Pretty tasty place in the downtown area. I ordered the seafood "stew", which was very much like bouillabaisse that you may find in other places. Flavor was excellent. One thing I wish would be different is the portion size to price ratio. From my perspective if this dish would come on a platter, and not a plate, it would've been appropriate, seeing that a significant amount of space was taken up by shells. Also, more broth! This restaurant is small and cozy. The decor is casual, large pictures frame the dining area. My family and I decided on this restaurant for our Christmas Eve dinner. Our reservation was scheduled for 7pm. Our table was not yet ready so they guided us to the bar area, as there is no room to wait by the entrance. Once seated, we were served water and asked about drinks. We placed our orders of fish, lamb, and pasta. My fish (bass) was delicious. The salmon was tasty. The lamb was average. It was to be cooked medium but it was delivered medium rare. A woman holding a basket stopped by our table. She asked if we wanted bread. We said yes and she gave us each the HARD ends of Italian bread. She made a quick comment about how they were all ends but I didn't see the humor. She didn't even offer to get us fresh bread. For the most part, the dinner was lovely. Mostly, because we were having a family dinner together. Not sure if we will return. read more

The dinner experience last night was simply awesome! We were a party of five and everyone at the table loved their food, including the chef in our group. Sometimes it's the details that win you over. For example, my husband I shared a beet salad.We each got a small plate that was very nicely presented. AND the salad tasted wonderful. And their homemade bread is a dream. The staff was attentive, yet not overbearing. We've included this restaurant on our list of favorites and would even consider making an extra trip to Sheperdstown for a dinner night out. read more

The press room is my favorite restaurant. Everything we have ever gotten from here has been delicious. The rack of lamb is by far the best on the menu. And if your getting an appetizer you have to try the grilled calamari and oysters on the half shell. We eat here for all special occasions. read more

You really need to get rid of the smart aelic who answers the phone. Rather than taking my request to have our friend be our waitress, he turned us away. We have been going there for many years. All he had to do was say I will try. How would it look if we went there and she saw us paired up with someone else? I am sure she would be hurt. Easily one of the best restaurants in the area. I take my daughters there for date nights. I do have a vision issue, so I find the lighting to be somewhat dark during dinner hour, however, the food is flawless every time. Service is friendly and attentive. read more

Very tiny place with nice decor and exposed brick walls. Reminded us of a small restaurant in Italy, especially the way the menu was divided up and the bread is served with olive oil only (unless you ask for butter). The sweet corn and clam chowder was excellent, the pasta with shrimp was good but lacked seasoning, and my friends paella looked awesome but I didn't taste it. Packed on a Saturday night but we were able to get a late reservation that day, and although we couldn't get seated when we arrived 15 minutes early, they were ready for us right on time. Worth at least trying if you're in town. Service is a little relaxed (slow) so you have to not be in a hurry to enjoy. read more

Went to dinner when traveling on business here- I must say, the meal was quite delish- we were here on a Monday night, I believe so it wasn't very crowded, but everything consumed was good to polite standards. The only thing is that the bar is a bit awkward and narrow, so not much room to move around when you are dining with a group. I want to go back. I was prepared to be dazzled, and I wasn't. It was good enough to warrant a second chance, though. The decor is very cool. The service was pretty darn good. There were bright spots in the evening. I got the veal chop, which was on special. It was good -- didn't knock my socks off, but it was tasty. I also had a split pea soup that tasted like old fashioned beans and ham. Again, it was good -- it just didn't wow me. My wife had a seafood pasta that looked really good. I tasted a shrimp and it was great! She also had the clam and corn chowder, and was very pleased with both dishes. I also ordered the pate. Again, it was okay, but I've had better. Three stars because my wife enjoyed her meal more than I did. I really want to go back and try a pasta dish (and see if I can get this place up to four). read more

Made a reservation for 5pm explaining that we were attending a graduation ceremony at Shepherd and were going to be very short on time. They were overwhelmingly accommodating and made sure we were waited on immediately. We were a party of 6 and everyone ordered different selections. The Press Room is by far the best restaurant in Shepherdstown. Whatever the special is, it's usually incredible. Last time I was here I had the rack of lamb with mint pesto, cooked to the chef's preference, a perfect medium. That being said, I know that the head chef/owner's idea of medium may be rarer than some people's so adjust accordingly. Fresh and amazing seafood, solid bartenders, really good steaks, attentive service, but their new-ish "once slice of bread at a time" policy is a little odd. And actually, considering how much you will pay for pad thai or pizza down the block, this place is a pretty damn good value. Most of the portion sizes are good but if you entree just doesn't do the trick, you're in luck because the desserts are fantastic. Every time I come here I want to order about nine different things off the menu, but luckily a soup, two salads, two apps, two entrees, and two desserts (an excessive amount of food for two people) can be had for around $100 plus drinks and tip Oh yeah, and the Sunday brunch is awesome too!! read more

But .. we were disappointed at brunch because we waited 40 minutes for our food and we were the first customers and were not expecting to wait this long. We wished they could at least tell us that the dish we ordered would take so long - and the resulting dish was different than what the waitress expressed. Her excuse was she was new - but she could give a more humble apology. I wish they could be more professional. Sorry I will not come back. read more

We have had dinner there several time now (each other time was closer to a 4*). This time I ordered the Lobster Risotto from the special list. The dish was watery (a lot of excess liquid), the lobster was just claw meat (no tail) and the rice looked like normal white rice not Arborio.... My husband and I were SO looking forward to a good meal after a lovely day in Shepherdstown. This place had a lot of hype surrounding it, so we thought we'd finish the day with on a high note with a lovely meal at the Press Room. The ambience is charming and the service was quite good, especially for a Saturday evening. But as the three stars suggests, I would call this restaurant just okay. We were both disappointed with our meals. We started out on a good note with the oysters. Then the bread came - it was thick and doughy and almost undercooked...nothing appealing at all about it. I ordered hangar steak, which ended up being on the tough side. The menu didn't say anything all about the sides, and my meal came with mashed potatoes (decent enough) and overcooked broccoli rabe. My husband ordered the chicken breast with pappardelle. The chicken was boiled (not grilled) to within an inch of its life and was very bland. The pasta was overcooked and was accompanied by the same overcooked greens. Meh. Neither one of us finished our meals, and we decided not to try dessert. We always keep an open mind about rating restaurants, and in the more rural areas, it's not reasonable to expect that one would find the same caliber dining as the urban areas like Washington, DC (which is what we're used to). But you never know when you'll find a gem off the beaten path, which is what we were hoping for. In this case we were disappointed. The prices are cheaper than DC restaurants, but we paid an awful lot for a meal that missed the mark on many fronts. read more

Saturday 23 May 2015 - a delicious meal. Drinks from the bar were among the best anywhere. The Manhattan was generous and made with perfect proportions. Service was excellent. Our waiter made great recommendations about wine and food both. The Gorgonzola custard appetizer was light, unique and delicious. The gazpacho was perfectly seasoned. Pasta dishes were made with house made pasta noodles and cooked to perfection. The pappardelle pasta with fresh mushrooms was wonderful. We can highly recommend the Press Room. read more

Service was friendly without any pomposity, and they accommodated our casually dressed family without any fuss. Definitely recommended. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at The Press Room, from appetizers to dessert. The service was also wonderful, just the right pace. We didn't feel rushed or like we were waiting around at any point during the meal. For an appetizer, I shared the mussels. They were fantastic, served with spinach, tomatoes, and a delicious broth that you should use the toasted bread that comes with it (as well as their delicious table side served bread) to sop up every last drop! For my entree, I had the pasta primavera. The pasta was a perfect texture. The vegetables were fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce was delicious and drenched over the pasta in the perfect amount, not overly dressed but certainly not lacking in flavor. For dessert, I had the tiramisu, which was delicious, but my favorite dessert at the table was the short cake my dad ordered. The lemon poppy seed biscuit is served with fresh berries and whipped cream. I can't wait to return for another delicious meal! read more

Meh. Restaurant was empty when we arrived for early dinner, except for a few folks at the bar. Salads were ok. Seafood Paella was miniature and flavorless - white rice, yellow onion and mealy Roma tomatoes do not paella make. A few tiny bites of chorizo and the smallest mussels I've ever seen. Sad. Small size turned out to be a blessing in disguise. ;) Service was friendly enough, but given how few patrons were in the place it was odd to have dirty dishes lingering on the table (particularly while the staff person nearby was chatting with the hostess). read more
