It's really like a candy store for adults - there's something amazing (and made my local makers) in every corner you look! On this most recent visit, I went a couple days after Christmas and stocked up on holiday cards and ornaments for 2021 since all their holiday items were 50% off. The entire store was also 25% off as per their end-of-year sale. They have a fantastic selection of cards, gifts, homewares, jewelry, accessories, and select clothing items. This store is so much fun. It feels like a treasure hunt every time…read more Serena & Lily's aesthetic is so appealing to me -- all the rattan, sea grass, whitewashed wood, capiz and shells; beachy, sophisticated, boho. I can't afford the higher priced items even on sale, but I've managed to get a few smaller effects that have added to my coastal decor in my Capitola home in a classy way. I've always had great customer service experiences at this store. When you see a product you like, you've got to pull it off the floor immediately so other covetous patrons can't grab it -- I've had people tell me they want something I'm holding in my hands if I decide not to buy it; the employees graciously hold my picks behind the counter for me. One time I was looking at rugs and an employee pulled up all the images of the rugs I was interested in for me on the website with an iPad since they can't unroll them for you. Another time I was buying a sconce light and the cashier grabbed me a brand new one still in the box to replace the display model. The inventory changes all the time and there's always a good selection with a lot of cool stuff. Occasionally something might be a little dented but mostly the merchandise is in perfect condition and good quality.

But lately, I'm having a hard time understanding who this place is for. The merchandise is secondhand, used as photo samples, damaged, or incomplete, yet the prices don't significantly reflect that. I've recently seen things like a wooden trestle table missing half a trestle, with the piece of wood with actual exposed nails sticking out & simply placed on its table top, priced as though it were lightly discounted. Yes things are marked down, but they are also frequently damaged, and recently, for me, the math ain't mathing. I used to enjoy coming here for some real finds. Not so much any more. Keep in mind, you've got to bring your own truck or hire a task rabbit to get the furniture purchased here to your home. Think all the inconveniences, but fewer and fewer of the deals. I was offered a discount today, of 20 percent, that only started after spending over $500. That's a commitment. To me, it feels like the secondhand goods remain the focus here, but the hunt is not yielding the same treasure.

I went to Pot-Pourri yesterday to ask Max if he knew a woodworker who could repair a wooden bowl…read morethat had been broken. The bowl had been dropped before, several years ago, w/ slight damage that had been fixed, but this was much more major. Max couldn't think of anyone to recommend but as we talked he reassembled a few of the larger shards and taped them in place w/ blue tape to hold them. Fatima, who cleans for me and who dropped it, felt terrible and offered to replace it, but Alan and I bought it decades ago in Hanalei Maui and it can't be replaced. I will pick up some wood glue at a hardware store and she can take it home and work on it when she has time. When I went to write this review I was delighted to see so many others have written reviews of Pot-Pourri. For a while I was the only one. Being in the gallery tugged at my heart as usual because there are always so many beautiful and tempting objects, but I resisted all temptation. Doesn't mean I won't go back again to look further, though. I also asked Max who made the glass octopuses and he wrote down the name and location, Michael Kopko, Weaverville CA and I wrote a review of his gallery, which is open by appointment only.

With the expected delivery window coming to an end, I desperately searched for answers so I contacted the warehouse myself out of frustration, only to learn they had no record of my order. It turned out SOBU had missed it during processing and never placed it, and this was only discovered because I dug into it myself. Although they apologized, expedited the shipping and offered a partial refund, the follow-through was still poor. Promises were made that weren't kept, which I was expecting but still irritated by. Seriously though, you guys are a small business; isn't customer service supposed to be your thing? I understand that mistakes happen, but there should have been some alarm bells ringing when I mentioned there had been ZERO communication about my order since I initially placed the order and it was supposed to be delivered within the next 4 days. The freight company (Metropolitan warehouse and delivery) was also a separate issue. They falsely claimed they were attempting delivery when they hadn't even arrived at my home. So just be careful because they do charge a rescheduling fee in that situation. That's not Sobu's fault but just an fyi. The table itself is nice, but the lack of communication and follow-through made the entire experience unnecessarily stressful. I shouldn't have had to do all of this just to get an answer. From initial ordering to delivery took ~7.5 weeks. I'm not sure how much longer it would've taken if I just sat idly by waiting for because "I was still in my delivery window" as they suggested.
