Service was attentive without it being overbearing--helpful with the dish selection as well. We thought the dishes were great from start to finish. The burrata was creamy, complimented by the tart and sweet grilled peach while being cut by the savory cured meats. I ordered the lamb medium-rare and really enjoyed how it was prepared, and the pasta dishes similarly turned out delicious. We felt like the presentation of the dishes were very thoughtful on top of its great taste. It was my first time dining at Pirata and I enjoyed the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. On this occasion, they were launching their weekly lunch buffet, which features a different selection of appetizers spread out beautifully. I am also big on dessert so the new tiramisu recipe was particularly noteworthy, standing out from others that I've tried. Good place to go in Wan Chai if you are looking for Italian food. The lunch and brunch menus come with a semi buffet which includes a variety of cold cuts, cheeses, & salads. If you have been to their sister restaurant Pici then you will be familiar with the flavor profiles here as a lot of the food is prepared similarly. The lunch set comes with a main and a choice of dessert. Food: 4 stars Service/environment: 3.75 stars Overall: 4 stars Recommendations: meatballs, black truffle tagliatelle For my main course I had the black truffle which was really nice. A healthy portion of fresh shaved truffle I paired with fresh pasta in a cream sauce. Really tasty and the type of pasta I like to eat. The dessert was decent and is an acceptable tiramisu. Came here for dinner and ended up getting the chef's tasting menu-which it seems like they don't do anymore. They guaranteed that we'd get the steak-which was never a deal breaker in the first place but that's fine. What we got was a pretty good mix of their menu at the time. I really liked the arancini, but it's fried balls of carbs so who can mess that up, right? Well, the tagliatelle with truffles was done really well, probably because all their pasta is made in house and it really had the al dente chewiness that can't be replicated without doing it by hand. We had a few other dishes and were basically stuffed when they rolled out the flank steak. I like flank steak in general, it's got that right mix of flavor when done well and Pirata does theirs well. Friday night was busy. Many office workers came here to unwind and couples on their dates. We came to break our Asian food routine. The service was a little inconsistent. Placed our order, bread came first but our wine and beer didn't arrive until we reminded the waitress. Water however was consistently topped up without prompting. The cold cut board came followed by mussels. I thought they should have come out together since they were both appetisers. Our mains of orecchiette and lasagna also came with time gap. The food overall was tasty but service was a little chaotic with drink servers running around bumping into patrons. My friend and I got went with Grandma's Menu, which is where the chef recommends a couple dishes for your table. Best choice of the day. We started with their Vitello Tonnato. It was very flavourful and a light surprise. The veal was well seasoned. Next, came the octopus salad. It was as light and citrusy, and had good textures between the octopus and the potatoes. Then, was the black truffle tagliatelle. Can't really say how good it was because it literally was amazing. It was so rich and definitely one of the best items on the menu. Finally, we had the butcher's cut, which is a flank stank with a salad. I was really surprised at how flavourful and how tender the steak was. For dessert, they gave us a tiramisu, not too special. As others mention, this space feels decidedly New York City (and I'm a huge proponent of this type of buzzy, super alive atmosphere). While things may be loud and lively, you can rest easy knowing that operationally, everything runs like a well-oiled machine. All items on the menu are meant to be shared which I always find to be great fun. My friend and I decided to try the Italian sausage crostini, the burrata and parma ham, the octopus salad, the Butcher's cut (sliced flank steak served with cherry tomatoes atop a bed of rocket), and the tagliatelle with black truffle. While all the menu items satisfied our craving for well-done Italian, I'd recommend the burrata and parma, the Butcher's cut and any of their handmade pastas as the standouts. Yes: pasta made fresh every morning in Hong Kong! We washed it all down with a bottle of Barbera wine and unfortunately, we were far too stuffed to try dessert (yes, we over-ordered!). One of the very hip dinner spots in Wan Chai, located on the 29th floor. Be sure to make reservations during peak times. I made a reservation online on a Friday, and the earliest I could get was 9PM. The elevators open directly into the restaurant like most buildings in HK. We were there a few minutes early, but unfortunately our table was not ready. You can wait at the bar (which was packed) or at the rooftop which is a few flights of stairs up (be aware - no A/C up there). It's lit with green glowing lamps on each table, and you get some pretty nice views of HK from several vantage points. They have a more limited bar with some appetizers up there. This part of my experience was the only reason I'm docking a star. We waited 35-40 minutes before we were called down, and it could've been longer if we hadn't constantly been asking the staff about the status of our table. It felt like they completely forgot about us. Other than the disorganized seating management, everything else at this place is fantastic. They play chill pop/jazz music at a reasonable volume, with a dimly lit atmosphere, and more importantly, the food was great. Appetizer: Beef strips with tuna sauce layered on top. Innovative and surprisingly good combination. Pappardelle with beef ragu: texture of the pasta was just right and the stewed beef was nice and tender. It's a bit salty if you eat the beef alone, but have it together with the pappardelle and it's perfect! Gnocchetti with pistachio sauce and prawns: also a very nice mixture of flavors. Consistency of the pasta worked very well with the pistachio sauce. Prawns felt a bit overcooked, but it was a small detail. I would definitely make some more visits in the future, hopefully I'll have a better experience their maitre d' next time. read more

At the time of my writing this review, this restaurant had only been open for 3-4 months. I've only visited once so here it goes: Our reservation was at 9:00 pm. We arrived at 9:30 pm. Oops!!! Luckily, they still held our table. So, the manager takes our order. I guess they want the boss to be more connected to the guests? Cool! So we order the steak. Forgot what it's called but it's cut into nice rectangular pieces and arranged in a circle and topped with arugula and cherry tomatoes. This dish was very good! Juicy!!!! We also had the pasta with sausage- a full serving. Also very good and the pasta was just right- al dente!! We had a salad also - veggies are cut into cubes with mozzerella balls. It kind of reminded me of a Greek salad. On to dessert!!!! I can't remember what our desert was called, but it had lots of nuts, had a texture or ice cream ( but it wasn't ice cream) and drizzled with chocolate! Ohhhh so good! So I asked when we were seated for gluten free options and they had a manager come over and assure me that the gluten free pasta had minimal contamination. They even had gluten free bread which is baked in a different oven. The brought me my own basket of two rolls for before the meal. I also had their octopus salad and it was a great start not too big but not leaving you too hungry. I then had the truffle pasta with their gluten free option and it was great! Brought the bf here for his 24th birthday! Ambiance was modern and sleek, nice view of the skyscrapers through the floor to ceiling windows. We ordered Hennessy sidecars but got served Hennessy neat. We didn't mind all that much as our appetite was voracious so we proceeded to order. For appetizers we got the carpaccio and bruschetta. Bruschetta was flavorful, bread was crunchy and carpaccio melted in our mouths. For our entrees we chose the liquid Parmesan raviolini and tagliatelle with black truffle. Both were marvelous in flavor but the portions were a bit small. The best part of all was the tiramisu dessert! A generous piece with all the flavor components I would expect. My European expat friends rave about this place and there's no question why they do! We came here for lunch where they have a massive spread of Antipasti. The selection ranges from various cheeses to deli meats to breads to salads. To be honest, this alone is enough for unambitious eaters to gorge on but we were ready for the decadence of our main course. We chose the Butcher's Cut and the Tagliatelle with black truffle. The flank steak was perfectly grilled at a pink medium rare and rested on a bed of rocket and cherry tomatoes. The succulence of the meat balanced well with the fresh greens and the explosion of flavour from the tomatoes added another level to the dish. The Tagliatelle was cooked perfectly al dente and you could tell it was hand made as the thick pasta did not clump together. Shaved black truffles generously covered the pasta allowing an aroma of flavour to fill the air. The addition of the white truffle paste completed the pasta well and did not overwhelm my tastebuds with too much truffle flavour. We finished with a Cafe Affogato which gave me the kick I needed to continue my day, while the cool vanilla ice cream helped to bring the meal to a sweet ending. The venue is set over a spacious 2 floors and the waiters are nice and joked with us every time I responded with how much I liked the food. I'm not sure if I liked this place so much because I was expecting so little (after-all in Hong Kong there are hundreds of restaurants which serve under-par, bland truffle dishes with disrespectful service) but there was honestly not a single point of the meal which I could fault. In addition, for HKD 248, in Hong Kong you could easily pay triple/quadruple the price for the amount and quality of food that we ate so the pricing is also very, very fair. All in all, the meal was a perfect balance and I cannot wait to come back for more! read more

Best bottomless brunch in Hong Kong. The meal is served family style with pre-selected appetizers and a buffet of antipasti. The asparagus flan is especially unique and amazing - something that would be a major challenge to recreate at home. Each person can select an individual entree, but I think it's best for them to be shared. Desserts also come family style. Fantastic service and beautiful views. What a fantastic restaurant! My boyfriend and I booked a table online (I love when restaurants have that feature) and headed in for what would be a delicious Italian dinner with superb service! The space itself is marvellous. Reminds me of something you'd find in New York, actually. It's two levels with the top being more for small bites and drinks, and more formal dining downstairs. We enjoyed a flavourful caprese salad (tomato, basil and mozzarella). I'm not huge on tomatoes, but these were divine. You can definitely taste the quality. For our mains we shared a half order of The Butchers' Cut flank steak. HOLY MOLY. Soooo delicious. The half order isn't on the menu, but the waitress was nice enough to mention it to us (since we are fatties and wanted to try EVERYTHING :)) For pastas I got the tagliatelle with black truffle... do I even need to exclaim how delicious it was? BLACK TRUFFLE. i die. Boyfran got the purple potato gnocchi which I was also totally into, and I didn't think I would be. It had a really nice sweetness to it! On top of the great service and the lovely atmosphere, the prices are SO reasonable. TLDR: Great food (I think the owner said the chef is from southern Italy), great view, great atmosphere, but most importantly, GREAT owner. Walking up an extremely steep hill in SOHO to get to the green minibus stop which would get me here, I wondered to myself, "Why Italian? My best friend's family is from Sicily, I get amazing Italian all the time." This was my first time taking a bus in HK, but certainly not my last. I felt bold. Bold enough to ignore Google Maps' suggested bus routes. And I almost ended up in Happy Valley. But I still managed to get to the restaurant on time--10 minutes early, even. But my companion was even earlier. Drats. I decided to blame the bus driver and not my sense of adventure. What does all this have to do with Pirata? Absolutely nothing. But I'm supposed to be writing a paper and not a Yelp review. We decided to get the tasting menu, since it was our first time there. I was distracted the entire meal by how awesome a spot it was: the 30th floor of the building with a north-eastern view, so you could see across the bay. I guess I forgot to mention it was my first time in HK (I was visiting for a week). The owner came by with the wine list, giving an excellent Italian alternative to a Cabernet Sauvignon (they didn't have any cabs there). He personally guaranteed that if the bottle was not to our liking, he'd be more than happy to take it home and drink it himself and not charge us a dime (or in this case, HK$1). Needless to say, he did not have the chance to bring that bottle of wine home. The five course tasting menu came with dishes I don't even remember, except that they were all excellent. Especially the dessert. Did the wine have an effect? Sure. Were the glittering lights of Tsim Sha Sui a distraction? Possibly. But my taste buds were more than satisfied--happy even--with the food. Came here for a company dinner and was thoroughly impressed by the food. The cocktails sounded intriguing but didn't live up to the expectation, particularly the Torino-Tokyo. But that was a minor point next to the great food: Of particular note on the food side were the Vitello Tonnato (veal, tuna, capers, mayo), which was dynamite on their fresh bread, and The Butchers Cut, which is a gloriously seared yet rare flank steak. The pasta, as in the noodles themselves, was very nicely done - I forget the style we had but we were all impressed by the noodles. The risotto was very good, I typically avoid ordering it as it is easy to screw up, but they did an excellent job. However, the gnocchi left us divided, some raved about the sauce but it wasn't very special for me. Desserts were good, but the standout by far was the Tiramisu. The Sunday brunch was fantastic. I struck up a conversation with the bartender who really looked like she enjoyed her job. She kindly gave me some book recommendations about learning to make drinks, turns out two of the books were written by my friends. The assistant manager also talked about how great it is to work at a place where the food is something to be proud of. Oh and the duck ragu pasta was one of the best I ever had. For a family style restaurant, the portion sizes were too small. The food was really tasty and unique. Presentation was good. My three rating is based on service. Our main course arrived 30 minutes after we were done eating the other courses. They apologized for the delay but only when asked why it was taking so long. Long overdue review. I organized a VERY impromptu group dinner here in August for ~25 people after reading some good reviews. What a great choice. The staff was so welcoming and accommodating. I really appreciated all the time they spent coordinating menu options beforehand and how attentive they were to my entire party once we arrived. (Thanks Manuel!) The restaurant space was very cool. Located on a high floor in their building, the ambiance is eclectic/industrial. Lots of unique table set-ups. I'm New Jersey-Italian, and pretty snobby with Italian food. This is the best I've found in the HK/Shenzhen area. Since we were a big group, we ate family-style. The Vitello Tonnato was a huge hit, even amongst picky eaters. The MMM (meatballs) was great too! The meatballs and tiramisu were the best I've ever had. It put the food aside- the service is what makes this place unique. The level of service provided is second to none.
