If you go to Milan, you should stop here. It is located just behind the Galleria (world's oldest shopping mall) and Il Duomo (the marble cathedral). Yes, it is a little bit "touristy", but lots of fun. They have savory (such as prosciutto and cheese) and sweet (chocolate). I have been several times and it is not unusual for the line to be down the block. If so, divide and conquer: One person find a place to sit (steps in front of the cathedral?) while the other goes to order and bring back the goodies. read more

Ask any Milanese what they had as a kid and all of them have mentioned this place at least once, and it's pretty clear why. Panzerotto Luini serves fried and baked pastries, and is right in the middle of Milan's downtown area between the Galleria, Duomo, and other really prominent landmarks, so you know this place will be PACKED. Yeah, the wait was long but totally worth it, especially since they have 4 identical lines where they have 4 of the same items in a row. I ordered the Luini Classico, Luini Misto, Cannoncini, Luini Dolce, and 2 Pane Dolce-Cremo. Note that they don't have everything out on the menu at once since they go through theirenu fast, so don't have your heart set out on trying to get a particular item if they run out of something. Baked and fried goods galore regardless of what you get. Luini Classico: 5/5 The Citizen Kane of Italian hot pockets. Perfection in 2.60 euros a Panzerotto. I got mine baked and it was perfectly flakey while staying firm. Really good stuff. Misto: 5/5 I think this one had the ham and cheese and it was superb too. Honestly can't go wrong with this or the Classico but today both were available. Very warm which is great for a cold day in December. Cannoncini: 5/5 A Genoese special in Milan, and it was also superb! Honestly can't go wrong with it. Pane Dolce-Cremo 4.5/5: Cream filled donut balls, but Italian and solid. I'm normally not a fan but it works well. Luini Dolce: 4/5 A hardish toffee with nuts, it was interesting to have but not my favorite thing here. Overall, this is Italian Fast Food at its best. As others have said, there will be a queue but it doesn't take too long. This is one of those must-try street food items while in Milan as Panzerotti is local and Luini is famous for them. We got two to try; Luini Classico and Luini Misto. I enjoyed it for what it was: a fresh hot pocket of cheese and tomato. Hubby was a little less impressed. I read about this place before visiting Milan but didn't really look for where it is located. So I was happy to see it while walking around Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. It is a small shop with a lot of options to choose. We saw there was on line at the front entrance, so, we went to order a Ham & Mozzarella Panzerotti to try. I was kind of disappointed with it as all the videos I saw on YouTube was the mozzarella cheese was smooth and melting with a first bite. My was just like a piece of cheese stuffed with a small ham inside a fried dough. I guess it must be the time (5pm) we visited with not many people. A lifesaver when you're visiting the Duomo! Although the line seems intimidating at first, it goes by super fast (there are, however, no places to sit). The panzerotti is basically yeasty fry bread stuffed with tomato sauce and hot salami--in my opinion the better version of pizza. And they're only €3 so an absolute steal! This location was a few hundred feet away from the hotel we were staying at. The first day when we were checking in, there were atleast 100 people waiting in line for some Luini. We knew that something good was inside that pick up restaurant. I did my research as soon as we checked into our hotel. A bit of a story behind this pick up shop, Giuseppina Luini came to Milan from Puglia. With her came the idea of making panzerottis. Panzerotti is a savory treat with with a fluffy dough filled with whatever flavors they put in it. All I know is that whatever flavors I tried, mozzarella with tomatoes or cheese with onion etc... It was the softest dough baked good I ate in my life. We ate this almost everyday on the go in between lunch or dinner. The prefect snack and happiness in a bite of Milan. Ok so its not the healthiest food around but you have to try the panzerotti at least once in your lifetime. If your in Milan, you gotta go, period. Note that there are usually 2 lines, each one flowing down in different directions along the street. I grew up in Milan and I remember getting a panzerotto (actually 2 of them) every time I skipped school. When I land in Milan, Luini is the first or second spot I visit (before or after Spontini). Some of my old friends claim that the quality decreased over time, but I disagree, the panzerotto is always amazing and delicious. I only get the panzerotto Classico, which is basically a fried mini calzone filled with tomato sauce and mozzarella. That's the item to get, everything else is still good, but not iconic. The place is usually packed and you'll find two long lines at the two doors. Back in the day there were no lines, just a mass of people elbowing each other to get the amazing panzerotto. This was recommended as a go to spot for anyone visiting Milan so I had to come check it out. After doing some shopping I got kind of hungry so I walked over to get the panzerotti. It was a long line because this place was a small stall but long line means it must be worth the wait! Line moved pretty quickly, I think it probably took 5 - 10 minutes. Upon entering the store, you get a bunch of options on panzerottis to order. I got the one with mozzarella and tomato sauce. It was very crispy on the outside, and the cheese was perfectly melted on the inside, I love that it was so cheesy that you could keep pulling the cheese into a huge string. So fun! If you go to Milan and missed out on Luini I don't know what to say to you except that you immediately book a flight and go get some Luini. This is the best spot in Milan to have authentic Italian street food. Our hotel was right next door to this spot. Their is no seating only take out and the lines are long specially during lunch hour. They close at 8pm considering they are in the smack middle of Milan central. Most of the people who are in line are locals but a lot of tourists here about this spot and end up eating here. I ate all sorts of calzones and small pizza pies here and everyone of them were delicious. Some days we ate this twice a day it was that good. By the end of the trip the employees knew us by name and we were treated like locals and they only gave us the freshest of the fresh stuff. 5 star street food as authentic as it gets. read more

Way too much dough, virtually no filling. One of the 10 panzerotti's I ordered was mixed berries and custard. When I started eating it I thought they gave me an incorrect pie, but upon eating further I realized the hard, solid mass in the middle surrounded by jam ("mixed berries") was... the custard. It was the consistency of marzipan/fondant. One of the other pies I tried was mozzarella and tomato. The middle was 98% an air space and the inner walls had a minuscule splattering of tomato paste and a small lump of cheese on one of the inside walls. Again, mostly just dough--regardless of the savory/sweet options. I *really* struggle to understand why this place is so highly rated. This is a review for a visit in late October. This is probably my fourth or fifth time to this location after discovering it on a travel blog. There's generally a small but quick moving line outdoors, so just queue up and be patient. This location only takes euros so make sure you have them. I generally order the mozzarella and tomato. It's a soft fried dough with plenty of filling inside. I never think one is enough so I usually get two and a beverage. There aren't any seats at this Takeaway location but you may find Somewhere to sit around the corner near the other shops and office buildings, and most likely it will be a stone wall or curb. All the items look freshly prepared. Order a few and try them all. It helps to maybe look at the menu on the wall or online to see what you want to help expedite your order. Solid place for a quick bite near the Milan Duomo. Luini is most famous for its panzerroti, small savory turnovers that resemble calzones (They offer calzones too!). We ordered mozzarella with salami, mozzarella with tomatoes, vegetables, and an olive loaf. Always go for fried Panzerotto! I tried a bite of each, and my favorite was with salami. The bread was warm and toasty, perfect for a cold day in Milan. I wish they put more stuffing in the panzerroti because at times it felt like I was just eating a small loaf of bread. The olive loaf was actually one of my favorites. Your fingers get a bit oily from tearing off pieces, but the bread is super yummy and subtly salty/savory. Taken here by a local friend, I expected an American 'calzone' type dough. What I experienced is a ricotta cheese and spinach filling wrapped in 'fry bread': the sweet 'fried dough' you get at a fair and usually cover in powdered sugar. This is what they use to wrap their fillings. My selection of 'Ricotta and Spinach', is listed in the 'fried luini' category of the menu. They also have 'luini al forno' (baked) category which may or may not have this same sweet dough. I am not inclined to find out. The 'dolce' category makes much more sense for this sweet dough than the mozzarella and cheese (etc.), savory options. Perhaps in the future I may try a 'dolce' option now that I know what to expect. This is a very popular spot. The line is long and they have a person dedicated to keeping the line in order. Be sure to check your order before paying, the line moves fast, and I did not get what I ordered.
