It used to be good.. but lately it's a hit or miss. I went for a root touchup and since it was last appointment i was hurried up, they didn't even want to dry my hair fully. And then when i came back i leaned on my couch and noticed black stains on my cushion!! I touched the back of scalp and color from the scalp came on my finger so basically the shampoo after color wasn't done properly and there was still a lot of color left. I was so displeased. I went back. It was raining and really cold that day I still went back, the salon was closed. I wrote them an email next day and they just responded with a sorry on the email and saying they will talk to the girl who shampooed but I think even if they were a teaching salon the main stylist should have checked if the service was done properly, it felt like negligence and rushed service. I was not feeling well that day, and after that I had to wash my hair again at 9 PM on a very cold day, only because they didn't do it properly, i had an early morning flight next day and this totally ruined my mood. I expected them to offer me some refund atleast as service was so dismal.. when I had left 40% tip as well. Nothing like that not even a call from them for apologizing properly when i was an old customer.. I can't say much about how they do as a salon cause they might be absolutely amazing. However, I can say that I called them to schedule an appointment and they promised to give me a call back after speaking with their manager, who is very busy. Two days later I called them back and kindly asked if they had anything available. I was told again that they filled up really quickly and that the earliest they could get me it was next week. There's no problem with this, but the tone that I was given the entire time on both phone calls would make me steer away from this location. I'm generally a pretty nice guy and the attitude that came from the other end of the line was not very friendly. read more

My hair was done my Lisa and the experience was not as great for me because my hair turned out to be frizzy and dry. Also, during the deep conditioning treatment, the lady spat on me couple of times while talking and my hair did not turn out to be soft, smooth, shiny or frizz less. I had a fabulous experience at the Hair Spa! I originally made an afternoon appointment, but due to last minute plans I needed to get my hair in the morning. I called as soon as the salon opened and was greeted warmly by the receptionist. She apologized and explained that they were completely booked, but that she'd called if anything opened up. I've been going to the Hair Spa in Clifton for about 2 years now. I've always gone to Jessica, whose a senior stylists. The experience at the Hair Spa has been phenomenal. You walk in and are always warmly greeting by the person at the front desk. I rarely ever have to wait and I'm tended to with coffee, water, snacks or reading material. Once I sit in the chair it's absolutely awesome! Jessica takes her time and listens intently on what look you want and makes recommendations from there. One of the stresses of moving to a new town is trying to find a location for everything you need. I was lucky enough to be referred to The Hair Spa! What I immediate appreciated was that my appointment was honored. Chris greeted me with a warm smile and offered to hang my jacket. Before she even washed my hair, she took the time to listen to my needs, the reason for my visit and asked key questions to get to know my hair regimen. Chris was super courteous, professional and very friendly! She put me at ease right away by explaining the shampoo and condition products, and she even offered me something to drink (i.e., water, tea or coffee). I never felt rushed; in fact, she took her time with me and meticulously cut my hair. Throughout my hair cut Chis was very engaging as we got to know each other. In the end, she gave me a mirror so I can access her work and she made sure I was content with my haircut. She also recommended a spray leave-in conditioner without trying to make me feel I needed to purchase it or forced to do so. I am super excited that I finally found a salon! read more

Men's haircut (no coloring/highlights, etc.) Ever since my trusty Italian barber up and moved back to Italy several years ago, I had been jumping between cutters because nobody was able to give me a consistently good haircut. My hair is thick and curly so I've had some pretty bad haircuts over the years when they didn't know what they were doing.. Ashley has been cutting my hair for the past couple years about every two months (since she was at her previous location) and she has not disappointed me once. She's given me shorter haircuts (hair an inch long) and longer haircuts (hair 4ish inches long) and I've been happy every time. Lately it has been trimmed neatly on the sides and longer on top so I can brush it and style it with some gel or hairspray. She's listened to what I've wanted and has delivered every time. The location is clean and the staff is always friendly and very helpful. I come after work (no earlier than 5:30pm) so I'm thankful they can accommodate my schedule. read more

The Hair Spa is very relaxed and professional and clean; and all the hair stylists are clearly very passionate about the work they do! Especially Jen Perez, the stylist that I worked with today. She truly is an artist with comb and scissors--and I walked out of The Hair Spa feeling more confident than when I first walked in. May hair was not at all doing good despite of doing everything right, my hair needed professional help at this point and I decided to stop by at this place for a consult. I was introduced to Jess at that point and she listened to me carefully and then suggested the proper care necessary for my hair and set up an appointment right away. During my appointment I felt so comfortable because the staff was extremely friendly, the salon has a very calm atmosphere and I literally felt relaxed. From the wash to the blow dry everything felt just right. After the hair cut and the heat cure treatment my hair felt beautiful, soft, shiny and most importantly healthy! Came here armed with what I thought was a great LivingSocial deal for a deep conditioning treatment, haircut and blowdry. It's no wonder they need LivingSocial & Groupon to get customers in the door... I should have realized what I was in for when the only other customer in the salon also had a LivingSocial deal, and it was The Hair Spa's late night (open until 7PM). The salon I normally go to is POPPIN' during their late night hours with regulars. Clearly not the case here. I proceeded to get a consultation with the stylist. Mediocre at best, despite her experience-dropping "16 years in 'the industry.'" Calm down. The deep conditioning treatment was OK, I probably could have done better myself with an at home, in-shower VO5 hot oil treatment for $5. It dripped all over my neck while I sat under the dryer and then was not rinsed out completely, leaving a lovely residue after my blowout. And then the haircut. Ugh, I'm still upset over it. Mind you, this is a really recent haircut so it's not even close to being grown out. It's easily one of the worst haircuts I've ever had, second only to the time I thought I really wanted short side bangs. I STILL can't tell if she just forgot to put layers on the left side of my face, or thought that this imbalanced look is what I was going for. The overall length is noticeably uneven and although she allegedly "only took an inch!" off, there's definitely more hair missing from my head than I anticipated or wanted. The stylist blew my hair out with the aptitude of...well, of a non-stylist. The quality of the haircut is really, truly terrible. I've already booked a fix-it appointment with my regular stylist. Whom I'll never stray from again. I'd give this place NO stars if I could, although I do have to say that it was a clean salon. I will grudgingly admit that that is worth a star, even though it won't make this horrendous haircut grow out any faster. read more

The customer service was just not what I expected from a salon where you are paying $45+ for a haircut. I never felt special or pampered when getting my hair cut/colored. My stylist was always running back and forth between customers. She rarely showed me the back of my head when finished to see what she did. Now I know why...I went to another salon and they showed me the unevenness of the cut. When I got my hair colored it wasn't what we discussed. The salon is clean with a nice atmosphere, I think they just need to send stylists to classes more often so they can become more skilled. With better customer service, time management and better skills, this could be a great salon! I'm disappointed...I really wanted this place to be good. :( read more

I've been coming to The Hair Spa for years, and found out the hard way that going to a different stylist is not a great move (long story, had to go to someone else once, years ago, as a favor). Kristen is the best, she's a great stylist and she really gets to know her clients. She takes the time to discuss what a client wants and will tell you if something won't work right, and then finds a mutual solution. My hair has a mind of its own, and so far Kristen has been the only one that I totally trust to get it right, make suggestions, and make my hair look truly wonderful. BEWARE! I was a client of this salon for a little over 2 years. I always have stellar reviews, and recommended my stylist to TONS of women. I had to book an appointment once with her colleague because she was not there and I needed to have my hair done for an event. Her colleague wound up botching my highlights. When I showed Jessica pictures she said "I hate to toot my own horn but, I am the best" (I actually still have that conversation). That was strike one. Quite honestly, I think perhaps Jessica got too comfortable. I was about 30 mins late for an appointment (my own fault) and upon calling to notify the salon, Jessica gets on the phone. She then tells me in a very condescending voice "I came in specifically for you today, on my day off". (I had no knowledge of this nor do I keep track of her days as I am assuming they can always change). Mind you, just a few days prior, I had intentions on doing something completely different to my hair which would've taken MUCH longer. So, I was a bit confused how 30 mins would've changed everything. I apologized, and she told me that she could no longer do my haircut or blow dry but only my highlights. I was a little annoyed but again, I was late so, (30 mins) realistically what could I have done? So, I get there and immediately Jessica (the stylist) takes me into a separate room and tells me she "doesn't want any problems, or issues". I say ok... And she proceeds to do my hair. It did seem like she was rushing a bit. She puts me under the lights to develop my highlights. To my surprise, they are "done" very quickly (which I found odd because that never happens). She then removes the foil from my hair in the sink. Mind you, I paid an extra $50 for Olaplex AND a glaze. Both of which you are supposed to leave on for 10 mins or so. She did NOT do that (she normally does). She put one on- combed it through and rinsed me. Then proceeded to apply another and rinse it out not 2 mins after. She then quickly dried a front portion of my hair, says "just like you like it" then proceeds to comment on how my scalp is "sunburnt". I tell her I am pretty sure it's from the lights because it was burning a lot. She ignores my suggestion and suggests it's "sunburn" - it was NOT sunburn. Oh, and my scalp was burned ALOT for the next 3-4 days and hurt like hell I might add. She then rushed me to the front to pay. I got home later that night and realized some parts were a bit underdeveloped. I looked past it, until the following day when my girlfriend told me that parts of my hair "looked very orange". Her and I went through my hair only to find SIGNIFICANT pieces had bled and were very undeveloped along with parts of my hair that were extremely dark and left untouched. I had been going to Jessica for quite some time and she herself, called us "friends". So, naturally I sent her a message and explained to her what happened. I asked for advice, and told her I was a bit disappointed. I was shocked when she responded by saying I was rude, and nasty. (I wasn't). She went on to tell me "call the salon when they are open". I sent her a message back recapping, then explaining my feelings about the last visit and proceeded to tell her because of her attitude, she had just lost a client. She then not 5 mins later blocked me on Facebook. (Mature right?). About a week or two later, she was removed from a local mothers group. She messaged a friend of mine, and proceeded to tell her that I "harassed her". She went on to say some pretty nasty things afterward which included some slandering (all of which I have saved). In conclusion; BEWARE- it is evident to me that this stylist cares more about making money then her clients. Apparently, she'll let a long standing client leave the salon with half-assed highlights and then go as far as to not own up to it and blame the CLIENT rather than herself. To me, this directly affects the salon as well. Shame on you. read more

I have long, curly hair, and I told the stylist explicitly that I wanted to keep my length and just get rid of the split ends. Initially I wanted half an inch, but she convinced me that an inch would be more effective. I also told her I wanted to maintain my long layers and bangs, That being said, she cut off way more than the one inch we agreed on.
