I can not say enough good things about Mark Sutro and his teaching and coaching abilities. I was visiting from San Diego and took Mark's cycle class and I enjoyed it so much that I stayed for his rowing class. It was my first time doing a rowing class and Mark was so helpful and continued to help correct my form and guide me in the right direction through the class. His music is excellent! A great blend of classics and current hits, all high energy and making you want to move! The facility is clean and well maintained and if I lived in the area I would definitely join. They have a wide range of classes for every interest and skill level and a full schedule throughout the week. I have been rowing at CRUfit since January 2024. I'm in my 50's and I've never been in the habit of going to the gym. On this Thanksgiving day, Mark had a holiday rowing class in the morning. I like all of the rowing instructors and community that come out to support each other every day. I just tried a cycling class for the second time. In the new year, I intend to try some of the other classes that focus on building strength. Over the past year, I have gotten stronger and feel better in general. Throughout my life, I tried joining a gym. But I was never comfortable and never stayed for long until now. I have to confess that I felt self-conscious from the quiet judgment from my peers and my instructors. CRUfit is a very different environment. There's no judgment, no shame and utter freedom for beginners to look absolutely ridiculous. The instructors are helpful without rigidity. The members generally encourage each other and put each other at ease. If you're not sure, then sign up a free rowing class on Monday mornings with Ted, and you understand where I'm coming from. Rowing is a low-impact full-body workout. The final equation by the end of the day is we're all living longer. What a great place to get a great workout for all types of paces! If you haven't trekked out to this Montclair Village gem then I would add it to your list quick! My BF and I came here for a TRX/Kettlebell class and it was great! The instructor made sure to explain all the circuits as we did it and walked around to make sure everyone had proper form and altered modification if asked. The class really focused on isolating various muscles without being too intense. We did around 4 various circuits 4x each with 10 seconds in between the first 2 sets and then 5 seconds between the last 2. With the music pumping in the background the 1-hr class went by so quickly! PROS: + Friendly service! Most of the staff knew people by first names - always a good sign. + Free lockers w/locks + Free towel rentals + Free mats for classes + Attentive instructor w/upbeat music + Clean and open establishment + They also have a variety of classes such as cycling, rowing, weights, etc. They have pretty solid membership packages that are based on credits (most were 2-4) CONS: + The only con would be parking around the area. It wasn't too bad before our 6:30PM class but I can imagine it being tough earlier in the day read more

This review is for Dante's kettlebell and TRX classes. I always get a great workout and feel pretty sore the next day or two. You can push yourself as much as you want, but being in a class definitely makes me try harder (I tend to slack off if I work out myself at home). Dante walks around making suggestions and corrections. He is very nice person overall as well and makes you feel welcome and comfortable in class. Sometimes the classes do get crowded but I'm always able to sign up for a spot. read more

Holy cow, how was CRUfit in my backyard and I didn't know it. Great facility, all of the staff were very nice and friendly. I took the TRX intro class and it kicked my you know what (my legs felt like wet noodles). I never felt like the trainer was impatient just helpful. I spoke with a woman who was returning after taking the rowing class and she highly recommended that class as well. I also love that you can sign up for the classes on line so you have a guaranteed spot and they have a really good web presence. Try it, right now they are offering the first class you sign up for free, or don't and then I can have this club all to myself! I will back for rowing and spinning and more TRX if I ever recover. read more

I really love CRUfit. I am pretty picky about my workouts and every studio has a different vibe, but CRUfit fits my personality perfectly. I currently have Classpass, but CRUfit is my favorite and I may ditch Classpass and sign up for a membership at CF. I am a cyclist and when in doubt I can always get excited enough to go to a spin class. This is the ONLY place where the class seems to be taught by someone who is actually a cyclist and pushes you like the athlete you might be. You won't have crappy pop music or random useless gyrations with 3lb weights. The two spin classes I went to were intervals, pedaling and realistic scenarios of climbing with cadence suggestions which is really helpful for me instead of randomly shouting out to turn the resistance up and up. I also love that they have performance metrics available for you during the class and then email them to you after. The other half of what CRUfit does is rowing. I have taken maybe 5 rowing classes and it is always heavily geared toward technique and there is plenty of rest time. I personally don't feel like the rowing classes are a monstrous workout, but it's fun and I am probably not pushing hard enough. There are also a lot of really nice regulars who will help you out and it's fun when you have a whole room full of folks rowing in unison. I like to close my eyes and row by noise. I also like that they have later classes around 7:30, do gym wide events and their showers are nice. If you plan your day right you can also spend some time in the sauna, though I never have because I always choose the late classes. They are also very accommodating, I rode my bike in once and they let me hide it in the back, they waited for a lady who signed up for a class and was a few minutes late and Mark was willing to hang out a little late after class so I could use the sauna. read more

The best indoor cycling training facility geared towards outdoor cyclists! The workouts are truly challenging yet you set your level to train at your own specific level. The owners are lovely and so are the other trainers leading the classes. My fav classes are Saturday at 9:15 and Sunday at 8:30. This is a wonderful place for group classes, with highly motivating instructors and a welcoming feel. My favorite is indoor rowing, which is a great workout for all levels. There's a lot of emphasis on proper technique and well-planned workouts that have really helped me improve my overall fitness. I also love the other classes for improving strength and flexibility especially Functional Movement with Dante. Right now, while we are sheltering-in-place, they are offering online classes over Zoom, which is great for maintaining a bit of that feeling of normal life. Check them out! read more

M-Power is their 6 week program for women. You won't find a more supportive & encouraging group! They worked with my fitness level and guided me with nutrition, stress and sleep management. As others have commented, CRUfit is wonderful. Mark and Mia are passionate and it shows: in the classes which are all great, in the state of the art equipment, in the friendly front desk, the clean bathrooms, the smiling faces, etc. I've been attending the cycle classes for years mostly to maintain my fitness -- I'm not training for anything in particular. I always leave feeling spent, which is the exact feeling I'm looking for. I love the technology and being able to benchmark my performance on the bikes. I know during class how I'm doing relative to my norm, and I can see my personal stats and charts from the first time I started on the CRUfit website. Even though the classes are filled with riders at all levels, by having an individual performance benchmark I'm really always riding against myself which keeps me motivated no matter who else is in the class. The instructors are excellent and in all cases friendly and helpful. The bikes can take some getting used to and the first few classes can feel a bit daunting, but it's worth the effort and commitment. Finally, as others have noted, this is really a community place and it's fantastic to have such an outstanding operation in Montclair. read more

Love working out at Crufit! It's a class-based gym which is perfect for me since I am not self motivated for working out. If I sign up for a class, I can get there but just going to a gym and working out on equipment does not work for me. One of the best things about this club is the classes have set number of participants so the classes aren't overcrowded like most of the gyms tend to be. I can pre register for the classes and show up without having to elbow for a space. Yay! The pricing seems consistent with other gyms, maybe a bit cheaper, especially when you buy the package deals. My absolute favorite is the group rowing. If you have not done it before, be warned: it is addictive! It's a terrific workout, engaging your entire body and also insanely fun. Everyone rows together, so you get a group feeling that one does not normally get when working out at the gym and the workout just flies by. All the instructors are world class and there is a wide variety of folks from little old ladies to intense athletes. I am also a huge fan of any class that Dante leads; he has such kind and friendly energy. The workouts are terrific. I love how straightforward his style is, not depending too much on complicated equipment, just a good solid workout. Tinu's classes are also a favorite. Seriously, all the instructors are awesome, I have not taken every class, but hear great reviews from folks who have. My wife and I started training with Mark at ClubOne in downtown Oakland. once we heard that he and Mia were starting their own spin/row center in Montclair we cancelled our ClubOne membership. Here's what makes CRUFit special--my wife and I go for fitness and quite honestly, she goes to get fit but also to look good for a woman her age (50+). I really like this club. I know that there are some people who like to walk into a gym, plan and modify their own workouts in detail, and stay motivated for years. That's not me. And I also see people who seem to always be working out with a personal trainer at their side saying, "gimme five more!" While that might be cool, that gets very expensive. CRUFit seems to be geared between those extremes, with group exercise programs in spinning, rowing, and TRX (perhaps more) taught by instructors who are truly fitness professionals, in a clean new facility with a neighborhood feel and easy parking. They seem to take a personal interest in developing programs for people to help them achieve specific goals, with one-on-one attention in a group setting. The club is new, but I expect it will be around for a long time. read more

CRUfit is AWESOME!! I have been going for the past few months very regularly - I take the spin classes with Mia - her classes are structured in a way that you leave knowing you not only got a great workout but you are building strength and stamina. The spin studio is fantastic, top of the line bikes and software - there are large screens that show you how hard you are working and where you are in comparison to the rest of the class (I'm a bit competitive so that is great, helps me push even harder). The training is highly customized to your level - regardless if it's your first spin class or you 100th you get a workout tailored to your ability level. Your stats from the class are e-mailed to you after so you can keep track of your progress. Mark Sutro teaches the rowing class I take - he is a great trainer, and the group of regulars that attend help make the class even more fun. I'm a has-been college rower and this was my first dive back into an erg workout since then - dare I say I have enjoyed it?!?! The classes are great, the facility is clean, well kept and top of the line - but the people there make it great - from Jen at the front desk who knows everyone's name to the class instructors - it is a great place to workout. Another plus is they offer childcare and they are right across from the Montclair Egg Shop - sweat through a class on Sat morning then reward yourself with a delish breakfast to kick off your weekend!! :) Can't say enough good stuff about CRUfit!! read more

Everything I said in my first review is still true AND CRUfit has been incredibly safe, innovative and accessible during this time. There are many virtual classes that you can take -- when you register you get access to the livestream and a recording, in case you need to do it later. Some classes are held, safely, at a convenient outdoor location -- and those also are accessible through virtual or recorded modes. It has been possible to continue a high level of safe engagement with favorite capable trainers -- and stay in touch with people in class. He has a wealth of knowledge about fitness, which he has acquired through years of experience, including collegiate rowing at UC Berkeley and has running a fitness training group for years. This gym provides the perfect blend between personal and team training. It has been great to have a convenient, clean gym with great equipment that also builds a sense of community. The trainers are friendly, patient and knowledgable and embrace all levels of fitness - while still pushing you to do your best and improve with time. Individual classes are a little pricey, but higher volume packages are competitive and well worth the money. I'm an ex- collegiate athlete, who let years of work as a young professional consume my priorities. Since I started going to crufit, I've rediscovered a sense of camaraderie I have missed for many years (formerly from playing team sports) and have re-prioritized my life to include more balance. The first class is FREE, so you might as well try it out. I compete in indoor rowing and have taken classes with Mark Sutro; they are superb. The rowing classes are challenging, exhausting, and illuminating. I have improved form every time. The trainers in most gyms simply don't know enough about proper technique to be helpful on the erg. I've been going to cruFit since the 1st week it opened 2 years ago and love this place! I am an avid rower--and go to Mark Sutro's mid-day classes every M, W and Fri. I had started rowing with Mark 3 years ago when he was at ClubOne and cancelled my membership as soon as he and his wife Mia opened cruFit. Why I will be a "lifer" at cruFit: Rowing is a fantastic workout! I use to run in the hills, use a treadmill and elipticals (boring) and had never taken any organized exercise class until my husband Phil started going to Mark's class at ClubOne and thought I'd like it. Since you really have to focus on your stroke and all the calibrations that go with it, it is never, ever boring. It has completely changed my body--I've dropped 2 sizes and never been in better shape (I'm 57 so that's a huge deal at this age). All of the other rowing instructors are great as well: David and Maggie are the others that I have taken classes with and they are all adept at working w/beginners and experienced rowers alike. The staff: Jen Grimm particularly, who runs the "front of the house" is so warm, professional and the perfect fit to be the "1st touch" that new people meet when they walk thru the door. I could go on and on--but suffice to say, I am never leaving! I have made many friends in my rowing class and look forward to seeing them regularly. I am very appreciative of all of the work and effort that Mark & Mia have put into bringing this special place and their talents to Montclair. read more

I love CRUfit. The location is so close to my house and gives me an excuse to spend some time in cute lil Montclair. The facility is so clean, the staff is super friendly and helpful, the equipment is state of the art (especially in the spin room) and brand new! I highly recommend taking Diana's TRX class. Great place for group training. I take spin classes there and appreciate the professionalism of the instructors. I am a triathlete and road cyclist and training at Cru helps me with my conditioning. All bikes have power meters, so you can fine tune your effort and use it to benchmark your fitness level. The front desk staff is always pleasant and helpful with any questions. Took an evening TRX class here. It was a really nice facility - though I didn't use it, i looked in on the spin room, and the setup, with stadium-style raised levels for visibility, and a door, so that a boisterous spin class doesn't disrupt whatever is going on outside the room. The TRX class was great. Lots of options on how to do motions with a little more intensity, or a little less so that each person can find their balance. I walked out of there feeling a little wobbly in the legs, but not so much that I was too sore to go about normal life the next day. Highly recommended. read more

Simply put CRUfit is amazing. I come 2-3 times a week for the cycling classes and couldn't be happier with my experiences. Mark and Devon are both fantastic instructors that really push you to get the most out of your workout. The system that they use makes the workout personalized, and challenging. My wife and I have been attending spinning (cycle) classes at Crufit since we moved to Oakland in 2013. We love the warm, welcoming energy and casual atmosphere which is also great for our young children to play and hang out while we are in class (as there is a children's play area right in direct sight of the front desk person for complete safety). We love the cycle classes and the ability to see your performance metrics on the front screens during class (like total kilowatt output, resistance level and RPM's) and compete with other riders which makes you push far harder than a cycle class without this software. We have also heard great things about the rowing classes. Mark Sutro (owner with his wife Mia) is very friendly, personable, extremely knowledgeable about fitness, biking and rowing and is an excellent cycle (spin instructor). He has a very strong sense of community and is always willing to contribute to our school's fundraisers without hesitation. Our very favorite spinning instructor is Abby who has great energy, enthusiasm and music. read more

I've been taking classes at CRUfit for a little over a year now, and it's the only gym I've ever stuck with so consistently. There's a wide variety of classes to choose from, and I especially enjoy Mia's classes; she always changes things up with new exercises so that the same class never gets boring. The classes are definitely challenging, but she always gives a few different variations for each exercise, so you can taylor the workout to your own level. There are people of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels in the classes, and the environment is welcoming and supportive (not cliquey/judgey like some gyms). The facilities and equipment are high quality, and they also provide towels and lockers with keys, which are nice little bonuses. It's also nice to be supporting a locally owned small business as opposed to a huge faceless chain, and I feel like there's a real sense of community at CRUfit. I actually enjoy coming here, and I never enjoyed working out in the past. read more
