What a disappointment. If you know Greek desserts, steer clear. Overpriced beyond all reason, but still gave some pieces a shot... Koulourakia? Dry, but ok flavor. The real disaster is the syrup. The finikia were inedible because of how bitter the syrup was--and at $4 a cookie, that's so frustrating. The kataifi was lost to the same cause. Do they steep 100 cloves in the syrup? I just do not understand. The finiki seemed tasteless but fine-ish until that bitterness from the syrup kicked in at the end. Woof. read more

How big do you want your strudel? Sugar powder added? As introduced, these two are the most common question being asked at this Greek bakery; as everything can be customized based on needs. Strudel is one of their signatures, and it has a selection of flavors - strawberry, pineapple, cherry; with or without cheese. Not a big cheese fan, I opted for the apricot strudel, which was a bit on the sour side. Greek pastry, to me is a new (yet successful) try. Apricot paste was carefully covered by the crispy bread crust - well done! read more

I love the fact this place is a family run business and the owners are still here in NYC making pastries. This is a great place to run in and bring something back home or to the office. There are no tables to sip coffee and have dessert. First the spanakopita is everything everyone says, made with love. I also grabbed a cookie called a Finika (all hand written signs, so cute) Which has almond and honey filling. I love that my mom is half Greek and half Italian. If there was a time machine, I would take my mom and grandmother here shopping for Friday night pastries. There isn't one so just walking into this store gives me a childhood vibe of granny. This Greek bakery has both savory and sweet classic Greek goods. There are no frills here, just an authentic bakery with a warm, old school, family vibe. They let the treats speak for themselves. And, though some items hard to pronounce, they do...in Greek, of course.  I've had many Baklavas in my day, and, I figured that an authentic Greek Bakery is where I should be trying new things. First, I tried Afali (fun fact: it means "birds nest"), which has a roll of chopped pistachios surrounded by phyllo and dipped in honey. It tastes just as good as it sounds, maybe better. The honey soaked phyllo is slightly crisp and tender at the same time, covering a mound of chopped pistachios that balance out the sweetness. Then, I got Galaktoboureko, a rich custard wrapped in phyllo. This was awesome too. Again, you have that great sweetness and texture of the phyllo, and then theres a slightly sweet and creamy custard that I would describe as almost tapioca like. I recommend using a fork to dig in. read more

A family run bakery with a long history in Hell's Kitchen! After many visits over the course of 2012 to Poseidon, it struck me that one of their secrets to success is their customer service. Simply put: every time you step in, you feel like you're being welcomed into someone's home. All the staff members, young and old know how to greet a customer like they've known them forever. It's a very particular knack that they've clearly developed over the years of being in business, and I have to say it's extraordinary to experience. The quality of the goods here has not diminished. I continue to crave their Finikia and I recently tried their Prune pastry which was really nicely baked. Crispy on the outside, but chewy on the inside and the prunes were not overwhelming. I've also finally tried their baklava which is *not* pistachio based but rather has almonds and walnuts but it's absolutely delicious. I also got to try one of their brittles (it was either peanut or almond, tough to tell since it was broken up in a tray already) and it was good, but not the best brittle ever. Still, I'm not sure brittle is the reason I'd push people to come back. No, it would be for the dozen plus other awesome items they bake daily! read more

I've walked by this place so many friggen times trying to get a taste of their pastries but was unable to since they were closed. I finally was able to check them out today, and it was worth it. Note: they are closed Sunday and Mondays. I think everything in here is made with phyllo pastry, I'm surprised the coffee isn't made with it. I can't remember what everything was called, but it is pretty tasty. Pretty much everything consisted of phyllo dough, almond, pistachio, and honey. Yum. I don't think you can really go wrong with anything here, although I wish they offered smaller pieces at smaller prices, or a sampler set. If you're like me and can't decide on anything, you'll probably order one of everything. At $3-5 a piece for pretty much everything in here, you're going to walk out of here a bit poorer, but quite happy once you eat these sweets. read more

If you're looking for a spanakopita, this is the place to go. They use light and crunchy phyllo to make most of their food. My family's friend recommended us to this Greek Bakery and I'm so glad they did. The service is great and they usually ask if you want your food heated up. The prices are affordable and the place is clean. I highly recommend! read more

Shut the front door! This bakery is the real deal. Take a little walk to the lovely Greek bakery in the heart of New York. As you enter, you'll be taken back to a time when the bakery goods were made by scratch using Yaya's family recipes and the baker actually remembers your name! This is a place where you're not just a number, but rather you'll feel like you're a customer that's been coming for years even if its your first time. Welcome to the "Good ol' days"! If you're looking for the ultimate comfort dessert, a dessert that's creamy and melts in your mouth then you have to order a Galaktoboureko. I can't tell you how to pronounce it, but what I can tell you is it'll haunt you in your dreams! When I purchased one it was cold. Not being able to wait, I took a bit and it was delicious. Then I decided to ask the owner if he had a microwave to warm it. He said, "No microwave, only oven. Give me 10 minutes, it'll be perfect." He was right. Perfection. Just between you and me, even though I love this place, my husband and I agree that my Spanakopita is better. Just preference I'm sure. read more

This is a great little Greek bakery when you're looking for a fast snack on the go. All sorts of handheld nibbles ranging in varying degrees of sweet and savory options. I opted for the ground beef pastry puff, and it was just the in-between bite I was hoping for midday before heading into a late dinner. It's clear it's a family run restaurant, and the woman working the front was a warm, welcoming presence. If i lived in the area, there's no doubt I'd return often. read more

Literally the best bakery I have ever been to, no exaggeration. My boyfriend doesn't even like pastry and he loves this place. It's family run, everything baked with love and it shows! Perfect balance of pastry and filling, if you get the spinach feta pastry, it's 70-80% filling with just the right amount of buttery, flaky pastry keeping it together. We ordered 8 different pastries/halva here and loved everything! And the prices are much lower than I would have expected for that quality of food in NYC. I cannot mention a single thing that could be improved, it's just perfect! Any time friends visit NYC, I'll be sending them to this hidden gem!! read more

Location: poseidon really stands out in Hell's Kitchen area. Their light blue sign has been attracting my attention for a long time. But I do not know why I never pluck my courage to take a look at the store. Nevertheless, finally, I am here. This place is pretty small and i doubt that there is any seat available to sit and eat. So it is a perfect place to grab and to go. Food: of course, I tried their meat pie as well as spinach pie. In addition, I got the pineapple cheese strude?! I love their meat pie but I am addicted to the cheese pineapple thing. It is not too sweet, creamy, stuff with texture, omg, the best thing I ever had so far among all bakeries in NYC. The only thing I wish they could improve is their spinach pie. I really would love to have more cheese textures mixed with spinach. Oh, and the crust is cripsy and de'icious. I am really thinking about going back again and craving some more. Price and service: the guy is nice and welcomg and answered so many my questions. My only concern with this store is their price. Although portion is big, the price is still pricy as a bakery shop. Overall: a 4.5 stars. And by the time I am writing my review, I am already thinking about going back and have some again. Truth must be told written w/ no pleasure, rather great dissapointment + surprize. Treated w/ unfounded disrespect anger + a aggresive questionable mental demeanor by one of *Lillys' sons (as she unfortunately simply let this offensive action towards a customer occur + stayed out of site ) after simply inquiring when a pastry might be finished baking in the oven- after being told 45 minutes prior (as I waited patiently there in the bakery pleasantly speaking w/ Lily) it would take only 40 minutes..The son had a crazy violent look in his eyes. left immediately. very nice staff and great baked goods, love the baklava and the place is very traditional, loved everything, thank you!

What a find in Hell's Kitchen. We were having an afternoon get together and lo and behold, my oven ended up broken just in time for the event. Wanting something special as a substitute to homemade, Poseidon Bakery came up in a yelp search of the area. We chanced it and got a wide array of baklava, strudel and any treat in the shop that appealed. The baklava in particular was INCREDIBLE. Friends I haven't seen eat anything with sugar since 1998 sighed with joy from the first bite to the last. This is one incredible bakery. I highly recommend you come hungry and ready to buy for a small army, because you are going to want to try everything in the shop. Thanks for saving the day! read more

This place is like walking into someone's home, warm and friendly. They have a huge selection of different types of sweets, I picked out seven different kinds and three of them I really enjoyed, the galaktobureko, and the triangular shaped one and a round one with pistachio on top (idk the names). The others were good too. The lady who served me was so nice, she let me take my time and told me what each dessert was and put on a fresh pot of coffee for me! THIS IS NOT A DRILL: Poseidon makes the best thing I have ever eaten, and any prior claims made about the best thing I've ever eaten have been recanted. They shall all be made null and void, effectively immediately. Enter: the galaktoboureko, warm and fresh from the oven. Holy actual mother of jeebus what in the whaaat sweet baby elvis oh my freakin' jahosefat is this real life? I could totally be celibate forever as long as forever included unlimited access galaktobourekos. Warm, spiced custard, flaky phyllo dough... anything I describe won't even sort of do it justice. Pleasure-seekers of all shapes and shoe sizes, enlightenment is inside a bakery on 9th ave. In addition to the best thing that ever happened, close runner-ups include the afali, or a massive clusterf*ck of chopped pistachios wrapped in phyllo dough and doused in ambrosia, as well as the "strudel," more fondly known as the phyllo-wrapped apricot cheesecake wedge of sex. These two, plus a galaktoboureko, make up my official "Last Meal on Earth." The trigona was like baklava with a better flavor (marzipan and fig, oh hell to the yes) but a mushier texture, and the finikia seemed like an acquired taste.... but with everything else in Poseidon, I'm not sure why I'd waste my time acquiring anything but more galaktobourekos, afalis, and pieces of strudel. If I could give Poseidon six stars, just to emphasize how much better it is than everything and everywhere else, I would. read more

"The only place in the city that still uses hand rolled phyllo dough", is a notable assertion about Poseidon bakery that comes up frequently in food centered blogs and tours. Life is better served by asking the right questions, and the appropriate one here should be: does that assertion really matter?? It doesn't when it comes to taste, or at least I couldn't appreciate it with the phyllo layers lacking the necessary crispness that add alluring sound and not just layers of texture to the bite. I can't really fault them on this as moisture works over time, causing texture later in the day to be much different from that when the tray of Spanakopita or Baklava or Trigona comes fresh out of the oven. Authentic. The first word that would come to my mind about Poseidon. This is a bakery that has stuck true to tradition 90 years from the date it opened in NYC, even though the fourth generation currently runs it. They make no compromises. I mean NONE. While they will serve you a conceptually similar pastry, Afali (rolled pastry of pistachios, phyllo and honey - similar to the Saragli in construction), they will NOT carry Pistachio Baklava. That to them is a heresy, as traditional Baklava is meant to be made from ground walnuts - not Pistachio. Fiercely patriotic, the owner explained to me that Lebanese and Turks might carry Pistachio Baklava, not the Greeks - ignoring my observation that other Greek Bakeries in Astoria feel no compulsion in carrying six different versions of Baklava. I respect their philosophy, for it is not easy not to compromise, when everyone else around you has already done so in order to stay relevant to contemporary tastes. I do think that their traditional pastries and cookies (like Melomakarona) taste different, mostly lighter, from other versions in the city, and certainly the Melomakarona isn't as sandy in texture as some others. While I am not really a fan (other than of the Spanakopita), and feel that other bakeries have pulled ahead of them over the years, I am still rounding up from 3.5 stars - in a nod to their Manhattan history and unyielding principles. read more

When I walked into Poseidon bakery today, I felt like I had just stumbled into a bit of heaven. Tucked away between various little shops on a busy street, Poseidon is a tiny little kitchen full of wonderful smells and even better tastes, as you'll discover later. You might feel at a loss of what to choose, as everything looks strange and the names are so foreign, but the guy behind the counter is so helpful; with a warm, greek smile he encourages questions and offers advice while making you feel welcome in his store. If you have never tried greek pastries before, I would definitely recommend the simple, classic tyropita and spanakopita, meaning cheese pie and spinach pie. Each one comes in a small hand size portion, perfect for a quick snack or even a full lunch if you combine it with some delicious baklava or other sweet delicacies you can find here for dessert. At only $3.50 each, Poseidon will also be a personal savior to your wallet. Small and sweet, warm and understated, just like Greece, this place might not catch your eye at first, but once you seek it out and get to know it, it will offer you such valuable goodies, you'll feel lucky to know of its existence and to be a part of its legacy. read more

Zeus himself would have picked up a baklava (from here) eat it, then proceed to make a yearlong spring+summer as the satisfaction from it would make you feeling so good. That's how good the baklava is. I went to almost every single place that serves baklava from European cafes, commonplace bakeries, specialty bake shops, Istanbul cafes, to health food stores, and Mediterranean cuisine shops, to Turkish restaurants and none of them came close to the quality of the baklava they served up here. It is such nutty and sweet goodness that falls apart in your mouth along with a silent sounding crunch. The place has been around for about a century and has been passed from generation down to generation-tell me that's not proof that they are serving up quality products. In addition to baklava, they have all kinds of other delicious Greek/Mediterranean pastries like flogeras, trigonas, finikas, afalis, to poppy seed strudels and rich cream cheese cherry strudels to homely apple strudels. For more filling foods, they got awesome spanakopitas, menina mashes, to kreatopias and another type of pie. The coffee is so smooth and mild you can actually fall nicely to sleep after drinking it along with some of their hearty food. The workers are all very friendly and put up with all of my numerous questions about everything in the store from coffee, to pastry flavors, to pronunciation, to coffee pots. Anytime I come back to NYC, this place will be seeing me again. Me and my friend went almost every single day we were in NYC cause we couldn't get enough of their goody belly filling substances they carry in there read more

The fact that everything is home made and you are served by the sweetness of the family that established this little place, topped off that 5th star like a cherry on a cake. Baklava as plump as a hamburger! We were recommended a custard baklava type of pastry (sorry I don't know its formal name) as though the woman was a psychic and knew that I am a huge fan of custards. On the other hand I am not a fan of custards that reek and taste like scrambled eggs. So at the time it was a gamble. Let's just say it was right up there with best I have had in my life. Again topped with flaky phyllo (?) and honey.....holy yum. They also have savory items such as spinach pie and more. Can't wait to try that! So if you want to somewhere other than a diner to get your Greek on this is it! Just a tip...this is a "to go" place because its a bakery there is no seating. read more

The only missing thing from Poseidon Bakery?Oh, definitely not the 'awesome' Colombian coffee the sweet owner was upselling. "Oh! We have EXCELLENT coffee.Colombian! Great with Greek pastries!" And definitely not the friendly, 'home away home' hospitality. "All our pastries and savory items are baked on premise." And most definitely not the saccharine goodness behind showcase #1,2, 3... "This is made with honey, but these do not." Ok, the ONLY missing thing from this fine, local bakery is bread. Yes. If only they also sell loaves of freshly baked bread to complement the aroma of honey, butter, and sweet cheese emit from the the pastries, that would just be the perfect place to snack all day and night. But I am just being picky. There is nothing wrong with Poseidon. In fact, there is nothing it needs to change at all. While the prices are not "cheap" (a slice of small apple strudel ran me $3 and a spanakopita costs $4.5-5.5, depending on the filling). And the cookies are $18/lb. But I guess you just place a price on authentic foods. It's family recipes carried from generations to generations. Sure, chefs today proclaim this point on their websites or interviews, but the final dishes are still often tweaked a bit. But not Poseidon. Like a burly sea of water, it is unwielding, comfident, and calm. The proprietor knows she's the best out there, yet without a sense of arrogant. She treats every entering customers with the same respect and care. As a newbie, she patiently explains her products, like an educated teacher to a pupil. On a limited budget, I could only satisfy myself to a slice of apple strudel. The phyllo was crisp and not dried. The apple filling is not from a can and everything just arrived in such harmony without causing a cavity ache. Greek sweets are so under-appreciated. They might seems to be 'low-brow' to some, but with all the simple ingredients, like nuts, honey, butter, cream, and fruits, you could almost convince yourself that the dessert is actually 'good' for you. PS Do check out the cute artworks drawn by the granddaughter. Beats any million dollar worth of museum paintings at anytime. read more

This is a great little family-owned Greek bakery that sells all these homemade savory and sweet delights. I personally love that they make all types of fresh pastries like baklava, but with a variety of different nuts such as pistachio, almond, and pine nuts as well. I've also tried these round honey and almond cookies, which were really moist and more cake-like than anything. While I love that all the goodies here are very authentic and the people who run this place are friendly, their pastries definitely border on being too sweet for me. Because everything is soaked in honey, one little wedge is definitely too much for me to handle after a few bites. Prices are surprisingly steeper than you would expect from such a homey joint as well... grabbing a few pieces of pastries will run you up $15-20 before you know it. I'd probably continue to support this establishment and pop in once in a while when I'm in the mood for Greek delicacies anyway, just because it is in the neighborhood and I'd like to see a family-run joint stay in business. read more

They've been in business since 1923 and have a century old convection oven that helps them with their magic. I read about this place on Yelp, and went while working at Gourmet magazine, to buy treats for the Greek Board of Tourism as a thank you for advertising. Love the galaktoboureko here - very thick custard filling baked in a delicate phyllo crust. The spanakopita is delicious when served warm and would be even more enjoyable if it had slightly stronger seasoning (maybe just salt). The bakalava is a slice of heaven drenched in honey. The owners seem to operate store hours according to whim - more than a few times, I have traveled to the great Poseidon only to stare sadly at the metal security grille and a handwritten note taped to the glass door. If they set up a Twitter account updating their store hours, I'd award them another half star. read more

Obviously, since we were going to a Greek bakery, our mission was to try the famed spanakopita. I also planned to sample the almond and honey finika and trigona desserts, because I can't resist anything with almonds. After we arrived, we decided to also get the Kreatopita, which is a spiced meat phyllo pastry. I guess the food was good, but it was hard to really tell, as it was all unexpectedly ice cold. The food was sitting in chafing dishes, so I didn't think to ask if it needed to be warmed up. However, I think we made it pretty clear that we were planning on eating our food right away, and even asked the guy where we could find somewhere in the neighborhood to sit down and eat. Of course, the dude might not have been the brightest bulb in the box, as he felt compelled to inform us that restaurants with outdoor seating would not take kindly to our breaking out our meat and spinach pies. Uh, duh? We did end up finding a little park bench about half a block away in the end, thankfully, and were able to sit and enjoy our Greek treats. The spanakopita and kreatopita were nice and flakey, and the spinach and feta combo was typically delicious. I know that the trigona and finika are different desserts, but I can't really remember which one was which, only that both were pleasantly sweet and almondy, and that is enough. One was made with phyllo, and thus flakier, and the other was more cookie like. As for the two savory items, it really is a shame that the food was so cold. That really kind of ruined it for me. Maybe Poseidon Bakery generally assumes that their customers will reheat their food, but if you are serving your food out of chafing dishes, there is going to be an assumption that your food will be warm. And if you aren't serving hot food, it is common courtesy to ask your customers if they would like it reheated, even if you aren't an eat-in operation... I'd certainly be willing to go back and give Poseidon a shot at the proper temperature, but I really do feel that they dropped the ball on this one. Clueless service is never a good thing, but it is especially disappointing at an operation billed as family owned and operated. read more

Just a few weeks ago, a woman walked into a seminar I was in with an enormous piece of spanokopita. It looked plump and satisfying. She gave praise for a small Greek bakery just around the corner from us and I told myself I would pay it a visit next time I was in the neighborhood. That time came this morning. I walked in and perused the diverse selection of pastries from savory to sweet. As it was the morning I opted for the apple struedel. The man behind the counter asked if I wanted any coffee-"we make great coffee" he said-and I said yes. Both the pastry and the coffee exceeded my expectations by bounds. The coffee was probably the best drip coffee I have had in the city, very drinkable, not bitter at all with the deep chocolatey, earthy undertones you expect from good coffee. I could never drink drip coffee from anywhere else and be happy. The apple streudel was phenomenal. They do not skimp on filling-it was thick and oh so flavorful. The dough was light and fresh tasting. Before I left the store, I eyed the poppy-seed pastries by the register. I will have to start making up more excuses to spend time in Midtown just to make a stop at Poseidon Bakery. read more
