This is from their Instagram video they took.

I came into Portray initially just wanting a haircut, but then I mentioned that I was looking to bleach it to finish out my look. Carlee said she could do it for me and I thought, great! She's an apprentice but was supervised the whole time and the haircut came out fine, very cute and just what I asked for. I should have known something was off when she applied the bleach to my roots first. She let that sit for a while and then did my ends, which resulted in my ends not lifting as much as they could have since it didn't sit for as long. After rinsing it out, it was time to tone. The first round of toner was on for about ten minutes, but because it wasn't lifted to platinum, the toner didn't take everywhere. So what did they do? They toned my hair again, without telling me what they were doing or why. Someone else took over at this point because Carlee was busy with another client, which is understandable seeing as I was there for longer than I originally anticipated. But the other stylist came over and just dumped a bunch of toner on my head and rubbed it in like it was shampoo. Then they let THAT sit for at least 20 minutes. So my now very porous hair has been toned twice for a total time of at least 30 minutes. Surprise surprise, it turned a steel blue. This would have been great if I had wanted steel blue. I wanted PALE BLONDE, as close to white as possible without damaging my hair. Seeing as my hair was a level 6-7 when I came in, this should have been totally attainable, and yet... I'm sure my annoyance showed on my face afterwards because Carlee began blow drying it and then stopped. They ended up doing a bleach bath on me with shampoo and low-level developer, which did take a lot of it out. Now I have weird swampy gray hair which clearly still has darker yellow underneath. In the moment, I was so shocked that I just told them it was fine and I wanted to leave. But looking back on my experience as a whole I should have thrown a fit, hence I'm posting this now. The thing I'm probably most upset about is that multiple people tried to convince me it was BLONDE. I think they were trying to reassure themselves more than me because they knew they messed up. As you can see from the pictures, it is not even close to anything anyone would consider blonde. I think of it as a warm muddy gray. Again, I would be fine with it--if that's what I had wanted. To be clear, I don't blame Carlee for this, but there was a severe a lack of communication throughout the process. Why was I not consulted about the second round of toner? Why was it left in my hair for SO LONG? Why didn't they just try to lift my ends again to take the yellow out? Was it because I had class later in the day and they were rushing to get me out? I would rather have left with pale yellow, even, untoned hair than a base which I now cannot immediately use for creative colors like I wanted to. I doubt I will be returning here, and I'm really disappointed because of all the positive reviews. I feel like my hair became a learning experience for someone instead of a treat to myself, which is what it was supposed to be.

Uneven cut and there are random strands in the back that are longer than others

I was intrigued by their pricing -- $10 haircuts?! The salon has excellent reviews, so I figured I'd take the chance. I was tired of paying $70+ for a haircut, sometimes even for just a trim! Unfortunately, I've learned my lesson and will gladly pay someone with experience to cut my hair for $70, lol. I asked for a shoulder-length cut, but somehow we ended up just below the chin. And when I got home, I saw one side was shorter than the other. There are random strands in my hair that are longer than others. I honestly could have gotten a better cut from my mom Luckily, it's just hair and will grow back, but it will be an annoying next few months to grow it out. 2 stars because the salon is cute, and maybe the more experienced staff would have delivered better results? I'm just not taking that chance again

In the past, my verbal descriptions and magazine pictures of the haircut I wanted just didn't seem to help. To be fair, some cuts came close, but in most cases, once I washed my hair, I couldn't make it look like the original cut. However, after I get a cut at Salon 212, my haircut falls into place day after day until the next cut. In addition, I get many compliments wherever I go! And, as if all that weren't enough, despite this salon being upscale, the professional and non-professional staff are all extremely down to earth and nice. I can't think of one thing that would improve my experience there. I've never seen anyone walk out of Salon 212 with anything less than spectacular looking hair!

And then when i came back i leaned on my couch and noticed black stains on my cushion!! I touched the back of scalp and color from the scalp came on my finger so basically the shampoo after color wasn't done properly and there was still a lot of color left. I was so displeased. I went back. It was raining and really cold that day I still went back, the salon was closed. I wrote them an email next day and they just responded with a sorry on the email and saying they will talk to the girl who shampooed but I think even if they were a teaching salon the main stylist should have checked if the service was done properly, it felt like negligence and rushed service. I was not feeling well that day, and after that I had to wash my hair again at 9 PM on a very cold day, only because they didn't do it properly, i had an early morning flight next day and this totally ruined my mood. I expected them to offer me some refund atleast as service was so dismal.. when I had left 40% tip as well. Nothing like that not even a call from them for apologizing properly when i was an old customer.. This experience left such a bad taste in mouth, the color also stained my nails before my hawaii trip. I'm not going back

And let me tell you, Pure Energy has really set the bar high. I never understood how getting services done at a salon could be self care, as opposed to just maintenance, but now I know. First of all, the salon is gorgeous. This location is new (the salon relocated about a year ago), and everything looks clean, fresh, and modern. The whole vibe of the place - from the black pleather chairs, floor length mirrors, to the sink area, and even the Aveda merchandise - all exude luxury. If you want to feel like you're getting the spa experience while getting hair services, this salon is definitely for you. The stylists and employees are also wonderful. You can tell that they truly care for their customers. While I was there, I could tell that some clients had established relationships with the stylists just by how they were chit-chatting - and for those that didn't have such a relationship, those clients were still treated with respect and warmth. (I was there for a color service, so I was sitting quite awhile, and able to observe the genuine interactions!) I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Jen. She truly believes in her business, and her passion can be seen even as she is walking around her salon. Mario and Amanda took great care of me while I was there. It's going to be tough to go back to bargain salons after experience the true wonders of a luxury salon such as Pure Energy. If you want to treat yourself, don't hesitate to come here. And, on top of it all, I am absolutely in love with my hair!

When asked if it was going to be full or partial color, I told her I wasn't sure what he wanted and hoped that speaking with the stylist we would figure it out then. The girl suggested I call my son and ask him and then call back to make my appointment. I asked what the reason was for needing to know prior to making an appointment ? I was told that they focus on time management and they wouldn't want to schedule as a full when he would get partial bc that leftover time could've been filled and vise versa if i scheduled a partial but decided on a full. She doubled down on me figuring it out with my son and then calling back so the appointment would align with their "time management". I brought up the possibility of my 15 yr old son changing his mind mid appointment after discussions with his stylist etc. wouldn't customer satisfaction be the focus in this situation ? What happens then? Does "time management" trump our appointment ? Do you send us away when the chance of interfering with next customers scheduled time comes into play ? I was offered a consultation appointment that would , unfortunately , yes, mean I'd have to come back another day for the actual service. I'm 35 years old I've dyed my hair 6 times 4 perms and countless cuts over the years at probably over a dozen salons. I've never experienced such difficulty just trying to make an appointment; Seemed like a red flag to me. Shame though because their photos of their color services was impressive. Story has a happy ending though : I was able to make an appointment at another salon in Ridgewood after hanging up. I said the same thing I did when I called here , there was no problem at all. My advice : when a salon is so focused on time management to the point you can't even make an appointment: go elsewhere. I'm thankful actually. Some people don't realize they made the wrong choice until it's too late
