The meats included prosciutto, speck, and a couple salamis. The cheeses were soft but not sharp or moldy. Overall, it was a pleasant and mild board. Next, we had the Milanese risotto with saffron. I prefer the rice to be a little softer; nevertheless, the flavors were delicious. Our main course was steak over arugula and parmigiana cheese. It was a small portion but good. I would have prefer the steak to be cooked a little rarer with more sear. For dessert, we had these chocolate pieces. It has the same granulated yet solidified texture as halva. It was excellent.

The conchetta was quite dry and bland. Just a thin pork cutlet breaded that needed salt and/or a dipping sauce. And by the bone, still very raw. I informed the server, but they just dismissed me and said it's normal. Is it really normal to serve raw pork?? For it being their "signature dish", I was hoping for it to be better. Risotto was al dente and pretty good. We got 2 portions but when serving, we saw them save a portion for a table that didnt order any risotto. Nice, for that table. but it seems like we didn't get the full 2 portions.

I was there in the summer and asked the staff for a recommendation (something I always do when I eat alone). They pointed me toward a salad I would not have ordered on my own. It was a mix of arugula-style greens with beet and watermelon that hit sweet, savory, and salty all at once. The chicken with fresh peaches was equally great. Everything tasted like it belonged together on the plate. Then the panna cotta. This was the grand finale. Easily the best I have ever had. Smooth and creamy with that texture that is just barely set, still a little loose. It came with what I believe was a grape must sauce and I am still thinking about it.

It went much quicker and I enjoyed a nice conversation with the bartender. Great service from all the staff! 5* Thanks to an earlier recommendation from a tour guide, I wanted to try the local specialty, the veal cutlet. They had it on the menu, so it was an easy choice. It reminded me of a Wienerschnitzel. The crossed cuts in the breading were something I noticed in other Milan restaurants. I enjoyed the tomatoes and basil. All the veggies have been so so fresh. It has been a welcome delight with meals. It was a tasty dish. I had the opportunity to try the Ossobucco (veal shank) with saffron risotto. Wow, the veal was incredibly tender. Loved it and would have preferred it over the cutlet. The risotto was supposed to be a Milan specialty, so it was nice to try. And the bread plate? How often does the free bread plate get its own entry? Well, these bread "chips" (?) were so good...fresh (see picture). they practically melted in the mouth. I couldn't get enough. Loved this little neighborhood gem. I'd definitely go back and wholeheartedly recommend them.

Usually we would never stand in line for food/drinks but I really wanted to try this place and so we decided to gave it a few minutes to see how the line was moving. This was worth the 20-25 minute wait (especially since most of the area was shaded... had it not been I know we would have decided on a plan B). We were told our table was on the second floor so headed up the cute narrow staircase in the back where we were immediately greeted by the servers up there. I loved how all the servers greeted you as you walked through the restaurant. Loved the ambiance upstairs too with the brick walls, balcony windows open and the fairy-lights intertwined with branches covering the ceiling. Red checkered tablecloths covered all of the tables and it was very cozy (tight). We ordered the set lunch. The starter, main plus side runs 25 Euros. The main plus side was I think 17 or 18 Euros? They have a limited menu so everything came out quickly (maybe 3 minutes after our server took our order)? Honestly this was a lot of food... we ended up taking one whole main dish to go since my husband and son both got the coteletta (Milanese pork chop) and we all ended up sharing with each other. I got the porchetta and it was so rich and flavorful. The grilled veggies and the roasted potatoes were also excellent. My son thought his salad was a bit too salty for his taste though. The tiramisu served in a mug was very delicious. When we asked for the check we were told we were table 15. We were a bit confused but ended up getting clarification that we were to tell the cashier downstairs our table number in order to check out at the register. Overall we had a lovely lunch!

We ate on the beautiful terrace which faces the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana art museum. The small piazza where Al Mercante is located was very quiet at night. The interior of Al Mercante is quite elegant. While the majority of the clientele were foreigners, there was small wedding party a couple of tables over. We had the very good fortune to be waited on by Angelo, a professional waiter who loves his job (23 years at Al Mercante!) and who ensured that we had a fine dining experience. Angelo speaks beautiful Spanish and we were able to have a more complete discussion than usual about the menu. I've managed to forget the details of the wonderful food we ate so I hope I. don't commit any serious omissions as I reconstruct our meal. We had an appetizer which I cannot recall. I think it was some sort of raw fish (crudo sounds better) with just a hint of citrus almost like an Italian version of ceviche. Our primo (shared) was wonderful: porcini mushrooms on roasted potatoes. What great taste from two simple ingredients. The secondo (also shared) was salmon coated in sliced almonds and a wonderful lemony sauce. Quite simply it was perfect. We had a terrific white wine that might have been a vermentino. Angelo didn't have biscotti with vino santo so he suggested sbrisolona -- another kind of dessert biscuit. -- that seemed to be homemade -- and a digestivo. In between all of this were wonderful amuse bouche. Here's what I'd like you to know: this was a wonderful, elegant meal served by a very professional waiter in beautiful surroundings. Al Mercante provided a delightful meal on our last evening in Milan.
