Truthfully, it has been YEARS since I've stepped foot into a salon - definitely pre-covid! In addition, I'm used to the bargain salons that offer a quick cut at an equally quick price...so stepping into Pure Energy was a real treat. And let me tell you, Pure Energy has really set the bar high. I never understood how getting services done at a salon could be self care, as opposed to just maintenance, but now I know. First of all, the salon is gorgeous. This location is new (the salon relocated about a year ago), and everything looks clean, fresh, and modern. The whole vibe of the place - from the black pleather chairs, floor length mirrors, to the sink area, and even the Aveda merchandise - all exude luxury. If you want to feel like you're getting the spa experience while getting hair services, this salon is definitely for you. The stylists and employees are also wonderful. You can tell that they truly care for their customers. While I was there, I could tell that some clients had established relationships with the stylists just by how they were chit-chatting - and for those that didn't have such a relationship, those clients were still treated with respect and warmth. (I was there for a color service, so I was sitting quite awhile, and able to observe the genuine interactions!) I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Jen. She truly believes in her business, and her passion can be seen even as she is walking around her salon. Mario and Amanda took great care of me while I was there. It's going to be tough to go back to bargain salons after experience the true wonders of a luxury salon such as Pure Energy. If you want to treat yourself, don't hesitate to come here. As a Black woman I have bought a few products for most of my life from Aveda, shine, conditioners etc. I would have never thought to ever get my natural hair done there. Well what a pleasant surprise, I don't really trust Caucasian stylist to cut or style my natural hair since they know so little about my hair. My longtime stylist passed away and I really felt lost. Not wanting to head into NYC where I have gone for years now for haircare. What a beautiful salon but I didn't see one ethnic woman with my hair type. The young women at the desk were very nice in showing me Aveda's new coily, curly advanced line, so I saw one mixed stylist Alexas who had curly hair. I asked the ladies at the front desk. "Does anyone do black natural hair?" To my surprise she said Alexas does so what the heck it's only hair I said ok I would like a cut and wash and go. She not only was terrific and did one of the best cuts I have had in a while, she didn't blow it out using heat but cut it in its natural state. It looked amazing along with the Aveda new product line, my hair was banging. I am sold, brought my play niece and my husband for cuts and style. Diversity is key, so is skill to be able to cut all kinds of hair. They know their stuff at this location. This was my first visit to Pure Energy Hair Salon and my first cut since the start of the pandemic. At first I was a little apprehensive but that was short lived. I called up the salon desperate for a haircut at the last minute, and they were able to fit me in with junior haircutter Alexis. (I mean I was about to go in my back yard and just chop it off myself so I figured anybody would be better than that.) I am so so happy with the haircut I got! I really lucked out. I have to commend Alexis for being so attentive, listening carefully and asking questions, giving me a fabulous hair wash, and cutting and styling my hair perfectly. I have very curly hair and not everybody knows how to cut curly. Even when I get a good cut, usually I have to go home and wash my hair again and style it myself after I get a haircut before I start to like it, but this was perfect from the start! I've been going to Pure Energy since they were in Nutley and then on Bloomfield Ave in Montclair, but during the Covid shutdown I got disconnected from the salon experience. I was a loyal client of Pure Energy for over a decade and followed them when they relocated room their original location (5 minutes from my home) to their new Montclair location. I even hung in during the pandemic, waiting for them to reopen. Alicia had been putting product in my hair and eventually started wearing gloves during applications as she said it irritated her skin from applying it all day long. Eventually, during a visit, this product caused a burning sensation on my scalp during an application, and when I alerted her she claimed she'd never heard of that before (even though she was wearing gloves?). The burning incident caused damage to my scalp that required help from a dermatologist. I stopped going to Pure Energy at this point, but spared them bad online reviews based on the years of friendship. They never reached out to see why I stopped coming. Months later I saw on their social media that they were opening a new location, and I sent a simple email to the owner Jen to wish them luck. Only then did she ask where I'd been. When I explained, she was very apologetic. But even after this, no word from Alicia, even after a decade of being a customer. I guess if you're not there giving them business and buying Aveda products from them they have no use for you, as I realized they had both deleted me from their social media. I got my hair done here today. Everything was okay until we got to the cut. I asked for 1-1 1/2 inches off *maximum*. I have very long hair, and my stylist almost pressured me into getting layers. She finally compromised and cut off 2 inches. This was very disappointing. Won't be returning. Update: The owner called me over the phone and apologized profusely. I came to Pure Energy Hair Studio a couple of times to get my hair done. I came here and got my hair done by Janell the first time for prom and she did an amazing job wand curling my extensions. The second time I cam here was to get my hair color corrected after a bad dye job at a neighboring hair salon. I don't remember the woman who colored my hair, I believe her name was Alicia. She did an amazing job coloring my hair while keeping the integrity of my curls. I ended up coming to her again to get my hair dyed back to my natural color because I grew out of the hair color she dyed it to. She dyed my hair back without any problems. I love that this hair salon uses and sells Aveda products. All of the hair stylists and the owner are very sweet, kind, and patient. I went for the first tiime last week to get a hair cut and curled for a wedding I was going to later. My hair it super straight and does not hold a curl well, and I was nervous because the last time I had my hair curled the stylist put so much hairspray in my hair it looked hard and shellacked, however I was pleasantly surprised! My stylist was really nice, did my curls a little tighter and gave me a couple tips on what to do later to keep them intact. Super happy with my experience! read more

I just had a haircut and partial at this salon for the first time. It was a good overall experience although the stylist thought my color was lighter than what we discussed after the shampoo and had to darken it. When I checked out, i noticed I was billed extra for that. The receptionist was not helpful in addressing the issue or helping me understand why I was paying for their error. I have no problem paying for good service but not for extra charges due to incorrect coloring. I'm hoping I just misunderstood what the receptionist was saying but I likely will not be back which is a shame since I do like the final result of the color. read more

I went in for a color correction consultation. Another colorist at a salon in the area gave me pretty bad balayage ombre and I needed the application and color corrected. The previous salon could not fit me in so I tried Pure Energy (since the colorist was working at Pure Energy, I thought she would be able to communicate what needed to be fixed since she couldn't fit me in). After meeting with Alicia, she told me the color needed extensive work and would not reach a good result after 1 visit since the previous color application was so bad. I felt comfortable that she would do her best with the color so I made an appointment for a haircut. Typically, I like to get my color and cut done at the same place so everything flows- they can talk to each other and make sure my hair looks uniform. I got my hair cut with Brian, and it was the most awkward hair appointment I have ever had. Talking to him was like pulling teeth. I couldn't get him to say anything. When going to get your hair done, it's nice to have someone who makes you feel comfortable. That aside, I showed him a few pictures of very flowy long layers. Nothing special, just regular long layers. While blow drying my hair, I think he was a bit distracted and burned my scalp a few times. He laughed and apologized. Once the haircut was done, it was incredibly blunt on the left side (like straight across) and the layers were angular and not flowy at all. I asked him if it was supposed to be so blunt and he said very rudely, "yes, because I cut it that way". I think he realized it was rude as soon as he said it and quickly tried to fix it. He texturized a bit and thinned some of the ends, but when I left, it was still blunt. Before leaving, Brian noted to Alicia the large chunks of color that were missing throughout my hair. I spoke with Alicia again to get a quote for the color correction. She wanted to assure me that it would not look like the pictures I showed her and that it would take a lot of work, probably more than 1 visit. She quoted me roughly $250. The next day, I got a call from the salon that they had to cancel my color appointment because it would take more than 3 hours and they had a good relationship with the previous colorist who botched my hair. Incredibly unprofessional. Especially since they all agreed the color job was horrible when the previous stylist wasn't there. Seemed very high school to me. Regarless, I'm SO HAPPY I didn't get my hair done there because I ended up at another Aveda salon in the area, 212 salon and day spa in Montclair. THEY ARE FANTASTIC. Fixed my color in less than 1.5 hours, so friendly, kind, and fixed my cut for a FRACTION of the price. If you have your heart set on going to an Aveda salon in Montclair, do yourself a favor and pick 212. You will not regret it. read more

I have been a long time client of the Pure Energy Team (over 10 years) and I have never been displeased or disappointed with my color or cut, and I have had MANY different colors and styles over the years. I love to change the color of my hair, add highlights, low lights, etc., and nobody does color better than the stylists at Pure Energy. Of course I have my regular stylist there but when she was sick, I had different stylists perform my color/cut and the quality was just as perfect! Sarah at Pure Energy Fit me in, and I had an appointment within fifteen minutes. This Aveda salon was beautiful, and everyone was friendly and professional. Janelle, my stylist, gave me a fantastic haircut. While their haircuts are expensive, they are worth it. By far, this is the best haircut I have ever received. I was super impressed by her attention to detail, and her determination to have my haircut match my lifestyle. I went to Pure Energy today after spending 18 years at my previous salon. My experience exceeded my expectations from the moment I called the salon to make my appointment. I had complicated hair needs (color treated, curly, overprocessed) and questions and all my concerns were addressed. When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly and professional front desk team. Then I met my stylist, Bryan, he took the time to really listen and analyze my hair. He was amazing! He recommended an approach to reach the blonde color that I desired and he and the team made my experience a pleasure. Their team approach, where an additional great stylist, Allie, also assisted, was terrific. They explained every product to me without any "hard sell". For the price I paid I was very disappointed. Yes they do listen and ask what you want but somehow just can't deliver the goods. My daughter, age 16, came here for color. She wanted highlights. After getting the highlights, the colorist said "oh, this is way too light, should we do a glaze to correct the color?" My daughter said ok, not realizing this would cost an EXTRA $50. She didnt know till she went up to pay. Meanwhile, she would have never needed the color had they not messed up in the first place. Pure Energy provides an amazing experience from start to finish. Not only is the salon itself inviting, sleek and stylish, but the people are as well. Here is what you can expect when you walk in to Pure Energy. First you are greeted with a smile every time from the girls at the desk, they offer to take you jacket and ask if you would like something to drink. Then you are offered a seat where you have full view of the salon and retail area. Shortly thereafter you are escorted off to a chair where they give you a relaxing scalp massage. Next it's time for you shampoo. They set you in these soft roomy chairs that just hug you and the sink adjusts so you have a totally comfortable experience as they wash and condition your hair. Now the real experience begins and your off to the best haircut and color of your life. Bryan is nothing short of a miracle worker. I have extremely thick hair which is getting grey-er and grey-er by the day and its naturally curly but of course I like poker straight hair. So the challenge begins getting my hair colored with out damaging it to much because I am going to then blow dry it and flat iron it constantly. The Aveda product line is simply amazing and helps keep my hair healthy. I know this is going to sound strange but I actually think my hair is healthier now then before I started coloring it. Bryan who in my opinion has been blessed with amazing talent when it comes to hair, begins to cut and then picks a few products that will help protect my hair from all it is about to endure. The results is something I have been unable to achieve anywhere else. My hair which normally has a million fly aways and needs oil and what not to help control it needs nothing more then the products Bryan uses prior to blow drying, not even hair spray. When Bryan is done my hair is silky soft poker straight and stunning. Every time he does it I sit in awe that for so many years my hair was my nemesis. I do a lot of traveling in and out of the country and when I walk into other salons the first thing that is always said by the stylist (who is only allowed to wash, blow dry and flat iron) is who ever cuts your hair does an amazing job your lines are perfectly straight and you hair is super healthy. We then proceed to have a conversation about Bryan and his craftsmanship. It is this way every single time from London to Naples and back again. For any of you that have ever had your hair done in a posh salon in NYC you know they do not give complements easily yet it Bryan gets them ever single time. I currently travel 45 min to an hour weekly to have Bryan do my hair I have a standing Friday appointment so I go into every weekend looking amazing. It is worth the drive and time out of my schedule as he never disappoints. I hate when I have to travel and get my hair even blown out by another as no one can ever achieve the same results. I have many friends now who travel even further then I do to go to him because of his ability to make your hair look like a million dollars. I can tell you this if you are unhappy with your hair then take the time no matter how far it is to try Pure Energy. All of the talented staff there does stunning work. They are all Aveda trained and keep up with all the latest techniques. I just had an appointment with Jen, the owner, for cut and color. I'm a red-head, middle-aged, and the red is fading. I also like butter streaks on top of the red. I had a free color consultation with Jen before I made the appointment so I knew was putting myself and my hair in competent hands. I had no idea though that i would love the results as much as I do. Jen not only heard what i had to say, she brought her own expertise to the session, and the results are spectacular. She wove at least four different colors together giving my hair an incredible depth and richness. Then after she blew it out, she cut it dry. It's about the best cut and color I've ever had and I've already booked my next appointment for five weeks from today.
