We got in really late in our first night in Milan. We walked in this restaurant at 1150PM and they close at 1230. They still allowed us to eat :) We went here in a whim, and only because nothing else was open. Omg, this was such a great find! Everything tasted amazing. This restaurant set a good tone for the rest of our Italy trip. First meal and in Italy and it wasn't even a highly reviewed spot on my yelp list. Everything tasted amazing!! We arrived at 7.30 pm on a Saturday evening without a reservation. Around 1 hour later, there were no more tables and people started to have to wait in line. In addition, this place is quite small. It has only around 15 tables. Thus, it is better to make a reservation. The food is very good. I would highly recommend Spaghetti Portobello, which is basically seafood spaghetti. Their menu is diverse: pasta, pizza, second dishes with fishes or meats, seafood salad, cheese, etc. You would rarely find cheaper restaurants than this in Milan. The restaurant is located in a quiet corner near Corso Buenos Aires, which is one of the major streets in Milan for shopping. It just takes ~10-15 minutes of walking to escape the busy street and the crowds to enjoy great food. read more

Just what you need. It has everything I love about Italy. I could eat here every day. Portobello has been here since the late 70's. The local guy that turned me on to it reveled in the throw back look of the place. As an outsider I cannot parse the subtle aesthetic signs of 70's Italy from the decor but I can say it has the fabric table cloth, 2 rooms, seafood bar, pizza oven, friendly server vibe I see all over this city but it just is so smooth and natural here. People fill up the place and have a good time. I just contains all the exuberant talkative energy of Italian dinners. So the food. I have never had a bad meal and there is lots I'd like to try but I always end up with the same meal. I have been here more than any other resturant in Milan but I just can come enough as a visit to the city to get beyond my fix. Which is the seafood salad and mix seafood pasta. I think of this a seafood and pizza place. Fresh and savory. Oh how I love seafood salad in Italy. I eat plenty of Italian food at home in the States but I never eat seafood salad out of the country. It doesn't seem as fresh or at home. If I had one critique is the bread they put on the table is boring and a bit dry. They could do better. Anyway. I wouldn't give this spot away if I lived here and had to fight a crowd. There are plenty of fancier spots in the city and I suppose everyone should find their own goto place for comfort foods. But if you are in the neighborhood skip the fancy stuff and stop by and try my favorite spot. read more

Get there right at 7pm, if you do not have reservations and good luck. We got lucky and got a table. First, each of us had a simple green salad with oil and vinegar. My wife had spaghetti alla carbonara as her main course and she raved about how delicious it was. I chose to get a pizza with mushrooms and it was perfect. The key to the pizza was the dough. The pizza was seasoned perfectly and we watched as they took it out of the brick oven, put it on a plate, and in a matter of seconds it was in front of me. At around 7:10 the locals started pouring in and we watched non-reservation people in groups get turned away one after the other. The place was full of chatter and smiling people. We were received so badly... We ask a table for three, the waiter was so cold with us, maybe because we are strangers (from France). We decided to order pasta ( arrabiata, al limone and carbonara) but the atmosphere was so cold and we were so uncomfortable, so i can't really tell if this was good or not. My straight to the point review: Good: -good/quick service. It was the first time ever during our Europe trip that a cook asked us how we like our food -beer was reasonably priced at 3E -located relatively close to the central station -food was awesome! (See picture of my Pizza with fries and spicy salami) Bad: -size of the coffee compared to America was tiny (see picture) -service charge of 2E per person to dine-in -it was warm in the restaurant, which made it just a little bit difficult to eat a pizza Tip: ask waitress to add extra ingredients for 1.50E per topping I would definitely reco this place for the great tasting pizzas, portion size and value. read more

Reviews are tricky to write because the taste is so subjective...I cannot write a review after the first visit but I need few visits to consolidate my idea and have my opinion and here is coming now my opinion about the place. Well Portobello is an amazing place, old style, you can tell that the design of the place is also old, really old, but it has his traditional fashion that you could sense also in their meals and menu. I had a delicious Antipasto of chacutterie of different kinds of products from cured pork meat (4 slices of Salame Milano, 4 Slices of Coppa di Piacenza and 4 slices of Prosciutto Crudo) and later on Scaloppine with lemon, like my mom is used to make them, not too lemony and not too butter-y, thats the key ingredient for a good restaurant, making you feel welcome and home, and the price, 26 euro per person is more than honest, thank you! read more

There is good Italian food in Italy and there is sadly bad Italian food in Italy. This place sets the bar for good Italian food. Everything is fresh and bursting with flavor. Lovely family style restaurant. Staff were very friendly and seated us even though we had no reservation. The atmosphere was lovely and the place was full of locals which added to the ambience. Really enjoyed the food and wine and I was very pleased with the bill when it came. Great value for money. Will certainly return the next time I visit Milan. read more
