I do love this bakery! They are the the best in Pittsburgh. Three stars is due to having ordered on line for pick up. When I arrived they knew nothing about my order and said that I did not pay. Not only was that the case but they did not have any of the product that I ordered. They said that I could pick them up the next day. I returned and through my bank account also found out that I was indeed charged the day before. I would not order on line for pick up until this problem is addressed. I was told by the employee who helped me that they have no way if knowing if anything has been ordered or paid for from their end. Get with it Prantle's in this day and age of on-line ordering! read more

Picked up the supposedly famous burnt almond torte. Got it home, put in fridge and decided to eat the next day. What a let down! Cake was very dry, seemed stale and was crumbling. Threw most of it out. Not happy at all. Oakmont bakery, even Giant Eagle's versions are wayyyyy better than this read more

LOVE their Almond Torte! We make a special trip to Shadyside from Cranberry to pick up this cake for all family birthdays. However, I was a little disappointed to find that the cake had been frozen and the filling was completely frozen. Had I known, I would have let it sit out a bit before cutting. Put a bit of a damper on the celebration. read more

So glad I popped in here! I love local bakeries and this one is tremendous! The almond torte is too die for! Also sampled the cookies and cream, red velvet and peanut butter. Ranked: 1. Almond torte 2. Red velvet 3. Cookies and cream 4. Peanut butter (wasn't anything super special, but the flavors above were superb!) I binge are three & didn't feel guilty. read more

It is a wait because they are a popular bakery. I went in hoping they would have a cake for my mom and dads anniversary. And was very happy that they could squeeze everything I wanted on the cake! Great people working behind the counter, fast, proficient, kind and courteous! read more

Prantl's Bakery - Bakeries Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

For someone who loves sweet/dessert, prantl's was a let down! The burnt almond cake was too sweet and was like eating a spoonful of sugar :( brownies were amazing though - perfectly chewy and delightful. Croissants were meh and muffins were dry. read more

I preordered a pie. I went to pick it a up today only to find out they failed to make it and had nothing to substitute it (nor did they offer any substitutions). I will never order from them again. read more

Prantl's is a Pittsburgh staple. I've been coming here since I was a child. I LOVE the sugar cookies, the cupcakes (red velvet and cookies n cream are the best), and their doughnuts! read more

I walked into Prantl's yesterday to check out what they had to offer as far as a birthday cake for my wife. Right off the bat I could tell this place was good from the amount of people in there buying goodies. The staff was very helpful and showed me my options. I was very tempted to buy everything because it all looked and smelled great!!! I asked if they would deliver the cake to children's hospital the next day and told me that it would be no problem. Everyone including the delivery driver went above and beyond to make this a great experience and I'm will definitely be making this place my go to from now on!!! BEST BAKERY OUT THERE GUYS!!! I recommend it to everyone!!!! read more

Burnt Almond Torte has been changed to taste like every other torte. It used to have a light fluffy almond flavored cake and magical pastry cream/custard type filling that had an amazing flavor. The frosting was the perfect compliment to the sugar coated sliced almonds and it was all topped off with powdered sugar. What they are selling now is completely different. The cake tastes like a box white cake mix, the filling was definitely instant vanilla pudding, the icing was way too sweet, the almonds on the latest sheet cake were stale and they no longer dust the tortes with powdered sugar. I will not be wasting my money on another burnt almond torte from Prantls until I know they have returned to the quality, fresh baked, home made recipes of the past. I can get a much cheaper torte at any grocery store to look and taste as good if not better than what they are currently selling. read more

New owners = literally crumby cake now. They. Don't. Care. Go ahead and mention on facebook how tasteless, dry, and crumbly their cake is now compared to before, and they will delete your comment in no time at all. I wasn't mean or anything. I simply pointed out being disappointed at spending so much for what is a dry and tasteless cake. Still, there was no "Sorry to hear we didn't meet your expectations, please contact us" or anything of the sort. Rather than address a customer's problem they deleted the comment (I'm sure I'm not the only one) so you can only see "positive" reviews on their page. SO, consider this your warning: If you spend $39 for a decorated 10" cake, prepare to be completely disappointed. Customer service is even worse. And sure, their proprietary icing hasn't changed...yet...but really the only redeeming quality there now is the thumbprint cookies and the Burnt Almond Torte. These aren't enough to outfit a holiday party and, frankly, I'll be looking elsewhere for moist and flavorful cakes since Prantl's has now officially jumped the shark in this area. And. They. Don't. Care. read more

I have been going to Prantl's for decades but recently the quality has really declined. The new owners seem to have changed most of the recipes and are using cheaper ingredients. I bought a wide variety of items and almost every one tasted old and stale. Such a disappointment. read more

When I first moved to Pittsburgh, I was told that I had to try a burnt almond torte from Prantl's. Having never had a burnt almond torte, I have to say that I was not disappointed. In the meantime, I have found a couple other bakeries in PGH that do it almost as good, and for less money. However, they are the only one that I know of that does a CHOCOLATE burnt almond torte, which is the best cake I have ever had! However at $21 for a cake about 8x10" I usually get it for special occasions. If not for the price and my waistline I would get it every week! 2 locations. The Shadyside store has public parking behind it, while the downtown one is harder to get to and with no apparent parking. read more

If someone asked me where to get dessert in Pittsburgh, Prantl's is my automatic answer! The burnt almond torte is a Pittsburgh classic staple. If someone says they don't like it, I question their sanity. Just the right amount of sugar and sweetness. When traveling to the burgh, it is well worth the stop! read more

Used to be a great bakery. Especially the almond torte. However, I'm noticing some really bad business practices that have just made the bakery fall off. Early in the morning they don't have donuts. What bakery doesn't have donuts in the morning? Then they don't open until 730. It's unfortunate a Shadyside staple that had excellent products and service at one time has really become below average. read more

Ordered online for my wife's birthday. It was perfect! Had it sent to Memphis, TN it arrived cool and fresh. Goldbely is AWESOME!

Sorry, I'm just not feeling it. Oakmont Bakery has a better almond torte and I REALLY hate to say it but even Giant Eagle bakeries have a better version. We had a large selection of their minis and several different thumbprint cookies as well. Everything was dry and way too sweet. We won't be back. read more

I keep trying to support Prantl's. I really want them to be great - they're my neighborhood bakery and I remember the days when their place as an iconic Pittsburgh institution was well deserved. Unfortunately, for many years now that hasn't been the case. I've uploaded a photo which shows the "Jr. Pastry Tray" that I purchased from them this week. The tray comes with 2.5 dozen pastries. I wanted 3 dozen pastries so (after lots of difficulty reaching them online and by the phone - see more about this later), I went in to the store to place this order. I spoke with two different clerks -- the first one had no idea how to accommodate a tray of 3 dozen rather than 2.5 dozen. The second one assured me that they could make this happen. We had an extended conversation about the fact that I still wanted the tray to look nice. Unfortunately, they went with a larger tray and gave me 6 extra pastries in a box. Why not just put the 6 pastries on the tray? Of course, in transit the pastries on the tray had way too much room to move, and were all over the place by the time I could add in the other 6. And, even adding in those 6 didn't make for a full tray. It looked as if I had brought a half-eaten offering to the party I was attending. As for the ordering process, since I was ordering "custom" I sent an email to the email address indicated on their website. I made my request and instantly got an auto-reply that indicated that if I was requesting a custom order that I should send an email indicating that. Which I had just done. So, I called. During hours that they were open. I could not get through to a person, and was directed to place any order online. That's when I went in and placed my order in person. This is not the first challenging situation I've had with the "new" (since 2007) ownership. The service is awful and the product in no way resembles what the Prantl's name meant for so many years. There are lots of great places to get much better Burnt Almond Tortes -- heck, Giant Eagle's is by far better, not to mention Oakmont Bakery's. I'd be fine if they wanted to be an average bakery with terrible service, but I'm not ok with them doing that under the Prantl's name and luring people in based on nostalgia. read more

Prantl's Bakery - Jr. pastry tray on too big of a tray. - Bakeries Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Since covid 19 the quality of their thumb print cookies went from 5 stars to 1 star. They are a lot smaller and the price went up, and they taste terrible. I WAS BUYING THEM ALL THE TIME. read more

Honest this is THE BEST bakery I have ever had in my entire life. I cannot believe anyone would not like this bakery. My favorite items from here - the vanilla buttercream birthday cake is literally the best cake I have ever tried (and I have had a lot of different cakes before) the iced cookies, the thumbprint cookies and cherry humantash are literally heaven. This is my favorite bakery and I will always be obsessed! Literally everything at this bakery tastes AMAZING and UNREAL. read more

Nope. Sorry, I grew up in pgh. Heart of a true pittsburgher. But my gosh. One word for prantl's: crisco. Seriously, my arteries hurt after eating a desert from this place. Not half as good as a few of the French etc bakeries around. Why waste your cardiovascular health on this place--go get gelato next door and you'll be better off! read more

I really wanted to like this bakery! I came in with high expectations, I'll admit, because I thought I had heard good things about it. I bought about four different pastries to sample with a friend so we could eat them with our coffee across the street. Though the presentation of the treats were lovely, every single one I picked out was sickeningly sweet and tasted the same as the next. Far too much frosting on each pastry and we only could finish one small pastry between the two of us. Overall, unimpressed. However, it probably doesn't help that I had just come back from Austria which arguably has the best pastries in the world! read more

This place is inconsistent and highly unorganized. I probably wouldn't recommend anything beyond a burnt almond tort and the mini bite sized cakes anyhow. Their cake is best served through a straw with milk and ice cream (Burgatory). Other than that it's your run of the mill. We ordered a standard cake once; the icing was gross, and the cake tasted like it sat in the fridge for a week. It is definitely not a high end french style bakery, but it fills a void in the market I suppose. This is hit or miss, a one hit wonder. read more

I come here strictly for the doughnuts. They are dense, moist, and they are generous with the toppings. Oof. Every time my coworkers bring Dunkin Donuts or Giant Eagle donuts in I don't even touch them because I am now a doughnut SNOB thanks to Prantl's. I brought a dozen and 1/2 to work today and I'm pretty sure I converted everyone into a doughnut snob. Sorry not sorry. read more

The BEST Burnt Almond Cake , I ever had!!! I come from California, a chef graduate of CCA , San Francisco,CA . Visiting for the first time , to watch my grandchild graduate. Just wanted a nice dessert , I was walking in the area, found this on yelp, review of burnt almond cake was unfavorable. I wanted to decide for myself. To my wonderful surprise, sitting atop Mt.Washington , with the most fantastic view , my husband and I shared a piece of burnt almond cake , his reaction was OMG, I immediately dug in, almonds were crunchy and sweet, an Unami of flavors with the delicacy of the white cake , and burnt almonds . Can't get any better than perfect!! Old time atmosphere of a fine bakery, orders to go! read more

The almond torte used to be the best, hands down. But, something happened sadly. The cake part is now dry??? Was there a change in recipe, ownership, something? Go back to the way it was done before. Maybe I just got an old cake, I don't know. But I'm really disappointed. The other stuff is good... this is just an almond torte review. read more

The worst service I ever received, Order a full sheet almond torte birthday day cake 3 days in advance. The day of pick up.I try calling 10 times to make sure it was ready. And it was not in their system. By the way, I paid for it when I order it.Going around and around. With them, they gave me a half sheet cake for free. This took over 1 hour for that.A person in line said they did the same thing to them. This made me late for the SURPRISE PARTY. Here what really made me mad.The next day I check my credit card online. I must be jaded since I came from Boston where the Bakeries are excellent. I heard through the grape vine that the roasted almond torte was excellent so we bought some and brought it home. The salty sweet toasted almond coating was excellent, but the fluffy cake with some type of pudding between the layers was mediocre at best. I hate it when bakeries make awful cake because it seems to me that is an easy item to get right. I will give them another chance but so far I would say they are average. read more

Not that this place needed another review of their Burnt Almond Torte, but I must anyway. I don't really like bakery cakes but this is transcendent. We picked one up for my daughter's birthday, which we were celebrating at a restaurant in Shady Side, and not only was the counter staff friendly and fun, the product was definitely enough to make a return visit mandatory. read more

I had never heard of a burnt almond torte before I moved back to Pittsburgh. The first time I saw one of these cakes was at a party one evening. I noticed the square cake with shaved almonds on it and asked, "What's that?" "That's a Burnt Almond Torte from Prantl's, you've never had one?" Why was it called a burnt almond torte? The almonds were barely toasted, but they were coated with a thick layer of sugar. Beyond that, I could see the white buttercream that coated the cake. Well, I was in, because as everyone knows, I'm a huge fan of anything with frosting on it. My first bite of a burnt almond torte was delicious; the crunchy-sugared almonds provided a beautiful texture against the creamy, sweet frosting. Beyond the first layer of goodness lay an extremely fluffy, almost angel-food like cake that was light, but moist. Between the two layers of cake is a thick coating of vanilla-flavored custard. The combination of flavors and textures provide a unique experience, and if you haven't had one, is worth trying. Besides the Burnt Almond Torte, Prantl's has a wide selection of other baked goodies like coffeecakes, cookies, pies and donuts. I've had an opportunity to try some of the other selections at Prantl's bakery, and they're equally as good as the Burnt Almond Torte. Prantl's Bakery has added a location, at 438 Market Street in Pittsburgh, PA. If you're in Shadyside, you can visit the original location at 5525 Walnut Street. If you would like to try a burnt almond torte, but don't live in the city of Pittsburgh, you can order one here for a mere $25.00 I've picked up one of the tortes on many occasions; they're a crowd pleaser. If you're on your way to a party, and don't want to show up empty-handed, stop by Prantl's and pick up a Burnt Almond Torte! read more

This used to be the best bakery in Pittsburgh. They do have the best almond tort in the city. However the service and the selection has gone down over the past year. We love their decorative cookies with the icing and they never have any. When I asked they said they sell out quick well if you have a product that sells out you would think to make more! I was at the Shadyside location multiple times this week and they did not have any icing cookies but had tons of the thumbprints. Sorry but step your game up please and thanks I would love to support your store more often but it seems like you guys don't want my business. Still a decent bakery but would love them to get back to a few years ago quality and service wise. If you need almond tort this is your place to go. read more

A Pittsburgh gem. I adore Prantl's Bakery. It is a must visit if you have friends or family in town. They have a tasty selection of pastries, cakes, cookies and donuts. Each more sugary and delicious than the next. By far my favorite are the small cake cups. The perfect little treat while shopping along Walnut St. There are so many flavors to chose from but I can never go past the classic burnt almond custard cup or the seasonal pumpkin cake cup. That buttercream frosting is heaven! Also, hats off to the staff who maintain composure even in the midst of the weekend onslaught when people pack in like sardines to get their sweet fix. read more

I would give 5 stars but the wedding cake sample pack tasted differently from our actual wedding cake. which leads me to believe they skipped the final product. the cake looked great, and tasted good, however compared to the samples, it was a shell of quality. Be careful ordering online or for shipping! Let me first say I love this almond torte! But buy it in the shop. If you must order for shipping, make sure you check w recipient as to how it arrives. At $49 + +$20 ship, you'd expect it to be packaged properly. Mine arrived damaged because the cake was put in a regular thin bakery box, wrapped loosely in thin plastic wrap. The plastic wrap wasn't even wrapped all around the cake so the sides of cake were exposed causing pieces of cake & almonds to fall out inside the shipping box. The bakery box wasn't taped shut or tied, so the cake slipped out! So it was smashed! There was no padding in the silver sleeve that it was put into. So it just rolled around in the box. I called Prantls & spoke to Evan who said he was a manager & told me operations were moved to greensburg & he wasn't aware of the controls but what I described was "insane." He assured me my mother who placed the order to be sent to me would get a refund. He'd call me the next day. He asked me to detail the incident w photos & email to Prantls which I did immediately. 2 days later, I hadn't heard back via email or phone so I called. Evan was in the store but "busy" & I was told would call me back but I never heard. So the next day, I went through goldbely the online service Prantls uses. Again provided pics. They required my 79 year old mom to email them with her info since she was the purchaser. She did so. (This was the first time my poor mom ever ordered anything online! She was so proud of herself! And so excited! I'm sure it will be her last) goldbely finally contacted mom via email and said Prantls said that the cake is still edible when when it arrived smashed & damaged so they do not issue refunds if you can still eat the cake! So - if you want to order the cake to eat it & dont care if you pay $49 to get it smashed, then go for it. If you're thinking of this as a gift - especially a corporate gift - I would strongly recommend against it! My husband was considering it for a corporate client & obviously is not going to order it after he saw it.. he's actually thankful he saw this & saved the embarrassment because he probably wouldn't have known how it arrived to his client. It's such a shame because this was my wedding cake. I've been telling my friends about it & trying to convince them that little ol Pittsburgh is more than what they think it is. That the best cake can come from the burgh. I moved from Pittsburgh 18 years ago & have popped in to Prantls when I could & told friends who's kids are headed to Pitt (many gravitating to the area these days) so the whole experience & lack of response & customer service from what I thought was upscale bakery has been a huge disappointment read more

The beautiful cake in the window caught my attention so I went inside. There were pastries and cookies and sweets of all types. The cake cups caught my attention so I decided to buy a few. There were so many flavors that I could not make up my mind. The cake cup flavors were : chocolate peanut butter, burnt almond, cookies and cream, white chocolate raspberry, s'mores, toffee, lemon, red velvet, strawberry and cream, and sour cream chocolate cake. The price was right so I bought a few different flavors to try. The s'mores, sour cream chocolate, and almond torte were delicious. The size is just right so you can enjoy a sweet without feeling guilty. I have not tasted my white chocolate raspberry, strawberry and cream and toffee ones yet but if they are as good as the almond, sour cream chocolate and s'mores I am in for a treat. I must also add that the young lady who helped me with my selections was very nice. She patiently explained each flavor and answered all of my questions without rushing me. She also carefully packed my items so that they would not get smashed during transport. This bakery has top notch sweets and top notch staff. read more

Oh, baked almond torte, how I love you. Why, though, must you be so caloric!?! It distresses me that I must save you for special occasions.
