its a great place to go alone. its a great place to go in groups, or with your doggy. i love my neighborhood :) read more

There are so many places to just go at it in the shade/woods/totally secluded area. That gets 4 stars by itself. Whether you're actually in a relationship with that someone is debatable. I've been here a couple times now, so now I'm able to review it. First, I took a walk along the west border of the park. I visited all the little buildings within on a Sunday afternoon, and it was very serene, a little chilly, and just really nice. I thought thoughts, and bred more intricacies about life. I also went here recently for a friend's birthday picnic thing. We had pizza, which was sort of odd, but we also did a little wiffle ball action. The problem was we were drinking as well. So instead of drinking water or Gatorade, my thirst was quenched by a nutritious Coors Light. Over and over again. This proved tiring as 6 beers in the afternoon while playing a sport, no matter how leisurely, can get to you. As well, I was by the Brooklyn Library, and I noticed there was some reggae and rap gathering up on the hill (Prospect Park Hill?) behind it. I went upstairs, and as I got there, I noticed it was kind of a black political rally, kind of a live music afternoon, kind of a hangout/barbeque. Not to look like an idiot, I nonchalantly walked about, getting eyes from just about everyone because I think I was the only non-black person there. That was fine, I didn't care, I was here to check out the scene. Then it got a little hostile; a little heckling here, a little name calling there, and before you know it random dudes are trying to get my attention and getting me to come hither. Wasn't really in the mood, so I ended up walking away. The hilarious thing was all the white people who were like "oo what's this, a festival" were total scaredy cats and turned away without even walking into the crowd. But I agree, the great thing about this park is the space. It's not square like CP, it's got this flow to it like you don't know exactly where you're going, but you don't care either. Problem there is a less safe side to the park, and a more safe side. Depending on how you like your level of danger, Austin Powers. read more

When I was looking for an apartment, I had three major requirements: be near the train, be safe, and be near Prospect Park. I really love Prospect Park. This big open space has been a Brooklyn institution since it opened in 1867. It's ideal for: * walking/jogging/running * bicycling/rollerblading/skateboarding * grilling/picnicking * watching and playing organized or pickup sports games * letting kiddos run around in several age-appropriate playgrounds * taking the dog for a swim at 'dog beach' * great NYC people watching My favorite weekend activity is bringing a big picnic blanket, grabbing some snacks at a deli along the way, toting along a novel, and enjoying the fresh air in the park. I bring the dog too and he makes several 'friends' as we go towards our favorite spot. My husband and I joke that instead of having a backyard, we have a park. Prospect Park truly feels like a million little shared backyards filled with a random smattering of activity on any given day. It's a true slice of Brooklyn here. read more

To my mind, Prospect Park outclasses Central Park in its sheer utility, with places to barbecue, boat, sun, hike, and playground equipment. That cars are allowed in the loop is irksome (and dangerous) but it's worth it just to see that lake. Some caveats: If you want to avoid dogs, come before 9 PM and the off-leash hours. If you want to avoid the masses of privileged babes and their uninterested nannies, avoid the Park Slope side, especially the benched areas. If you want to avoid the smell of marijuana, avoid the Prospect-Lefferts entrance near Parkside. If you want to avoid public sex, steer clear of the wooded areas on the east side. It is still NYC, after all. read more

I haven't been in NY for that long yet, but soon after I arrived, I discovered Prospect Park. So much more quiet than Central Park, with so much more class and so much more real people there, this became my favorite part of NY within no time. Love it, and so will you! read more

Just ran the Battle of Brooklyn 10-miler and got a chance to see the whole park. It has beautiful scenery and plenty of room for runners and cyclists. Very nice park. read more

I love this park. It is beautiful, big, and tranquil. I walked through a great deal of the west side of e park today. The area by the boathouse is great. I sat there for quite a long time today watching the ducks long after it started raining. I am sure I will pay for that later. There is a carousel, zoo, and the historical Lefferts house. I have only visited the zoo- small, but affordable and quaint. I wanted to visit the mansion today, but it was closed. Another visit is in order. Well, many more visits. read more

Prospect Park is easily the best park in all of NYC. I mean that's what everyone thinks that lives in Brooklyn. There are a few lakes, a zoo, tons of places to sit down and relax, there are grills and you cannot forgot the summer concerts. If anyone disagrees with me they are clearly insane. Another cool thing about Prospect Park is that it goes through tons of different neighborhoods in Brooklyn. So you could walk in, in one neighborhood and end up in an entirely different one. Cool right? Everytime I leave the park i manage to find the cutest places to sit down and have a snack. Oh yeah and the mango ladies hang out there, anyone who knows me knows that, that is very important. read more

So my friend came in from DC and told me there was a chile festival. This of course resulted in numerous chili con carneval jokes, Leo realizing he was not going to be fed massive amounts of meaty stew (sorry dude) and a walk out to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Except the chile festival was on Sunday, not Saturday. Ooops. But Prospect Park is still amazingly beautiful. And huge. It's kinda far as compared to Central Park, but closer when I sleep on Leo's couch, which happens from time to time. read more

Can't we all just agree that Prospect Park is WAY cooler than Central Park? Where else in this city can you go and be surrounded by grass and tress, no high rises in sight. It's true. Everytime I head up to Central Park, I feel like I need to adjust my makeup before throwing the frisbee. Prospect Park, on the other hand, has a much more relaxed and peaceful feel to it. To me, it is more of an escape. And you gotta love Celebrate Brooklyn! ($3 suggested donation) and the other events that occur in the summer months. read more

This is such a great getaway spot. It is much more convenient than Central Park and gives you the same vibe and experience. They have great summer concerts, bring a blanket, snacks and wine and you are all set! read more

Prospect Park is fantastic. I feel like i'm not even in a city anymore when I'm there. There's lots of open room for playing catch, frisbee, or whatever you may feel, and plenty of trails and paths for biking/walking. I miss jogging there now that I don't live by it. read more

What's not to love about prospect park? I must agree I love this place more than Central Park. Maybe it's because I'm a native Brooklynite and I'm a little biased. But it's less overcrowded with tourists, and there are ton more places to picnic. And when I walk though this park it's a lot easier to forget that I'm in the city for an hour or two. And there's lots of great restaurants, shops and other things to explore in nearby Park Slope and Prospect Heights. read more

Enjoy the live performances surrounded by nature, while not too far from the Park Slope bars/restaurants after the event. Our good ol' F Train navigates her way around this neigborhood too, excruciatingly slowly however. Nice substitute for Central Park because of the suburban feel to it. read more

Prospect park is beautiful, the floor is a little rough, looks like a lot of people go there and park doesn't have that many upgrades. But overall, it was nice, I will be going back, I thought it was nice and peaceful. I'll be back in the spring/summer. I went in the winter. It was pretty cold. read more

This park is terrific. Running, walking, bike riding, relaxing, BBQing, 5k racing, concert attending, drum circle partaking, peddle boating... you can do it all in Prospect Park. The main road within the park is a 3.5 mile circle, so it's perfect for a quick jog at the end of the day. And actually, the road around the entire perimeter of the park (the outside of the park) is a little under 4 miles, and equally pleasant (lots of cool brownstones and pre-war buildings). I'd recommend running in either place. It seems as though there's a 5K in the park every weekend, which is great. Usually they're $20, and it's a great place for a race. Really, it couldn't be better. If you're looking to ride your bike, the road is well maintained - a good surface for road bikes. My only complaint (4 stars, not 5) about the entire park is that they allow cars at certain hours. The cars will assert their authority by driving dangerously close to cyclists and pedestrians. Completely unnecessary. It's definitely big enough to get lost in, which is nice. And there's even some elevation change: a welcome rarity in NYC. I love this park, and feel lucky to live so close. read more

Lungs of Brooklyn. This is only green surface in Brooklyn.... good place to have fresh air or maybe only place.

Skip Central Park for once and make the trip to this green oasis in Brooklyn, you won't regret it.

No matter it was very cold that day I was really excited of what I have seen! One of my favourite park of NYC read more

See all

I've been in Brooklyn for 4 years now and I have spent 2 of them living next to Prospect Park. I've never been adventageous of this, minus the few times I've gone to a cook out or listened to a show or two at the bandshell. It's only since I've been running the loop in the morning that I have fully learned to appreciate the vastness and geographic diversity of this park. First off, running around the park is about 4 miles, which is pretty fracking big, considering that Brooklyn has become overdeveloped and there is not much space for expanses of land. Secondly, during my runs, I get to see: a beautiful pond, an aviary, a grassy pasture, little kiddies playing on the playground, and a cute cafe. Not to mention serveral amazing dogs, cute boys and girls in running shorts and various other flora and fauna. These factors make up for the other not so lovely things, such as: the homeless man that I saw jerking off at 8am, the St. Ives bottle that I had to kick out of my whilst running today, and the mother who was smoking a cigarette and blowing the smoke into her baby carriage. I will contend that we do live in a city, and it's not like these unplesantries don't exist in Central Park, either. I feel incredibly lucky I have this resource so close by. read more

It's my favorite place. So much green space, so much life - human and wild. It's magically landscaped and untamed at the same time. I love that you can get far enough away from the edges of the park to not be able to hear traffic. It's where I learned to love birds and notice the details of nature. read more

As the locals can affirm; its far better than the silly childishness of Central Park. Still not great; but at least let's give it some credit where its due. read more

No brainer. Can't tell you how excited I get during the warm weather months to live 2 blocks from this large slice of heaven. Great free concerts, paddle boats, a zoo. Maybe best of all is the quaint piece of mind it lends while simply reading a book under a large shade tree. Many thumbs up. read more

Better than Central Park, and a heavenly oasis from the busy Brooklyn. I loved going here when I lived in NYC, sometimes just for a run, sometimes for an evening stroll or some major exploring. Either way, a wonderful place to be! read more

It's like the Central Park of Brooklyn. I love this park! It's a great place to walk, run/jog, bike, frisbee, picnic and [insert favorite fun park activity here!]! This is the place to go if you need a nice getaway from city life! read more

Went to see a salsa band play here last night. An oasis filled with a complete diversity of people - old, young, every ethnic and socioeconomic background - together in harmony. Kind of like Glide Memorial Church in a park. Been to NY about a bajillion times, but never saw this. You don't feel like you are in or near NY, which is brilliant. read more

I love this park, don't get me wrong. It's beautiful, has great trails and wildlife, is central and frequented by all sorts of different kinds of Brooklynites. But I want to make a statement. The fences surrounding it make me feel like I'm in a lush, beautiful jail cell. I remember when parks weren't surrounded by these terrible bars. They can say it's for our safety, against sexual violence or gangs, but I'd honestly feel less safe if I was attacked and were the running type. An assailant would have you cornered, unless you had any skill at jumping fences and not getting cut on the sharp spikes. read more

This may sound like I'm a park snob, but this is the best park in New York City. There's so much room for activities and picnics and all of this cool stuff. There's great big tracts of land with people playing tons of different sports. read more

I've never been tempted to write a review about a park but Prospect Park makes me feel alllllll of the warm and fuzzies. It's the best park in New York, hands down. Take that, Central Park. You make me want to get up and run through you, which is saying a lot. I always find something new to appreciate! A fantastic park that has all of the charm without any of the annoying tourists. Plus a lake. Plus swans. Doesn't get any better. read more

Prospect Park is a great place to ride, run, and relax. It's beautiful at all times of the year. I'd love to give this place five stars ... However, in the mornings and evenings -- you know, when most of us suckers with jobs have time to exercise -- the park is open to vehicular traffic. The speed limit may be 25 mph, but in reality, vehicles speed through there at much higher speeds, often honking their horns and driving menacingly close to cyclists and pedestrians to make their point. It is a very dangerous situation. Plus, it's a PARK! Whose idea was it to turn one of Brooklyn's only green spaces into a highway? read more

I may be shunned from Brooklyn forever for giving Prospect Park three stars, but hear me out. It became apparent just how little I go to Brooklyn when after 3.5 years of living in the city, I went to Prospect Park for the first time...to run a race. It also became apparent just how many places I see/go to for the first time while running. It was a cold winter morning. As my mom would say, "You're dressed for summer" (not actual summer, but I didn't dress appropriately for the sub-32 degree weather in an attempt to not check any baggage and forgot my gloves). It was 8 am. The park was full of runners and only runners. The trees were barren. The sky was cloudy. Everything felt dead. I didn't feel the vibrance that I do when running through Central Park. I did, however, feel the pain of a very long and drawn-out hill, like I do when running through Central Park. Maybe I should've waited until I go back to review. But this is my first, true experience with the park and this is how I feel. I will be back (when it's warm and sunny and I'm not running). I will give it another star (or two). I promise. read more

So freaking awesome! Music, playgrounds, random architecture, and vendors. Central Park is the ghetto version of here.

This park is hugeeeeeeee!! You better bet on a nice sunny day you'll see a TON of bbq/people. Everything is just poppin. If you want to run, you'll see plenty of runners and bikers on the park roads. If you want to relax, bring a picnic blanket and find any spot. There's a part of the lake where you can rowbow/petal boat also. I haven't tried it but I think it's worth doing! They have a zoo as well! If you want to go hiking you can also do that; there are plenty of stairs for you to climb (and maybe get lost.) Not sure what else to say but this is definitely worth checking out if you're near the area. read more

The first Saturday of every month FIDO in Prospect Park (www.fidobrooklyn.com) sponsors Coffee Bark. one of my best girlfriends lives directly across the street, and we try to take a walk through every time we visit. there are all sorts of paths, and you can spend hours just walking or biking. it's very pretty, and there's tons of crap to see! people playing sports, people having bbq's, dogs tearing around...always something to see. you can lay in the grass and snooze, or people watch. there are always vendors selling cold drinks and ice cream in the summer, and pretzels and snacks. the best part about it though is DOG BEACH. we take sarge there in the summer and he goes crazy! there are a million dogs swimming around, and playing catch and it is the cutest thing ever to watch. i miss you, brooklyn! read more

I forgot to mention it is my favorite place to be on New Year's Eve. What a great place to have a New Year's smooch. When 2000 rolled in Marty Markowitz our cutie pie Borough President through a great party. Grand Army Plaza was packed. There was live music and fireworks. It was so awesome. Of course there have been fireworks in the park since at least the mid 90's. And they still have them. If you've never been then definitely go this year. You see families and friends come together to ring in the New Year. And if you're lucky you may even witness a few marriage proposals. Oh no is that tear forming? read more

God, I love Prospect Park. I live a little over 2 miles away in Bed Stuy, and riding my bike over to the park, then around the loop a couple times is one of my favorite things ever. Throw on the headphones, chill out in one of the sprawling meadows and gaze up at the sky - quite a way to waste an afternoon. Great for running too, mostly flat, but with a mildly challenging hill near the end. The best part is that there's always more to see, just move off the main road and you'll find some cool trails leading back into the dense trees. Not quite as romantic as Central Park, but way less crowded (usually) and touristy. A must-see for anyone spending time in Brooklyn. read more

I love riding my bike in Prospect Park but BEWARE, the last quarter mile is uphill & it's NO JOKE! Make sure you're gears are working properly or you will feel the wrath of PP! read more

Best park in the city. Be careful for dangerous dumbies riding bikes the wrong direction around the loop.

Prospect Park is going home to me. it is where my friends and I rode our bikes, went to the zoo, ice skated, played football, ran to after studying at the Grand Army Plaza library. The hills which looked massive to me at age 10 now hold a comfortable store of memories of youth for me.The Park has been brought back to its glory with well maintained walking trails and paths. It is a stunning park, considered by its designers as their masterpiece (notwithstanding that they also designed Central Park). The lake and boathouse have been restored, a doggie beach has been built (mine (Scout) would not go in..the wimp) but there are still people playing football, launching rockets and riding their bikes. read more
