Went to these folks for a few years because they were covered by my insurance. Turns out I would have paid less for contacts if I hadn't used my insurance. I've had to go back multiple times to get copies of prescriptions for glasses and contacts and every single time they have given me the WRONG one. Now they don't even have a live person answering phones. And after you get there you'll find out they are going to charge you $39 for a retinal image even if that has nothing to do with your issue. The two stars are for the actual optometrist. She was nice and my exam went fine. The shop is fine. Nothing special. Not a huge selection of designer glasses. Your typical cookie cutter optometry place. You're going to pay full retail price for designer frames and maybe get a deal on the lenses. I'll probably stick to just replacing the lenses in my frames I already have. I'd say 1.5 stars for the glasses people. I ordered a pair of glasses and lenses a few weeks ago. I called 2 days ago and was told I'd be given a call back for an update. Well that didn't happen. So today I call. She takes my name and says, "let me check for you". Aaaaaand there goes 20mins on hold. Should've hung up earlier, but I wanted to see if I could make it from 495 to Shirlington without an answer. I had a nasty eye infection. Dr. AnnMarie DeSando diagnosed me as such on Tuesday at 2:30PM and prescribed an eye medication. She seemed an excellent doctor. The trouble came when the local CVS explained the med was not available within 50 miles. CVS told Dr DeSandro's office at 3PM on Tuesday that she needed to write an alternative prescription. I called her office around the same time and made the same request. The front desk respondent told me that they would prefer to find the original medicine "through their agents" than to prescribe an equivalent remedy. Offput, and fearing incentive structures from pharma may be affecting my care, I told him as long as I can get it tonight, fine, but otherwise I need the alternative medicine, which is available now, to be prescribed. I was assured CVS would contact my with my new prescription that evening. They did not. I left a voice mail at 4PM on Wed that went unanswered. By Thursday morning, I called the office frustrated. I needed help and simply was not getting it. Halfway through my story, the insolent young lady that answered the phone decided to talk through me. I eventually hung up on her as she ironically screamed into the phone that was excellent at customer service. The doctor called me Thursday by lunch. She was professional and apologetic. But there are SERIOUS communication issues within the staff that works the office at 3012 Wilson. They will cost the future company business if uncorrected. read more

Dr. DeSando is amazing - thorough, friendly and knows her stuff. I've been coming here a few years and never had any issues until this year. I noticed my vision insurance claim info said I should have paid $150 less than I was charged for glasses I purchased at their office. I called to ask for a review of my bill due to the discrepancy. Over the past 2 weeks, I've called multiple times and been told I'll get a call back before the end of the day. So far I've heard nothing. They definitely try to upsell you into expensive frames but not even returning phone calls is ridiculous. As much as I'll miss Dr. DeSando, there are plenty of other options in Clarendon. read more

Incredibly awful office. Wouldn't recommend coming here. I waited almost THREE MONTHS to get my prescription glasses. They lost my frames and I had to replace them with different frames. They tried to blame my insurance. Luckily, they paid for them but that doesn't make up for the fact that I really loved my original frames and they were designer. Really disappointed, it shouldn't take that long to receive prescription glasses. I need them to see. This is the most incompetent medical office I've ever been to in my life. They have now ordered the wrong contact prescription for me THREE times now and blatantly lied to me multiple times about how long it would take to get my glasses prescription updated (I eventually found out the delay was because they forgot to place the order for the updated lenses to begin with). The reception staff does not answer the phone and will never return calls. Plus in the off chance you get a hold of them, they are absolutely clueless and are unable to answer any questions, even with basic things that should be written in patient records. I have liked the two doctors I've seen, but that's useless if the staff doesn't actually order the proper prescription or communicate. It was also extremely frustrating last visit when I did not have glasses or contacts in, but the employee kept trying to make physical gestures instead of speaking, even after I repeated said I am unable to see anything they are doing without glasses/contacts. She even had the nerve to get mad at me for asking her to give her instructions out loud because I can't see anything. How does someone work for an eye doctor and get mad that people have bad eye sight without any corrective lenses in? Find someplace else to see an eye doctor, anywhere else. More than two months ago I got an eye exam here at the Clarendon location, then I ordered a pair of prescription sunglasses, paid and left. They said the glasses would be ready in two weeks. After four weeks of calling and waiting I told them to cancel my order, I didn't want to keep waiting. They blamed it on my insurance company and said they placed the order and they were just waiting on the lab. My husband stopped in maybe a week later, and said we would just like a refund. They told him there was nothing they could do. I've called a number of times since then, asking for a manager, and they told me they'll have to get back to me. Apparently she was out sick for several weeks. Today I was nearby during business hours and popped in and caught up with the manager in person. She said she is still waiting on the lab to send my glasses, and she showed me some screen with yellow numbers everywhere. I couldn't tell what she was showing me, but she was indicating that they were just waiting on the lenses to come back. I said I want my money back. She said she would "see what she can do" and would let me know by the end of the week. I called my insurance provider today to complain and ask them to remove this company from their preferred providers, to reinstate my allowance for lenses for this year, and help me get my money back. My insurance called the visual health office, and the manager at this location told them they've been trying to call me for weeks to get my glasses to me. Reminder, I was there just this morning in the office in person speaking with the manager who showed me some screen trying to indicate that it was a lab's fault. So clearly they are dishonest on top of being inept and dismissive. read more

I would NOT recommend this establishment as they have questionable practices. Read below for more details. I purchased a Groupon voucher for which I paid $49 for a complete eye exam at this location. Just to be certain the voucher for $49 truly included everything that accompanies a routine eye exam, I called their phone number and asked if there was anything not included, to which they said no. In order to be certain, I asked if the amount paid also covered eye dilation, to which the person on the other side of the line said yes. This was very important to me as eye dilation is an important step in ensuring yours pupils widens so that the doctor can see the back of your eyes for any potential issues. As I arrived at this location for my exam, however, I was informed that they would "check with the doctor if I had to pay extra for dilation." Granted, my exam was done without the eye dilation. I suspect this is a cost-cutting effort on their part. Had I been told about this in advance, I would have simply chosen to go elsewhere. The attendant lied and said eye dilation was included when, in fact, it was not. In sum, this location's business practice is very shady. They will lie to you and try to overcharge you for things that are supposed to be included in the amount paid. 1 star out of 5 stars! read more

Dr. AnnMarie DeSando - Outstanding Eye Doctor I had an eye exam with Dr. DeSando today. I visit an eye doctor annually and Dr. DeSando is the BEST eye doctor I have seen. She is very calm and easy to talk to. She asked me all the relevant questions regarding my eyesight. She's very thorough and also allowed me to ask questions. The entire visit was pleasant from the time I walked Into the office. The staff in the reception area was friendly, courteous and efficient. This place has such good service and is so prompt. For my most recent eye exam, the staff started testing my peripheral vision and took optics of the inside of my eyes (painless machine tests, basically) at my appointment time and only a few minutes after that, I was talking with the doctor and reading little charts to her. I feel that the staff and doctor really listen to and discuss my concerns. Since macular degeneration runs on both sides of my family, having a doctor paying attention to any changes in my eyes and listening to my concerns is very important to me! So far, so good, but the doctor laid out a plan to monitor my eyes over time (she can because I had the eye photos taken), and gave me proactive steps I can take to maintain the health of my eyes (vitamins and sunglasses, ya'll). The appointment took very little time and I felt cared for the entire time. The office worked with me to pick out a lovely pair of glasses frames on a previous occasion, and this time, we added blue screen filters to my lenses for all the time I sit in front of my computer. The glasses came back very quickly and pick up was a breeze. While I had FSA funds left at the end of the year to spend on the computer glasses and the eye photos, the check-in sheet made very clear where patients can elect not to spend money, which I appreciate. I highly recommend this office for your visual care. read more

DO NOT USE THIS PRACTICE! It is a scam. The Rx was good and the optometrist very professional. The problem is when you order glasses. They are SUPER expensive (3 to 4 times more than ordering online). But the WORST part is how they treat their customers. They told me my lenses would be ready in 10 days. After a month, I went in several times. They won't tell you the truth. They say things like "tech gone home so I will call you tomorrow". They do not call. I go back every week and each time they just tell me the lab is closed or something. After two months, I went in and asked for my $1000 back. By then, I went and got glasses elsewhere (at less than HALF the cost!) They explain only the office manager can do that and she will call you in 30 minutes. No call. I go back again and they promise the manager (Zee Noor) will call. She did call and left a message that they might be able to make my glasses but nothing about getting any money back. read more

I came in for a check up and ordered glasses and contacts. The glasses were delivered on time, and though did not fit well, they were fine. The contacts, however, never arrived. I ordered them in April and it's now July. I've called several times and when someone takes my call, they tell me they're still waiting. Most often, no one takes my call or responds to any inquiries. Not even worth one star. Terrible, cold, unfriendly attitude! Will never return again. There are so many eye doctors and stores around (at least 3). Do NOT choose this one. They are a small neighborhood eye glasses place that offers very limited selection of frames. Doctor is fine, but the staff are terrible. 1. Wait time is long. 2. Store is very small, so the frames they have are limited. 3. I had my eye exam and ordered a year's worth of contact lenses. I specifically asked them to ship them to my home address. They not only did not ship them (lenses were shipped to the store) but also did not even bother to call me when the contact lenses arrived in their store. I had to call them to chase up. Their attitude was terrible. No apology for their mistake. Cold. They tried to get me to go into the store to pick them up even on the phone. It was their mistake in the first place. Eventually they said they would ship it to me, but it could take 5 days. Sorry you just lost a loyal customer. And I rarely write negative reviews. This is my first 0-star review on Yelp as a Yelp Elite. I have nearly 300 reviews and 10000 photos here. Convenient location next to Clarendon metro. Horrible client service. I ordered a year supply of contacts on 9/29/2020. After re-ordering, and speaking to the front desk several times, it's February 2021 and I still have no contacts. I rarely feel compelled to write a review, especially a bad one, but after having the same bad experience twice, it seemed necessary to warn others of the poor customer service at this office. Last year, I waited over 30 minutes for my appointment (I had scheduled my appointment and wasn't a walk-in, so this seemed a little unreasonable). I didn't think it was fair to judge the practice by one instance, which may have been a fluke, so I scheduled an appt again this year. Yet again, I was left waiting more than 20 minutes past my scheduled appt to be seen by the doctor, despite arriving early. Noticing that I wasn't likely going to be taken back soon, I had inquired w/ the front desk about the status and it was only then that I was given an update (that it would be more around 6 that i'd be seen instead of 5:30, the time of my scheduled appointment). Given that the office was 20+ minutes late, it would've been appropriate for the front desk to let me know initially--it's basic customer service. Having dealt with timeliness issues for two years in a row now, it's unlikely that I'll come back. I understand things happen, but at this point I don't want to give my business to a company that doesn't respect my time the same way I do theirs. The doctor was fine, I don't really have complaints, but it's evident the office is mismanaged at worst and lacking customer service at best. read more

I LOVE my new glasses! Staff was amazing and 100% professional and they are open until 7 PM! They price match with online prices, so I bought my contacts with them. They had a $89 Groupon deal for a contact and eye appointment (AMAZING deal), and the Optometrist really took her time and gave me multiple contact lense samples. The eye exam included a eye dilation, which is nice because some places will charge you extra. I will be returning next year to get my eyes checked, due to the awesome service! If you aren't into designer frames you could go online and find a pair of cheaper glasses, but you are paying for the service and brand name frames! What you can expect to Pay: If you want to save money get monthly contacts versus daily and type in Google cheapest contacts for whatever brand name you are looking for. As I said above they price match with online prices you just have to show them the link. I paid around $80 for one year of contacts. As far as glasses are concerned you can expect to pay between $130 + for the frames, $150 plus for the lenses (more for high index ect), and then you will want to pay for a protective coating (UV, glare, ect). If you are on a budget or you don't have eye insurance and want to spend under $100 you may want to consider buying glasses online. As I stated before, you are paying for designer frames and convenience. I buy glasses every five years, so I am willing to splurge a little :). read more

Conveniently located steps from the Clarendon metro (with convenient Saturday 9-5pm hours too), this eye care spot has got everything. It is clean, modern, sleek, convenient, and oh so friendly! The welcoming smile and friendly words of Kat - the woman behind the front door - is like none other. She is an absolute pro! I had anticipated that picking out my new frames would take about an hour, but she had me in a pair that I absolutely LOVED in less than 10 minutes!! And she did the entire thing with a smile and a great personality. I have to say, I didn't quite know what to do with myself for the next 50 minutes before my dinner reservations around the corner! She was also so helpful with my insurance, explanation of benefits/expenses, and overall questions and concerns. Been coming here for the past couple of years. The optometrists are generally good and friendly, thus not giving one star. But the sales/office staff and the customer service, esp from this past visit, has been terrible: - I ordered glasses during my recent visit in mid- November. They needed to order the frames from Rayban, which the sales rep says may take a little longer, so instead of 2 weeks, would be about 3-4 weeks. - a month go by, I follow up, and they don't know the status--not in their system, will have to check, could be in this next shipment, will let me know. Didn't hear back. - another 3 weeks later, I follow up in person. Still don't know status. Their store manager says oh I don't know who you last spoke time, not sure if they called the factory...I tell her I spoke w her last, and she responds oh then I MUST have followed up and they were not ready. That's interesting, bc I certainly didn't hear from you. She then promises that she will for sure follow up on Monday, and give me a call on Monday. Does anyone call? Of course not. - another week later, I'm calling again to get status. It's been more than 2 months. I am waiting for a call back. I won't hold my breath. Also had issues w/ insurance and FSA. Insurance automatically submitted claim to FSA for my out of pocket expenses, but was less than what I actually paid. The statement from insurance doesn't match what was on my itemized receipt. Called Visual Heath to figure out what to do, and their response is (1) it's my fault bc I should have not had my insurance submit the claim (but that's how all of my insurances handle and I've never had an issue before), and (2) it's my insurance's fault bc they billed it incorrectly, and (3) I have to go figure it out with insurance and FSA. Visual Health Doctors is super convenient and located where I frequent. I needed a place where I can depend on for instant, accurate and no nonsense service. I needed to get my eyes checked and another years worth of contacts. Upon stepping into the door, I was greeted with warm smiles and a great facility. Dr. John Du was the optometrist on shift that day and started my check up. He was effective, efficient and a great "people" person. After my check up, I told him I wanted to order my contacts online because I wanted to save some money. (I had a bad experience with my previous optometrist really overcharging me for contacts.) Dr. Du, was fully supportive and even gave me a few samples to hold me over till my order of contacts came in. When I put in my order with the website later on that day, they contacted Dr. Dr and he promptly approved my order within 15 minutes. I was surprised at how quick it was! Within 4 days, my contacts were in. Im glad I went to Visual Health Doctors and visited Dr. Du. My experience with them went without a hitch and it definitely saved me money on contacts. read more

My worst experience with an optometrist so far, very unprofessional office. I was upsold on a pair of contacts with the promise of a rebate promotion, and after purchase the problems began. They kept forgetting about my shipment of contacts, and I had to call several times to make sure they had ordered it and would contact me when they got it. Then they either lied about the rebate being automatic, or Acuvue conveniently changed their rebate policy to being mail-in, and I was never told and was left for months wondering what to do. So now my rebate is invalid, and I was essentially upcharged on a pair of contacts on an empty promise. read more

Run from this place at all costs. If you have an appointment for this office, then cancel it. After two visits, I have learned my lesson and never come again, even if the office is a 3 minutes walk away. They are just money hurry and lack customer service. They billed me twice for the same visit. I paid upfront after my appointment, and they still billed my health insurance company for the same visit. I went to them and told them that you double bill me and you are required to refund me since you bill my insurance. It's been almost an entire month trying to receive my refund. He got a pair from here and was told the glasses would be shipped to him. Since then, we've called this place multiple times and been always told "the glasses would be shipped tomorrow". How many "tomorrow" do they need to truly take action? This is beyond ridiculous. They promise all good service when you pay money out the pocket and then don't give it a s**t. Purchased a Groupon ($19 towards $200). Not a single frame was less than $189 (there goes your Groupon right there) and the lenses started at $130 for your basic low strength, full glare style lens. Selection was fine but nothing stand out or exceptional. The ambiance was clean and cozy. Service was straight forward and low-pressure. But here's why I'm holding back on a third star: because I didn't want to buy their pricey lenses, I was told I could only use $100 of my $199 Groupon. I'll be circling back with Groupon to check on the validity of Visual Health's couponing theory but so far as I can tell, the Groupon's details made no mention of having to purchase the full package - with lenses - in order to redeem the full coupon value. It simply states, "Valid only toward new glasses." Well, I don't need lenses, just glasses. Shady. Erg. They obviously were using the Groupon to attract new business. Glasses are expensive (Captain Obvious to the rescue!). Still, I shop around, so in spite of my superhigh Rx, I've never paid more than $150 for a pair of glasses. Visual Health ended my cheapo streak. I scooped up a BuyWithMe deal--$20 for $200 towards prescription glasses. Once I picked out some frames, though, all the frugalista vibes vanished: a pair of glasses BEFORE all the optional lens coatings (anti-glare, scratch resistant, etc) was $400. With the coatings, it topped $600. Think twice before you buy a voucher to this place; their mark ups are so high you're not going to get much of a discount. And if you don't have a coupon, you might want to google around--I track Groupon and it's deal-a-likes closely, and Visual Health offered vouchers through several different sites over a three month period. There's a reason their frames don't have price tags. Even with perfect vision, you're not gonna see these prices coming. The selection is limited for most comparable optometrists, and disappointingly uniform at that (very 'Washingtonian' i.e. boring). read more

This was my first visit to an eye doctor since having moved to Arlington in February. I was nervous because it wasn't going to be my usual optometrist back in Florida. The eye doc who took care of me was really sweet and answered all of my questions. It was an overall happy experience with her. So why the 3 star and not 5? This has to do with the check out. I wasn't even quite sure I had solid vision insurance so I was going to use their $99 promotion which covered the glasses and contacts exam. Sweet right? Well the girl at the desk suggested I check my insurance anyway to see what they offered. I ended up paying $116 and that included a 15% discount offered by the insurance. That's strange... So when I got home I looked over the bill and then called another location to ask about the promotion vs the insurance. She told me flat out that I should use the promotion because it's a better deal. Why is this annoying? Well I definitely showed some apprehension at check out because I couldn't understand why paying more made sense - it doesn't. I promptly called the location back and explained my concern and recalled the conversation I had with their other location. The girl was noticeably agitated on the other end of the phone. The bubbly demeanor that she had given off at the office was now gone and it was clear that she wasn't happy with me. Compensation. I only wanted to get charged what I was intending to. She was nice enough to offer me a 3 month supply of the contacts I was going to order for free to make up for, which I was more than grateful for. I only wish she hadn't sounded so annoyed about it. This is an isolated incident and I don't want anyone to stray away from visiting them because the optometrist was a delight. I want to first say that the optometrist was absolutely fantastic, Sara was very thorough, professional, and explained everything to me. She confirmed my previous prescription, I was given samples and I thought I was ready to get some glasses for a great deal (49$ groupon for eye exam and $225 for glasses). Not quite. I'll note that I had actually been in the office the prior week for a contact fitting which went very well, but the sales experience was equally awful. Both times, by the time I sit in the sales chair the salesman has a price upwards of $500 with very little explanation. I understand adding a coating to glasses, but for $99, explain to me what I'm getting, don't scoff when I question it. Instead when I was hesitant, he seemed frustrated and just asked me how much I thought I was going to spend. Sorry, I thought the $225 credit for glasses wouldn't mean you add 8 boxes of contacts I didn't ask for. I lost all confidence at this point and purchased frames and contacts elsewhere. When mentioning their prices seemed high on contacts, I was told "There's no way" from the salesman. I then purchased the $75 per box contacts I was quoted in store that night for $40 online. I'd love to purchase in store but the experience was rough. I will definitely be back for my next eye exam but I won't be purchasing anything from the sales staff. read more

I've slacked and not had an eye exam or new glasses for three years so I thought this was a fantastic deal I couldn't pass up. I expected to drop around $200 after all was said and done, but instead, I dropped nearly $370 *after* the credit.... and... wait for it... I got one of the cheapest pairs of glasses there... and... wait for it again... I still don't have my glasses after 14 days when they said 7-10... so I called them yesterday and I got some BS that the place they ordered from scratched one of my lenses and they had to make another. I got a call today, when I was told they should be ready... and they're not... so... wait for it once more... I won't have my glasses until early next week, at best. That'll be over three weeks. The optometrist I saw that day was actually super nice and efficient. Staff behind the counter were, of course, super nice and flirty and charming because they're trying to upsell you. I don't fault them for that, but they were ooooooozing with so much sweetness I'm pretty sure I walked away with another cavity. A designer place of this magnitude should be on top of it. Don't run multiple daily deals (they have several going simultaneously one of the employees told me) if you can't handle the subsequent workload. And offer a price range that suits more than those who buy Gucci and Coach. You're located in Clarendon, Virginia, not Georgetown in DC. read more

During my appointment, the dr made it clear that it was unacceptable to not have an eye exam every year. That's fine, the dentist tells me to floss every day, and my hair stylist tells me to stop using the flat iron. But her attitude during the whole appointment was really condescending and uncomfortable, because she wouldn't let it go. Fast forward to now - I can't reorder contact lenses because she didn't give me refills. I've worn contacts for 15 years, and this is the first expiring prescription I've had where the doctor wouldn't give me refills even for a 6 pack of lenses. What really gets my goat is that I have actually had an eye exam, due to a different eye issue, within the past 6 months with an ophthalmologist instead of at this location - still no refill script. I'll go for an eye exam now out of necessity, but it won't be at this location. read more
