Excellent place! We went for brunch, but primarily opted for lunch options. We'd describe this as highbrow, sophisticated country cookin'. I had the gumbo, which was so flavorful of crab, mussels, and dirty rice. Others at the table had biscuits and smoked brisket gravy (so unique and delicious). We all got sample tiny biscuit bites, which were all warm and buttery perfection. Service was warm and friendly. We will definite return! read more

We shared the charcuterie plate. Not a typical one. Fried pickles. Catfish, crab salad, slaw and sourkrout. . Also had a goat cheese tart with a generous salad. We over estimated our appetite because that would have been enough. But we also had cornmeal crusted rockfish and barbecue brisket. We had to take a lot of it home, but it was just fine the next day. I think if we were dining in I might have given them all 5 stars. As it was, we were traveling through the area and wanted something not gas food to bring back to the hotel. This place was on a restaurant list provided by the hotel. Yelp said they did carry out and it had great reviews. The chicken pot pie sounded pretty good so we gave them a call. It would be ready quickly so that was a plus. I went in and picked it up, the decor and atmosphere was very nice. I was getting excited for dinner. What caught my attention and why the lower review was that it was frozen and had directions on how to heat it in an oven. I understand why they had to pre cook it because of the way it was cooked, but they could have warmed it up before they served it. We're traveling and had no oven. So, I thawed it out and the heated it in the low powered microwave that was in the hotel room. The food was good, but it would have been nice to know it was frozen. At least I was able to heat it eventually. What if we didn't have a microwave in the room? Since we're traveling and no way to keep it, it would have gone to waste read more

I just wanted to rave about this absolutely amazing gems!! What a great find!! The food was out of this world, every bite was exceptional!! They brought out an amuse-bouche of fiddle head ferns that simply made the eyes role back in your head!! The service was also lackluster and we really didn't see our waitress very often. the food took a long time to come out even though the place was pretty much empty. This is a unique local restaurant with casual Appalachian country vibes and a surprising internationally diverse menu. The service was excellent and our meal included some fun extras along with delicious warm bread and a salad. We shared the crab cocktail and the brisket entree. The brisket was cooked perfectly and sliced very thinly, and the root vegetables it came with were exceptional. Had dinner here with my wife and son. Our meals were great. I had the Rockfish, my wife had the "Mason" sandwich, and my son had the venison patty melt. All three dishes were prepared correctly and tasted fabulous. Our server, Christian did a great job taking care of us. This restaurant is in an old feed store and we enjoyed the rustic atmosphere inside. Not a lot of signage outside so it is easy to pass by, but it is well worth tracking down. read more

We had a beautiful dinner with delicious food, and Lucas was wonderful--friendly, attentive, and did everything he could to make our experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, the service timing was extremely slow. It took more than 45 minutes to receive our drinks, and our meal lasted approximately 2 1/2 hours. When we expressed our concerns, we also mentioned that one of our drinks was not enjoyable. Lucas initially offered to remove it from the bill, but then returned with the same drink and explained that the manager had instructed him not to remove it because we had ordered it. We were disappointed by that response, but even more so when we asked twice to speak with the manager and she refused to come to our table. We were simply hoping to discuss our experience, particularly the unusually long service. A manager's willingness to address guest concerns in person is the entire job, and her refusal to do so left us feeling dismissed. It's unfortunate because the food and our server were excellent, but the manager's handling of the situation overshadowed what could have been a great dining experience. read more

I ordered an Appalachian chopped salad Seared Ribeye Steak medium well, I had the basil mashed potatoes & the green garlic asparagus I tasted the Bavarian Brothers pilsner, I like it but they didn't sell anything lower than a 16 oz So I ordered a grey goose & pineapple. The ambience of this place was very positive. Positive vibes, the servers are all friendly. Lukas my bartender was awesome, very friendly, knowledgeable & answered my questions about the food & I was convinced to try the seared ribeye, it was cooked perfectly the way I wanted it. I'm so glad Yelp steered me in the direction of Alma Bea when I was visiting Shepherdstown a couple of weeks ago, because I had a really great time. Alma Bea is an Appalachian BBQ restaurant, and I couldn't resist the sound of that. I had their vegetarian option (sacrilege, I know), which was a Nashville hot chicken mushroom sandwich. I asked for it extra hot and, although it wasn't spicy AT ALL (maybe they made a mistake and the chef heard no spice?!), it was pretty delicious. Their chips are house-made and were great as well. The side of mac and cheese wasn't my favorite (the cheese split a bit and ended up being quite greasy), but their pies.... WOW - gorgeous and some really interesting (local, regional WV pies on the menu). I had a peach sour beer, which might have been the best fruit sour I've ever had. And the service was outstanding: more than welcoming - I really felt at home. I sat inside and read my book while I enjoyed leisurely meal at Alma Bea, and I was surprised that it wasn't busier (I was there at lunchtime on a Friday, however - maybe it's busier on the weekends or for dinner on weekdays?). They have some outside seating as well that looked really nice on a pretty day. It's also dog friendly and has some WV ambiance (lots of trains passing just nearby as I ate). Overall, it was a really good meal. I'd absolutely have another meal at Alma Bea in the future. read more

After waiting at our table for nearly a half hour watching others get sat and served after us, we had to walk out to find a place that was willing to at least approach us. Granted it was very busy and I was never even provided a wait time upon arrival, it turned out this place had reservations booked and when we checked in we're not asked about having any, but watched each party check in after us get asked if they had a reservation. An absolute gem of a restaurant! This will go down as one of my top meals ever! From the amuse bouche to the last bite everything was delicious. We started our meal with the beef stew hand pies served with a delicious sauce. We then had the cornbread crusted rockfish and the brisket with Mac and cheese. These were sophisticated and elevated takes on Appalachian cuisine. Positively delicious! Our waiter, Christian, was outstanding! He shared the history of the cuisine and the restaurant. Absolutely a hidden gem. Completely unexpected find i stumbled upon. Happy hour 4-5pm ( bar only) dollar oysters and not the run of the mill trash, Maine sourced briny deep shell small flavorful. Wide array of entree options, smoked duck was fantastic. Was recommended the potato pie as desert "like a Reese's cup and Oreo had a kid" and it absolutely delivered. Luke the bartender was engaging, personable and knowledgeable on the menu and recommendation. This is the first time I've ever felt the need to review a restaurant I was so pleasantly surprised. A group of us visited after hearing good things about their bbq. The place smelled very good when we arrived, and the staff were very nice. The location also had a very nice atmosphere. I ordered the brisket, as I always like to try at a bbq joint. It came with Mac and cheese and some root veggies. The Mac and cheese was good. For the brisket, I didn't get a notable smoke flavor and it was sliced thin like lunch meat. I'm not the greatest fan of thin slices brisket, so it threw me off a bit. read more

We apologized for being a little early but the host was very gracious and asked if we wanted to wait or be seated. They were not overly busy and had many empty tables so we elected to sit. Once seated the host advised that our server would be with us shortly. We sat there until 702p with no drink order or even an acknowledgement that we were there. Neat location! Train went by twice during our meal. Fun! The room was large and the tables well spaced so noise level was good. It was kind of dark. Our service left something to be desired. We had plenty of time, but there was way too much time between deliveries. Dessert order was forgotten and we had to flag down another server to get it for us. The bill has an added 3.5% charge for using a credit card so we decided to pay cash. Our server had to go across the street for change when we gave her $100 bill (for a $65+ bill)? Then returned with our change minus $.68... Dessert special- 3 mini pastries for $4 was a deal and delicious!!! One of our party would return. One is on the fence.
