This restaurant delivers on the promise that sadly most of the fine dining establishments in Shepherdstown do not. The food is presented beautifully and totally delivers on taste as well. From the small plates to the large plates to the burgers, we have yet to try something that has not been excellent. I do not mind paying a little more when I know the food will be worth it. The desserts are just as amazing so make sure you leave room and try the potato candy pie. If you are not familiar with potato candy, it is a WV tradition and this dessert represents it so well! I live about 90 minutes away from Shepherdstown but my in laws live there so when we plan a visit we always try to work Alma Bea's into the visit. A true gem of a restaurant, I highly recommend lunch, dinner, take out, or just drinks at the bar. Oh and I shouldn't forget their bakery counter. Amazing treats! All of the food is made thoughtfully with great ingredients, it's hard to recommend just one or two things but if you are there when they have their smoked wings on the menu I promise they will be among the best wings you've ever had. read more

Trying too hard to be 'foodie' while missing the mark on prompt courteous service and just plain good food. The duck meat in the French Onion soup does nothing to improve the flavor. The brisket was way too fatty, we discarded half. The coleslaw on the brisket sandwich made the bun mushy and inedible. And the French Onion tart was a bland custard soaking in the dressing of the accompanying kale salad. The prices are much too high for this lack of quality. No salt and pepper on the table, and exactly one napkin per person. Waitress too busy chatting at the bar instead of serving. We did not get dessert based on our experience with the rest of the food. Absolutely everything we tried was mouthwateringly delicious! We visited on a Wednesday and it was not crowded. The staff was super friendly and the vibe was very chill. We ordered: cocktails, feta stuffed zucchini blossoms (hands down our favorite of the night), bbq pork belly, and rainbow trout, and slices of pie for dessert. West VA always has good food I have not had a bad meal when visiting but this place is amazin, the best food we have ever had, my girlfriend got a flank steak and it melted in your mouth and I had duck and the sauce was good enough to lick the plate. The waitress was very nice she brought a water bowl for our pup. And the place just had an Appalachian feel too it. Highly recommend making the trip from Harpers ferry just to eat here. read more

Wonderful food and service. Never had a meal here that wasn't high quality and delicious. I prefer their dinner menu to their lunch menu so recommend going in the evening. First of all, this doesn't compare at all to the tap house that was located here previously. The improvements are stunning, this place has an appealing atmosphere and is extremely clean. Stephan the server did a great job; although we waited quite a while for someone to seat us. Eventually decided to grab a table and menus after giving up on a hostess/host. The Appalachian chop salad was REALLY GOOD. Greens need more time in the pot as they were too "crisp". The pasta dish that I ordered was dry, and needed a boost of flavor. Went there tonight and the service was so poor we ended up leaving. We were greeted promptly led to a table, given waters and a waiter that said "be right back" waited nearly a half hour, flagged down a server and asked for service and were told "be right with you" but that just didn't happen. What ultimately led to our party of 4 leaving was when other tables walked in behind us and were receiving service. Even just taking our drinks would have sufficed. Having been a server myself I understand the challenges but it's frustrating when there were 4-5 servers standing around and a bartender not doing anything. What makes this a truly one-of-a-kind treat is that their recipes are focused more on Appalachian tradition which gives their take on southern food a bit of a twist and makes me wonder where this has been all my life! The fried chicken dinner is where it's at and be sure to have that one a pepperoni roll. My boyfriend said this was the best pepperoni roll he's ever had. Trust him. I highly recommend finding a different place to eat. Our meals took forever to come out and my meal came out a full 15 minutes after everyone else's and when it did come out it was not even hot. We had to go up front to try to find out where my food was. Everyone was done eating by the time I got my lukewarm food. It was not even appetizing at that point. No one else had hot food either. No compensation at all for the cold late food. And I got the moscat wine and I only got about 2 ounces! Will not be returning. This is one of the worst places I have eaten in a long time. What a great place! We really enjoyed the food. I had the chicken pot pie which was delicious. Our server was Angel and she was delightful and provided excellent service. We were fortunate to meet the owner Mary Ellen Diaz who studied under a Michelin 2 star chef in France. We just returned from spending a month in France and we reminisced about our experiences especially the French food and she shared hers. You can tell her food is prepared with the highest quality and taste. She is so nice we love her! For dessert we had the silk pie and the chocolate mousse filling with whipped cream was exceptional. What a wonderful moment: Welcoming a new restaurant in Shepherdstown! Everything about Alma Bea is superb, from the ambiance, the food, the drink menu and the waitstaff. The restaurant has been beautifully created with an open glassed kitchen and a lovely bar. The menu is not large, but it doesn't have to be. There is something for everyone, including creative bar offerings and an extensive bourbon listing. The flatbread BBQ appetizer was a wonderful start. We had heard about the chicken pot pie so everyone at our table had to order it! It was presented in a steaming iron skillet filled with a succulent chicken/veggie interior and a fabulous crust.
