I always use the drive-thru here and am taken care of quickly with such friendly service. I know this is a place known for beef, but I love the spicy chicken salad. You can get it in the combo too, if you ask for the spicy instead of regular, with no extra charge. If you stop by in the springtime, the lemon cake shake is also to die for. read more

I'm a Portillo's fan! We've come here a handful of times over the past year, and I think what puts them a step ahead of other similar spots is their service. I am a Portillo's rewards member, so pretty often, I get a coupon for a cheese sauce with a fry order or BOGO sandwich or similar. The staff is always so friendly and helpful getting the put in. I've even been there when they are bringing around free samples for folks to try new things. That's just a level of service you won't find at other fast casual chain spots that sets them apart. What I LOVE here: - Hot italian beef of course (sometimes I get as a bowl) with the hot and sweet peppers both - Cheese sauce - fries are simply a vehicle for this perfection - Shakes - cake shake is classic, but I love their others too like the peppermint seasonal one - Of course, can't go wrong with a Chicago dog. To me, the ambiance here is great too. We always end up eating in since the hot italian beef can get messy, and for this type of place, they've put a ton of effort into the decor and ambiance. I really enjoy this Portillo's location. Every time I have visited, the food has been good and the service has been solid. The inside has that classic Chicago gangster theme that Portillo's is known for, which I think adds a lot of charm. This location does not seem very busy though, and I have barely ever seen the upstairs seating open, which is a bit of a bummer. It can also feel a little eerie when there are not many people inside. I usually go for the Italian beef sandwich and it never disappoints. I would skip the burgers since they taste a bit plain to me. Lots of staff around, but honestly, not really available to help or say hello. It look at least 30 minutes for me to get signed up for the rewards program and to apply my free French fry for joining. Crazy how much of a process that was. Visited for a late night Friday dinner. Ordered Chicago dog, onion rings, and French fries. Food was fine. I wish the Chicago dog was much warmer. Onion rings were my favorite side. I could have passed on the French fries. I noticed the chocolate cake slice and knew I had to try that. It was good and if I'm in the mood for a slice of chocolate cake and I'm near a Portillo's I'd stop to get a slice. My friend tried the lemon cake and enjoyed that. I will mention in the restaurant they show slices of chocolate cake that are huge. We were excited to find Portillo's in Minnesota since it's original chain is out of Chicago! My Husband and I tried the big Italian beef, the polish and their chocolate cake shake. The big Italian tasted like it was devoid of flavor. It had all of the components of the Italian beef but lacked the juiciness. My polish dog was quite disappointing. It didn't have any flavor and the polish seem a bit overdone or just sitting under a warmer for too long that it dried out and became rubbery. The chocolate cake shake was amazing and probably the only reason why we would return. Service is fairly quick and the ambiance was nice and I loved the details around the restaurant. read more

Won't be back, it was like a carnival, first there is not much direction where to order then once we did we waited 25 minutes for our food to come up down the hallway. While we waited we watched people walking in the door and wondering where to go just like us. I also ordered a slice of their new lemon cake, he said it would likely be a 20 minute wait, I said that was fine as we were eating dinner there also. So, while in town for work, I decided to see what the fuss was all about. Staff was friendly and recommended the Italian Beef Sandwich - not my usual kind of thing, but I went for it. The full dips, half dips etc. (the Roseville location didn't even know what that is!, they look at you as if they've just been 2 days after weaned off nappies.) I was so embarrassed after recommending this place. I did not know that the real Portillos was bought by some entity that had nothing to do with food. Stay away!! They no longer use fresh beef (Iit's all dryly frozen) Then it's not cooked the beef italian (or Chicago) style. They roast it until all the juices are dead then slap on a really wanky extremely vinegary giardiniera is putrid (er, I mean giardiniera). And as a special bonus! You get bus that have been reserved for days, dried, crumbly and stale. Yes, there is a lot of dining space available because no one wants to eat here.
