Very disappointed in the moussaka which is my go-to Greek dish. Here it was served in a round casserole bowl and too meager a serving for the price ($32?, I think). There was some cooked meat that tasted like ground beef, not lamb, and not enough of it. Where was the lamb? The portion was small and the seasoning was, to me, flat/not savory enough. There was very little eggplant, cut in small pieces and the bechamel on top wasn't rich or creamy. Really surprised. Very sorry to say this but Molyvos needs to take a look at this. Everything else was fine - my friend's chicken/potatoes meal was fine. Service was fine. Lovely decor. NOTE: I've had much better moussaka in the Mirage Diner on Kings Hway and E 9th St in Brooklyn - they give a large portion that almost fills an oval plate - with real lamb slices, succulent tomato-based sauce, visible eggplant layers. Brown top with creamy bechamel cheese. It was much cheaper too. Everyone there was nice so I hope they'll read this and step up their moussaka game. read more

Let's start with the food and drinks, which are great. We started with Melitzanosalata -- a spread made of roasted eggplant, tomato, yogurt, garlic and herbs. We had two cocktails -- the Pink Sand, a gin drink with grapefruit and sparkling rose, and the Mediterranean Gin & Tonic, which was made with mediterranean tonic, lemon, juniper and mint. Both were refreshing! For dinner, I had the Stuffed Red Bell Peppers -- two red peppers stuffed with basmati rice, eggplant, zucchini, tomato, toasted bread crumbs, and manouri cheese. My wife had the classic Moussaka -- which had spiced ground lamb & beef, potato, eggplant, peppers and yogurt béchamel. Both entrees were tasty and cooked perfectly. The interior of the restaurant was like being transported to a Greek city. The music, the lighting, the photos -- the entire interior design was perfectly done. And, from a practical standpoint, the tables were well spaced so we didn't feel shoehorned into our table like some NYC restaurants. The waiters were also top notch -- responsive but not intrusive. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am so over NYC restaurants that require a 2-3 month strategic military operation just to get a reservation. I love good food and great drinks as much as the next person, but sometimes friends show up last-minute and I need somewhere impressive so my city doesn't embarrass me. Enter: Molyvos. I found it on Resy, and honestly my only criteria at the moment was "near Javitts," because that's where my friends were. Expectations were low; vibes were unknown. And then...I walked in. Instantly obsessed. Cute-yet-classy interiors, warm smiles everywhere, seated immediately--already winning. Their Greek wine and cocktail list? Perfectly balanced. Not overwhelming, not "I need a sommelier, a therapist, and a spreadsheet." Just right. Food selection? Also on point. They even asked if we had a show to catch--meaning they can pick up the pace if needed. We didn't; we were there to gossip. They let us linger without even the tiniest hint of a rush. Bless. We started with the three-spread sampler: classic hummus, skordalia, and tirokafteri. Three words: Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. They kept the warm pita and bread flowing--soft inside, crusty outside--truly elite carbs. And that olive oil in the monogrammed bottle? Chef's kiss. We tried the octopus and the halloumi. Halloumi came out flaming (literally), full drama, loved it. The octopus... listen, I've had better. The components just didn't vibe together. It happens. I ordered the lamb chops (medium) and they came with potatoes done so perfectly that I almost shed a tear. Call me a snob, but I judge a restaurant by how they handle basics like eggs and potatoes. If you can't do those right... questionable. But these? Highly recommend. Dessert time. We lost control and ordered the baklava, the sundae, the ravani, and the chocolate cake. The chocolate cake? Pure sinful joy. The ravani had me Googling flights to Greece. The sundae was fine--just a bit too sweet for me--so probably a "been there, done that." Everything else? Top notch. Drinks: I had the Kolonaki--wish it were a touch less sweet, but still very good (I'm just picky). Then switched to the driest Greek red they had. Don't ask me which; I put my faith in our lovely server and she delivered. Will I go back? Absolutely, 100%, without hesitation. I had high hopes for this place based on the yelp reviews. Unfortunately i was very disappointed. On the plus side the place is very lovely and tables are spread nicely apart. We had a great table by the window. Service was perfectly for though i had to flag someone down for more water twice. The real problem here is that the food we had was extremely overpriced and just plain boring. I had the lemon chicken, hubby had the cod and we shared a basic greek salad. The salad was enough for two but way overpriced at $22. The chicken, also very overpriced for a pretty small piece and just boring as hell. Hubby's cod was a tiny serving. We ordered the same tea, but each got our own pot. The entree salad is so large, we went with the appetizer size and added grilled shrimp. The gyro sliders are served open faced and with fries. This was more than enough for the 2 of us. We still ordered the yogurt dessert- delicious strawberry and pistachio. [The only thing missing is Dubai chocolate:)) There is a patio, but we sat inside. I went to Molyvos for a business dinner and had a great meal. The restaurant is a bit smaller than it previously used to be, but has a pleasant ambiance that isn't too loud. For appetizers, we had three spreads and the saganaki. Having had Greek foods before, the dips were among the best part as great representations of them and with several unique ones I had not tried previously. The Taramasalata was one of my favorites and definitely had the flavor of a fish roe that was unique. The saganaki also had an added flair of lemon butter sauce being added on top. It pushes the flair of traditional saganaki up just a touch. For my entree, I had the scallops that were nicely grilled, though in hindsight, I'm glad I had filled up on the appetizer as the portion was quite small - which I should have expected. While it came with 7 scallops, they were on the smaller side of sea scallops, but still a nice presentation and dish overall. We finished off with the warm almond cake that was fine - not overly sweet with a touch of citrus that is refreshing, but a modest dessert overall. On the whole, I had a great experience at Molyvos with attentive, but not intrusive service. The menu is approachable with some unique offerings and I would definitely come back to try a full fish presentation. read more

The sauce the meatballs came in was divine and the spanakopita was the perfect texture. The grape leaves were delicious as was the spread sampler though being a bit picky, the hummus was a little heavy on the garlic. Our waiter was very attentive and the food came out at a good pace. For appetizers - we got the hamachi crudo; it was delicious, but four pieces of fish for $23 is almost as expensive as an omakase. For entrees- we got grilled whole fish, and the waiter recommended lavraki (European sea bass). The dish was disappointing. The flavor was bland, and that's after squeezing tons of lemon juice on it. This is a lovely restaurant serving Greek cuisine. The interior is a breath of fresh air, elegant, and spacious. There was mostly white with beige brick, cool lights, wine on display, artistic plates on the wall, as well as wood tables. I had a hard time deciding between Grilled Baby Lamb Chops ($48) or Grilled Wild Striped Bass ($39). I finally ordered the Lamb Chops, but felt I should've gone with the fish. There were only 3 lamb chops nestled on some lemon garlic roasted fingerling potatoes. They at least looked quite impressive, perfectly charred, with green garlic sauce on top. The lamb chops were wonderfully juicy and well seasoned, however there wasn't that much meat. Also, only 3 lamb chops was nowhere near enough considering the price was almost $50. The potatoes were delightfully tender with bold flavor. My friend and I shared the Baklava Sundae ($14) for dessert. This came in a crunchy outer shell with honey and nuts, plenty of baklava ice cream, and spun sesame sugary topping. It was absolutely delicious! The ice cream was velvety smooth, oh so creamy, with bits of irresistible baklava, and paired beautifully with the crispy shell. Service was great. Our waitress made sure we were taken care of throughout our meal. We chose Molyvos Restaurant for a late lunch and got seated right away with no reservation. The interior was pretty spacious, with a massive wine display, and fun plates as wall decor. Their wines by the glass were all Greek, and the Cabernet Sauvignon I chose was fantastic. My friend got the Pink Sand cocktail, which she really liked. For food, we started with the 3 Spreads Sampler. You get to choose which spreads to include, and we went with the Melitzanosalata, Tzatziki, and Tirokafteri. All three were delicious, but the Tirokafteri was probably my favorite - spicy feta roasted pepper dip with so much flavor. The sampler also came with plenty of pita bread and we even had some left over. I ordered the Grilled Octopus for myself and also the Mitilini Meatballs to share with my friend. The Grilled Octopus was so delicious - great texture and flavor. However, the Mitilini Meatballs were a little bit underwhelming. Both of these were appetizers, and portion sizes were very small for the price. The beau and I were tasked with finding a Greek restaurant to impress his parents who were visiting. A reliable source pointed us to Molyvos. The restaurant itself is upscale yet comfortable with an attractive wine wall. There is a lovely covered patio for outside dining. The four of us were seated and ordered fun summer cocktails that were delicious and not obnoxiously priced. The service was impeccable with setting changes between each course. The food was outstanding, tasting fresh and bursting with complex and authentic flavors. We started with a trio of dips, meatballs, spanakopita, and a Greek salad. Onto the entrees of which Doc Martin enjoyed his lamb shank while the rest of us were delighted with the Branzino and cannelloni. Fully sated, we split the almond cake which was delicious. I came here for restaurant week lunch dining with my friend on a weekday, and the waitress we had was phenomenal. For the prix-fixe $30 lunch order, I requested the zucchini fritters as apps and then eggplant orecchiette. The zucchini fritters seemed more soggy than fried, so the texture wasn't up to par. However, the eggplant entree was delish and I loved the texture of the orecchiette. It was cooked perfectly- slightly softer than al dente so it had a bouncy texture to it.
