I couldn't believe there was a brewery so close to home, let alone such an awesome brewery as this one! The place is spacious with a decent amount of parking. Also DOG FRIENDLY! I had to text to ask if they were pet friendly which was different, but regardless we got an answer within 15 minutes and showed up with our XXL Dane. Walking in, there was already a dog seated on the "inside" so we were more comfortable hanging out indoors...My pooch is pretty sensitive to the weather and cold and it was quite windy that day. They have a great variety of beers to choose from along with snacks..we got lucky the elotero man passed by and picked up/brought in a few things with no complaints from the staff. For the beer, our favorites were the Lord Byron, Eduardo and the Calvary...two of these beers I didn't realize would easily knock you on your ass if you don't peep the alc. content, lol! Staff was super friendly and made sure we were always accommodated whether it be clearing the table or suggesting drinks. On a shelf they have a number of games available. They also had the Dodger game on too, which is what we had originally gone out to look for! Such a great overall experience, I had such a rad time there. Will be back soon! read more

This is how a brewery should be done! I heard about this place a long time ago, when they were called Federal Brewery and the tasting room was as big as a bathroom. I've always wanted to come back then but the small cramped tasting room kept me away. Since then, they've changed quite a bit and for the better (but between me and you, I thought the Federal name was cooler, but hey legal reasons). [Pros] - Great drinking space - Great beers! In the beginning, you learned about what went into making the beer and the flavors and aromas that came to life. Not to mention, the beers had names taken from Spaghetti Westerns, and am not sure that is the case today. Speaking of learning about the beers, I asked one of the bartenders about the beer and they could not tell me a lick about it. Been to many breweries from Stone in San Diego to Firestone in San Luis Obispo, Dale Bros when it was Dale Bros and a bunch others, this little spot in my old stomping grounds is one of few breweries in the San Gabriel Valley, we need more breweries here that's for sure , great beer, great people and prices below the market average. I love this place and I wish many successes and collaborations with some of the known greats of craft beer, the local eateries need to recognize this up and coming brewer and use it to their advantage, local pairings would be great. I could have sworn I had written a review, but I realize why I never did. I was excited to have a microbrewery five minutes from home that no one knew about. I wanted it all to myself! I remember it as Federal Brewing but witnessed it literally progress into Progress Brewing. I absolutely love being greeted by my name by Kevin and Diego while sharing a few laughs about whatever is going on that day. They're ex-chemist who built everything from scratch and rolled the dice on their craft. They put their all into this brewery and probably spent a few months on a taco bell diet. Their beers are classic recipes without outrageous ingredients plus high abv. The boys love talking about their beer, their future plans, and try their best to accommodate how quickly they've gained popularity. Seriously, I'm not even a fan of imperial stouts but my goodness, the Fat Henry had me buzzing and making me feel like I could rule an empire. But, it was love at first taste with the Wolverine; it will always hold a dear place in my heart with it's crisp and creamy taste. Long gone are the days when it was a few folks at the bar. Now you'll be lucky to find a spot to stand. Federal is one of two breweries to open within days of each other in the SGV. The two breweries, at least for now, represent a the yin and yang of brewing. While Pacific Plate in Monrovia is using unusual ingredients to produce unique flavors, Federal is using classic ingredients and techniques to produce beers that are well made, approachable, and recognizable. The two fellows who own the brewery, Kevin and Diego, are friendly and enjoy talking about their craft, philosophy, and future plans. The beer is going to rotate a bit, so I won't focus too much on any one. I liked the Blond Ale very much, clean, dry and crisp. The other that stood out was a Red Ale, the hoppiest offering, with some malty sweetness to balance things. Tasters, pints, grumblers, and growlers are available. Prices are just right. The tasting room is located in an industrial area of South El Monte, and housed in an old building that may have been an auto shop at one time. Small Parking lot, but there's plenty of street parking. Bar stools and picnic tables make up the seating areas, and there are plans for a TV. Here's a tip for cyclists: Both Federal and Pacific Plate are not far off the Rio Hondo Bike path. You can make a nice 16 mile round trip between the two and have a pleasant beer tasting experience. read more

I was surprised that there would be a brewery in SEM, so I had to try it out. The set-up inside is the one of a brewery tasting room (awesome with blackboards and taps). Service was quick and the bartenders were extremely nice. However, they do need some more education, as when asked simple beer questions they would call the brewers to answer them. That is one great thing! Both owners/brewers are behind the bar and great to educate the patrons about their beer and business. Prices are also amazing!!! I have been to many breweries, some good and some bad, and this is by far the best pricing I have seen for take home growlers. The beer is also amazing!! I loved the Wolverine and Calvary. We were on our way to a kid's birthday party and didn't want to show up empty-handed. I told the bf, "Hey, I read there's a new craft brewery in South El Monte and we can buy a growler for the party." I'm sure he realized that it's not exactly a kid-friendly gift but I certainly got his attention with the idea of beer. Honestly, the location seems a bit odd. I agree that LA really needs more craft breweries but who would've thought South El Monte is a good place to set one up? According to co-owner Kevin, although they scouted locations all over Greater LA, the City of South El Monte showed the most support and interest in helping a startup microbrewery. When we visited, they had 4 beers on tap but they are about to add a fifth one very soon. We sampled each one and were very impressed by the overall flavor and quality. The beers reminded me of many of the breweries we've visited in Seattle and Portland. We settled on a growler of the Rio Bravo for $10 and brought it to the party. The adults at the party were shocked to find out that there's a hidden gem just down the street and all agreed that the beer tasted excellent. read more

The venue is set up really well and it is great place to hang out. They have TV's for sports and the staff is very attentive and friendly. The only thing I didn't like was their IPA beers. IPAs are my favorite and this place wasn't the place for that. With that being said. They had plenty of other beer choices that I found very tasty! read more

I really enjoy Federal Brewing for many reasons but the main reason besides the great beer is the great interaction with owners Dr. Diego and Kevin. They are very knowledgeable and really take time to talk to everybody about their craft. I've tried all their brews so far and loved each of them. The Guera was nice and light. The wolverine amber was very tasty. My favorite was the Pioneer red which had a nice kick of flavors and not to heavy. The rio bravo was also good. Not your typical wheat beer. It wasn't overwhelming which is good. Overall the Federal experiences have been positive. Keep up the good work guys. I love having something different and new in the neighborhood. This place is great! The beer is yummy, the prices are good for craft beer and there was good ambiance. There were many table and card games to help make it a fun evening. The location is amazing too since it's the only brewery near Montebello, which is where I spend a lot of time visiting my parents and I usually need a drink after that! Since it was my first time there I ordered a flight of all their beers. My favorites were the double IPA and the Porter. The other beers were good and I see a lot of potential with future brews. It's super bright inside as I'd prefer it to be in a more dim setting. It was also incredibly crowded and I'm awkwardly standing in he middle of the room with a pint of beer in my hand. They do have a lot of board games, but that's if you can even snag a seat here. Also, it's smart of a food truck to park right outside of this place, so that's nice when you get the munchies.
