I recommend it if you frequent this area. Staff is friendly and keeps the facilities clean. I rarely see broken equipment. Its smaller than most 24 hour fitnesses. Not a bad facility for the neighborhood but pay attention to your billing. Flex uses the same practice that many monthly billers use -- an automatic month-to-month recurrence unless you explicitly opt out. I asked but they refused to refund my unused months. If you sign up for one month you will be automatically billed unless you opt-out. The "click-to-cancel" rule should help with this issue but buyer beware. read more

My 17 year old daughter had a membership and she cancelled it before leaving for college in August 2024. She called and even went in person to cancel. After many assurances, that it was indeed cancelled, she kept getting charged monthly until I discovered this after so many months. They did nothing. They assured her she would not get charged again but they still sneaked in a charge in May 2025. I am so disappointed with this place. read more

I've have been a member of more than one gym in the 40+ years of training started with dealing with injuries. From my perspective, Flex Circuit Gym has provided a space where 1) I can always find the equipment, 2) helpful staff are readily available, and 3) keeps the space workable and clean. It has also been where I have had the pleasure of working with great trainers. Currently Jonathan DeVoto is my trainer and over the years (I am 82) I have worked with 4 trainers. All of them good. Jonathan has an approach that is, for me, quite different. His approach is integrative and wholistic. And it is working. I have severe muscle atrophy and have been told I would not recover. While I do not expect to returning to my former gym glory days, I am now able to do things I thought I would not be able to do again. And each time we meet he adds another increment to my progress. read more

This is such a wonderful, neighborhood gym conveniently located on Piedmont Avenue. I started going to this gym in December of 2017 right as I really started on my wellness journey- I had gained weight being in the tech space and really wanted to lose in an environment where I felt comfortable and able to tackle my goals without feeling intimidated. Flex was the absolute perfect place. Both the trainers and class instructors are all really friendly and great, and the clientele includes people of all shapes and sizes just trying to get a good workout in. The studio offers a variety of great classes throughout the week including several different kinds of yoga, HIIT, boxing, barre, pilates, and TRX. Although the classes aren't necessarily as intense as some other places, they really creative an inclusive environment that's easily adjustable for anyone's specific workout needs. I also loved the circuit itself, which made it really easy to squeeze in a 35-40 minute workout every day. Although I had to cancel my membership when I moved earlier this year, I wanted to make sure to leave this review to highly recommend it to anyone in the area/anyone looking for a really great, inclusive workout environment. Not only did Flex help me to achieve (and exceed) my own personal goals, it helped make fitness an integral part of my lifestyle. read more

Let me preface my review by saying this: this score is based purely on safety concerns. I have been coming to this gym the last month and a half and didn't start checking this til after the Ghostship Fire. Now, I'm much more aware of my surroundings and the exits. There are two main doors at the front of the gym: 1) the main one you walk through, and 2) the second door on the elliptical/treadmill side. Door 2) clearly says "Door to remain unlocked during business hours". The last 3 visits that door has been locked. The first time I called to advise the staff that the door should be unlocked based on what the door says and for safety reasons. The second time I told the staff person at the front desk. With a mild attitude, hesitation, and a phone call outside she opened the door. This third time I advised the staff person and to my surprise he knew who I was (maybe he was the person I spoke to on the phone the first time). Needless to say, if the door says that it is to remain open during business hours then it should be open. It seems as if this has not been communicated to all staff although I've been told twice management would be advised. If they don't want people to come in on that side there are two options: 1) remove the door handle on the outside, which would work based on how the door opens, or 2) put the door handle on the inside. Either way, both doors should be unlocked and it would be nice if the staff/management communicated to each other hag should be a morning check when they open the gym up. For gosh sakes, it's written in all caps white letters on the door. Kinda surprised no one has spoken up before. Hopefully there is a change. In the meantime, I will check the door and continue to communicate to staff if need be every time I come to work out. Update 12/26/16: Every time I come to this gym the door I previously reference is locked. I asked the lady at the front to open it, which she did. However, there was a guy here that seems like he works at the gym, who proceeded to tell me it's not a real exit (to the gist of that). Which, is funny because there's an green exit sign and a separate sign on the door that says, "These doors to remain unlocked during business hours". He said that sign was from a previous business prior to them acquiring this side of the building. I call BS. Part of building code and fire dept safety is based on the number of exits a building has. I HIGHLY doubt that this door that says "EXIT" is not considering a exit by the FD and Building Dept. Not once have I seen a non-member come through this door, or other issue they may have. At the end of the day, SAFETY should be a priority, for your staff and members. And lastly, if it is not an exit then remove the sign off the door and the green sign hanging from the ceiling. read more

I normally love Flex. The staff is kind and friendly, but the individual that was working tonight was so rude. I was in the stretching area and someone else was behind me in the secondary stretching area and this guy starts vacuuming getting so close he almost touches my mat sending dust into the air. Literally millimeters from me and unplugs and does the same thing to the person behind me. I understand when the gym closes wanting to get out the door, but your still open. The clock had just struck 8pm. It felt like he was trying to get us to leave by vacuuming so close to us. I smell of dust now. read more

This place has collapsed. It's dingy, cold, and unkempt. If there was another gym on Piedmont Ave. it wouldn't last long. The machines and equipment are old and not in good order and the staff is pretty much absent. No help at all. The men's locker room is filthy, I wouldn't dream of showering there. In the early morning or evening, the front room with the cardio equipment has may 2 or 3 working lights, I assume to hide the grim. And they keep the door open even when it's rainy and cold out! In the back, there aren't enough weights. Honestly, if another gym were to open nearby Flex would fail. read more

Despite having used Yelp for nearly a decade, nothing has compelled me to actually write a review...until now. I love this gym. I've been coming here on and off for years. I've left to try the big-name gyms (24-Hour Fitness, In-Shape, CitySports), but I always come back to Flex. I'm a runner kept happy with plenty of treadmills (I think there are 5 right by the window so I can ogle the cute dogs of Piedmont ave.). Circuit training set-up is very solid also, with convenient overhead "ding!" to signal when you need to move on to the next machine. This gym has all of the basics: a circuit to hit all the muscle groups, cardio room, free weights, and a classroom area for group classes that they offer. Staff are friendly. Machines are well-maintained. Hours are reasonable. They are constantly updating their gym to make it better. For folks who just want a no-frills place to get your daily work out in, this is your home. read more

My gym membership is used for several online classes only. The instructors are all outstanding. I started Senior Fitness with Kathleen a few years ago and try not to miss a session. This is a great workout to begin the day. She includes strength, cardio, balance & stretching all with a background of aptly chosen playlists. The morning Yoga classes lead masterfully by Nikki & Adriana are not to be missed if you want a peaceful/mindful strengthening and balance experience. Their instructions are easy to follow and I've learned a lot about proper positioning. Another great way to begin a day. Emily teaches the Pilates classes on Tuesday evening. She has an immense knowledge about the body so our positioning for each exercise is accurate. I have learned a great deal about how to protect my body with the specific strengthening and stretching exercises she teaches. As with all the instructors, everyone of them is willing to work with you if you have injuries or pain. I have been coming here a couple months for the Friday morning Zumba class. The instructor, Michelle, is awesome and always plays a variety of music. She is very enthusiastic and approachable. I'm not the best at choreography, but I feel very comfortable in class and get a great workout. Street parking is generally available, and the facilities are really clean. I would also make sure to bring a reusable water bottle since the water fountains are a bit far from the dance area. read more

I've been a member since January. I joined Flex primarily because of the awesome Yelp reviews, and because they offered personal trainers on-site. The gym is super rad, with a chill vibe and cool staff. But, my favorite part of the gym is my personal trainer, Nan. She has a deep commitment to her clients, and has such a passion for holistic approaches to fitness. She is organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and a creative problem-solver. She is very professional, while still being warm and approachable. She really personalized my workout routine, so that I stay motivated and feel rewarded by the process. She is wonderful and has had such an impact on me. I feel like she's given me the skills to continue my fitness routine on my own, while still encouraging me to keep moving forward. Even on weeks we don't meet, she sends me articles and emails with encouraging words. It means so much that she thinks of me, and takes the time to motivate me. I can't speak enough to the positivity and motivation I've gotten from this gym. I've learned so much these last four months! It's such a reminder that being healthy is a lifestyle choice we make every day. I couldn't do this without Flex or Nan. read more

So many great things to share about Flex! Excellent friendly staff that are always welcoming and offer help when needed. The gym is kept very clean and there are a lot of sanitizing wipes everywhere to keep everyone safe during these challenging times. Flex is a great neighborhood gym! I joined this gym about a year ago when I was trying to get in shape for my wedding. At first I thought that the circuit workout would not be challenging enough or that I would get bored. I was wrong! I couldn't believe what a great workout I could get in just 30 minutes. The staff is great about showing gym members modifications to make on the machines to help fitness goals or to mix up the workout. There is an area in the back of the gym with free weights and ab equipment to supplement your workout. I would usually workout in the early afternoons and there was no wait for the machines or cardio equipment. I also did about six months of personal training with Ned. He is a great trainer! He kept my workouts interesting and was very careful to choose exercises that would not irritate my existing knee injury. Not only did Ned focus on exercise, he also kept me in check and offered suggestions about food. Flex is the first gym I've ever been to where the front desk staff actually knew my name. I highly recommend this gym. It's definitely a great way to get back in shape. read more

There is so much to love about this gym that I have to do an update! I've been enrolled here and coming in on most weekdays for 8 months now. Flex is such a friendly place - the staff are relaxed and approachable, the crowd of regulars is diverse and chill. If you're a newcomer considering a place to do your regular, every-day fitness, Flex is a GREAT choice. The membership price is super reasonable, there is ample parking nearby (parking is only really scarce around lunchtime), and the circuit only takes half an hour to complete. If you're like me and you like to do the circuit in order, you might have to be flexible at busy times, but that's okay. Cardio is mostly elliptical, spinner bike, or treadmill, but 9 times out of 10 there is a cardio station open for you if that's what you need. I haven't used it, but they do have some dumbbell areas and kettle bells for your additional training needs. They also seem to do personal training sessions, and they offer a boot camp for members each Saturday morning. As far as the facility goes, it's constantly swept and the machines are cleaned frequently. I've never seen dust bunnies here! There are no showers, but there is a dressing room and a nice restroom if you need to change before or after your workout. I may be contributing to making my favorite neighborhood gym busier, but I really recommend this place, especially if you're intimidated by a full-on gym or you like to streamline your daily routine. I moved to the bay area last June and have been looking for a gym ever since. I was beginning to lose hope until I found Flex. I love the open/sunny atmosphere and tons of free workout space, as if that weren't enough- the month-to-month membership is the best value in oakland (trust me I've looked). Fellow gym-goers are chill, respectful & inviting. There's no "bro, do you even lift?" vibe, if you get me. Pro: -week free -offers classes -affordable -not crazy busy -knowledgeable staff Con: -NO BAR BELL/ Limited Free weights -Tight hours sometimes -Cramped -I'm pretty sure they don't have a membership plan yet with unlimited classes -It's getting more crowded during peak hours -sometimes the machines are in disrepair and it takes a while to fix them -I've seen the front desk person straight EAT A BURRITO in front of me while I'm doing cardio :( They keep getting more equipment...and Putting it in already crowded spaces. ( If im on a treadmill and I'm coming off an incline and I put my hands on the rail they will squish on the rail of the next treadmill) There isn't another gym that fits my needs in the area or I'd probably switch. read more

I fell in love with this gym during a free trial and then signed up for a year. I've gotten increasingly frustrated with it over time. It JUST expanded and added equipment as well as storefront size, so it'll be interesting to see whether this makes it better or worse. Things to love: --No TVs. THANK YOU! It's increasingly rare to encounter TV-free zones, and I love that this is one. --Equipment is the best I've ever used in a circuit gym. --Nice diversity of people: age, race, gender ID, etc. Feels like a nice mix of people who are coming to get fit in a judgment-free area. --When I first joined, people were really well behaved. No cell phones, no meathead weight-left grunting.* --When I first joined, I was really impressed with the "music." Most gyms blast too-loud "music" that is very grating and sounds like a dance club. Here there were some cool stations it seemed were on a lot, like classic soul and stuff and the volume was lower.* Things to be annoyed by: --Staff training is inconsistent and incomplete. I had three different staff people tell me three different things about the vacation policy. None appeared to follow through with my questions, and I finally got clarification after several months. But it should just be on the site and on the contract so no one goes through this. --One staff member overly socializes with members, so if you're doing cardio you can be stuck next to that person shouting their conversation across the aisle to the front desk. I don't want to hear that much about your personal life. --*Speaking of which, increasing use of cell phones here. Srsly, people? As much as humans should know how to behave better, they do not. A friend recently sat by a woman using her phone IN a public movie screening! So FLEX really needs to police this. --*Increasing meathead lifter dude gross grunts and groans. YUCK! Keep it to yourself! --*Increasing annoyance on the radio stations. On a recent visit, the SAME Journey song played TWICE in a 20-min period. Being a captive audience to Journey is pure torture, so the same Worst Song Ever playing twice in 20 minutes is awful. Since then I've heard that same Journey song once per visit. All that "cool" gym music I used to hear before joining went away and has been increasingly replaced with the Top 40/clubby stuff or weird classic rock. I know that you just can't please everyone on that front; there's got to be a common denominator, though, of greater crowd pleasers. And no reason for the same song to hit twice in 20 minutes even if it's good. I will report back after a few post-expansion visits. I LOVE FLEX! I also loved Fit Lite before Flex, but I really do like Flex better! They have brand new machines that are intuitive to use, additional cardio machines, and some of the nicest clientele and staff around! I do have another supplemental gym membership, but Flex is so affordable that it is no big deal. I love being able to walk to the gym and get my workout done in 30 minutes. I'm excited to try the Saturday boot camp sometime soon! I went from never going to the gym (early 2010), to going 4 times a week now that I'm a member of Flex. read more

Man, I love this gym. Wait, did I just say I loved a gym? That my friends is a testament to how lovely Flex is. I'm not a workout junky, in fact before I found Flex I wasn't doing much exercise at all. I felt a bit scared at first to try this place out because you need to be walked through the circuit program by a staff member, but don't worry, they are so nice. I've never felt judged or pressured by anyone at Flex. Everyone just wants you to have a great workout and be happy, which makes for a great atmosphere. I love the circuit system because it keeps you busy. You don't get bored and if something is hard (the crazy ab machine) you know you only have to do it for 1 minute before the magical "switch stations" bell goes off. The circuit ensures that every part of your body gets worked out and that you get cardio in as well. Try this place out if you are looking for a friendly neighborhood gym. This place will whip you into shape quickly if you put in the time. The one thing I'm sad about is that I moved to Berkeley and it's now harder for me to get to. However, I'm still a loyal member because that's how much I like this place. read more

I really really like this gym!! I'm doing a 1 month trial with them, and so far, I've loved it! The people in the front desk are always friendly. I love that they are always willing to answer your questions. Thank goodness they expanded their cardio machines. 3 ellipticals were definitely not enough. I like the whole idea of circuit training - DING! YOUR MINUTE IS UP - no one hogs the machines, you also can't just sit there and rest until you feel like doing your next set of reps. It forces me to push myself for a whole minute. Only thing is, I wish it was 1.5 minutes instead of 1 minute per machine because it takes me a few seconds to hop onto the next, and i feel like I'm missing out on a few reps... =[ so i really just have 40 seconds of workout vs the whole minute. I love seeing the same people there every day. That really shows how well it works! I also love that the people there come in all different shapes and sizes. It doesn't feel intimidating like it does in other gyms, where everyone is super buff and lifting 1000 lbs. Here everyone is just normal people, getting fit. =] A couple things I hope would change in the future is: 1) Extended hours - I'm not saying until 12am, but i think 10PM would be nice, and longer hours on the weekends. Sometimes I want to go workout, but the gym is closed. =[ 2) More machines - I want to work out my forearms, glutes, calves lower back - but there aren't enough. 3) More weights, there's only a set of weights outside, so if i have to use the 5lbs and someone grabbed it first, i have to stand around and wait, but I don't want to seem like I'm rushing the person using it. I should go try one of the classes they're offering... Maybe yoga!! I will definitely be continuing my membership - and hopefully more improvements will come. read more

The new Flex gym is great. It's like the old FitLite, but with all new equipment. Marcus and Brian are still there, so we have some good trainers. For me, the circuit gym concept works really well. I love that fact that the whole workout only takes about 35 minutes so I can go from my house or office, park, go to the gym and get home in 50 to 60 minutes. That allows me to go to the gym three times a week. I also love the fact that I only have to do each station for sixty seconds and I don't have to think about which machine I should do, in which order. (If you want to stay at a station longer, you can, as long as no one is waiting). This is the only time in my life that I have gone to the gym on a regular basis and I actually enjoy it. It's also great to be able to support a locally owned gym. read more

Awesome circuit gym. I used to go to this spot when it was a 24-Hour Fit Lite, and they have improved the offerings since becoming Flex (more cardio equipment, better circuit machines, and friendlier staff). I went in to learn a little about the place recently, and Marcus gave me a great introduction to all the machines as well as a wealth of other information (how many people come in during peak times, when those peak times are, what my options for membership are, etc.). He was incredibly knowledgable and warm while also being down-to-earth and not intimidating at all (and for this new mom who has taken frumpiness to the next level and who hasn't set foot in a gym since before I got pregnant, feeling like I was welcome even though I'm out of shape was super important). I'm definitely going to join and look forward to enjoying Flex as my new exercise home. Even though I considered not doing a review because the last thing I want is for the place to become super busy (obviously for my own selfish reasons), I just had such an awesome experience, I had to put it in writing. This place is the perfect gym for busy people! In and out in 30min after a complete body workout. One of the good things about this gym is that you can stay as long as you want and also use the equipment like it's a regular gym. The gym that is ever changing for the better. When I first joined flex, there were lots of missing elements to have a fully functioning gym. Fast forward to this year, the owner have upgraded and expanded the space and added new equipments that I have zero to complain about. My workouts typically lasts no longer than an hour at 830-9am with my friend and the gym is never crowded. There are no more than 10 people at the gym at one time. The weight room is almost always empty and my friend I and can have the entire room to hold our workouts and dance parties. The staff are super friendly. Ned, Justin and Marcus are always helpful when needed. Current wish list....a sauna. Lol read more

Excellent local gym on Piedmont Avenue with exceptional friendly staff. The gym is kept very clean and there are cleaning products placed throughout the gym for everyone to wipe down machines before/after use. Safety is a priority at Flex of which I truly appreciate! The gym is never too crowded and there are a lot of exercise options for people to pick. It's helped me lose my quarantine weight gain! I highly recommend this gym to those that are local! read more

I have been a member since FLEX opened (it was a Fit Light before converting), and I have to say the team is fabulous, the community spirit of those that work out here is great, and the results of the cardio-core-strength mixed circuit work. New ownership is very responsive to member concerns in every little detail, from new mats to music to play. Over my first 2 years I have lost about 1lb per month and now I feel much stronger, doing a circuit roughly 3 times per week and running treadmill 3 others. More comfortable taking my shirt off, as I sport some decent abs now. Marcus has a great personality and will hook you up. One note, the group likes to get on and off the machines according to the one minute per set timers, so if you like to sit on a machine and take your time, this is not for you (when circuit is busy). read more

Love this place! Found it while searching for a place to rehab after foot surgery, had never been a gym goer before. Visited many, chose Flex as it's relaxed, clean, friendly and filled with a very diverse population of people, many of them older like me, some of them young and buff. The staff is universally friendly and courteous, the facilities are unpretentious and practical, with lockers, a locker room with showers if needed, a constant supply of clean towels, a cold filtered water dispenser (which I've found essential!) a circuit training facility I've yet to try (nor have I tried any of the plethora of classes) and a good amount of standard machines. Elliptical, bike, treadmill, stair climber. Having made it almost 70 years without trying a gym, I have to say, I'm happy to finally get there. Thanks Flex for being so great! read more

I got my ass kicked. In a good way. I want more! I had never been to a boot camp class before, but I gave Athena's Saturday morning boot camp a try because my butt just isn't getting into shape on its own. We all met on the playground of a school close to the gym, and I was happy to see people of all levels of fitness in the class - some people were very in shape and others were like me, who . . . well . . . are working at it. I was scared that Athena would be mean and yell at us like we were in an actual millitary boot camp, but she was awesome! She was encouraging and energetic and enthusiastic - she really kept us all motivated throughout the entire class to push ourselves and get an amazing workout. And what an amazing workout this was! We ran, we jumped, we did the "Apolo Ohno," we relayed, we planked - and all to amazing music in the sunshine. Working out doesn't get much better than this. I was definitely sore the next day, but it was a good sore and I'll gladly take more of that if it means my behind looks good! If you want an awesome (and fun!) way to get into shape, check this class out - you will not be disappointed. I only wish Flex would offer it more than once a week. read more

Love this place. Friendly staff, clean and never packed, when I go in between 10am and 2pm, mostly. Wish the music was a lot more upbeat sometimes, so I have the tempo. If you are a nonprofit employee, do speak to the owner, as they work with you. They made it extremely affordable. I am so grateful. I lost my rings there and it was totally MY fault for taking them off when I worked out. It fell off my pocket and they were so helpful. We didn't find them of couse but they helped me look, helped me with getting a locksmith to open the cubby to retrieve my belongings, sent me an email, called me etc. That is customer service, right there. Pros: Staff is friendly, it's never packed (even during peak hours), the circuit training they set up is great. Cons: Parking is sometimes hard to find, gym is small, only 2 treadmills, 4 elliptical machines, 2 stationary bikes (but never a problem getting on the machines). I like Flex, though it has a few drawbacks. I've been a member for a couple years. There are really three groups of people who go to the gym: 1. Casual Cardio 2. Classes / Personal Training 3. Dedicated Exercisers I'd say most people here are in the casual group, with classes getting much more popular once the space expanded this year. There are few dedicated exercisers because this place was lacking weights, especially barbells. They added a small amount of these lately, so it's gotten better. I'm definitely dedicated to exercise, though I'm usually outside on my bike or paddling when the weather is good so this gym is more of a backup option. I've never used their personal trainers or classes. I like that the weights are almost always available. I appreciate that there are no TVs. I love that I was allowed to put my plan on hold for a few months while out of town. I don't like the lack of benches, squat rack, and low-weight machines. I am not at all a gym rat, yet I've exceeded the stack on most of the machines. Anyway, go here if you're into occasional cardio or classes. Don't go here if you're trying to squeeze in some weight training. The one barbell and dumbbell rack is MINE. read more
