I've been going to GumDrop for years, almost exclusively seeing Addie. She's amazing and I should have waited to book with her, but instead took the next available appointment that worked with my schedule. BIG mistake. Not only did I have to wait 20/30 minutes to be seen by the new stylist, they cut my hair almost 5 inches shorter than what we discussed. I couldn't believe it and the lack of acknowledgment or understanding was even worse. They told me, while my hair was wet and after I commented on the short length, that my hair, once dry, will be longer. I think/hope we all know that is not the case. I understand hair grows back, but the blatant disregard of what we discussed is incredibly frustrating. I will never, ever book with that stylist again. I hope GumDrop sees this. read more

Also they offered me a refund of 110$ which was the charge of color refresher treatment, as that treatment was done without my knowledge and had no visible impact. * it's been two years since my original review, I can't help but update my latest experience to reflect. Today I spent the day at gumdrop for a full blown hair miracle mommy makeover. Casie has matured into a powerhouse stylist at gumdrop over the last two years. Her confidence radiated as she performed a freaking color miracle on my hair (yet again). She has a youthful energy and outlook that is contagious. Her focus while applying my color was intense, in the best way possible. It made me feel like I was the only person in the salon. During my appointment I got to know an assistant named Kat. She was eager to learn, and constantly checked in on me. I spent a good chunk of time at gumdrop today really observing this well oiled machine. All the stylists were highly skilled & super creative. None of the robot dressed in black crap you see at most North jersey salons. I really appreciated the lack of salon gossip. Everyone seemed happy to mingle with their clients & each other. Not only is she super nice and accommodating, but she's got a lot of skill in cutting, styling, and dying that make you come out looking your best everytime you leave her chair! I had come here due to great reviews and upon checking social media it seemed like they did great hair transformations and the haircuts themselves looked amazing. I was excited to have something different done to my hair. I don't live nearby at all. In the mirror I did a quick glance at my hair, he had curled it and brushed it out, so it looked nice styled, definitely not as drastic as a cut as I was expecting. I had asked for layers and a face frame and showed a picture beforehand but it came out looking like just a trim and the two face frame pieces are very long. By time I left the curls/waves fell flat and my hair frizzed up (it was not a great weather day) so then I noticed when I got home that my hair was completely uneven. One side was a full two inches longer than the other. For Tier 3 pricing, which is their most expensive, that shouldn't have happened. I didn't call because I didn't want to have to drive back the 40+ minutes to have it fixed because I was too frustrated at that point. My family noticed right away. I even took a picture to send my friend and she was shocked. I was also given a treatment for $45 and upon being home for a couple of days and washing my hair again, I noticed it didn't do anything to my hair. Maybe it wasn't left in long enough? Not that this is a big deal but I was told the treatment was $40 not $45, and then I purchased some products since I was out of shampoo/conditioner/cream at home anyway, and at the counter I was told each product was $5 less than they actually were. There was also a $7 sanitation fee that wasn't mentioned until checkout. That all added up to an extra $27 I wasn't expecting. I feel they should know prices of their treatments and products or have told me when ringing up- by the way this is actually *this much*. When the stylist was cutting my hair, his phone would ring loudly with notifications and he would pause each time to go over and check the phone and then constantly check his watch notifications. I've never had anyone do that before. I get it, I don't know what's going on in someone's life and something important could be happening of course and I'd never want to judge that, but my only point was it seemed he wasn't paying full attention while cutting my hair. Unfortunately that was my last time at the salon, only because I've received better quality haircuts elsewhere for much less of a cost. I feel like I paid a ton of money for just an (uneven) hair trim. read more

I was always scared to go to a new salon because of bad experiences in the past but I got super lucky going here. I wanted to work with Sabrina because of her beautiful work on her instagram and I found it to be a funny coincidence that we share the same name. I showed her pictures of the color I wanted for my hair and knew it wasn't going to be the exact same as the pictures since I have really thick wavy hair. But she was able to give me the exact color I wanted and it looked incredible!! I have been a long-time client of Nicole's, and I cannot say enough positive things about her. Nicole is a hair artist, she is always in tune with what I want, and pays full attention to detail. I use to love coming to this salon. My whole life I struggled with trying to find stylists who are able to cut, highlight and style my hair in order to boost my confidence! When I found this place 7 or so years ago, I was so happy! The staff were so friendly and listened to my concerns and made my hair look great. Honestly I don't know what happened the past two or three years. I really didn't want to write this review but the past two experiences I've had here have not been pleasant. My hair is fried from the highlighting I received after my latest appointment a few weeks ago. I have naturally ashy dark blonde hair that is thin dry and curly in texture. I do expect when I get my hair highlighted that it will become more dry and change the curl pattern a bit but this time my hair is hardly even manageable. I try very hard not to use heat products on my hair. Once every couple months. Now I feel the only solution to combat how unmanageable my hair has become is to wear my hair up in a bun to hide it. It's really upsetting. As for the cut itself, one side is cut shorter than the other. When I try to dry my hair naturally it looks like I was electrocuted. I loved my long curly hair prior to this. I took pride in it. Now it's shorter and unmanageable and I look at it in disgust. The worst part is I paid alot of money. 500+ dollars on the cut and highlight. I wish I could have received some honestly if my hair was not in a good condition to highlight. I don't highlight my hair very often (one a year ) but now my hair is ruined. Other minor things I've noticed is that everything seems more rushed and they have their stylists working like they are in a factory. It's kinda upsetting to see. A lot of stylists are working back and forth with two clients at once meanwhile you hear other stylists laughing and giggling in the back. I noticed a trend on their instagram that all the hair cuts and styles and highlight techniques all kinda look the same. Everyone seems to be getting the same cut and highlight. Idk if that's just a coincidence though. Lastly beware of the newer women assistant who is washing hair. She has the roughest approach on clients scalps. This women had me almost in tears. She is rough scrubbing the scalp with the acrylic long nails and yanks on the hair and neck as if you aren't a human. She does not take into account there is a human sitting in the chair and is washing hair and pulling on necks and scalps like she is working on a mannequin. I really want to continue to go here but I'm wary now. Give three starts because the staff is over all friendly but I just don't think the quality is worth the price anymore and prices keep going up and up. read more

Went here a few days ago for a haircut which i was able to book an hour in advance. I'm not from the area so I was very hesitant making the move to a foreign salon, My appointment was with Joe who cut my hair and I really had a pleasant experience. I did have to wait a little bit in the beginning but his time and expertise made up for it. He listened to what I wanted and made great suggestions. While I was looking around I noticed the amazing color jobs on the clients around me as well. It's really hard to find a hair salon that does both great cuts and great color but let me tell you this place has it. My hair is lighter feels healthier and is so manageable. This is the best haircut I have had in a very long time. I used to get my hair cut at a salon in NOLITA and then a salon in the Lower East Side and Joe at Gumdrop is even better without ever seeing my entire face. I was at ease, they adhere to guidelines and I hope Gumdrop can stay open in this next wave. The service is excellent. The people who work there are welcoming and kind and accommodate special needs in a very nice way. You can tip in cash or via payment app if that's more convenient. The music is great and so is the atmosphere. I also got my little one's hair cut by Andros. It was worth paying a little more than what you'd pay at a kids' salon and does not need to be cut as often--so more cost effective in the long-run for us. Parking is not bad, especially if you use the app. It's such a lovely part of town to walk around rain or shine and support local business. I picked up a pair of shoes nearby and some gelato (not at the same store)! What a treat! read more

I'm sad that I even have to give this salon 1 star. My hair was completely burnt off. I last got my hair done at this salon around January, and have since lost a lot of hair. The hairdresser reassured me that she was using Olaplaex to keep the integrity of my hair, but lied, and charged me for it. I know that she lied because my hair would not STILL be falling out in chunks. The hairdresser used Uberliss, which if you talk to any other professional in the business, they will tell you that the concentration of chemicals in the contents weaken the hair and fry it. I am so upset that my once long and thick hair is falling out. I have to cut it all off so that it strengthens and stop weakening mid-shaft and breaking off every time I wash it. After sending pictures of my hair and scalp, and requests to Better Business Bureau, they will be doing a full investigation on this salon and the tactics they use on hair. read more

Ugh where do I even begin?! I have asthma and am sensitive to chemicals. I got my haircut at Gumdrop a few months ago, and the hairdresser doused my hair in hairspray without asking me first if I wanted hairspray. I went home and felt like I couldn't breathe. This most recent visit, I kindly requested that the stylist use the all-natural shampoo+conditioner I'd brought with me, since it doesn't trigger my asthma, and he refused to use them because he said they were no good. Then, after he'd cut my hair, I requested that he not use styling cream or hairspray since both had a strong perfume and would trigger my asthma. He seemed to get really annoyed with my request but did find some unscented products for me. However, I had to ask several times, which isn't my style and I felt very uncomfortable. Then, as soon as the stylist finished, he stormed off without even saying goodbye to me and didn't offer to schedule a bang trim in a month (which they always offer here) and didn't walk me to the front door (which has never happened with any stylist before). I felt really disrespected and creeped out by his behavior. The whole encounter felt sexist to me: he couldn't handle that a woman had politely set boundaries about what products she wanted on her head. I called Gumdrop to complain and the person with whom I spoke promised he'd talk to the hairstylist and call me back within a few days, and he never called me back. I've never felt so disrespected by a hair stylist in my life. I am a really polite customer who tips well, and I didn't deserve to be treated this way. People with disabilities or chronic illnesses should be able to request the accommodations we need and women should feel free to set boundaries with men about what we went on our heads (i.e., a part of our bodies). Also, my bangs were crooked and I had to fix them when I got home. I told the manager my haircut was fine, but that's just because I didn't want to get into too many complaints since the most pressing issue was how I'd been treated, not the haircut itself, which definitely wasn't worth the very expensive price! I went to the salon to have my hair colored by Nicole as a returning client. My appointment was at 2:30pm, and at 3:10pm, 40 minutes after my appointment, I went to the receptionist to ask what the delay was and saw Nicole was nowhere near complete with the client she was still helping. The receptionist offered to reschedule my appointment, to which I said yes, and left. As I left, I felt totally disrespected as Nicole never addressed me and she saw me rescheduling my appointment. The lack of care for a client's time was upsetting to me. I called the salon when I left to share my experience, explaining to the manager I spoke with that I'm a mom with very little free time, I work full time, I have an event this weekend that I wanted my hair done for, and to have an appointment start 40+ minutes late without so much as addressing me about it is not acceptable -- especially because salons like Gumdrop hold customers accountable for being late, no-shows, etc. -- charging a customer full price should they miss or be 40 minutes late to their appointment. The manager I spoke with was very apologetic and validating. This all took a turn when the owner called me. He compared the experience to a doctor's office, saying that I wouldn't act this way at a doctor's office, that a stylist being 40 minutes late is totally "normal and happens," and that he doesn't WANT to give me anything in return to compensate me for my time but that he would offer a discount if I wanted it. The fact that he even called me with the tone that he did, and said he wouldn't comp me an appointment -- and said this all very begrudgingly -- was DISTURBING. The owner, I believe named VJ, was gaslighting me, saying that he watched the camera and she finished right as I left, and that these are scenarios that all customers should be okay with. I have never been treated like this before and this is a business that you should stay FAR away from. The owner then called me back 5 minutes later to apologize for his behavior, sharing that he didn't have the full side of the story and offering me 50% off? The entitlement, the bizarre behavior, the lack of validation, the avoiding of giving an apology, the gaslighting, all of it was extremely strange. 0/10 would not recommend. Would rather drive back to Jersey City salons where I was treated with respect, empathy and validation. Wow. read more
