

I like this place but WHYYYYYY is there no happy hour outside in the summer??? We drive a few towns away and go elsewhere because when it's a beautiful afternoon we want to enjoy it! Makes no sense, the bar is literally closer to the outside patio than anything else inside the restaurant. We would probably go multiple times a week if this changes. We went here last Friday night. We are not from the area so we were passing through with a bunch of kids with us and two couples. We called ahead so they would have a table for us and that they were still open. They told us if we could get there by 9:30PM they would be able to serve us. We got there about ten minutes late and it was no problem. Very nice staff and good service. Sorry but that's about as good as it gets here. The bar was rockin. Lots of people loud music. My fiancée and I ate and drank at the bar here tonight and it was awesome. The drinks were on point. They also had a little cool jukebox that you can play music off of. It had an app you can use so you didn't have to keep getting up. Food was awesome. We had the turkey brie wrap and the cajun chicken sandwich. We asked for that on a wrap as well and they were fine with it. Loved them both. Nice little spot for a cocktail and to hang out. Stopped in for a pre-dinner cocktail based on the reviews that it was a good spot for a drink. The bar area looks like it's a good spot to chill and catch a game from time to time. They have half off happy hour everyday from 3-6 if I remember the sign correctly which we just missed. A decent craft beer selection, outside seating, and good views of the TV mean we will return to give it another try. We didn't eat so I can't comment on the food. Will edit next time if we grab a bite to eat. The main issue for me was the bartender looked bored beyond belief even thought the bar was about half full on a Sunday at 6 pm. This place is what it is - a really cool local tavern. They've been in business forever, and the Prospect Tavern is definitely an icon in Madison. DJ Mike is a pleasure and we occasionally like to order drinks and watch his music videos. This is also a great spot for people-watching. They have a good selection of beer on tap at reasonable prices. The bartenders are all incredible people who deliver great service. First visit here...and probably my last. There's something a bit charming about the old-style tavern decor and the small al fresco dining area looks inviting. The bar area seemed to be busier than the dining room. The menu here is somewhat limited. As always, I inquired about the fish--i.e., whether it was farmed. I was assured that it was not, but I wasn't convinced. So I opted for the portobello (veggie) burger. What should have been a safe option was totally uninteresting and tasteless. The mushroom contained no seasoning whatsoever, the onion and peppers were raw, and they were served on a large, flavorless white cottony roll which they could not even bother to toast. On the bright side, the sweet potato fries were good and they gave us a ton to share. And my friend had the herb-encrusted lemon chicken and said that it was delish. As others have noted, the servers here are nice and attentive. I think that this is probably a nice place to hang-out with friends to have drinks and watch sports. They have a great deal on happy hour, I never have had a problem finding a seat at the bar area at this time. It is a mixed aged crowd, you have your young people coming home from work then you get an older group of people but it all blends well. Purchased a discount voucher on Amazon...Before the purchase I called and spoke to a manager to ask if I could use it at the bar. I was told yes as long as I purchased food with my drink. So I purchased these vouchers...I went there and was told by the owner that they stopped allowing it at the bar two weeks ago. I said I wouldn't have purchased them since we come to eat at the bar in a large group. Hate to do this! I really wanted to like this place. To start al though the waiter was very nice, the service was terrible. Waited forever for everything and nothing came out together. Especially my sons plain pizza that was last. I ordered the black and bleu burger. Thought it would be a good choice for a "tavern". Unfortunately as it was placed down I knew right away I would not be happy. It was a pre made patty. The cheap ones you get frozen with the little sheets stuck to them. The burger was 1/4" thick. I order my burgers medium rare, this was the typical hockey puck! The waiter apologized which it wasn't his fault and removed it from the bill. That was about it he did offer to make another one but considering how long we waited already I said don't worry. It's a shame cause it was busy and the atmosphere was cool. I just never would imagine a tavern using those hockey puck frozen burgers. read more

Great, local tavern in Madison. This place has solid food and a great atmosphere. I'm a sucker for local bars with great vibes, and that's why this is a five star in my book. The bar has a horse shoe layout. I came in mid afternoon, and proceeded to see locals fill in the bar one by one through the late afternoon. The crowd was very friendly.
