started with boot camp to get back into consistent schedule with workouts in the summer .... swim wear ready :) then personal training with Shon to prepare me for returning to weightlifting. Awesome low-impact but intense workouts to really make you sweat each session. I tried ProAction Athletics for the first time this weekend with a sub teacher and I left drenched. What I really liked about ProAction is that the instructor took the time to understand any injuries people in the class had and made sure to give modifications for each exercise as we progressed in the class. The Sunday 10AM class only had 4 people in it so it didn't feel packed at all and we had plenty of space to do ropes, burpees, and even laps around the room itself. The 60 min class is a mix of circuit training with a 10 min warmup, circuits to run through 2x, super sets, running outside, and a nice cool down stretch to end the class. The class had upbeat music, nice variety of exercises, and allowed each person to go through the circuits at their own pace. If you're itching to try out new classes at new studios, ProAction is a great choice. Be careful that you don't miss the studio because they only have a small sign to indicate their location! read more

Girl crush on trainer Marie. She's upbeat, she's helpful, she's quirky, funny and gives me one helluva workout! This is pretty much circuit training. You have different stations and you do each station. Stations consist of abs, bands, TRX, pull ups, burpee's and so on. Most classes end with some running outside. I'm usually at the weekday morning classes and there are about 3-6 other ladies there. Not a lot of hand holding unless you ask for it (which I do as I'm all about form). Solid music, solid, but bare bones space - no showers or such, but it works. I read more

I'm approaching my 1 year anniversary of classes at ProAction Athletics - and Sarah and Heather have been awesome, super supportive and encouraging. I have really been able to get back in the groove in establishing a regular fitness regimen with the classes - plus going to the gym after for additional hour of cardio, working in dumbbell and body weight workouts at home and getting back into my swimming. My agility has improved so much from these classes that I think I overestimate myself and have tripped myself up a few times, but everything I have learned from class allows me to continue working out around any injuries I have given myself from being a klutz. I've been enjoying hiking and backpacking more than ever this summer - a 25 mile hike in 96 degree weather is now "no big deal" for me and I even hiked up Half Dome with a sprained ankle (if only to answer the question "What else could happen if it is ok with weight bearing?" - answer: resprain it!). The proof is in the pudding - I may be working out more than the average bootcamp attendee does -- apart from bootcamp, I also go do cardio at the gym, plus dumbbell workouts, ZWOW/bodyrock.tv style workouts, swimming, hiking and tons of walking -- but the proof is in the pudding. Shon was so disrespectful and condescending when I asked for clarification on a workout. She does her own workout the entire class and does not correct form or offer advice. I love a boot camp class and have been doing them at various places for years and after going back 4/5 times, I decided that Shon's class was just too unpleasant to go back. I attended two of my three first classes with Shon and never went back for the third. During the entire class, she was either ignoring us on her phone, or loudly publicly humiliating us (ok, me) for not knowing the exercises despite her lack of instruction. She would look up from her phone, point to the white board, bark the name of an exercise and that was it. If you're in the wrong place or doing it wrong, she will call you out in front of the whole class. The thing is: I came here from years and years of boot camp. I'm not a newbie. I know these exercises, just not the exact way or place she wants them done. What happens if someone is starting from zero? I left in literal tears and haven't been back despite this being an ideal class, location, and schedule. read more

Amazing trainers who flex to meet you where you are (and then push you to where you could be) and a great community of people who love it as much as I do. In the last year I have tried 6 different gyms trying to find the right fit for me. Context I am a plus sized queer femme latina, most gyms make me cringe. I tried ProAction because Lindsey used to train at my other gym and I love her style! She's motivating and pushes you because she knows you and your needs. So yay Lindsey! That said, ProAction was not for me- mainly because the female environment was not the kind of place where women cheered each other on, it was clicky and felt awkwardly like junior high. It was frustrating to hear the women constantly talking about how fat they were (because they were now a size 4 instead of a 2) or their cellulite. Coming from a gym culture where people cheered for each other and body shaming (regardless of your size) was not the norm and the fact that an emphasis was placed on your strength not your size, this gym culture was odd and disconcerting to me- so I left. i gave it a good 3 months try, which is longer than I gave other places, because I liked the trainers but overall the other clients were just not my cup of tea read more

It's SO Oakland, and I love it. There are a variety of times to choose from, which is helpful when life gets chaotic. There's a bathroom so you can change after you get there, but there's only room for one, and most ladies arrive ready to sweat. The boot camps are all female and provides a supportive and competitive place to work out. You'll see everything from the girls wearing their matching lulumon outfits wearing $30grand rings. And you'll see the girl wearing a Hanes wife beater with capris from costco. Tatoos peek out from many of the ladies here, who come in all colors of the rainbow, shapes and sizes. If you're new to working out, give her a call and make sure you start at the beginning of a session. These workouts leave you comfortably sore, but not unable to walk. read more

I just started my second month of bootcamp. Yay! The first month I lost 10lbs and hope to lose to 10+lbs this month. Remember you can't just lose the weight from just exercising, you also have to change your eating habit. The first week of bootcamp is always the hardest because you are just so sore all over. Just keep going everyday and your body will adjust to the workouts. This bootcamp is intense. Sarah will push you for one whole hour. She is very helpful when you need help or will also show you the right way to do the exercise. You will see your body lose inches around the waist and get stronger. I went everyday from Monday-Friday at 6am in the morning and I'm still doing it. I love working out first thing before I go to work because I have so much energy for the rest of the day. If you want a great workout, I suggest doing her $15 week to see if you want to sign up. there are all types of woman at different levels. So don't be afraid if you are not fit because I'm not fit, but I'm working at it at ProAction. read more

Hey there! I've tried some of the best/hardest bootcamps in the East Bay - Pacific Ring Sports, Namaste Fit Club & Personal Training, The Inner Athlete, Relic Tree - and this one is the best. I hate to tell you that because then you'll fill up my 5am class even more than it is already - but it's the truth. I had different reasons for leaving them that aren't worth going into but my frequent complaint was too full classes or they had horrible class times - 4:30pm in the afternoon? Closed on Sundays? Really? WTF, are you trying to run a business that is convenient for you or your customers? Sarah teaches most the classes I attend, Shon is great too and there's one on the weekends that is lovely as well. Sarah's energy and willingness to cheer me on by name makes a big difference to me. Class starts on time, is super challenging - and I go pretty hard if I do say so myself :) and it flows well. This is an important skill that not every bootcamp instructor has - the exercises need to work well together and make sense. Though Sarah sometimes has so many different activities my head spins as I'm trying to maintain : P Good side of that is that if you hate one thing you're on to the next one in a minute - and you don't get bored. She doesn't do long rests in between sets which I appreciate because I tend to bounce off the walls once I get there and I'm ready to go. I don't socialize much while I'm there - frankly because I'm typically trying to keep breathing or not throw up - but the energy is great and no one yells at you to get out of "their" spot (happened to me at Namaste Fitness). It's mostly women and men who are 10 to 15 years younger than me, so the intensity level is good for me - the few ones my age and older are bringing it hard, so I have no excuses there either. I'm 44 this year, about 8 pounds over where I want to be and have 2 fucked up knees, Sarah knows I go hard and keeps me focused but gives me every consideration for my knees. I need that because if a trainer pushes me to do stuff I shouldn't, I will try my best to - and suffer the rest of the week. Also, word to the other bootcamps out there - these classes are AFFORDABLE, the options on the schedule are GREAT - 5am classes on week days and classes on Saturday and SUNDAY! You all should take notes, Sarah's doing it right, watch and learn. read more

I just joined here after trying out the $15 trial week. I already feel the need to rave about it! I have been searching the area for a motivating place to workout with nice people. After cycling through several gyms, I knew immediately after my first class at ProAction, I found it! Everyone is so nice and encouraging! So far I have only taken classes with Sarah and Heather but they are both fantastic! I like that they are both always smiling and clearly love their job. It's very motivating. I also love that it is only women and that everyone works at their own level/pace. You don't have to feel bad if you can't do something or need a break. There are always options for substituting if you have injuries or can't do a movement. Believe it or not, the hour flies by! Also, there are plenty of class times to fit any busy schedule. I like that I can schedule my classes online. It helps me plan my week and feel more committed to going. I'm so glad I finally decided to give it a try. You should too! wow, sarah is a great bootcamp instructor! for the month i signed up for, i was worked! HARD. i went 3 times a week, which was about all my schedule allowed, but honestly, i think one of those workouts = 2 of my regular workouts. i loved that each class was varied - helped keep things interesting - and that every class had no more than a dozen or so people. i think it gave everyone a chance to have some personal attention. the only drawback was that bootcamp is a little pricey for me. i have no doubt that its worth the $150ish a month, but it's a little hard to manage that regularly on a nonprofit salary. perhaps, sometime in the future... or when there is another $15/week! read more

I am going on week 9 of Boot Camp and I am definitely planning on 9 more. To be clear, I was in horrible shape going in...and the Living Social voucher I used for the first month got me in the door...but with knees a-knocking and a lot of anxiety. Working out to your maximum potential is hard! No two ways about it. And after the first couple of days, I literally could barely walk. Thankfully that does not last... and the progress is real and fast enough that you will surprise yourself. No matter what shape you are in, Sarah is above all non-judgmental and always encouraging. So as long as you do your personal individual best, there is no way you are not going to get a balls to the wall, all-out workout. There are light weights, stairs, hills, running, jump ropes, core work, TRX straps, resistance bands, and pushups galore... just to start. There are always alternate versions of exercises based on your level or injuries...a good thing for my sorry knees. It is never boring and you bond with the other women who come in all ages, colors, sizes and fitness levels. I am in no way a morning person yet I get up at 5:50am every day (!) now just to get this amazing work out in. At 8:00am when I walk out, I am in a fantastic mood, ready to tackle the day. Be brave! You are worth it! And it does get fun. Promise. read more

After going here for almost a full year, I have to say this is probably one of the best work out experiences I have ever had. Let me explain.... Going to a gym in general can be intimidating (especially by yourself) but then add that you are going to classes here, and you can't hide on a treadmill by yourself with your headphones on, and that the work out promises to be challenging - you could find a lot of reasons to not go to begin with, or at least continue going, but if you have ever tried this place, I promise you, you will continue to go and LOVE IT!! Sarah, the owner and main bootcamp trainer is awesome! Full of energy, friendly, funny, absolutely tough, but always in an encouraging and upbeat way, while also maintaining attention to everyone's form and technique. That leadership continues throughout the entire place. I have never had one bad instructor at this place, all of the women are awesome, (Shon, Heather, Lauren, Siriji, and Katie) and although sometimes the workouts vary, they each deliver a kick butt workout with support, training, positivity and encouragement. I kid you not, anyone, at any athletic level can truly enjoy the workouts here, and not only get their butt kicked, but have fun while its happening. From bootcamp, to TRX, to Kettlebell, I have tried all of the classes here, and I promise you - you will have a challenging workout that is also fun. A year later, I am still here, stronger, faster, leaner, with more friends (that I made here) and happier than I was before. TRY IT! read more

ProAction Athletics is my favorite thing about the Bay! I moved here in January of 2016 and immediately started checking out gyms with ClassPass. I realized that I wanted to spend more than three classes a month at ProAction and ditched ClassPass for a pack of bootcamp classes. Sarah runs the place like a well-oiled machine and all the trainers that work with her are knowledgeable, fun, and fitness goals! The music pumps me up and the routines are always different. I've been coming here for 2.5 years and it's about time I wrote a review! The women working out here aren't competitive with each other. Instead, everyone looks to each other as motivation to work harder. I love the fact that it's all women, when I first joined, I didn't think it would make a difference but it instantly made me feel more comfortable to work out. I tried going to another bootcamp but it didn't compare to the encouragement, welcoming environment at ProAction. Because of Sarah and the other great instructors, I've essentially become addicted to working out. I MISS bootcamp, Sarah and the other ladies when I haven't gone in a few days. It also doesn't hurt that it's easy to make new friends at this place. With each new 4 week session, I find a goal to work on. When I'm having a harder time staying focused, that goal keeps me fired up. Even if I'm super tired, it's hard to not give it your all at bootcamp. I may have been thinner in high school but I've never been as FIT as I am now. And in combination with Weight Watchers, I've become more toned. During this past winter break, I found that while I still get a good workout at the exercise classes at the gym, they don't exhaust me compared to the muscle building and cardio workout you get at ProAction. I've come to like running out of breath. Is that weird? :p It's a good size studio and there's TRX included on Friday evenings. Friday mornings are cardio days which set you up nicely for the weekend. Sarah is the best. She really invests herself into your well being and makes sure that you do everything with safety and effort. read more

This is my second week going to ProAction Athletics Boot Camp and I really love it! Sarah is such an amazing instructor, she really pushes you to do your best and to never give up. It is always great to have that extra voice of motivation! The workouts change everyday, which I really enjoy because it allows your body to always feel something different. It is mainly a cardio workout, but there is always weight training added in, which is something I consider necessary to any work out. I already see changes in my body! Sarah's bootcamp is really what she says it is- fun, varied, and results producing! I've definitely had my eyes peeled on the different boot camps offered around the lake, and it was hard to know where to begin. I'm thankful for Sarah's warm and knowledgeable style- no need to go elsewhere. She will work you out and keep you motivated, and is very easy to connect with. As a boot camp instructor, the pacing of the group is quick, but she's super conscientious about making sure we recover before beginning the next set of workouts. There's a lot of creativity in how Sarah not only creates each individual session, but the sessions as it flows through the week, which is one thing that helps keep me really motivated! In addition to the variety, Sarah pays attention to everyone's form- she will come help correct posture to make sure we get the best out of each exercise. How great is that?! After a 2 year hiatus, I'm back and ProAction is as awesome as ever. I did the $20 week this past week (after being a couch potato after a couple injuries) and let me tell you...I already feel stronger and have more energy then I thought I would. Sarah is awesome and it was really cool that she even recognized me, although I never took a class with her (she was always teaching the class before mine when I was here last.) I second all the raves about her. Today, I took Lindsey's strength and conditioning class and it was fantastic. Boot camp style but much more focused on weights and strength. I started coming to this bootcamp a little over a month and a half ago, lured by a great livingsocial deal. I have exercised on/off all my life and have usually hated it, but have done it because it was good for me and I was always glad I did it afterward. I had never done a bootcamp and didn't know what to expect. In addition, I have knee issues and was afraid that I wouldn't last long. However, ProAction has been great. It is indoor (I don't need strangers watch me nearly pass out!) and Sarah is great - warm, fun, supportive, encouraging, funny....you name it! She paid attention to my limitations and was great about suggesting low impact versions of the moves, and adjusting my form. I love that it is an all women's place and feel totally comfortable with the other women. There is no vanity, these women are in all shapes/sizes and are here to sweat and work hard (and are friendly and supportive, as well). I like the variety of exercises (Sarah always changes it up) and while I still don't love getting up early and going, I am always glad to be there and really happy when I am done! It is a REAL workout, nothing frou-frou about it - you will huff and puff and sweat. So, I have been consistently coming twice a week now and just bought a new 10 punch card package, which is still a good deal at $12.50/class (better than the $25/class I was paying when I did pilates, and I am getting a better workout!). Some people come every day, but my knees wouldn't like that, and I like to walk during the other days, so this is perfect for me. However, if you want to come 5x/week, you can do that, too (at a reasonable price). I highly recommend ProAction and Sarah! read more

I have a couple of friends that have been going to Sarah's bootcamp for a few months so I thought I would go check it out for myself. I went to the free week which I thought is a great way to come and try out because you dont have to make a full commitment until your ready. The workout area is right next to Lake Merritt which I thought was refreshing to be outdoors and not inside a stuffy gym. Everyday Sarah switches up the workout routine which is great so you dont know what to expect day to day. Also that way you are working out every part of your body! Sarah is a wonderful instructor! The work outs are hard but she keeps you modivated and going till the end of the workout hour. She pushes everyone but also makes sure that each individual is ok understanding that everyone has to go at their own pace. Go Sarah! This boot camp is awesome!!! read more

I've never been one to stick to any sort of exercise plan, heck, who am I kidding, I never exercised. The concept of boot camp was terrifying to me, but I figured if I was going to do this I might as well do it right. Much to my delight, there was nothing to be afraid of, Sarah is great! Did I feel like I was going to die for the first 4 classes? Of course! But it gets easier. There's no judgment at ProAction, you take your time and go at your own pace while still getting a great work out. Sarah is super motivating and corrects your form (which always makes the exercise more of a challenge, imagine that!). It's a different workout everyday, so it never gets boring. After about 4 months of boot camp I lost almost 10 lbs, 5 inches and 3% body fat. You know how I know that? Sarah does body assessments for her clients, too. She does it all. bonus stuff: ProAction has an indoor space, so if you're a cold weather/rain/soggy grass wimp like me, this is rad. every 5th week is $15 week, you can work out as much as you want for the week for only 15 bucks! read more

ProAction Athletics is the cheese to my macaroni. Sarah keeps it fun with a great combination of cardio and weight work, and mixes it up every day so the routine never gets boring. I was sure I wasn't cut out for hard-core training, but Sarah is very encouraging and the women are of all different levels so I feel comfortable going at my own pace. Make no mistake: This camp is very challenging, but Sarah is careful to emphasize proper form and safety, offering low-impact alternatives and other modifications so that each class meets your personal fitness needs. Every Friday we hit the stairs for some serious cardio, and its a great measure of progress: you build strength and confidence pretty fast. Actually, one of the best things about boot camp is the boost in confidence that comes from pushing yourself past your comfort level and succeeding. Being called a rock star by Sarah doesn't hurt, either! The women who attend are really awesome, too - no attitude or pretension here, just great ladies who like to sweat (and, ok, maybe also occasionally curse a particularly difficult drill). If "boot camp" seems intimidating, come to one of Sarah's $15 weeks or $5 Saturdays to get a feel for the class. But a warning: it can be addictive. read more

I am a life-long athlete and massage therapist and I love this woman-owned business! I have enjoyed boot camp and TRX classes here. The trainers are very enthusiastic, supportive and professional. I love Sarah's boot camp style..she creates a hard work out for all levels and includes team-building sometimes, which cultivates a nice, friendly environment. All the folks that train here are warm and welcoming. Oh! Also, the space is very clean and organized - which not all gyms are, as you may know. I did my first workout at ProAction Athletics today and am super sore but so glad I did it. I got my buns up at 5am for the coed boot camp taught by Sarah. For some reason I just want to do the things she tells me to do. The workout was varied and creative and challenging. The class members fed off of her encouragements and there was no negativity to be felt anywhere... Just people up early wanting to sweat. Thanks so much! read more
