Had an extremely uncomfortable experience with the new hairstylist Liz. To the point I cut the appointment short, paid, thanked her for the trim and left to another salon to finish my service. It felt like she was upset with me from the beginning and the more I opened my mouth the more upset she became. She was extremely rude and rough with me, when I asked about her commission she'd earn for the service, out of curiosity but also because I worked in a dog grooming salon before and understand the grind/want to support other salon workers by tipping well. She told me she was uncomfortable answering which I apologized for making her uncomfortable and remained silent. But after that she would roughly pull my hair and demand what I wanted in a very curt manner. I asked for her advice for an alternative when she told me the hairstyle I wanted wouldn't suit me, but instead of offering one she just kept asking me to tell her what I wanted very angrily. I normally am not talkative as I am very shy and anxious, but I wanted to get out of my shell and practice my English and my social skills, and was very upset with the reaction I was met with. It was not my intention to insult or offend the stylist, but I don't believe that was a mature or professional way to respond to an innocent question, which i apologized for asking. There was no need to be rough with me. I still paid the full price of $85 despite leaving looking like a mess and without the hairstyle I wanted and specifically went to this stylist to receive, only got my hair washed and a trim on my edges. I was going to let it go as the stylist told me she'd just started a couple weeks ago and I understand everyone has hard days, but the salon made an instagram post the day after about "being besties with your stylist is the best" and prioritizing making a safe space for clients. it upsets me seeing posts like this when I had to go to the salon across the street due to how antagonistic Liz was. I just wanted a hush cut dawg go across the street or avoid booking with @cozarthair on ig. Big shame because she's clearly very talented. read more

I came to the Salon recently to see my favorite stylist Liz @cozarthair on Instagram. I came in for a curly cut & the idea to give my hair a little bit of life with some possible color. Liz was able to bring my hair back to life and healthy curls after it being so dull and damaged. When it came to color, I asked liz what she recommended and allowed her to have freedom on how to color and style it. Due to my jobs restrictions her creativity range was a bit restricted, but she was able to give me face frame highlight and give my hair a real upgrade! when returning back to work I received so many compliments from coworkers and friends! I felt so confident again & my hair is still so beautiful as the day I left! The salon staff and owners where extremely kind and welcoming to me and was able to schedule me in a timely manor. Called Parlor after misplacing a gift card I received as a raffle prize. This gift card does not have an expiration date or policy on its use. I was put on hold after being looked up in their system and since I'm not a regular and they already got their money the front desk girl told me the manager said I can't use it. Really crappy but very Montclair. Pretty crappy and bogus in a time of Covid and much needed haircuts. Other salons will help a girl out and get a big tip from me. I guess I've heard it all now. I called to make an appointment for a single process. Just my roots. Basic brown color. I was told because I've never been there before I'd need a consultation to discuss the best course of action for my hair. I assumed it meant I come in a few min earlier than my appointment. Nope. She said to come in a day prior and it takes about 15 min. I was floored. I've gone to some pretty amazing salons in my lifetime and I've never been told to come in for a consultation for a single process ! It's 2022 time to join the new ages please. Okay, so I just went back to Parlor for my second time to have my ombré upgraded to balayage and to get a trim. I'm even more pleased this time around than I was on my first visit (when I gave it a 4-star rating)! Firstly, even though this time around *I* ended up coming in late, Danielle still found the time to blow out and curl my hair, despite warning me that she might not have time even for a blowout. Secondly, when I described what I wanted done with my hair, she knew exactly what to do, even though it was different from what she did last time. She stripped my hair to just the right color - no toner needed! I was very impressed! Thirdly, I ended up getting a bomb head massage during my hair washing, which let's face it, is one of the best parts of getting your hair done. Fourthly, everyone there is super friendly and attentive. They made sure I had whatever drink or reading material I wanted and everyone was just super accommodating. Finally, I think I would pay Danielle just to have a conversation with me for an hour. I probably burned a couple hundred calories just from laughing at all the stories we told one another. I really wish more of their happy clients would review this place so their overall rating would go up. They deserve way more than their current overall rating! I presume that a lot has changed in the staff and the way it's run since the negative reviews back in '08/'09. read more

Erica is amazing!!! I can't say enough wonderful things about her. I recently moved to another town and did the mistake of trying a new stylist since Erica was too far away for me. Well the new stylist completely butchered my hair because of which I completely lost my confidence for the last 2 months :(. Parlor, I am back from California and coming your way! Parlor is an amazing salon. There are a lot of salons that can do cuts and colors but lets face it more than half of those salons are either gossipy, pressure you into buying their products, or just straight up cold. You wont find that here. Chrissie did my hair for years before I had to move to Cali. She even fixed my color effortlessly when I really screwed it up by taking the bottle into my own hands. Didnt make me feel bad at all. In fact, she always makes me feel great whenever I leave the salon and thats exactly what every woman should be paying for. The people at Parlor are trendy but also classic. This place just has good vibes. The girls are nice, stylish, down to earth and really care about your hair. If you tell Chrissie what you want, she does it. Shes a true artist and if you need a couple different shades shell mix em. No lazy colorist here. she just makes your hair look good however she has to. She'll make suggestions but shes not an egotistic colorist which is SO refreshing. She rocks. Id trust her with my life let alone my hair. I cant stand leaving a salon feeling like I know too much about other stylists drama and my hair wasnt the main focus of my 2 +hours of being there. You wont see that here. You get the royal treatment. They use great products and their prices are right where they should be. I feel happy everytime I leave and my hair "sparkles" Thanks Parlor!!! I never write reviews, but I really haven't had an experience like this. I got a balayage done by Erica. I have dark brown hair. I showed her a few pictures of what I wanted. She glanced at them, didn't ask any questions-- and started doing it. I was surprised, but because the website says she's a fearless colorist I thought damn, she must be good and know what she's doing. I was excited. Skip to the end result-- because she took me late, and i had to leave, i left with my hair wet. She didn't even dry a piece to see how it came out because she already had her next client. As I was driving home, I looked in the mirror as my hair was drying. It was literally bright orange. Like BRIGHT orange. And, i don't even feel like it was nice painted balayage. It was a big mush of orange. Next day I went back. She toned it, cut my hair, and curled it all for free. That was nice, but I still wasted $200 dollars on my crap hair that is still orange. It was better for the first few days, and now, I can't even look in the mirror again. What a waste of money and time. The salon was nice, clean, all workers were nice.. but I'm just really disappointed. Also, for the cut, it is horrible. IDK. Maybe she was having a bad week. I really like the atmosphere here (the music is fantastic!), and everyone is very friendly. I've been for a blow-out and a cut on two separate occasions. I have another appointment coming up. I appreciate the natural products and Aveda products, and the lounge up above is a comfortable place to wait (with coffee!) or allow your color to set. And yes, the hair washers give great head massages! I'm not one to be too directive with my hair, so I liked that the stylists were happy to take charge without pushing me too much. read more

I walked in to Parlor, because Comb across the street was closed. First impression; music was good (Elvis Costello), friendly staff. Commence cutting, asked for it short on sides and back and longer on top. Got what I asked for but at a significantly less quality than what I imagined. Then paid $40 for what more or less amounted to a touch up. Only by checking everything out back at my apartment did I see all of the long, untouched hairs popping out all over. Maybe it's my fault for not fully examining my hair, but you'd think I should be able to trust them. I wish them well, but I won't be returning here again. It should not surprise Candice that I am writing a soliloquy about how amazing she is. Candice started doing my hair 2 years ago, and I followed her from Manhattan to Montclair because she is THAT GOOD (for perspective, I live in Brooklyn). Candice has helped shape my hair from crazy and crunchy to soft and pretty. I have never dyed my hair before in my life, and she made a seemingly scary process wonderful and enjoyable despite sitting in a chair for hours and hours. I got balayage/ombre and a cut and my hair is pretty, soft, and so "me". Had highlights done by Danielle initially and she did a great job. A few months later, I decided I wanted to do platinum. Danielle spent just about 4 hours with me, bleaching, toning, etc, and I am so happy with the end result. It's not easy to get platinum right but she did it! Parlor is the ONLY place I will let touch my hair. I have been going there since it opened and Wendy blows me away every time. I get a "where do you get your hair done" from people out and about at least once a month if not more. My hair is really important to me, as is my whole 'look' and Wendy gets it right every time and makes me feel like a million bucks. The other girls are fabulous too. I highly recommend Parlor to anyone who wants anything from a trim, to a complete overhaul. They know what they're doing and take it slow and LISTEN, which is amazing for anyone who is timid about getting their hair cut. I have been going to Parlor since I moved to North Jersey about 5 years ago. I recently moved to Englewood, so Parlor is not that convenient for me to get to anymore, however I am not planning on switching salons anytime soon. Torre, Parlor's stylist and hair colorist is absolutely the best. I have been coloring my hair red as long as I can remember, but it has never looked better than in the last 5 years. My color stays on long & vibrant, and the hair looks healthy. I receive tons of complements on my hair wherever I go. The salon has a great friendly vibe, it's clean and nicely designed. They always play really awesome, non cheesy music. Wendy, the owner features young artists, so there's always new artwork on the walls. Definitely 5 stars! read more

I never ever write reviews but what Danielle did to my hair made me happier than I've ever been with my hair. I got a half balayage and I wanted a very specific honey blonde and some layers and Danielle got it PERFECT! Not to mention she was the sweetest, most down to earth, stylist I've ever been with! And the whole treatment was wayy cheaper than I expected. When I left they gave me a little welcome to our salon bag and I had unlimited coffee - it was just outstanding. I've been salon hopping in Montclair for almost 3 years, never seeming to find that perfect fit of professional and talented staff, good communication, lack of snobbishness, and affordability. I found all this and more at Parlor. I discovered Parlor when I won a free blowout they were offering as part of a promotion for a local mommy party for Mother's Day weekend. I was impressed by Erica, the woman who did my hair, and by the rest of the staff as well. Down to earth and friendly, they seemed to genuinely love their jobs and their clients, and they made me feel right at home. Erica did a great job so I decided to return to try out her haircut, since I was due for one anyway. Finally! A hairdresser who actively listens to my concerns, understands my questions, and gives expert advice (on hair care!). She didn't try to sell me any products or recommend additional services. When I asked about them, she gave me her opinions but again, did not try to sell. Erica let me in on her styling secrets that I can use at home, and told me what she was about to do before she did it. She encouraged me to let her know about any adjustments I wanted along the way. Her expertise and confidence totally sold me (not to mention her sweet personality); I let her do her thing and I am SO happy with my cut and style! I have been going to Parlor for over three years now. I have had haircuts from almost all of the stylists before deciding to see Wendy (the co-owner) exclusively. Each time I go, someone greets me, takes my coat, and offers me something to drink while I wait. I always decline because I'm never kept waiting long enough to need anything. Not only do I feel special when I'm there, I leave feeling great about the way I look. The decor and the atmosphere are very trendy and welcoming, and each time I go there is new art from a local artist the owners have chosen to showcase. I am moving out of the area at the end of the summer and I have no plans to find a new hair place where I go. Parlor will be worth the 2 1/2 hour trip back to Montclair. read more

Maureen is amazing! I rarely leave reviews but felt so compelled to share how happy she's made me. I went in thinking I had dry, completely damaged hair...it was totally lifeless and nothing I tried could bring it back to life. The night before my appointment, I found an old selfie of a great style I had, showed it to her and figured that was out since my hair has thinned out so much postpartum. There was no way a stylist could take my damaged hair and give me gorgeous, voluminous locks again. An hour with Maureen changed all that. She's a magician (and so easy to talk to and friendly!) and I'm so thankful it was her chair that I was put in. I'm pretty non-committal when it comes to hair, but now I'm Parlor and Maureen for life. read more

I want to preface this review by saying my colorist and everyone at the salon was very nice and accommodating. Unfortunately, the color that resulted was horrible and has been an eye sore for me for weeks. Further, with the amount of toning coloring in the span of 1 month, my previously healthy hair is fried and split. VISIT 1: Erica gave me sparse bright blonde balayage highlights on my jet black hair. I had to wear a hat to work because it looked so bad. VISIT 2: I went back the next day and she toned it down. Due to a misunderstanding in explaining that I wanted Balayage Ombre rather than random balayage highlights (completely my fault), we scheduled another balayage appointment. Mind you, I know I am not good at verbalizing what I want so I came in to the consultation with minimum 20 pictures. But I understand what I wanted wasn't communicated so I gladly made another appointment. VISIT 3: This was the full balayage ombre visit. It lasted nearly 2.5 hours. The entire appointment was quiet and a little awkward. I tried to make conversation since it was such a long time sitting in the chair staring at myself, but I don't think she was too interested. That aside, I left with better balayage ombre on my hair, however, it was still BRIGHT BLONDE (extremely brassy) with no color progression. BRIGHT BLOND (orange) on jet black hair is not a good look. VISIT 4: At this point, I was tired and really annoyed but still went back to get it toned down. Erica blow dried it and stayed late, which was extremely nice, to make sure it looked ok before I left- so I wouldn't need to come back. After blowdrying, I realized there were LARGE chunks of black in the front on both sides and in the back that have not been colored- in ANY of the 4 visits. I was really tired of coming back to the salon so Erica told me that when I come back for a haircut, she would fix the smaller pieces. I let a little over a month pass to let my hair breath before coloring again. I called Rosemary to get an appointment for a cut and color fix and she said Erica was pretty booked until after the date of an event I have to go to. I desperately needed to get my hair fixed before then so decided to go to another salon. (The other salon thought I did it myself at home and advised me to go to the salon the first time next time -___-) I guess serves me right for going to the same colorist who did not know what to be doing in my hair. I'm sure Erica does excellent work on others, but I can honestly say that for black or dark hair and balayage ombre, she is not the person to go to. I gave Parlor 2 starts for how friendly they are, but the color was horrible. read more

The receptionist is always kind and accommodating and the hair washers give great head massages. It's really hard for me to get all jazzed up about a hair salon so 3 stars it is. I've been getting my hair done here for years now and love them. Danielle has always done a great job with my color and cut. I don't do anything fancy (just cover the grays) and she matches my natural color so well that people don't think I dye my hair. I've tried different styles and she always knows what will work for me and what won't. I also know I get a good cut consistently since I can let it grow out a couple of months and it still looks good. When I got married they opened early for us and could not have been better. Parlor is a clean, bright salon where everyone seems very friendly and the girls all get along well. They keep to their schedule (I have never once had to wait even five minutes for my appointment) and are really accommodating. Danielle is one of the best colorists and cutters I've ever been to. When I relocated to Brooklyn, I tried (in vain) to find a colorist for two full years (trying both Manhattan and Brooklyn) and didn't seem to find anyone who was even remotely as good as she was.
