Ugh, this place is just incredible. I had heard about the Potato Head in Bali but I had no idea there was one in Hong Kong too. My friends brought me here on a weekday evening on a whim, and luckily we didn't have to wait for seats. But it was also raining that evening, so maybe that's why they had an open table for us. The interior design is so classy and modern. Despite the quiet neighborhood, it was quite loud inside the restaurant. You could just tell everyone was feeling the buzz from the drinks. I wish I could recall what dishes I ordered because they were so tasty. I vaguely remember ordering a plate of veggies, fried rice, and noodles to share. Two of us got the Pisang Colado (HK$140) because it came in a young coconut. The rum was way too strong for me. I'd love to bring my boyfriend here someday. read more

The cocktails were delicious and reasonably priced, though sometimes a tad too sweet. Presentation was excellent and creative. The only qualm we had is that we were charged HK$150 for water that we weren't informed about! When I requested a glass of water, I was expecting tap water, (which I am completely fine with) since the server did not ask us for a preference for still or sparkling water (from the bottle). But to charge us and serve my friends water (without their prior approval or request) is not acceptable or ethical. Although it's a bit on the pricey side, which is expected in a hip area, they serve delicious and interesting cocktails and pretty good food here! I am not a drinker, but the cocktail menu looked so interesting that I had to order one to share with my friend! They even had a cocktail that was limited to two per person maybe because of the strong alcohol content. So if you have the tolerance, go for it! We ordered a variety of stuff, and most of the dishes tasted pretty good. I would not say it was omg so good, but the menu was pretty creative and we enjoyed the meal a lot. Some of the dishes can be spicy, which is usual for Indonesian food, so just be careful with the spice level that you are ordering. I don't have a dish that I can rave about, but everything we had tasted decent so be adventurous! It's a very neat place to hang out with a group of friends. This review refers to completely their food! Came as a group of three and we are seated at the back dinning area. Proper. Starters are plenty and we can't resist Satay screwers. Grilled pork belly, not too big neither too small. And the peanut sauce sweet and greasy. Then we move on to the fried long beans. Simple, comfort and soul. Mains we got grilled barramundi. An entire beautiful piece and with paste in the middle. I fancy it!! Also reasonably priced at $275. Good deal. Suckling pig is the signature. Crispy skin and melting layers. I will give this dish a 5.5 ! Desserts are also highlight. Definitely we are talking about quality here. The sticky rice, mango ice,panda leave based sauce. And the presentation is lovely to heart. I'd like to give 3.5 but tonight 3 will suffice. Popped in without a reservation and were given a table at the open kitchen counter. Happy with this because it's interesting to watch chefs at work. Waitress was very pleasant although we received a dish we hadn't ordered. This was removed from the bill so no harm done. Overall we came here for the food, and that's why I give three stars. I quite enjoyed the food, Aubergine, Beef Rendang, and Pork Belly Satay - these stood out for me. Ordered some Sambal although despite the chillis it wasn't spicy enough. Rice in a pot was a tad on the dry side - might be better if more freshly prepared and served in a warm pot. Disappointed :( Maybe I had my hopes too high, but when I heard that Bali's famous beach club has opened in hk, I couldn't help but to imagine beach chairs, sand and drinks with cute little umbrellas in them. Verdict: Another overpriced SE Asian restaurant in the newly gentrified SYP-hipsterviile. My two stars go to the nonexistent service and mediocre food and service. I visited Potato Head twice, both times with zero reservation. The first time I was turned away, but the second time I got lucky and was seated (with the caveat that I had to vacate my table by a specific time). "No problem," I said, and was promptly seated. Here's what I thought: (1) The food was amazing. We ordered several dishes, some from the regular menu and some from the bar menu. All were completely on point, well-proportioned, incredibly spiced, and outrageously delicious. My favorites were Terong Balado and the Mie Gomak (especially this one). (2) The servers were awesome. Both our main server and the additional server (who delivered a few dishes) were friendly, chill, and knowledgeable. Could not have appreciated them more. (3) This place is loud, not great for kids, and has a too-cool-for-school vibe that you'll either love or hate. I honestly felt as if I was not hip enough for this restaurant (seriously, I'm not). There were lots of well-dressed ex-pats (mostly Brits), and a huge hen party (also dressed to the nines) there at 7pm on a Tues night. (4) This place is crowded. Some notes: -Although I brought 3 young children to this restaurant, this is not really a good or welcoming place for kids. I'd say if your kids are super mature and worldly, they could handle it, but if they're not, take a pass. We struggled a bit, and while we enjoyed ourselves, only our oldest kid felt the same. -It's loud. The music is great, but it's really hard to hear in here. Be aware of this -You really need a reservation. Make one and confirm it. -The hostess is formal in a way that the wait staff is not. But the food...amazing. read more

Ask your server about the music room as you pay your check and if you are lucky the will walk your down a maze of black walled hallways until you enter beautiful decorated music lounge hide away. Well, the first bad review I have ever written. It is a real shame that I feel it necessary to write all this as I have been to that restaurant many times and I (used to) really like it - they offer good vegan food (something not common in Hong Kong) and have a great vibe. I have tried to summarise the events as 3 main grievances. The first is an honest mistake, but the second and third are verging on unforgivable in my opinion: Grievance 1) My pregnant partner and I ordered 2 mocktails specifying 'without egg whites' (for those wondering, it is common for cocktails to contain egg whites to make them creamier). Instead, we were given strong cocktails, probably containing raw egg, but I can't say for certain. I feel like such a fool looking back on it now; I even said to my partner, 'Wow, the cinnamon really does make it taste alcoholic'. She commented on how authentic hers tasted too, we were pleasantly surprised and drank at least an inch each within a few minutes (it was a hot day and we had walked from central!). Of course, with hindsight, it was in fact terrible that a pregnant vegan woman was given alcohol (and potentially raw eggs) and her sober-for-11-month partner (me) was given the same. Now, I have worked as a waiter/bartender for 5 years and I understand that mistakes happen. Giving someone the wrong drink is not ideal, but nor is it the end of the world... However, how things were handled after this is atrocious, which brings me onto: Grievance 2) Upon reflection, I am trying to give the waitress the benefit of the doubt, but I believe that she simply lied to my face and then caused further negligence by leaving us with one of the strong cocktails (which we continued to drink, about another inch, before we called her over and told her that it was alcoholic). The events happened as follows: We were having a good evening, sipping away our nice cold drinks when we were flanked by our waitress hurriedly snatching away a, unbeknownst to us, "Dark and Stormy" (not a cinnamon mocktail). Of course I wondered what she was doing... she rushed back with a mocktail and told me that this in fact was my drink. My puzzled look on my face impelled her to declare, 'Don't worry, it was also a mocktail.' (I think she knew that it was alcoholic, therefore this was a flat-out lie). To make matters worse, she left the other cocktail with my pregnant parter... but returned minutes later with another mocktail for her. She assured us that there had been a mix-up and that all three drinks on the table now were mocktails - but it turns out that negligence follows negligence because, of course, one of them was a rum something (in the heat of the moment, I can't remember the name). At this point we were thinking, 'Oh well, they gave us the wrong mocktail, I hope it didn't contain raw egg, but at least they have tried to make things right by leaving us with three mocktails... supposedly the third one is on the house to atone for their mistake.' We tried to put all of this behind us and just enjoy ourselves. After another 5 minutes of sipping the drink she was left with, she started feeling a little light-headed. She asked me to try it. I did and as I did, I noticed that the garnishes were different to the mocktail it was supposed to be identical to. I tried the two side by side and I also started wondering if I was feeling a bit tipsy too (like I said, I had already drunk an inch of "Dark and Stormy"). We called the waitress over, her shift-manager (I assume) also joined and they tried the cocktails. The shift-manager confirmed, without hesitation, that it was the "Rum-Something-Or-Other". I asked her what the one in the copper cup was and she informed me that it was the "Dark and Stormy" and that both were alcoholic. My heart dropped! I made eye contact with my partner, before turning back to the two members of staff and re-informing them (we mentioned that we were pregnant and not drink when we came in) that she is pregnant... and has had 1-2 inches of 2 strong cocktails. As if things could get worse (they very much did), that brings me onto: Grievance 3) They tried to appease us by giving us... drum roll please... tap water! Now, I don't frankly care that it is "double filtered" or whatever, making up for everything above by offering us some complimentary water was simply insulting. As I said, I worked in hospitality for 5 years and if I had ever given a pregnant woman alcohol, (not to mention giving raw egg whites to a couple of vegans) I would, AT A MINIMUM, tell them that this round was "on me". But no, all we got was a "Sorry, here is some free water... enjoy your drinks, they are probably what you ordered, along with your almost ~$200 tab". We barely touched our drinks, stood up (feeling a little tipsy!) and walked out. As I walked down the street, I couldn't help but feel like I were intentionally misled. I had the waitress's voice ringing in my head, "Don't worry, it was also a mocktail"... Yeah right! read more

Awesome ambiance with great drinks and a nice happy hour from 5-8pm on select cocktails that all tasted great. Bartenders are clearly skilled and knowledgeable. We ordered the tuna appetizer which was like a citrus poke...refreshing and tasty. Worth checking out. read more

Food is good overall but eating there was a bit like a feeding factory: you are served all the dishes at once. We were four and ordered maybe 10-12 dishes, and we barely started to drink our pre-dinner drink and everything arrived straight away altogether. At potato head it needs to be quick: hence you eat too quickly and the dishes get cold under the air conditioner. You eat in a rush because they want to increase the turnover and it's a pity because I wish I could enjoy the food which is actually pretty good. read more

First time having Indonesian food and have to say it's very flavorful... Almost too flavorful! Quite spicy as well so be warned. The eggplant that many rave about was only okay, we would not order it next time. The pork belly was fantastic and a must. The mixed vegetables was also very good as well as the fish fillet. Don't get the Coco Loco drink just get the regular coconut as you can't taste the sugar or the citrus at all. I would honestly have given them a 4 but service fell short. They messed up a couple items in our order and overall not all that friendly. Still, nice vibe and interesting menu. read more

When we heard the infamous Balinese outlet has opened its doors in HK and in our neighbourhood, we decided to give it a try. After all, we did spend our NYE in Potato Head in Bali a few years ago and it was amazingly memorable. The interior decor was lovely - good vibe and decent looking young crowd from the neighbourhood. We sat up at the open kitchen bar - and ordered up the Sambal Eel (deliciously tender and moist), Pork Belly Satay (fabulous - though the kicap manis / sweet soy sauce could be spiced up a little bit more), Egg Tofu (they earlier confused my order with a salad), Sambal Aubergine (beautiful!), Beef Rendang and rice. I added an extra order of Sambal Matah as that was recommended as being the spiciest (though it was far from it - ask for additional chilli sauce if you're a spice head). Alas, the Rendang arrived first with the rice prior to the rest of the starters. Pot of rice was cold and rice was on the dry side (tip for the chef: serve the rice in a hot claypot instead to keep it warm). Rendang was a saving grace - tender, moist and had a good representation of the right spices. Our waiter got one of our starters wrong (coincidentally when we ordered, my husband mentioned he was dubious of waiters in non-Michelin star restaurants who do not write down orders). Overall, the food was decent enough for the HK palate and the hype of a new gig in a cool neighbourhood - not a place you would go if you are a fan of true Indonesian/Balinese food. There are way better Indonesian/Balinese restaurants in HK at half the price and way better service deserving of the Balinese hospitality we have all experienced, enjoyed and respect. After all the hype, we were looking forward to feeling a bit "Potato Head in Bali". We were hoping for an enjoyable night out with good Indonesian food, some great music and that buzz which made Bali Potato Head such fun. The total experience was a disappointment, with nothing really to recommend about it. There were irritating things which might or might not be us being unlucky or a reflection on the management style. Time will tell us which, I suppose. The booking system is clearly a mess. We had booked in person and wrote down our email address into the book ourselves. You need to give them your email as they send you an email confirmation to secure the booking. After a few days and no email confirmation, we phoned to check and were informed that our booking did not exist. There was no real apology or attempt to explain this. On booking again, we were told that we had to give up our table at 9pm for other guests. On arrival, we were seated at a large bench in front of the kitchen area. There were some individual tables in the adjoining room which looked more spacious and comfortable. We were not offered any choice of where to sit on either of the two times we had booked. From what we overheard as the staff showed other customers their seats, it was obvious that the other room was the "better" place. Our waitress spilled the first dish as she put it down on the table. Quite a lot of the food fell onto the wooden table. Some of it managed to tip onto one of our plates such was her clumsiness. This was tidied up and the dish came back a few minutes later, I thought there was less food in the dish compared with the same dish handed over to the people next to us on the bench. Most of the dishes were quite small and though they were ok, just ok. The duck dish was rather lacking in flavour and the duck was quite dry. The beef rendang was chewy and lacking in flavour, the beef texture was too dry and rather tasteless. I thought it was one of the worse beef rendangs I've eaten in Hong Kong. I can't recommend this place for Indonesian food, almost anywhere else does it better. The piped music was loud and made conversation difficult as you had to shout across the bench to be heard. As the other customers were doing the same, it got noisier. The older couple next to us looked uncomfortable and rather glum as they quickly ate their meal and left. I think the tables next door were obviously better if you don't want to have to shout and you want a comfortable seat. Around 8:35pm we were reminded that we had to finish up and leave the table as they wanted it back by 8:50pm to "clear up" in time for the next customers. By this time there were quite a few empty seats on our bench, so this seemed a little unnecessary and rude for the staff to do this. We moved away to the bar area with our drinks. The bar area was also pretty quiet with plenty of empty seats available. Around 9:30pm, we had a peak into the restaurant to see how busy it was. There was not a single customer on our bench! So why had we been hustled out so sharply? I doubt that there had ever been any bookings at 9pm. The bench could seat at least 20 people, maybe even 30 people. Did they all cancel at the same time? So many no shows? After all this was a mid week evening, not a busy time at all. While we were seated in the bar area, we were continually asked whether we wanted to order more drinks. I suspect that the restaurant pushes customers to eat and move on quickly. They don't want you to sit too comfortably or too long. Then they want you to keep buying drinks and spending money, if you're thinking of hanging around. In conclusion, don't go there expecting to feel like you're in Bali. It wasn't relaxing, the service was not so warm and the food was overpriced for the quality and quantity. I felt less like a welcomed customer and more like a revenue producing unit. read more

I'd been meaning to try Kaum at Potato Head in Sai Ying Pun after a colleague recommended it a few months ago and finally got round to booking dinner whilst a family member was visiting Hong Kong. Wow! Thrilled to have finally been. The entrance is deceiving with the space spanning the whole length of the building and split into a bar, coffee shop and restaurant area. Funky and authentic interior. The food was amazing and reasonably priced. For a party of 3 we ordered Gado Gado Kaum (a salad with a delicious cashew-peanut based dressing and a variety of textures), Rendang Daging Sapi (tender braised beef, shredded and perfectly spiced), Sate Ayam Bumbu Kacang (authentic chicken satay), Sambal Ikan Asin (a traditional salted fish and red chilli condiment), Nasi Goreng Babi (the perfect comfort food with belly pork and sausage), Babi Guling (roasted baby pig with thin crispy skin - the only drawback with this dish is that it's quite fatty and rich but still very tasty) and Terong Balado (braised egg plant with chilli, garlic and shallots - yummy!). My only regret was that I couldn't try more of the dishes...Which means I will be returning for more soon! The bar looks like a chilled place for a mid-evening drink also.
