    Band workout at sunrise
    Casey W.

This class is the best! I just hit the one year mark attending classes taught by Anna. Participating in boot camp has delivered the results I expected (greater strength all around, fewer injuries, better muscle mass and tone) and some that I never imagined (solid new community of people, the magic of watching the city and its people come to life at sunrise, a weekend running crew...I could keep going). Best of all, I leave class feeling happy, energized and confident, which is an amazing way to start the day. If you like exercising outside and like workouts that are different every day, give Oakland Adventure Boot Camp a try!

I've been going to this Boot Camp now for 8 years. It's always a terrific workout, and I feel so much better when I start my morning with Anna and my bootcamp community. I love that it's all women, so there is zero judgment. I love that it is outdoors, since I work in an office and spend the entire rest of the day inside. I love the community of women who are there to cheer each other on, whether it's running a mile or applying for a promotion at work. Things to know: - It's primarily direct instruction. Anna sends a schedule at the beginning of the week, so you know the basic premise of the class (kickboxing, ladder workout, partner drills, etc.), but she guides you through each move. - It's Lake Merritt. If you live in Oakland, you know that it entails encountering some urban wildlife from time to time. But you also get inspired by how many people come out in the mornings to get their walk/run/tai chi/boxing/whatever kind of workout in. - It's rain or shine. Yes, we work out in the rain! - It's a community. Lots of women there have been coming for years. You can certainly use it as a kick start to getting into shape, but also as a lifestyle of morning fitness. - You get in what you put in. It's not magic...you have to work hard if you want results. But Boot camp makes it easy - just show up and put in the energy. Anna will design the workout to challenge you, and your community will be there to get you out of bed and out to class.

A key factor of whether you will stick with an exercise program is the having a frictionless environment. When you walk in through the front doors, the vibe is very chill so you do not feel anxious walking into class. Most importantly, the other people working in the gym are extremely supportive and will become your community quickly. Having all these things in place makes a fitness routine so much easier to establish. There are even free community classes if that's how you prefer to give this place a try. The instructors are excellent. Classes are capped at 10 for general fitness classes, and three for Pilates. As a result, their instructors can give you abundant corrections and attention so you avoid injuries and develop great form. If you are worried that you don't know how to use a Pilates Reformer, you can hire a private trainer for three classes to learn the ropes like I did. This is the premier gym in Oakland for rehabilitation from injuries. I am a 7 year cancer survivor who has had numerous surgeries. My last surgery was major, set me back the farthest, and happened during the height of the pandemic; recovery felt close to impossible until I walked through these doors. Not only have I converted fat into muscle, lost weight, gotten so much stronger and gained so much range of motion over 5 months, but I can keep trying new things like TRX Bootcamp that turned out to be fun. Truve's got a wide range of things you can try to keep from being bored. Also, you can go buy fresh baked bread and pastries at Firebrand Artisan Bakery next store or empanadas at Javi's Empanadas caddy corner after you finish your workout. Truve's location is fabulous.

Let's start with the pros: it's in a good location, it's a sizable space, and they have a lot of cardio machines. I recently had to wait for a machine, and that may have been the first time I've experienced that here. Now for the cons: 1) Like other East Bay YMCA locations, there is no towel service. I have exercised at YMCA locations all over the Bay Area, and I've noticed that on the Peninsula and in San Francisco, Marin, and the South Bay, members do not have to bring their own towels. I get that it's a luxury, but I wish the holdouts in the East Bay would get with the program. 2) There is no hot tub. (This is something the Berkeley YMCA does have.) 3) Machines and other things are out of order for extended periods of time. (See photos.) 4) The water pressure in the men's locker room is lackluster. 5) They renovated the men's locker room last year and it is certainly nicer, but I don't understand why they insist on those mats that feel slightly less painful than stepping on legos. (See photo.) 6) The staff does not answer the phone - at least not consistently. Earlier this month, I called three times over the course of a week to ask about something I accidentally left in the locker room and to check about holiday hours. All calls were during business hours, and no one ever picked up. I left a voicemail the first time and never got a call back. Am I going to continue using the YMCA? Yes - it's a 10-minute walk from home, and it has the basic gym necessities for me. I'm unlikely to recommend it until they start putting in a little more effort, though.

Not only that this one is cheaper than other ones, but also it's very personal. While you work out with many other people in other camps, here, you get to work out in a smaller group so you get more attention from the instructors. I love that. The instructors are really funny, too. Also, on top of the regular bootcamp stuff, they teach self-defense for women. Since I live in Oakland alone as a woman and have to walk to and from the BART station, I always felt it was dangerous. I have taken self-defense lessons like once a year, but I always forget the techniques after a week. It was intense, but only 45 minutes long, so definitely manageable. Martin is a great instructor - he really pushed us, but was very sweet and friendly and encouraging. The workouts changed every day, so it was never boring. I felt great afterwards. I went regularly for 2 weeks. Then the new semester started and I only made it in once in the third week, and then, all of a sudden, their schedule changed: morning classes were to be held only at the Montclair location, while afternoon and evening classes would be held at the Uptown location. This didn't fit in with my schedule, so I only made it in once more - to a Saturday morning class at the Montclair location. (That was a good class, too, but I liked being outside better.) I got a text the other day saying that 500 William Street would be hosting morning classes again. Since my Living Social deal is long over and I can't afford their normal prices at the moment, I won't be returning immediately, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new fitness routine.

I spent a few days looking for a personal trainer close to work. After some searches on the Internet and Yelp reviews, I started reading reviews about Nu Fitness and Nick. After some positive reviews, I filled out the form and emailed him. I noted my fitness journey to this point in life and briefly explained what I wanted to accomplish going forward. I found myself in a terrible routine, work 12 hours, then heading to the local breweries for a few beers and dinner. Needless to say this didn't bode well for my wellbeing. Looking back over the years, I had gained control of health in my mid-30s, where I lost 40+ pound, gained strength and started running. Running led me to a period in my life that saw me conquer a few 50-mile races. An achievement I never thought I would attempt, hell I never thought I would run 5 miles. Life changed. Priorities changed and slowly I saw everything I had worked hard for slowly slip away. Now age 55, life wasn't getting any easier. I knew I was not very active. I also knew that my daily routine was not one for success. I decided I needed to help make a change in my life, but more importantly to make that change permanent. Previously I joined 24 Hour Fitness (never again) but found too many excuses NOT to go. Sound familiar? Searching Yelp for personal trainers, I ran down a local list in the Oakland/Alameda area. Reading profiles and reviews, checking website, I ran across a trainer, Nick Baltazar. It felt right. I emailed Nick with my story and filled out the form on the Nu Fitness website. It wasn't even a day and I had a response from Nick and we were talking about my fitness journey, where I had been and what I wanted to achieve. He was willing to work with my schedule to get three days of training. After a day of communication with Nick, he connected me with Wyatt. I met Wyatt at Nu Fitness, located at 2345 Broadway, parking in The Hive. Yes, they have easy parking and validation while you are at your session. This makes getting in and out quick and easy. I was highly impressed with the facility, the way Nick had spoke about it, I knew I would be. The work out areas were clean and profession, a small reception area, all Rogue power racks and weights, with room for everyone to work on their fitness goals. Wyatt Berreman, my personal trainer worked with me, after provided basic information from Nick on what I wanted to accomplish. He created a plan specifically for me, tracking my journey, weights and reps for each session. It's been just about 2 months, but its been reestablishing a workout routine. I have a sense of accomplishment, even through I don't see it in the mirror...yet. It will happen. Wyatt has been a wealth of knowledge and has helped create a plan for me to gain strength, balance and flexibility. But also work within my limitations due to previous surgeries on my knee and shoulder. I am very impressed with Nu Fitness, Nick, Wyatt and what they have to offer in the way of personal training. I would highly recommend giving Nick a chance to show you want they can do to help create a fitness plan for your to achieve your goals.
