Had a fantastic experience at Potente! Service was top notch. A great option for a nice dinner or date night. The vanilla pear margarita and espresso martini were both delicious! Such a beautiful establishment that we were fortunate enough to try during their HRW dinner ($45 / 3 courses). For parking they offer $8 valet or good luck finding your own street parking. Upon arrival, we were seated promptly for our reservation of our party of 6. The coolest part were their light up menus! The staff was highly attentive, and it was neat to be offered still or sparkling water. For starters, I ordered the Polipetti Arrostiti (squid ink pasta) based on a friend's previous visit, and what a delight it was! If you're looking for a special occasion-type appetizer, I'd fully recommend this dish. For my entree, I chose the Spaghetti al Tartufo Nero (black truffle spaghetti). While this dish did have a $12 supplemental charge, I wouldn't let that extra charge inhibit you from ordering this treat. It was neat to have table side shaved black truffles! The truffles added a wonderfully creamy aspect to this dish, making it have a distinctly woody flavor as well. For the dessert, I opted for the Delizia al Cioccolato which was almost like a larger sized Ferraro Rocher. Some said it was a bit too chocolatey, but I especially loved the sea salt caramel mousse in the center. I also did order a special HRW priced drink, a Cucumber Lime Gimlet ($8). Although it looked small for size, this drink packed a strong punch but still had a fresh taste to it. Came here for HRW 2020, and it was a stunning restaurant with superb service and scrumptious cuisine! Loved the entire experience here. The whipped artichoke hummus came with delightful fried garlic and the bread was warm and soft. The polipetti arrostiti was elegantly displayed and delish. The granchio (crab) was fried very well and the sauces complemented the dish wonderfully. The fragola crostata was light and a satisfying end to this amazing meal. We've gone to Potente every year to celebrate my birthday. The service and food is always on point. We also check out their Houston Restaurant Weeks menus as well. I was excited to learn they're participating in curbside for HRW. With Covid-19, we haven't felt comfortable dining out. We ordered the octopus and scallop 1st courses, the duck and truffle pasta 2nd courses, and the strawberry tart and chocolate cake for dessert. They even included their famous amuse bouche: whipped artichoke hummus. We love their food. Their grilled octopus appetizer with the spicy red pepper sauce is really well done. We haven't found any truffle pasta that compares to this place. I hadn't tried these desserts before, but they were delicious. I'm so glad they're participating in curbside HRW this year. I was in town for a dental convention and was invited to go to dinner at Potente. I didn't know what to expect since I have never been there before and I didn't have a chance to check out Yelp. First of all it is very conveniently close to the convention center so I was able to walk. So that was a plus! The menus light up which was very unique and it made it easy to read. The service was outstanding. My salad and entree were so good. They make their pasta daily so that it is fresh. I could definitely taste the difference. We had a wonderful experience. Service and food was impeccable! After having parked way down the street and around the corner, we made the walk to the restaurant (in heels that we hadn't walked in since March), and I realized that I had forgotten my mask- which is required in order to enter the building. Thankfully, they had disposable masks available for just such instances! Everything was amazing! We ordered from the HRW menu, and had the burrata, diver scallop, branzino, truffle spaghetti, chocolate cake and strawberry tart. We were pleased with all the courses. The only thing that gave us a bit of pause was that it appeared that the restaurant was seated to full capacity, with not much room between the tables. It was our first visit, so we aren't certain as to the normal dining room layout. However, there was no room to have added in any extra tables- so our impression was that nothing had been altered and that this was a normal dining arrangement for them. Every time someone at another table coughed, we got nervous (eek!). Guess that's the chance you take dining out during a pandemic. Overall- a wonderful experience. I've been dying to try this place and I happened to have time to stop by here the day of New Year's Eve. Potente was close to where we needed to go afterwards, so it was perfect! At first, they said they were completely booked and had no tables, but walk ins were welcomed at the bar. When arriving, they said they only had the bar until the guy rethought about it and said there was a table that no one wanted, but just in a different room. We decided to take it. Upon seating, the servers were going back and forth and I was wondering why they didn't just put the menu down and asked if we wanted anything to drink. After waiting for about 5 minutes, someone said they would be right with us. When they finally came, they said they would give us the menu after giving us a few items: --Dom Perignon (5/5) - Who doesn't love some delicious champagne! --Squid Ink Macaron & Russian Caviar (4/5) - Surprisingly really good! The sweetness of the macaron and a slight of saltiness from the caviar paired really well together. This dish was a creative one! A bit confused still...but the service was great after realizing it was a 5 course menu with minimal options. We pretty much tried everything on the menu that night because it was basically either or that you had to choose between and there were the two of us. FIRST: --Zuppa di Aragosta (3/5) - Lobster soup, with a tiny piece of lobster and one tortelloni with escargot in it. The first spoon was tasty, but then all of a sudden the next few spoons were super salty. I enjoyed the little tortelloni though! --Foie Gras Torchon (5/5) - This foie gras is not what most people think. It's more of a pate-like butter that you probably need an acquired taste for. A slight saltiness of the foie, with a hint of strawberry sweetness jam to spread on a brioche. I enjoyed! SECOND: --Spaghetti Al Tartufo Nero (3.5/5) - I would have given this a 4.5, but the spaghetti definitely was undercooked. The flavor was great, I loved the table side truffle. The truffle flavor was definitely up to par. THIRD: --Pesce San Pietro (5/5) - A white fish that's very light, delicate, and flakey with some rapini (almost like Chinese broccoli). I enjoyed this dish a lot! --Texas Blue Crab Imperial Tart (2/5) Basically a crab cake on top of a tart. It was a tad fishy, but big lumps of crabmeat. The sauce spreaded around at the bottom made the tart soggy after awhile and it was also sweet. Not something I would order again. INTERMEZZO: Sgroppino (4/5) A sweet, tart, lemon sorbet with champagne in it. Yummy sorbet-like froze to clean off your pallet. FOURTH: --Anatra (3.5/5) - Im not a fan of duck because of the gamey-ness, but surprisingly it didn't have that taste. Compared to the ribeye I had, this was medium rare so it was a little more juicy and tender. This had a small sweetness kick to it, which I would have preferred it to be just savory all the way. Also, it came with a mini crab cake and sunny sided quail egg that I didn't get to try. --Filetto Di Manzo & Capesante (3/5) - They did not ask me how I liked my ribeye, but it was cooked through and pretty tough and there wasn't much flavor. There was also mashed potatoes which was pretty good and it was topped with a scallop that was cooked to perfection! FIFTH: --Brazos Valley Formaggio (0/5) - I love cheeseboards, but everything on this board was TOO SMELLY. I couldn't even take a decent bite. The plate looked amazing, but I would pass on this every lifetime. --Sauternes (-/4) - A bunch of different Italian cookies, I only tried the macaron and the desert wine and they were mehhh. Total bill came out to $300 something...I would have rather spent that elsewhere with how everything tasted. Houston Restaurant Week review I took my boyfriend here for his birthday on Thursday and the dinning room was full when I tried to book online so we got a table near the bar area instead. The sit and atmosphere was quite nice. We lucky enough to get a FREE parking slot ( Mon-Fri after 6PM) in front of the restaurant instead of Valet Parking. The food overall was delicious especially with the deal from HRW, my fav is the sea bass and truffle pasta. The server we got that day was very nice and funny as well. The only down side would be the SMALL PORTIONS . It was great pricing with the deal from HRW, however, if I have to pay normal price $42 for that tiny truffle pasta, I don't know if it's worth it with no protein and half a portion of a normal entrees. Potente is an upscale Italian restaurant owned by Houston Astros owner Jim Crane. I circled around this area two times due to the downtown area, and the Potente sign does not really stand out. There is street parking and complimentary valet parking. The main entrance to the restaurant is undergoing construction, so we were advised to use the bar door at the middle. It is a full bar in a room that's separate from the main dining area. We were greeted and seated in a timely manner. FOOD: Complimentary bread with garlic cloves, artichoke, and hummus: I loved the artichoke! Definitely something different compared to bread and butter that are served in most restaurants. Tonno and Foie Gras (tuna crudo, foie gras freeze, lemon, and caperberry, 3/5): I was really looking forward to the foie gras, but I realized it was more of a tuna crudo dish with a "freeze". Tuna was just okay. Presentation was interesting, but I didn't find anything that stood out. It was kind of bland. Carpaccio di Manzo (marble ranch wagyu, 12 year balsamic, sunchoke, chanterelle, 4/5): I'd recommend this appetizer. Great preparation and presentation. This was my second favorite of the night. The wagyu paired well with the sunchoke and chanterelle. Ravioli del Cacciatore (creole roasted pheasant and rabbit, indian creek mushroom, gunpowder spiced chevre, 5/5): Oh the hint of spice was delicious! My friend mentioned that the 3 raviolis had different ingredients, but I thought they were quite similar. I would order this again! Great taste. Filetto di Cernia (red snapper, jumbo lump crab, citrus, cannellini bean, roasted tomato, finocchio, petite greens, 3/5): This was just OK. I wasn't blown away. Simple dish with your usual fish and pieces of crab. Everything from the service to the food was perfect. Their cacio e pepe - get it. They put shaved black truffles on it.. just the right amount. Sever recommended adding crab on it but we got it just plain. It was heavy but that's cacio e pepe for you. Partner got their special -roasted red snapper with two pieces of grilled shrimp, risotto with a seafood broth. I don't know how a dish could be light and heavy at the same time but this was such a fresh flavorful seafood dish. I think it's more of the best I've ever had. The risotto was not a typical risotto- It was on the drier end but still perfect for the dish! Definitely a special occasion place, between appetizer to entrees dessert involved wine we ended up spending about 260$. So worth it and we can't wait to return ! read more

This place was such a let down unfortunately. I had wanted to go all month long for the truffle pasta. We went late April 29th (a Saturday) and the truffle pasta didn't have any table-side truffle shavings because they were "all out" so I guess it shouldn't be surprising that the truffle in the pasta didn't seem fresh either. Also the server didn't seem to know anything about truffles at all and had never even heard of a truffle pig...??? The crème brûlée was certainly not made to order either. I don't mind paying top dollar for top quality but it seemed the cost and quality were incongruent- at least concerning the truffle pasta. Three stars because the ambiance was great, the bathroom mirrors and lighting are amazing, and the octopus was phenomenal. But darn I'm still dreaming of the fantasy of homemade pasta with fresh truffles which wasn't met. read more

One of the best Italian restaurants I've visited BY FAR! This restaurant has been on my bucket list to try for a while & finally we were able to make reservations to try it out! We went on a Tuesday evening, party of 5 and it was pretty chill and not as busy. We ordered quite a lot & did family style for the appetizers. Everything was absolutely mind-blowing. My favorite appetizers: pork belly & the foie gras! The texture was so soft and almost melts in your mouth. Portions were decent and easily shareable. For mains, we shared the 44oz porterhouse and also each got our own entree. I had the spaghetti al tartufo nero where they shave the truffle table-side & the first bite instantly knocked me out with so much amazing flavor. I usually don't hype over truffle that much, but this was a whole new experience! Our dinner that evening did put a dent in our wallets, but we were celebrating a important special occasion and with how everything tasted, the service given, and overall ambiance, I believe it was worth it. Atmosphere is simple yet sophisticated. Service was slightly slo at times. It took about 10 minutes after seating to get menus. We started off with the duck confit appetizer and it was lovely. I had the truffle pasta since it was described as one of their most signature dishes. It was yum and VERY 'truffle' and they even grate fresh truffle on the top when they bring it out. I do love truffle but I felt a little overwhelmed and tired of the purely truffle taste half way through it. We had the limone pavlova for dessert which did not disappoint. The best piece of advice I can give about this place is that if you appreciate truffles at all, don't leave here without getting the spaghetti al tartufo nero. If you LOVE TRUFFLES (me), order 2 of them (I would have if I had time). And if you're dining with anyone who might want a bite of yours, tell them to go away and order their own (but you must still order 2 for yourself). It's not a very big portion and it disappears pretty quickly. They also top it with black truffle, freshly shaved, table-side. Nice touch, Potente. You know how Tex mex restaurants give complimentary salsa and chips? Or other Italian restaurants give bread with an olive oil / balsamic vinegar spice mix? This place takes it up a notch and gives you complimentary fantastic bread to eat with a very tasty hummus topped with whole roasted garlic cloves and delicately fried artichoke. And they give refills of these things. Yippee The sea bass was cooked perfectly - flaky and juicy on the inside, crispy and delicious on the outside. Highly recommended (you could order this AND the spaghetti for your meal and be golden). Oh yah. Lobster bisque was creamy and delightful. The boyfriend loved it and would order it again. Dessert - tried the H-Town dream cake. If you like chocolate you'd like this. Not overly sweet. My favorite part was the vanilla gelato served with this. When I come back (and I definitely will) I'll probably try the Chef's brûlée or the apple galette. Service - attentive and knowledgable (great wine suggestions). Excellent. This is my 2nd timing coming here. The first time we did dinner before a Toyota center concert so it's perfect location for fine dinning in downtown if you have plans nearby. Food was super good and the drinks! This 2nd time was a for a dinner and drinks with my bestie at the bar. First time here, and my goodness--it was amazing. The level of service we received was exceptional and the food/drinks were literally amazing. My friend and I went for happy hour (which was great btw, good prices for well crafted cocktails ~$9). Our first HRW Dinner of the Season (Early August) was Sublime from the understated ambience of the décor to the service. The Whipped Artichoke Hummus was a unique spin on a traditionally chickpea-only spread with the roasted garlic adding just the right hint of smokiness. The Capesante (Scallop) entrée was seared golden-brown and melted in my mouth while the medley of flavors in the Mais (Corn) Salad was refreshing on the tongue. When my Granchio (Soft-shell Crab) Entree arrived, I almost died and went to heaven. It was beautifully fried without being overly oily and the meat inside was succulent and tender. The pasta was the highlight - I had the anatra which was duck agnolotti and it was one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. I tried the truffle spaghetti too and it was very good. Came on a Thursday night and was able to find street parking for free. I came for an event, so we were served off menu items. We had a burrata dish, which was delicious. I believe the cheese is imported. I also had a seafood pasta. I like homemade pasta and enjoyed the texture. Don't know if I would be willing to come back to pay $20+ for pasta dish. The steak was cooked well, a smaller portion. Had a chocolate cake and apple galette for dessert, which were a-okay as well. Overall, I appreciated the extravagant decor. I became aware of this restaurant while reading an article in The Houston Chronicle about can't miss Houston Restaurant Weeks menus. As I learned more about it I found out that it is located across the street from Minute Maid Park and is owned by Astros owner Jim Crain. Potente is a fine dining Italian restaurant only open for dinner. Based on the recommendation from the Chronicle and the fact that I have never been there, I made a reservation for last Friday night. Parking options here are valet, any open nearby garage or the street. Walking inside, the bar is on the left separated from the dining areas on the right. After being seated and the presentation of the backlit food and drink menus (nice) including the 3 course HRW menu which I ordered from I chose the Burrata to begin with followed by the Barramundi and ending with the Tropicale. First to arrive was a complimentary plate of artichoke hummus for the table to share. I enjoyed it as it was devoured quickly. The first course was the Burrata with heirloom tomatoes, whipped puglia's cheese, cucumber and olive oil. I thought the tomato slices and whipped cheese were pleasant to eat and enjoyed them (3.5). This was followed by the Barramundi which was roasted sea bass with farmer's vegetables coated in a corn brodo which is an Italian broth. This selection was very good in taste (4). The fish was properly prepared and delicious with a nice butter aftertaste. It was a generous portion and with the fresh veggies in the brodo satisfied me. I would be happy to order this again. To finish was the Tropicale consisting of white chocolate pineapple mousse and pistachio cake with a sorrel syrup. I liked the mousse but the pistachio cake was a little dry for me. I'm not sure if this was on purpose but I would have liked this dessert better had the cake been more moist (3). All in all this was a decent meal however we had some problems. First of all, our waiter seemed argumentative and not helpful. I won't go into details but he lacked good customer service skills especially for working in a fine dining restaurant. I could maybe understand if we were eating at Applebee's but we weren't. His service was actually attentive but when he opened his mouth he failed. You don't argue with your customers. Finally, when the total bill was presented we were informed that they don't split checks and he offered no help leaving us to figure out what we each owed. That lack of flexibility on his part and the restaurant was disappointing. Another problem was that a table near us of a party of 6 was very loud at times destroying the intimacy of a restaurant like this. One of our group stated that this restaurant was trying to be upscale but wasn't pulling it off. I agreed. My food was good but not to the overall level that I expected and the waiter service kind of ruined the meal. I could give a 2 but I won't because I believe the food alone is at least a 3 so that's what I'll give. However giving a 3 to a restaurant like this is not a compliment so I think I made my point.
