Visited for the first time after living in Harrisburg for 2 years. This restaurant was a nice surprise. Not only is it a local place but the food and service was excellent. The prices are a little high but there portion sizes more than make up for it. They have not only a large menu of choices but also an extensive wine list. I was surprised to see how busy they were on a Sat night but now I know why. Although some patrons were dressed casually there were also many that were dressed up and there for a special occasion. I liked the ambience of the entire place and the crowd was a little older which to me just tells ya the food is good. I would return again and recommend to all my friends. read more

Don't get Progress Grill, never did. I think they are good at what they are - a slightly-nicer meat and potatoes place that is consistent and safe. Food is average, although everything is heavily buttered/oiled/salted which no doubt adds flavor. Decor - think run down asssisted living facility. And with lots of senior patrons they usually fit right into the setting. It's a step above for Harrisburg, but a step below if you branch out a bit. It's a Harrisburg institution for sure. read more

Went Saturday night. Busy as usual. We ordered delmonicos with mushrooms. Salad was ok as was baked potato. Steak was very good although mushrooms were cold and tasted like canned mushrooms. Not what you'd expect from a good restaurant! Dessert was a real disappointment. Crème Brûlée came right from refrigerator. Seriously. We go here for special occasions. I get the steaks....very good and large. My better half always gets the crabcakes, who she says is the best in town. The place is a little dumpy looking on the outside and would be nice if they remodeled about bit but I guess they figure why bother..the people still keep coming!! Overall highly rated at 4 stars...reserving 5 for the appearance and price, which is a little on the high side but not too bad. (do not get the veal, save this for an Italian restaurant...it was just ok).. edit 9/12. They remodeled and looks nice. I am puzzled by another review saying this is in the XXX part of town. Not sure what that means, its not even remotely close to the nude bars/x rated video stores miles up the road. Its not even in a bad part of town and there is plenty of parking. We took my mom for her birthday dinner. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff very friendly. The food? Wow! Mom's t-bone was huge and perfectly prepared. I had the seafood a la Chesapeake which was incredible...my husband enjoyed the Seafood Chemise. We all stuck our forks in his entree and were amazed. That is what I will order the next time. I'm not one for handing out gratuitous praise. If I praise an establishment, it is because I highly value what it has to offer. So, I'm ashamed to admit that after dining at the Progress Grille (note correct spelling) for more than 30 years, I think that I had never taken the time to write a review. That's a major error of omission on my part, and I'm correcting it now. The service, steaks, prime rib and seafood here are truly wonderful. Let me give you an example. My wife and I dined here most recently this past Saturday night (1/8/21). I started with the seafood bisque. It is literally loaded with scrumptious shellfish in a delicious broth. I then had their traditional (i.e., non-Greek) salad with some of my wife's blue cheese crumbles and French dressing. It was very fresh. The lettuce was crisp and the tomato was firm and juicy, just the way I like them. Joanne, our amazing waitress, brought a basket of delicious rolls with the salads. For my main dish, I chose the Kansas (City?) bone-in ribeye, medium rare with their delectable rice pilaf. The two side dishes (in my case salad and rice pilaf) come with the meal at no extra charge. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. It takes a large portion to fill me up, and Nick and John (owners) are very generous when it comes to portion size. I also had some of my wife's medium rare prime rib, which was served with the bone. Lucky me! We didn't have them tonight, but they have absolutely phenomenal crabcakes. I haven't had better ones anywhere, including Maryland. My favorite dessert there is their peanut butter and chocolate pie. I passed this time only because I couldn't afford the additional calories. Today is Monday, and I'm still savoring that memorable meal. I feel the same way every time I leave the Progress Grille. The restaurant is a bit on the pricey side (though not by New York City standards). But, trust me, it's worth every penny. read more

If I could give 1.5 stars, I might consider it. This place reminds me of a Vegas lounge from the 70's, and definitely caters to a demographic well acquianted with the flamingo lounge ala the Godfather part II. The space is dark, dense, choppy and gloomy. The wait staff is fine - think roadside diner - and the food is marginal at best: over cooked, over sauced, over everything. Bring the grand parents here if they are waxing nostalgic, but avoid otherwise. read more

Wow talk about a time warp! Take a step right back into the 70's. This is an old school restaurant holding onto the menu and decor of yesteryear. The menu is too big and a little confusing which is not surprising probably hasn't been changed since before the Cold War. All that aside if you can look past the ambiance and the average age of the patrons this is a great place for stiff cocktail and a well cooked steak. Really great cuts of beef and the crab cakes are fresh and large. The apps are a little small but the calamari and steamed clams are well done. I had the bone in rib eye which was massive and cooked really well. The wine list is really lacking but if you are a wine lover you are probably going somewhere else. I would stick with the cocktails. I would definitely go back for the steaks and drinks and just accept the menu and ambiance for what it is. read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but this probably one of the better restaurants in Harrisburg. Formal setting inside. A little bit on the pricey side, but not too bad. I highly recommend the Prime Rib, but most meals are very good. Reservations are a must if you come during busy dinner hours or on a holiday. read more

Food is absolutely amazing! The steak is always done to perfection and you get a huge piece of birthday cake if you tell them it is your birthday. My only complaints with this place include the odd parking and that it is very easy to drive past. Keep your eyes peeled or you will drive right past it. This isn't your typical steak and seafood place. You'll want to be at least a little dressed up to go here. But it is well worth it. This place is NOT fine dining. We were greeted by Tammy. We ordered drink and had 2 orders of clams casino and and an order of mozzarella sticks which were straight from the freezer. We got butter with no bread and asked for it twice in which we never received it. When Tammy finally came to take our order ,my brother and I both ordered the veal parm. Tammy at first said they only have it Monday thru Thurs. which made no sense anyway she didn't tell us that previously. So my mother decided she wanted the check and we were going elsewhere.At which time Tammy asked us of we wanted bread! On our way out we saw someone with Mac n cheese on the table, and my mom asked Tammy why we didn't see the Mac n cheese on the menu and Tammy said that's because its on the new menu. We definitely did not have a good meal here last night. We both ordered steaks. I got the porterhouse and she got the fillet. What I got was a ribeye. When I asked About the cut of meat they suggested I was wrong.t. The filet was possibly the worst looking fillet I've seen. Maybe way from the end of the loin or something. We ordered it medium rare and it came out raw. When we asked to have it re-fired it came out black on the outside and still raw in the center. It was gristley and inedible. The server was very nice and apologetic. This place definitely has not seen "progress" because it's literally right out of 1975. I don't think it's been updated since. Not returning. read more

The drinks are amazing and our server was awesome. The food was not worth the price. The steak wasn't seasoned at all and the daily vegetable was only boiled with no seasoning. I've had and worked in restaurants with much better food. You also walk in to the middle of the dining room, where everyone turns around and looks at you, while the owner sits talking to a table and looks at you like you're stupid. I recognized one of the other servers from coming into restaurants and ordering kids food then complaining the entire time she's there and she works at such a shitty place. I've been a customer here for years, and they consistently deliver great quality. Tonight had Crab Cake and NY Strip combo, Greek Salad, Baked Potato. Absolutely Perfect. Re Crab Cakes, I've not found better anywhere in the country. Awesome food, and a very relaxed ambience. They are the last of the original great Harrisburg restaurants. No more Lombardo's, Santanna's, Inn 22, or Maverick. Progress Grill is all we have left from that era. Go there and enjoy, you won't be disappointed. read more

We had a disappointing experience at the restaurant. Our waiter assured us that the seafood was fresh every day. We had to return our lobster 2 times , it was bland and rubbery. Went here on recommendation of one of our business clients who decided to treat us last night. Arrived around quarter after 9. Our party of 11 was accommodated right away. There are booths and tables plus a full bar. Decor is a little old-fashioned, but, I feel like it just makes it feel more welcoming. Was immediately brought out water and hot, fresh bread & butter. Started out with a Ketel Fire Martini and raw oysters (Blue Points). Both were great. I also sampled some fried calamari which was prepared perfectly and a huge portion as well. My main course was the broiled salmon which came my choice of sides, which, in this case was asparagus and a baked potato. Everything came out great and I needed a doggie bag in the end. I had a bit of somebody's leftover T-bone later in the evening back at the base which was seasoned perfectly and very tender. I would estimate it probably came to about $500-550 overall which isn't too bad considering how many were in our party. Service and food were definitely worth the 20 minute drive from Mechanicsburg. Me and my husband were looking for a nice restaurant on our little weekend excursion. Someone mentioned this place and we went on Saturday night. We were seated almost immediately and our waiter, Nick was very informative and helpful since we hadn't been there before. I was a little hesitant to try the Greek salad but he assured me it was great and he was right! My husband ordered the swordfish and was very satisfied. I ordered the seafood combination platter #2 and let me just tell you, it was the best meal I ever had in my life!!! The crab imperial was to die for and the scallops, shrimp and crab cake were out of this world! We were too full to order dessert (I couldn't even eat my baked potato that came as a side dish)! Disappointed. This is our go to restaurant for special occasions. I ordered a medium filet and crab cake. When I got my filet it was very bloody inside, returned it, came back again and it still was very bloody inside, returned it again, now it came back perfect inside but outside was burnt/crispy. The food was very good. Steak, stuffed flounder, and lobster were good. The onion rings are excellent. Rolls are average, salads are good as well. The main concern I had was they automatically added a 20 percent tip, and we had a party of 5. Server disappeared for long cigarette breaks, and gave up part way through the dinner serving (drink refills, etc). The parking lot is very tight. The exterior needs picked up (trash). The interior nice, but like the exterior needs updated. The flooring has unmarked transitions between rooms (tripping hazards). Overall good experience, except where noted. read more

I've been to PG several tImes over the years and had good meals, but last night was the best! I had the fresh scrod and my friend had crab cakes. Both could not have been better. The Brussels sprouts got cold too fast but that's not PGs fault. The blue cheese dressing on my salad was also good. I'm part Greek and when I saw the menu I was in for a great surprise! The flavor in the shrimp & feta cheese Santorini casserole is amazing (see photo)! This is not a menu regular so if you see it when you go order it! Save a roll for it - to dip. It is not a large dish as you can see but it is so sweet rich and savory. The red sauce and feta cheese is delicious in the dish. I've only tased sauce something like this at one other restaurant which was a Greek and Italian joint. If you get a side option order the Greek Salad. It is one of the best I've tried. The other side option that is tasty is the green beans which have a delicious sauce on them. Not just your typical green been side so it is worth it. On a side note they have sweet Lambrusco red wine which I love, for dessert baklava, and not to mention every fish imaginable! They have scrod which is a favorite of mine I can't always find. The calamari was excellent as an appetizer. I don't want to rehash everything that's already been stated by other lower star reviews. It's all true and notable. Top of the list being HUGELY OVERPRICED. My husband and I got two sodas each before they told us they were not free refills. $7. Really? Why can my local diner afford free refills but this place can't?!?! Why did I pay what I pay for FOURTEEN liters of soda at the store?!?! They just LOVE their light and delicate sauces. But the reason they love them is because they use WATER to thin them out instead of using more alcohol which would be more worth your money and would reduce the sauce to something decadent instead if WATERY. One person in our group ordered the rack of lamb. He must have gotten the rack from the anorexic/bulimic lamb because it was MISSING the entire meaty back part which is the reason to eat such a dish. He ended up looking like he was sucking on boney drumsticks instead. Someone got the creme brûlée for dessert and I was commenting to my husband that they couldn't be real creme brûlée. They are in GLASS dishes! You have to make the custard in a hot water bath and if you did that in glass it would be all stained from the water marks as the water evaporates. Also, the shape was a flattened kind which would not bake the custard evenly; it would be too cooked on the edged or undercooked in the center. Just as I was commenting to him, she says the top is REALLY hard. I look at back at my husband, knowing look on my face. The custard base is supposed to be eggs, milk and sugar. They probably used something out of a box, no doubt with corn sugar, which gets too hard when they torch it! If it were real creme brûlée that you happened to torch too long, you'd burn the top but it would always be the same crispness, not hard. I gave them an extra star because of cleanliness. This is the only area where the place excels. Save your money and pick another place that's working harder for your money. There's nothing special here. read more

I usually do not like buffets. Being from New York City I am kind of particular about buffets because usually I find that the food is often old or cold. This place really amazed me, I did happen to pick one or two things that were cold but definitely not old. The fried shrimp were crispy and warm, Pork fried rice was very moist And they even had barbecue roast pork loin, And because it was so thick it was a little cold But because it taste so good I actually ate it and was satisfied. The only thing lacking here was the desert line up. For instance there were only two selections of cake, But maybe about eight selections of dried cookies. I used to come here with my parents and grandparents 20+ years ago for special occasions, but haven't been since. I remembered it as being a place with great food and a very "mature" clientele. I went back last night and literally nothing has changed. Nothing. The decor is exactly the same, and the food is still outstanding. Also, the restaurant was pretty much cleared out by 9 pm (haha). Killer steaks! This place is unchanged in 30 years. The food was excellent back then and it's just as good now. I hadn't been back to the Progress Grill in at least 15 years but it won't be that long between visits again. The decor and menu are definitely dated, but great food, cocktails and service are timeless. I had the Kansas City ribeye. It was huge, perfectly cooked and delicious.
