Maple syrup corn bread

We shared the charcuterie plate. Not a typical one. Fried pickles. Catfish, crab salad, slaw and sourkrout. . Also had a goat cheese tart with a generous salad. We over estimated our appetite because that would have been enough. But we also had cornmeal crusted rockfish and barbecue brisket. We had to take a lot of it home, but it was just fine the next day. This is a really good restaurant that deserves a visit.

The food was good. But was it good for the price? NO. It was special occasion prices for average food. There are much better options in Shepherdstown. We were over $100 for lunch for 2 people. The service was also lackluster and we really didn't see our waitress very often. the food took a long time to come out even though the place was pretty much empty. We looked forward to trying this place because of the reviews but see no reason to return.

This place is a gem. Not sure why it took us a year of being in the area before dining here! Great service, delicious fresh food, spacious dinning, full bar, unique decor. Parking lot (key in Sheppardstown) Gender neutral restrooms A little loud inside. The menu highlights Appalachian cuisine (meals designed to be filling and full of flavor with an emphasis on local, seasonal, and preserved ingredients) What we ate: *Brunswisk stew *Bacon wrapped crabcake with kale and beets *Cast Iron Chicken Pot Pie with potlikker greens *Smoked Baby Back Ribs with spaetzle, bacon & kale, sumac maple apples *Blueberry Tiramisu *Tobassco Pie My rating rationale +1 Service +1 Food~Taste/flavor/quality +1 Presentation +1 Atmosphere/vibe +1 Value

This is a unique local restaurant with casual Appalachian country vibes and a surprising internationally diverse menu. The service was excellent and our meal included some fun extras along with delicious warm bread and a salad. We shared the crab cocktail and the brisket entree. The brisket was cooked perfectly and sliced very thinly, and the root vegetables it came with were exceptional. We finished off with a slice of chocolate silk blackberry pie which was rich and full of flavor. Highly recommend when you want to splurge on a great dinner.

S'mores latte

Super cute inside and out and every dessert looked amazing! I ordered a s'mores latte, the Ram burger, and a slice of berry Fresca pie. All were delicious! The burger was easily within the top 3 best burgers I've ever eaten.

Service: very friendly and professional folks. Great service Ambiance: personal pet peeve - tiny table considering how much space around it. I saw next table over a lady dropped her drink onto floor. They have a lot of glasses, dishes etc. Open dining hall - high ceiling big nice place.! I would do large communal table but don't fit in as many chairs - so you have plenty of space between parties. Sign: great murals painted outside. Tiny sign . Missed it. Food: one of the best tasting dishes. Specialty cornbread, mushroom rolls, we have short ribs and steak. Large plates with creative and very good tasting side dishes. Glazed bourbon roots. Deserts : awesome not too sweet - perfect perfect. We have chocolate fudge cake and key lime pie. Yum.

I'm so glad Yelp steered me in the direction of Alma Bea when I was visiting Shepherdstown a couple of weeks ago, because I had a really great time. Alma Bea is an Appalachian BBQ restaurant, and I couldn't resist the sound of that. I had their vegetarian option (sacrilege, I know), which was a Nashville hot chicken mushroom sandwich. I asked for it extra hot and, although it wasn't spicy AT ALL (maybe they made a mistake and the chef heard no spice?!), it was pretty delicious. Their chips are house-made and were great as well. The side of mac and cheese wasn't my favorite (the cheese split a bit and ended up being quite greasy), but their pies.... WOW - gorgeous and some really interesting (local, regional WV pies on the menu). I had a peach sour beer, which might have been the best fruit sour I've ever had. And the service was outstanding: more than welcoming - I really felt at home. I sat inside and read my book while I enjoyed leisurely meal at Alma Bea, and I was surprised that it wasn't busier (I was there at lunchtime on a Friday, however - maybe it's busier on the weekends or for dinner on weekdays?). They have some outside seating as well that looked really nice on a pretty day. It's also dog friendly and has some WV ambiance (lots of trains passing just nearby as I ate). Overall, it was a really good meal. I'd absolutely have another meal at Alma Bea in the future.

I love this place! Make the drive! I ate here months ago and find myself still thinking about the pie here. It was potato candy pie. The food, people and atmosphere are amazing. This is not to be missed!

Was sat and ignored. Waited 50 minutes to sit because we were out of town and planned to eat here. After waiting at our table for nearly a half hour watching others get sat and served after us, we had to walk out to find a place that was willing to at least approach us. Granted it was very busy and I was never even provided a wait time upon arrival, it turned out this place had reservations booked and when we checked in we're not asked about having any, but watched each party check in after us get asked if they had a reservation. Very odd ... after we left, we found a really good Mexican spot 3 minutes away walking distance. While eating our food, we received a call that our table was available. We laughed and continued eating. Maybe just a bad night for them ...

And we are back. Same great food, same great place. It was an Appalachian food kind of day! Love the welcome and relaxing environment and experience. Good service and lunch.

After checking in, we were quickly guided upstairs to a cozy, rounded booth--an intimate and perfect spot for two. Our server, Katie, was fantastic--attentive, knowledgeable, and refreshingly honest when helping us choose between dishes. We started with the deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes, paired with the Black Sheep Mule and a watermelon cocktail (wish I remembered the name!). For our mains, we ordered the short rib rigatoni and the steak bulgogi bowl. To finish, we shared the weekly dessert special: an Earl Grey tres leches. Everything was exactly what I hoped for and more. The starters were standout, the entrees were packed with flavor, and the overall aesthetic of the space was just beautiful. We'll definitely be back--next time for brunch!

It was also my first time at The Black Sheep but I had always heard wonderful things - all of which turned out to be true. The loft area is beautiful and overlooks the entire restaurant. Also when you reserve the loft, which holds up to 16 people, you order off the regular menu. I loved this as other places I checked into were much more restrictive with a higher minimum spend and fixed menus for groups larger than 8. We had 12 in our group. We started with a bunch of appetizers for the table and cocktails. Appetizers included the bacon tower, fried green tomatoes, hushpuppies, crispy chicken wings, and Mediterranean garlic shrimp. Dinner entreés were jambalaya pasta, the American wagyu burger, pulled short rib rigatoni and branzino almondine. There were zero complaints. We enjoyed EVERYTHING!! The bourbon butter cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert literally took me over the top. My belly was ready to burst :) Our waiter was attentive throughout the entire time and everything we ordered came out perfect. I must go back soon. It is a distance from where I live but there's so many things on the fabulous menu I want to try.

The atmosphere was one of the best parts of the experience. The music was great, people were singing, and the whole place felt fun, relaxed, and like somewhere you genuinely want to spend time. The hostess was wonderful, and our server, Trinity, was extremely friendly, helpful, and welcoming. She genuinely seemed to enjoy what she was doing, and that made the experience even better. We started with drinks at the table, and both were excellent. The Washington's Rebellion Cherry Bounce was memorable and very well done, and the house smoked old fashioned was also delicious. We then had the Roasted Brussels, and they were absolutely amazing. The combination of honey, balsamic glaze, candied pecans, and parmesan was outstanding. For the main course, I had the Powderhorn Chop, and the flavor was very good. My only critique is that it would have benefited from a stronger sear and a bit more crust on the outside. A little more Maillard reaction, that browning of proteins and sugars that creates deeper savory complexity, would have elevated it even further. We also had a salmon special that evening, and that was outstanding. Dessert was another highlight, especially the warm pecan bourbon pie with ice cream, which was absolutely delicious. Service was a major strength. In addition to Trinity being so warm and attentive, other staff members, including management, came by to make sure everything was going well. We also appreciated that they offer a military discount. This was our first time here, and so far it is the best restaurant we have tried in the Berkeley Springs area. We were told they are expanding, and we are already looking forward to coming back, especially if outdoor seating is added in the future. This feels like exactly the kind of place we will return to often, especially when friends come to visit.

We made reservations since we were a group of 6 including 2 infants, and these were warranted as the restaurant progressively filled up as we got closer to peak brunch hours. We were offered a large booth, which was appreciated as we needed space for the babies. The food here tasted quite good. My wife ordered the Pork Belly Benedict, which offered tender-crisp, thick slices of braised pork belly atop soft, buttery focaccia and coated with well poached eggs and creamy hollandaise. We both highly enjoyed my Broadlands Breakfast Sandwich, a clever take on a standard bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich swapping crispy, perfectly sweet French toast for standard bread. The breakfast potatoes served alongside were crispy on the outside with fluffy interiors and good seasoning. Our friends enjoyed their sandwiches as well. As the name alludes, the drink program is strong and offers something for everyone. In addition to wine and whisky, a solid selection of both cocktails and draft beers are available. Prices for both food and drinks were quite reasonable given the quality of what we received. I do dock a star for just so-so service. Our waitress was a bit MIA during the first part of our meal when we were trying to order, and then kept checking in on us every 5 minutes once our food arrived. We also had to remind her a few times to get a high chair for our little one. Fortunately, the food and drinks all arrived accurately and within a timely manner once ordered. Service woes aside, the creative fare satisfied our taste buds and we look forward to returning soon for to sample more of the brunch menu and libations.
