Pottery and Beyond has been my go-to source since I moved to Oakland 30 years ago. Until today, I would've given them a five-star review. They have an amazing selection and the prices are fairly reasonable and a little negotiable. The service has been great until today, hence my lower rating. I went to exchange some pots that were the wrong size and was greeted by an employee named Ping. When I asked a question about their exchange policy, Ping handled it by pointing at a sign and telling me three times in rapid succession to read their policy. It seemed very dictatorial and unfriendly, as if I were stupid or argumentative, rather than a customer with a simple question. I left feeling disrespected and angry. I'll still shop at Pottery and Beyond, but I'll certainly avoid dealing with Ping. read more

Came here looking for some rectangular pots for my succulents plants. I've driven by Pottery & Beyond, which is located across from Target, many times but never checked it out. It's a large open air business with many varieties of pots in various shapes, sizes and colors. The have fountains and statues as well. Their inventory is well organized by shape and sizes. In the back are inventory that were marked down at 30-50% off. I saw the rectangular pots and in the color was looking for, but they were not the size I wanted. A worker said they didn't have anything smaller. A good place to check out if you need pots for your plants. They have some parking spaces as you enter, but there are plenty of street parking out front. read more

Very cool store. You've all probably driven past this area a dozen times but unless you have need for pottery that you can hide an entire family in, you probably have never stumbled into this place. The prices for the size of containers you get here are really a very good deal ... but still a few hundred dollars (not counting what you'd have to pay for shipping / delivery) ... many of these puppies aren't going to fit into the trunk of your Prius. It was fun to walk around and look at all the water features and think - where would I put this giant thing if I could get it home? I've been thinking of setting up a rain barrel collection as a more eco way to water my garden - so this might have some options ... but that's a project for another day (and a bigger truck). After the longest time, my wife and I finally stopped over to see what's good. So with that said, the good is that it has a huge inventory. There are pots as far as the eye could see. Okay it's not that expansive but it goes go one for quite a bit. I bet you've seen it as you drive by, tucked away by the wrapping road. This place is fun to explore. The part that turns me off though is the service. I felt like we were being watched the whole time. There was always an associate floating around and at times just standing there looking at us. I think they mean well and just wanted to help but it made us feel rushed. We found a good amount of pots to give our plants happy new homes but I'm hesitant to come back. This place just gets better over time. They have recently increased their inventory of beautiful and VERY affordable plants. The pot selection remains large and varied. More fountains, and placed where they're easier to see. I get the comments about the hovering employee. I think he wants to be helpful. (It's not like we're looking to tuck a pot into our jacket.). Carlos is an employee who does not hover and as I mentioned in my previous review is knowledgeable about plants and really a pleasure to work with. 1. Poor customer service - if a customer asks you a question about pricing dont respond "the pricing is on the sticker". Even worse walk away and not assist the customer in obtaining what they need. Most of the products there had no identification of price. Additionally the black and gray unclear photo of pricing WAS UNCLEAR. There were products in the field not on the picture. 2. The selection is overrated and looks outdated in my opinion. The products dont seem well maintained. 3. Poor judgement / Assumptions / Prejudices - Dont assume because someone is YOUNG AND BLACK PRICES cant be afforded. I'm a landscaper and have shopped here for years. I haven't written a review before, and only went to YELP to see recent pictures of new styles, but the negative reviews really upset me. The salesman "follow you" to be helpful. It's my experience that many Asian cultures are somewhat more rushed than some folks may be used to, but that does not mean they are rude. The prices are fine / good compared to other local vendors. Planters are expensive, yes but not just there. Their basalt and granite pieces may be better priced elsewhere because those places have a huge stock and constant new pieces arriving; again, P & B prices are ok. Its true, they don't speak a lot of English but i've always done FINE. They have been helpful, including special returns or exchanges etc. The Bay Area has diverse culture. You want the culture, than accept the culture...... If you want a West Elm experience, go there or Sloat Garden and pay much more. And YES, Pottery and Beyond has just that. Their stock is indeed Asian, not Mexican or European. They have tons of shapes, styles, colors etc and prices are very reasonable for what you're getting. read more

Came here on a Sunday looking for a ceramic pot for the yard. Easy parking inside their gate, or right outside. Big selection, especially for water features. Prices seemed about right for this kind of product. We wandered around looking for something particular. I noticed that there was someone that was sort of hanging around in the general area where we were looking. Since we moved around their yard, I noticed that someone was always just hanging around us. It didn't take me too long to figure out they must work at Pottery & Beyond. Were they watching us to make sure we didn't shoplift giant heavy ceramic pots? They have a lot of pots here. When you go in, the guy tends to stick close to you. He asked that I not pick up any pots, but I think instead of looking at it as annoying or view the customer as thieves, I figure they do it so people don't accidentally drop the heavy pots so they break, or drop it on their toes, or hurt themselves which could potential lead to who's at fault. Anyway, they have anything and everything and in many colors and sizes. I did order a few pots which will be delivered to me for an additional fee. It's better than be carrying it. I drive by this place all the time. First attempt - we were 5 mins past close at 4 pm and the gate was closed. Ok, no problem. Second attempt - looked at the hours, said 6 pm close. We got there at 3:50 pm. A man came running towards us holding his arms up in an X sign and shouted "no no no!" and slammed the gate shut on us. I will not be giving them my business which is a shame as I was ready to outfit my entire house and balcony with pottery. They missed out on hundreds of dollars. THE WORST customer service in any retail establishment that I have literally ever experienced. First of all, surly and unfriendly service. We came in at 5:20 and let them know we planned to buy a bunch of pots. They were not very helpful and followed us around like we were criminals. At 5:30 they informed us that they closed at 6. At 5:40 they started to ask us to hurry up. Three separate people came over before 5:45 to tell us to hurry up because they closed at 6. We were extremely irritated at that point and told them that we didn't take appreciate being rushed. Then they asked us if we were done. We told them we were NOT done and we working to finalize our selections. They were basically shaking their head and wagging their fingers at us. We went in to pay and when they insulted us one last time we asked for the owners name and they refused to give it to us. We decided they do not deserve our money and walked out. I just purchased three glazed planters, all with beautiful color. Two were about 15 gallon size and the third about seven gallons. Total cost was less than I would spend at some other place.
