After a long, hot day of kayaking, my wife and I stopped by The Canary Grill, hoping to relax and enjoy a good meal. The hostess was welcoming and quickly seated us. From there, however, things took a turn, and the reason this review is only three stars can be summed up in one word: KAREN. Karen was our server, though from the moment she arrived at our table, it was clear she didn't want to be. Her body language screamed disinterest, and she made minimal effort to hide her preference for socializing with a nearby table of bikers over doing her actual job. When we inquired about a specialty lemonade advertised at the table, Karen said she'd check if they had it. Instead, she first visited the biker table, chatted for a while, wandered to the bar, and then circled back to the bikers again before finally letting us know it was available. We placed our drink orders and Karen returned to the biker party. Our drinks arrived 15 minutes later, and we placed our meal orders: a ribeye with baked potato (sour cream and butter) and coleslaw for me, and a crab cake with broccoli and the same baked potato setup for my wife. Karen? Back at the biker table. The food came out about 20 minutes later and I'll be honest; it was excellent. The chef grilled my ribeye to perfection. I'm not usually a fan of baked potatoes, but this one changed my mind. Even the coleslaw, though a bit too creamy for me, was fresh and flavorful. Presentation was spot on. But as we ate, dehydrated from hours in 100-degree heat, we realized we needed water refills and extra sour cream. Unfortunately, by then, the biker party had left, and so had Karen. After another 10 minutes of searching, we flagged her down. She returned with a larger water glass but no lemon. We had to flag her down again, and another server eventually brought the lemon. And just as we were halfway through our entrées, Karen dropped off the check and asked if we wanted dessert. The implication was clear: she'd already decided we wouldn't be needing it. When we finally finished our meal, we waited. And waited. Karen had vanished. I approached the hostess to ask if we could check out, and she said she'd find Karen. This seemed to trigger an all-out search effort by the staff, as multiple servers began looking for her. Eventually, another server processed our bill. As we were pulling out of the parking lot, we spotted Karen laughing with one biker outside. Maybe she's ready to trade in her apron for a leather jacket, but her lack of professionalism did a disservice to the kitchen and the rest of the staff. To be clear: the food was fantastic. The kitchen deserves five stars. But Karen's service dragged the entire experience down. A server's job is to be present, attentive, and at the very least courteous -- none of which applied here. read more

Ok, I'm going out on a limb and giving 4 stars here, mostly because so many of the other revies were bad. We came for a late lunch on a Friday, and it was unseasonably warm for November so we were able to enjoy the beautiful patio. It's not the best view because it looks out over 522, but it's pretty high up so much nicer than that other road side restaurants. Their patio is very dog friendly and our waitress even brought water for our pup. Our waitress was super friendly and helpful. When my husband commented that he didn't like his blond ale she offered to exchange it. My Antitum red ale was much better so he swapped to that one. My brother in law got a local IPA which he really enjoyed. The men got burgers which were quite large. I don't think it was a gourmet burger but perfectly decent and there weren't any crumbs left. I got the fish sandwich which was a very generous portion and fried perfectly and quite reasonable for $14. The house made potato chips were nice. Food came out reasonably quickly so a good experience all around! read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I went there with my trained service dog and was denied service and told if I sat in the back by myself they would allow it. They are not in compliance with ADA my dog has been to 29 states with me and 2 international countries and here in Berkeley Springs WV is the only place I was treated like complete garbage for having a service dog. We left so I can't say service or food was bad as well but first 3 minutes impression left me never willing to go there again and I will be putting this company on blast with service dog community. I am also a professional dog trainer for service dogs and train 6 every year for veterans and autism assistance I'm appalled by the treatment from this establishment. read more

Nothing went well here. We waited to be seated for 30 min ordered and waited another 45 min. It came out in parts and pieces. Ordered a drink and it took at least 30 min. What should have been an hour meal was 2 hrs for mediocre food and terrible service. On the plus side the view outside was not bad. Def not recommend, go somewhere else read more

Amazing find in Berkeley Springs!! The hostess and waitress were both so sweet and quick to seat and serve us. So many options on the menu looked incredible it was hard to choose. The food came out quickly and it was delicious! One of the specials for the day was a buffalo wrap and we also got a crab cake. The menu is well marked for gluten free items! The restaurant itself was so clean and roomy. If it wasn't for the rainy weather we would have taken advantage of their beautiful balcony. Would absolutely come back! read more

This is a two night review. The food and ambiance were so incredible I made a return trip after last nights dinner. First night I shared the fried green tomatoes, crab dip and pork BBQ nachos. All of which were well prepared and arrived in good order. The fried green tomatoes were hot, delicious and well presented, the Crab Dip was more than enough for the party of 8 and the nachos blew me away with its towering deliciousness. BBQ pork, pico de gallo, cheese, and jalapeños with sour cream all piled up and melted into one of the best nachos presentations I've seen in quite a awhile. Everything blended together to create a wonderful appetizer dining experience. The icing on the cake was the BBQ Brisket platter served up with with a vinaigrette Jalapeño cole slaw and a nicely prepared sweet potato. . The brisket was plentiful and near equal to that which I tried at Franklin BBQ in Austin Texas, Tonight we had the Pork BBQ nachos which was just as awesome as the previous night, followed by a 1/2 spinach salad and 1/2 BBQ chicken salad, both of which were delicious and incredibly big for just 1/2 salads. The musician tonight added to the nice ambiance and excellent food rounding out two really nice dining experiences. This is certainly a must stop for lunch or dinner on future trips and I'll make sure I call ahead for a reservation as this place is hopping. To top it off we picked up at To Go order which was a bowl of the cream of crab soup, which my daughter absolutely loved and said that it was loaded with crab but a good many shells. I remarked that it was a good sign showing real crab was used! In addition she ordered up a cheese burger that was cooked perfectly! The only disappointment was having the extra charge added to our bill by using a debit card, not a credit card but a debit card. Please don't ruin a great experience by being penny wise and pound stupid. Trying to make up the difference is why food cost is in place along with rolling fees into a menu. I suggest they post a sign outside saying you will be charged for using credit and debit cards and not hide it on the bill in small print. Don't hide these fees, instead be a little more transparent, or absorb them in day to day costs, which is much better customer service. read more

We drove by this place on the way to the nearby park, and knew we would stop here for lunch. It has a stellar view. The food was mediocre, though the service was good. We ordered a cheese platter appetizer, which advertised local cheese. I had high hopes. Instead, grocery store orange cheddar, a very mild white cheese, and this liquidy, shredded cheese that just presented terribly and lacks any taste. It came with a large dab of mustard and apple butter, neither one of which complimented any cheese, and a pile of Carr's water crackers. It did also have a half dozen sliced pickles, which were good. Lunch itself consisted of a pair of sandwiches, one "Carolina" BBQ pulled pork, and one brisket. The pulled pork sandwich came out covered in a very sweet, red BBQ sauce. It might have been a little overly sweet, but it actually complimented the pulled pork well. But. That's not a Carolina style pulled pork sandwich -- Carolina style is with the spiced vinegar sauce. I have seen places that combine the two styles, meat cooked in the vinegar based sauce and slathered with the tomato, but this pulled pork lacked any hint of vinegar to it. Not bad, but not what I expected, not what I wanted, not what I ordered. It had, however, completely soaked through the bun, to the point where the bun was starting to break down -- makes me wonder if this was pre-made. The brisket sandwich was fairly good. The brisket itself had great taste, and the jalapeno sauce, which wasn't overly spicy, nicely complimented it. Finally, I will say that while the view of the hills is nice, it does overlook a busy road. It does make getting out tricky (especially if you're turning left). We gave the Canary Grille a second chance. We originally visited when they first opened and I don't think they had their act together, but they sure had it together on this visit. The Cream of Crab soup was one of the best I've eaten in this area. I like my cream soups to be thick and this was thick, thick, thick without any taste of how it was thickened. Hubby ordered the cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, and a side of waffle fries. He didn't say much during the meal, so I know it must've been good because he gobbled it down quickly. I ordered the fish tacos which were fried and thought they were tasty. The spicy aïoli wasn't too hot that it was distracting and really enhanced the fish greatly. The slaw, as you can see from my picture, was not fresh and I couldn't eat it. My meal was a great lunch, but it would not be filling if you have a big appetite. Our waitress was pleasant, efficient, and very nice; she even let me move the table a few feet so we could sit in the shade of the building, and not directly in the sun. I had to share a picture of the view from our table. Talk about nice ambience on a beautiful day! If you go, I would suggest you take a jacket or sweater as sometimes the deck can be pretty windy, but I encourage you to try the Canary Grille in Berkeley Springs. read more

Canary Grill On the way back from visiting Frank Lloyd Wright's Pennsylvania houses (Fallingwater and Kentucknob), we decided to stop and have a drink on the terrace of Canary Grill in Berkeley Springs. The day until that moment had gone perfectly - my travelling companions had planned and executed a flawless itinerary, and we arrived at each stop on our route without either rushing or undue waiting around. FLW's creations were masterpieces of design. Even the weather delivered a glorious blue sky day of perfect temperature. We arrived at the Canary Grill in a blissful state. Our one desire was that we be seated under an umbrella, as in the late afternoon the sun beats down on the westward-facing terrace quite ferociously. That was when our day of flawless design crossed paths with a gargantuan design flaw. Our first indication of this was when we stated our request for an umbrella upon arrival at the hostess podium. A deep frown settled into the hostess's face. She told us primly that the umbrellas could be raised if there was no wind. Whereupon she stepped onto the terrace, took measure of its calm, and declared it fit. She then dispatched a waitress to raise the umbrella and seat us. Hurrah! The umbrella, though, had a broken wooden slat, and one side of the canvass drooped like a broken wing, rendering it unfit for service. No problem, we did not mind moving. As we were getting settled at the next table and the umbrella hoisted, a gentle breeze arose and the canvas began to flap. The hostess hurried out and demanded that the umbrella be lowered once more. There followed a stern lecture about how expensive the umbrellas were and further breakage could not be risked. Now we saw the problem - the umbrellas were designed with a side support and crank rather than the usual pole in the middle. While having some aesthetic advantages, the umbrella was now bereft of a central stabilizing feature and the canvass had in effect become a sail, ready to cruise at the slightest breeze. It was left to the unhappy staff to manage this disastrous investment. Reader, I will spare you the details until we finally got situated to the point of being able to order libations. The food was not memorable (some was bad), but we were not too concerned about that. The G&Ts washed away the momentary annoyance, and we were there just to wind down a long day and not looking for a fine dining experience. I write this mainly to point out to the owners of the establishment that the situation is not tenable and is surely multiplied many times over when the terrace is full (we were there during the pre-dinner hour so we were the only table at that time). The staff seemed tense and were rude as a result (I have not recounted other instances of rudeness that occurred during this visit despite how humorous the situation became). And visitors - as lovely as the terrace is, you would do well to design your day to avoid this flap. read more

Not sure why there's so many bad reviews.. Party of 7 for dinner, we had 3 different apps (fried green tomatoes, crab and artichoke dip, and the pretzel with beer cheese) and all different entrees, everything was absolutely delicious! All plates were empty. We sat on the deck which was wonderful, it was a beautiful evening. Our waitress was super friendly and even helped with recommendations on what to get for people that were undecided. We don't go out to eat in a hurry, but the service was not super slow for how busy they were. We were never without a drink, our appetizers came out quickly and we had time to finish them before our entrees came out. Overall a great experience! I hope you don't let the bad reviews deter you from this place. read more

Had our first visit today and were pleasantly surprised with everything. The portions were large and prices were not outrageous. We both got a 32 oz blue moon beer for $9 each (which isn't bad IMO). We got the loaded waffle fries for an appetizer. The only complaint for those were the jalapeños they put on top were dried out fresh cut ones that didn't have much flavor. We tossed most of them. I think ones from jar would be better and softer, etc. I got the Turkey sandwich with Gouda (had bacon and a garlic aioli) and it was delish. I added onion rings to my order and they were the best onion rings I have ever had. My husband got the steak and cheese and chips. He also though it was very good. We ordered some carry out for our family to enjoy as well and it all looked great. We will be back to check it out further. read more

We came in for a long weekend to wonderful Berkeley Springs and had difficulty getting reservations at 2-3 places. We were able to get a table here so we figured we'd try it out! I'm so glad we did! Great menu, place was spacious and clean, servers were busy but friendly. We had the pulled pork nachos, veggie burger (warning: they served a Beyond Burger, which is not the same. I had the short ribs, mashed potatoes and asparagus and it was amazing. If I went back, I'd order the same thing. We had delicious mixed berry margaritas and it was probably the best non-margarita margarita I've ever had. Full of puréed berries yum! Check this place out if you are from out of town but get a reservation. read more

Stopped here on a Sunday night while making a short trip down this way. Had bookmarked this and seeing it was a newer place decided to give it a go. This place seems newly opened and the building newly created - things are still crisp and almost never touched - with grass still growing around sidewalks etc. The place is really designed well- with a large outdoor deck and seating areas inside as well with booths and table seating. One awesome option was in the booth - there are outlets that have USB hookups for charging phones. Well done. The menu is pretty straightforward - appetizers, sandwiches, barbecue, steaks - BUT also has gluten free options like the cauliflower pizza. Would have tried it but opted for straight meat. We shared the 6cheese cheese sticks - which were good but reminded me of just the ones you get in the freezer aisle. I ordered the Chesapeake burger - which comes with a crab cake on top. I ordered without the bun, and it came with homemade chips- I couldn't have them. The burger was properly cooked to medium - but again the burger felt more processed and perfectly shaped etc rather than shaped by hand? Crab cake was pretty small but good. The waitress who was very nice persuaded us into strawberry cake which was massive. Pretty incredible and one of the only desserts that at a price point of $7- was sized perfectly. HOWEVER!!!!!!! THE MAIN ISSUE!!!!! IS THE WIFI!!!!! There is ZERO NADA ZIP NULL service here - which is good seeing as they do have wifi which is free. I connected - and nothing. Turned off my phone. Reconnected. Nothing. Airplane mode for a minute. Reconnected. Nothing. A website I was told is to pop up and to click connect- problem is when it tried? It timed out again bc there was no service and it wasn't connecting to the WiFi yet bc I wasn't able to click the button or get to the website. This has to be fixed. This place should be a gold mine; in this case it is a coal mine:) Wonderful indoor and outdoor seating and with nice views of Berkeley Springs. However, it has gone down hill fast in a few short years! Their service is very slow; despite a few employees busting their humps. The problem is many employees are not working hard. We had a server named Virginia and she was wonderful, but she is in need of some serious help. Then there is the food; it was atrocious. We all looked around the restaurant and it was incredible how many tables were not bused and the amount of food left on every plate; our table included. This was not because of portion size either. Bottom line here is that this place needs new management, many new employees that care, and a new chef. Period! read more

Canary Grill is what you are looking for: a casual but nice place to eat lunch (or dinner) with an extensive but regular menu with room to breathe and friendly servers. It is clearly still "new" and well kept inside and out. I love the colors and design of the place! The booths are nice, the tables are plentiful but spaced out enough so that you aren't right next to your neighboring diners. No shortage of high chairs--or little kids! With that being said, I was there for lunch on a Sunday and though there were plenty of toddlers, there was a business lunch happening simultaneously with no problem; there is plenty of room inside for all. There also is a large deck that I will have to visit in warmer months. I was tickled by the HONEYPOTS sign by the restrooms. That's the sort of detail that brings a lot of charm to a place. It sums up the vibe: modern but comfortable. My family and I will be back! read more
