Dr. Tran did an eye exam for me. Honestly, I think that he might be a nice person but he doesn't come across that way. He talks over you and is very fast. Some have called it efficient. I wouldn't. I'd echo the positive reviews here. Booking: I called first thing in the morning, got a same day appointment on Saturday. Exam: I've had glasses for 29 years and gone to an optometrist every year. I have never had an optometry both so efficient and so thoroughly descriptive (he said assessments aloud during the exams). I was in and out in 20 minutes with a constant prescription. I got information than I've gotten in optometry exams twice that length, although more complex stuff belong at an ophthalmologist's office. Caution: parking in difficult here on weekends. It involves contending with lots of folks and cars in the shopping area and keeping track of parking slips for validation. read more

I just got home from my second appointment with Dr. Tran. I will keep coming to him until I drop dead. Like some of the other reviewers, I value efficiency over all else when I'm at the eye doctor. I hate waiting for 30+ minutes at other optometrists. Not a problem here. Never had to wait more than about 2 minutes. You see, Dr. Tran values efficiency himself. (Although he isn't affiliated with Costco, this is the mentality I associate with the store.) I don't have any serious eye problems and I don't ask a lot of silly questions. I'm happy with my contact lenses, and just need to get a new prescription every year. If that sounds like you, stop wasting your money and head over to Costco. What bothers me are reviews saying Dr. Tran is gruff, mean, or otherwise lacking in service skills. No. He simply is not full of BS. He gets straight to the point and dispenses with small talk. Fine by me, especially during a pandemic when we're supposed to be limiting our contact with others. Should I develop serious optical issues that require a "lighter touch" on service, I might consider another doctor. Until then, I will return to Dr. Tran every year for a quick, easy, and inexpensive appointment. read more

NOT PREMIER: I first overlooked the fact that Dr. Nhut Tran is bizarrely socially awkward and rude, but in the end my patience and understanding was rewarded with a bad Rx and a waste of my time. I have owned my eyes for 51 years and have been wearing glasses for 40 of those years. Yet, Dr. Tran was so manic and careless during my "exam" that he ignored everything I told him. Over and over again, during the visit, I had to remind him several times of what I had just said, what my issues and history are, and what I needed. The result: he rushed me out of there with an Rx that was inaccurate and unusable. I, then, had to call and deal with this clown and his optical circus AGAIN by phone just to get him to re-write his Rx and change it back to the original Rx I walked in with from my previous real doctor. I know this guy isn't an Opthamologist, but still even an Optomitrist should have enough education and basic training to get a contact Rx correct. Some reviews claim Dr. Tran is "efficient," but all I witnessed was an insane rush that was a complete waste of my time. See yourself to a better doctor with more experience that can get it right the first time. I have come to see Dr. Tran for 5 years. He is an awesome and efficient optometrist! The pricing of the exam has been unbeatable for me, and he does not pressure you to make purchases through Costco or any other place which I appreciate. I saw another optometrist once for my concerns and all they did was try to pressure me into buying extra things at an insane markup! If you are anxious about your eye exam or need a bit more attention, this may not be the best fit. I guess that would be the trade off of price vs service- although in my experience, there is nothing to be upset about with the service. Because it's only him (and sometimes an assistant), he is very quick with the exam. However, he is still very happy to answer questions or give further guidance. On my past few two visits I have asked him additional questions about my candidacy for LASIK and he has given me thorough answers. read more

This is where it's at for eye exams. $65 will get you in and out in about 15 minutes. I would recommend an appointment as it is probably busy after work and weekends. You then just mosey on next door to Costco for reasonably priced glasses. Seems like a win to me. These folks are not Costco employees despite their optometry practice being on the exterior of Costco across from the tire center. You don't need a Costco membership to get an exam. read more

While technically distinct businesses, this is the Costco Optometrist and you are going to get Costco level service. Its no frills. And it tends to be very good. I have gone to Dr Tran for... I think it must be six years. Three different prescriptions. I thought he was very excellent. He is no frills. He does his own appts, his own check outs. It is sort of in - take the exam - out. Every time has been very positive. The prescription I received worked very well. It can feel a little like an assembly line. But again, this is Costco no frills. If you need hand holding, you might want to go somewhere else and pay more. The reason why I am writing this review is bc I was looking for his phone number - trying to set up my next appointment. After knocking, the receptionist answered and informed me that the doctor had cancelled my appointment without warning "so he could eat lunch." Super efficient service! I was so impressed with how quickly Dr. Tran was able to check my eyes and send me on my way with a new prescription. The price is a fraction of what I've paid at other eye doctors in Arlington and I thought the service was good. It's definitely a "no frills" experience, but perfect if you just need a quick eye exam to update your contacts/glasses prescription. I have terrible vision that seems to continuously get worse, and Dr. Tran was great about answering any questions/concerns I had about my eyes. This Doctor is horrible and mean to patients. Went there had an eye exam for contact lenses i told him i would use the daily contacts instead he gave me a prescription for daily contact lenses. I went to buy at the mall were to expensive went back to DR tran yo get a prescription for weeklys instead. He yelled at me in fromt of his assistant and made me feel really stupid told me next time i needed to make up my mind. I didnt say anything because i needed the prescription. However, as soon as i got home blocked his office number so i dont receive their yearly reminders and found someone who values my money and me as a patient. I wish i could go back in time i would say something to him that would have make him cry. anyways, avoid him at all cost. I never leave bad reviews but the gentleman working was so rude I had to leave one. I do not recommend going to this location. When making an appt it was not told that there is a VERY STRICT 10 minute policy and if you are even a minute late they will NOT see you. He then acted like me asking to reschedule was the craziest thing he had ever heard. There is also a rescheduling fee. Incredibly rude and made me so uncomfortable I decided to leave. If you do choose to come here, make sure you give yourself more than 20 minutes to park because he is not considerate in the slightest. read more

Dr. Tran is efficient but that is about it. He hurries the patient along and acts as if you're just another person to get through so he can collect his payment. This would have earned him 3 stars but I faced the rudest response when I asked to have my prescription sent to me electronically - email or text. Both of these methods are legal for eye prescriptions and I have received them from other optometrist. His response was that it could only be faxed because they don't have an email address. Seriously? An independent business without an email address?I don't believe in 2018 there is anyone with a business who doesn't have email. I imagine this is purposeful, so that he doesn't have to email prescriptions. It would take away from this patient throughput time from 10.5 minutes to 12 if he had to email prescriptions. read more

I do appreciate Costco but I take issue with other reviewers--particularly the pregnant lady standing in the rain while he turned his back and would not open the door. I find his only interest is getting you in and out and collecting his fee. However, my main complaint is pure incompetency. My last examination was not my first with Dr. Tran. They could not find records of my former exam until I was ready to leave. Then I found myself with a prescription which was illegible and did not even contain adequate information, i.e. He does not even bother to measure the pupilary distance (PD) which all prescriptions should contain. I will be ordering my glasses from the web and they could not process the order because the prescription was both illegible and incomplete. Needless to say, I will find another doctor for my next examination and I will advise my family to not go back either. read more

Dr. Tran gave me my best prescription I have had in a long time. I can see so much better with the prescription Dr Tran wrote for me. My husband also agreed with me that his prescription from Dr.Tran is much better than our previous Doctor. When I first Dr. Tran I thought his demeanor was rude because he is in a hurry. After observing him with my son, husband and myself, he runs the office by hisself and still provided us with our best prescriptions. Thank you Dr. Tran we all can see so much better now. read more

Several other reviews here are right on. If you're the kind of person who appreciates the prices, quality, and efficiency of CostCo itself, you'll be happy with Dr Tran (as I am). Dr Tran is efficient. His office is tiny; no staff besides himself. He explains exactly what he's doing and answers questions thoroughly and accurately. If you're not comfortable with a doctor whose motions are a blur and with whom your appointment will be finished before you realize it, he may not be the best choice for you. But he exudes confidence and as long as you're comfortable asking questions you'll get all the info you want. I went in for a contact lens exam/prescription (I paid cash) and am in the process of a LASIK referral (to TLC in Tysons Corner) which will involve another pre-op screen at Dr Tran's office soon. read more

I have gone to Costco Eye doctors for the last 5 years. I lived in Fairfax and the Fairfax Costco has always been great about giving me a trial pair of contacts when I am in between orders. I have done this 2 times in five years and there has never been an issue. Now that I live in Arlington I went to the Arlington Costco and asked if they could help me because I am out of contacts. Instead of looking at this as a great opportunity to win a new customer he decided to inform me that they are all INDEPENDENT eye doctors. I asked if they could call the other office and confirm my prescription to which he told me that they just can't give trial pairs of contacts to random strangers. RANDOM STRANGERS....indeed. Needless to say, I would rather travel 30 min away then to go the eye doctor that is right across the street. read more

Efficient, straightforward pricing and professional service. If you are an on time person and impatient,like myself, this is the place for you. We have never waited. We have received a same day appointment at times. Dr. Tran is kind and compassionate. He is also a veteran. The prices are reasonable for even those without insurance. This is a good place to go to if you have little time, say you are at work and need to take time off for an appointment. If you are nearby, you could probably be back in under an hour (I have done it). Perfect package for a practice. I forgot to add, they are extremely practical with appointment times and if someone cancels, they are good about calling you up to see if you would like to come in. read more

The people working at the vision center was actually quite nice and took their time with me. I would definitely give them 5 stars however Dr.Tran deserves 0 and if possible a rating in the negatives. He lacks basic customer service skills I made a mistake but his outrage was uncalled for. I don't expect him to jump through hoops for me but at least some basic decency.I legitimately thought he was going to hit me in the examination room. He only cares about the money not about the customer. I don't know what's going on in his personal life but he needs to leave that anger at home. As long as you don't get on his bad side you should be fine but don't expect any kindness either. You'll just make it out alive. I had annual exam with Dr. Tran today, and have been seeing him for years - I have bad myopia AND astigmatism since childhood, and have been going to eye docs my whole life. I am a medical doctor with long career in medicine, engineering, and science. Previous Yelp complaints say Dr. Tran is fast - he is unique that he can be fast AND technically among the best. I understand medically and scientifically everything he is doing and he doesn't miss a step - his dance is perfect for those who can keep time. Those who do not understand medicine and science, will be more assured by docs with minimal technical skills + hand holding and skilled talking performance which will not result in the best vision. Dr. Tran goes fast because he has to, in post-Obamacare world, that is the only business model that will keep doctor from going bankrupt and/or fired, and he does it fast and with technical perfection, in contrast to most doctors these days. read more

After going to MyEyeDoctor for years and dancing through the choreographed sales pitches, I was happy to be in and out in 15 minutes, with not one but two sets of contact lenses to try at home. The appointment was a little over $100, which I was able to pay for with my HSA account (Doctor does not take insurance). Will come back next year! read more

This was my first and last time to see this doctor. I asked him for my PD and he told me someone would measure it if I bought the glasses in store. RUDE and MEAN I used to go to this location to get an eye exam for about three years since i lived close by. I never had an issue until I went for an eye exam and the doctor asked me if i want it a prescription for daily or every two weeks contact lenses. at the time, I said daily when i went to the mall i realized the daily contact lenses were too expensive so I went back to the doctors office to ask for a biweekly prescription he yelled at me in front of his secretary and told me next time i needed to make up my mind and i was wasting his time. I didnt say anything because I needed the prescription, but i went home blocked his number so they dont call me every year and remind me of my exam and decided to take my 130 dollars to pentagon city mall. If you have a business you need to treat your customers right especially when there is so much competition in this area. i rather pay more money than deal with his attitude. read more

This is a bit of a mixed review. On one hand, the office was clean, I showed up early to my appointment and the staff was waiting for me and they were by and large very nice. But at the same time, I felt rushed through the exam and I did not get the impression that the Doctor really cared about me or my eyes. Called ahead of time to verify insurance and chose this doctor based upon that. Went in to find a gentleman dressed as the receptionist who turned out to be the doctor. I have been to a few other costco independent doctors and this one was the most awkwardly located office with no inside entrance. In any event, the doctor was reasonable but not helpful. He denied the insurance and said either pay cash or wait till he looks up insurance. We asked him to look it up and he said "well I don't take insurance." We were leaving when he said "ok i'll check tonight and let you know-- I dont have a computer in the office." What a waste. We just paid cash and got reimbursed from our insurance. When I didn't have eye insurance, I came to Dr. Tran a few times. He was efficient in the exam and got the job done--exactly what I needed. I moved out of the DC area recently and needed my prescription to order new glasses. He again, efficiently and effectively, got the job done by faxing the prescription within 20 minutes of my request. I called Mr. Tran who did the exam and he said very curtly that they do not do that, that I would have to go to another optician. I said I thought that was misleading. Bottom line -- Dr Tran does cares more about getting your money than actually providing a positive customer service experience or showing common consideration. I showed up 10 minutes early for a 10am appt because there was a severe thunderstorm warning in the area. Dr Tran was in the office, lights on, answering the phone and saw me try the locked door. Did he even acknowledge me? Not at all, he turned around, sat down with his back to me and continued with his conversation. Keep in mind, winds were high outside and it was beginning to rain. When I saw him hang up, I gently knocked. No response. I called him from my phone and asked to come inside. He got up, marched over and said "Dude, we don't open until 10." (I am a 6 month pregnant woman) I asked if there was a waiting area as the weather was awful. He replied that he would not let me in. I told him to cancel my appt and he said "Thank you!" This is the second and last time I'll go to Dr Tran. If you chose to own and operate a business then there should be a reasonable expectation of delivering minimal customer service. Why on earth would I ever give someone any of my hard earned money if they can't give me a place to sit when the weather is bad outside? Common decency and bed side manner were completely neglected because Dr Tran couldn't be bothered.
