Do not go to Gabrielle, she is a nightmare! She turned my hair a very brassy, orange color and is the most unprofessional, immature, worst stylist I have ever encountered. My experience with Gabrielle was awful from start to finish. I went to her for the first time for a blonde balayage. We spent time at the beginning discussing what I wanted. Here are all the problems I had with Gabrielle: 1. SHE GAVE ME BRASSY, ORANGE HAIR: After my hair was dry, I saw that it had very uneven streaks of brassy, orange and it had an orange, reddish color all over.  2. SHE WAS RUDE AND DEFENSIVE: I told her I wasn't happy with the color while I was still in the chair and she became defensive and then aggressive. She was gaslighting me telling me, "I gave you exactly what you asked for." No blonde ever asks for orange hair. It was so uncomfortable and I just wanted to leave because I was so upset. I asked if she could fix it and she told me to wash it a few times and let her know via instagram how my hair was looking. A few washes later and it was looking even worse. It was still a bright, brassy orange, but the color was getting even more uneven and splotchy. We went back and forth on instagram message. 3. SHE ASKED IF I WOULD PAY TO GO BACK TO HER FOR A FIX:  She turned my hair orange and then asked if I would pay to fix it. I was disgusted. I then asked to speak to the salon owner. The salon owner said the salon policy was to have the client come back in for a free fix. He offered to have me come back and see his wife and co-owner of the salon for a fix, which I appreciated. However, at this point I was done Hair 491, because my experience with Gabrielle had been so bad. I wanted to go to one of my former stylists who I trusted to fix my hair. (Which I have since done and my former stylist gave me exactly what I wanted and my hair is beautiful again.) 4. SHE BLOCKED ME ON INSTAGRAM AND VENMO: My experience with Gabrielle had been so awful and it was going to cost me a lot to get my hair fixed, so I thought giving me the tip back was the least she could do. I sent her a message via instagram and a refund request on venmo. She blocked me on both sites. My messages were professional and direct, nothing offensive that warranted blocking a client. For a hairstylist to block a client shows how immature and unprofessional they are. My experience with Gabrielle was simply the worst. Save yourself from a nightmare and DO NOT GO TO HER! read more

I have been looking endlessly for a local salon that I can trust with my hair and finally found one. I had post pregnancy hair which was basically wild, thick, overgrown hair so I desperately needed a cut. I was paired with Kim L who listened closely to what kind of cut I was looking for. I also showed her a picture of what I wanted and she knew exactly what to do. She's very friendly and easy to talk to. The individual who washed my hair was great too. He gave a nice scalp massage as well. The chair was very comfortable and supported my neck. The cut was $60 which was within the range I was expecting. The salon is modern and clean. I have been going to hair491 for the last 2 years and wont go anywhere else! Nick is the BEST! Truly a master at his craft. I have ALOT OF GREY and have to get root color touch ups consistently every 4 - 6 weeks and Nick gets the color exactly right every single time. Sometimes I do highlights as well and he always gives me a flawless, natural look. When it was time to donate my long hair I was very nervous but knew that I was in good hands. Nick gave me a cute, fresh cut that I LOVE (a long, angled bob) and get so many compliments on. I don't think i'll change my style for quite a while. I'm not one to usually write reviews, but without a doubt I could not let this experience go unrecognized. Since the age of 5 I have gone to the same hair stylist, so it was natural for me to book her for my highlights the week of my wedding. Unfortunately she had to have surgery and I had to book with another stylist who I have been to multiple times. Obviously I had no concerns. This simple highlight turned into a nightmare! The foils bled, the toner I feel made things worse, she base broke my hair and my hair looked like I dyed it yellow. I was in absolute tears and feared my hair was stuck like this for my wedding. I called Hair 491 the next day and they got me in right away with Natalie, who was AMAZING!!! She calmed me down from my tears/ bridezilla-mode and reassured me she could help fix my hair disaster. Natalie was so knowledgeable about what had to be done to help take the brassiness out and help make my hair look natural. Obviously 2 days before my wedding I was still skeptical, but once I was done and Natalie blew dry my hair, I knew I had found a new stylist and salon. I felt like and looked like myself again, which is what ever bride wants for her wedding day. I am so thankful for Hair 491 for listening to my concerns and fitting me in the same day. I went here on the recommendation of a fellow Yelper and boy am I glad I did! After almost 2 years of searching for a stylist who is affordable, personable and knows what they're doing- my search is over!! I had my hair done by Alicia, the owner, and she did an excellent job! She took the time to get to know me and what my likes and gripes are about my hair. She gave me some suggestions and took time to think out what we can do with my hair on future visits. I really like that the stylists here are not pretentious. You don't get the impression that any of them are going to talk sh*t about you or any other clients the second they leave the salon or in the back corner while you're still there (which I have personally experienced at other salons). On the contrary, while I was there a client called trying to reschedule her appointment for a time which didn't seem feasible for most of the girls there. Instead of putting the client on hold and rolling their eyes at this last minute request, they all worked together to move things around so they could fit this client in when she needed to be seen. Perhaps one of my favorite things about this place is that there are no stylist levels, which means no one charges more than anyone else- a refreshing change of pace! I'm confident that under Alicia's direction everyone there is equally capable of doing a good job. Most importantly, I left feeling great about my haircut and color because Alicia actually LISTENED to what I said I liked/wanted. Looking forward to many future returns!! A word to the wise: if you park in the lot behind the salon, bring plenty of change for the 2 hr limit metered parking. The salon itself is really adorable and cool on the inside - lots of bright colors and paintings, cool old dressers used as vanity mirrors, awesome music playing in the background - I really couldn't get over how neat it was for such a little salon. It really gave gives you a comfy and fun vibe when you walk in the door. I had my hair cut my Natalie, who was super nice and personable! It is hard for me to even figure out what I want to do with my hair - I'm just not the type of girl that can look in the mirror and know exactly what I want. Natalie sat me down and really talked to me about what I like, how I normally wear it, what I've tried before - it really made me feel like she wanted to do what was best for my hair type and preferences, which made it so much easier for me! I've gone to other salons before where they just sit you down and do whatever they want without even asking or taking into account what you've told them. I got my hair cut here last week and it was such a better experience than Bangz! It's a small salon that doesn't look like much from the outside, and the decor isn't all that great, but who cares when you have a wonderful stylist?! Yvy cut my hair and before we began, she talked with me for nearly 15 minutes to go over what exactly I wanted, what would look good given my face shape, and she detailed exactly what her process for cutting my hair would be. She did a dry cut first, then I was shampooed and she "customized" the cut while my hair was wet, and gave me a great blowout. It was definitely more money than a junior stylist and Bangz, but well worth it! Everyone I know who's gotten their hair cut at Alicia's is always shocked by how personal and welcoming they are. You can tell they really care about giving the customer what they want, not just getting them in and out of the chair as soon as possible so they can go on to the next client (like they do at Bangz). I'm going back in 3 days to get my hair colored...so I'll update the review to speak about that experience, but I just had to commend Alicia's right away! FYI -- you can charge your services on a credit card, but gratuities must be cash only! Updated: May 28, 2008 So, it's been 2 weeks since my hair cut at Alicia's and I'm still getting compliments! I went back this past Saturday and got my hair colored by the same woman who cut my hair, Yvy. It looks incredible! She totally transformed my hair and made me look so much more like myself. She once again sat with me for like 10 minutes describing what her thoughts were and what her process would be, listened and took into account my opinion, and worked off of it. It looks amazing. I had an appointment with Nick. When I got there I was given to a girl. Not sure why... Next, I wanted my few gray hair strands colored but not with permanent color. I do this often at multiple Salons and have never had a problem. I have very little gray strands and am only 38, so it's minimal coverage. She said she could only blend it and it would still be seen. This is false. I've never had anyone tell me they can't cover my gray with a non permanent color. I left and went down the street to Moxie where it was done just fine and cheaper. Staff was super friendly, called the day before to confirm the appt., greeted me as soon as I walked into the door. The hair washing chairs were the most comfortable I've ever sat in. It's the little things... Nick did a great job. He identified a cowlick I had (who knew?!), which has been the bane of my bangs' existence, and gave me a great cut. I received a card in the mail for a deep conditioning and blowout after filling out a client card for Hair at Alicia's and decided to use it before my husband and I went out for dinner to celebrate being married for six months (any excuse to celebrate!). Firstly, the shorter girl with the sock bun gave me the best scalp massage I've had in over a year. This is a big deal for me. After rinsing and conditioning my hair, she applied the deep conditioner and stuck me under the steamer for 20 minutes. The service was great - both girls made sure I had whatever drink I wanted and several magazines to choose from. I don't recall if the woman who styled my hair ever told me her name, but she did a really nice job. She also mentioned that my ends looked like they had been "on vacation" (which they were), but I didn't really know what that meant and would have liked if she told me what the solution was (toner? more conditioner? a trim?). Anyway, the services and employees were nice enough, but the design looks a little cheap/outdated - especially the "bar" where they have you sit and wait (while your color develops, etc.). I know this should have a huge baring on a rating - and it didn't - but I like to feel like I'm being pampered when I go to a salon, and that includes feeling pampered in my surroundings. read more

I am one of those people who dreads going to a new salon. Nothing is worse than trying somewhere new and hating what they do with your hair. A good haircut can make you feel like a celebrity and a bad one can make you feel like your life is over. I have moved almost an hour away from my former stylist and was hesitant to try a new place. After months of research I decided to try Alicia's. What a great decision! I was treated with nothing but kindness from the entire staff. Kim did a wonderful job on my cut and was very concerned the whole time about what I wanted. She even took into consideration how I styled my hair at home. Came to Hair At Alicia's for an ombre. Scheduling an appointment was easy and the person on the other end of the phone was pleasant and patient as I asked a ton of questions. I arrived and met Kim who is a color stylist. Because my hair is dark and I was getting an ombre, I was scared and concerned about how my hair would turn out. I showed a several photos of what I wanted and Kim let me know what to expect. After a few minutes, we came to an agreement and began the stripping and bleaching my hair. After a few hours my hair successfully became lighter and I left content with my hair new color. After a few days, however, I began to notice less of an ombre so I called and booked another appointment. Because I expressed some concern and it was only a few days after my original appointment (I also dropped a pretty penny), the owner and Kim were extremely courteous and listened to what I wanted. They advised me that they would color correction my hair and give me more of a transition of hair color that I wanted, free of charge but that they wouldn't guarantee my color should I fail to care for blonde/bleached hair accordingly. I, of course, acknowledged and spent a few more hours with Kim on correcting my hair. This time around I left 110% satisfied. After leaving the salon, most people noticed my ombre and complimented me more so than the first time around. The owner and staff at Alicia's throughout my color experience were nice and understanding. Had the best hair experience of my life yesterday with Nick at Hair 491! I used to live near Montclair 2 yrs ago and first discovered this salon when Alicia was still in the previous location. I just needed a bang trim then so I enjoyed the visit. Once they moved to the new location I had started going there for occasional haircuts and had a fabulous balayage 2 yrs ago too. I recently moved away and haven't been able to find a good salon in south jersey. I had a terrible experience few weeks ago too with a cut and style in a salon in Princeton. I decided I would make the 1hr 20 min trip and called Alicia & said I was looking to make a big change to my hair with cut & color before I go on vacation to italy & desperately needed to see someone she trusts & that could give me results! I have been here twice and was cut and styled by Ivy both times. She is so nice and welcoming that I did not hesitate to tell her what I wanted. The first time I only got a trim and a blow-out.
