On a road trip and wanted something quick and easy for lunch. One of the riders hadn't been to a Portillo's before and wanted to try it. This location had plenty of parking and seating, so that was a big plus. Service was very quick here, even though it was pretty busy. I decided to try something new and got the beef bowl, which was basically the beef sandwich without the bread. I liked it, even though it was pretty liquidy (it is an Italian beef, after all). Easy in and off from the interstate and quick made this an excellent road trip stop. read more

I mean, this is the spot. We split a beef and a dog and it was the perfect amount of food. We tried the Dr Pepper shake and it was good. But nothing beats the cake shake if you're looking for something sweet. They have kiosks now that you can order at, and I fucking love that. Food came up quick and everyone is always super friendly. Always have to stop when I'm around. read more

Portillo's Merrillville - That's all that's left for now. I waited too long to take the picture. - Burgers Near Me - Merrillville, Indiana

The service was fine. I went through the drive-through. It was fast however I ordered two cheeseburgers that wasn't even room temperature. The cheese wasn't melted. weren't worth eating. Because they were so cold I couldn't believe it. How could they sell this to their patrons every time I go to Portillo's there's something wrong with the food. I was passing by and decided to try it again this time I mean it I will never never go back to this particular Portillo. I actually got home and called and asked to speak to the manager and was on hold for 35 minutes and the manager never came to the phone read more

We had stopped here due to us needing something to eat on our way back home. We had went through the drive through which service was slow. They had took our order but then we sat in the line for a while. After we got to the checkout window we had paid and then they asked us to pull to the side to wait for the food and they would bring it out to us. We waited maybe 10min and then they brought the food out to us. The food was delicious and there wasn't any issues with it. Prices are on the higher end but it's worth it. read more

The kiosks are a nice addition so that you don't have to wait in line to order, but I had cash and had to walk up to the first cashier, who was very helpful, polite and friendly. I ordered the 2 hotdog meal and she let me mix them up: 1 Chicago Style hotdog with one Chilidog with extra onions. I also got crinkle fries and an Arnold Palmer to drink. The vibe (ambience) was nice. They were playing big band & jazz music from the 30's and 40's. Good stuff. I usually don't sit down inside and eat there, but go through the drive thru, but I don't regret taking a moment to enjoy a good hotdog and relax. Check them out when you're in the area. read more

On our recent road trip back from vacation, we found ourselves north of Indy and needing food for the fam. Cue the delicious hotdogs and Italian beef that Portillo's can provide! It was a bit of chaos when we arrived, but we were able to find a table. My husband went up to order, and we got our food relatively quickly. I love that these Chicago dogs are the star of the table, but on this most recent visit I actually went with the Italian beef with the au jus on the side. It hit the spot that you crave on a road trip. The kids liked their hot dog and chicken tender meals, and we all shared a slice of chocolate cake. When you're wanting a break from other fast food, Portillo's can be just what you need. read more

Catered - meet was cold and dry. Didn't bring auju until about 45 minutes after we picked up. No one touched the food except the salad. Very disappointed. read more

Small Chocolate Cake Shake. Truly and honestly delicious. You taste the cake, the frosting and the amazing quality. The base chocolate of the shake is also sublime - not too rich. The large is absolutely massive - so you'll be safe getting the small even if you are splitting. Plant-based Garden Dog. Does exactly what it needs to do! Next time I'll do without the tomatoes but the pickle was crunchy & the bun was soft + fresh. Drive through experience was nice and speedy! read more

First timer! Loved the fish sandwich it was so crispy and flaky. The bun was soft and amazing. We had a big party of 15 and were able to get seating around lunch time. The ambiance is a large super busy sandwich shop!! read more

First time visit... came back for more 2 days later. Extensive menu for a hot dog house. Loved the Italian beef... still had to try the dog... perfect dog. Open kitchen to see your food prep... no mystery here. Will be back! read more

I haven't had a Chicago Hot Dog in over 15 years, but I was back in the Chicagoland area in Merrillville IN - and I saw the portillo's so I ordered a Chicago Dog. After a very long wait they gave me my dog to go. It was done correctly - but I really wanted that treat after waiting 15 years...so I ate it in the car. That hot dog was cold. Bitter disappointment ..... I won't go to Portillo's again. read more

Merrillville location: Went through the drive up tonight... Ordered a rodeo burger, onion rings, 2 orders of fries, and an Italian beef. Got home and did NOT have my Rodeo burger! I live a hour away (Illinois) from the restaurant, tried to call and was placed on hold for 20 minutes only to have someone hang up when I said I had a complaint! Called back and was hung up on again when I asked for a manager! I will never stop at an Indiana Portillo's again because this also happened at the one on US 41! I will keep my money in Illinois from now on with Portillo's! You get what you pay for in Indiana- crap service! read more

Everyone loved the food, very large portions . Latisha Price made us feel welcome and went out of her way to make it us and our daughter and three grandkids feel welcome! Yelled for the young lady with glasses to bring me my order, she not only ignored me but went off on the other girl im drive that "that number wasn't outside " when I asked for her name, (which was Ziri) I was told she does this alot and apologized to by Maddie. The GM who I believe is Nic is very disrespectful, I was in the drive thru & I over heard him belittling his employees. Literally CURSING & screaming at them. This behavior is UNACCEPTABLE. I asked one of the employees if this was normal and they told me yes. I am SO disappointed. I hope this company takes action to protect their employees! read more

I hate to say, but this was not a good experience. it's Friday night, so I don't mind waiting a little. Over a half hour for a burger, fries, and hitdog. That was fine... The burger was burnt and cold. Not lukewarm.... Cold. it definitely sat for a long while As did the hotdog. The fries were warm, but they weren't fresh. I know because I could see the large amount of fries they had prepared. Pretty disappointing. Definitely not A good experience. read more

I went here as a member of a very large (60+ member) choir. They were so helpful and made it easy to get our food. I always feel bad being a big group going to restaurants and overwhelming the staff, but they were very well prepared. Decor was super cool and the food was yummy! What more can I ask for! Also, they gave us all cool hats and went around to every table to take pictures for us. Very sweet. read more

Went through drive-through grabbed an order, pretty simple chicken Caesar salad. Asked for extra chicken so I thought maybe I'd get two chicken breasts like in the picture cut up like seen in the picture. Portillo's Merrillville - Caesar salad, what I thought I was ordering - Burgers Near Me - Merrillville, Indiana

Portillo's has made a focused effort to remove everything that once defined what they were. The company went public a few years back; which resulted in the predictable path of stripping down the menu; increasing the prices, and reducing service/quality. It is now simply OK; nothing special, and we rarely go anymore as there are better options. read more

We are not from Chicago but wanted to try Chicago-style hotdogs. Yes, I know this is a chain and perhaps there are better options out there, but for out-of-towners, this was a really nice experience. We all had Chicago dogs and everyone enjoyed them. The mix of flavors and textures were enjoyed by all. A few made substitutions but agreed original Chicago dogs were the best. The fries are crinkle cut and hot. As a fan of crinkle cut fries, I really enjoyed them. We also tried a few different milkshakes. The vanilla milkshake is exactly what you expect. Delicious if you like vanilla shakes, pretty basic if you don't. My son had the chocolate cake shake. He really enjoyed it. The restaurant was pretty busy at lunch time but there was plenty of seating and didn't feel overly crowded or loud. There were both self-service kiosks and counter ordering options. The food took 10-15 minutes to come out which was understandable given the busyness during our visit. Everything was correct and packed nicely. Very positive experience and would go back to try some of their other delicious looking menu items. read more

Foods pretty good but they take forever for how many people they got. Show up like 15 minutes after you place a pickup order and it will finally be done read more

My favorite Portillo's at the present. The drive thru is fast as well as walking in. If they make a mistake they will fix it for you and the service is awesome for that. The decor is vintage and my kids love looking up to see what they'll find in the rafters. My go to is the Italian beef but you won't go wrong with the cheeseburger, hotdog or fish sandwich. Make sure to get a large cheese fry too. read more

Stopped in Merrilville while driving from Chicago to Indy (May 2024). Have been to this locaiton before as well. And we have Portillo's in Indy, so menu etc is the same. Was with 3 coworkers returning from a business meeting. Caught the restaurant at a busy time on a Turs evening, literally a bus full of kids and adults; quite noisy for a while, but then they cleared out. Left a bit of chaos on the tables etc. But we found a cleanish table and wiped it more. Getting our food took a while - even longer than usual - because of the crowd. Food was good when we got it. My go-to is the big beef. Also got a strawberry shortcake, which I had not tried from them before, but it was a #yum. #ReviewsByRL read more

No sport peppers on Chicago dogs and no bread for chopped salad. $60 later and you don't have main ingredients? Road trip stop, we went inside to use the restroom prior to ordering. My gag reflex kicked activated in the hallway. Restroom was gross, dirty, with sticky floors and stopped and I flushed toilets. We ordered two hotdogs and two shakes and waited and waited and waited. Finally our number was called and we received two hot dogs and one shake. Checking our receipt, that's what we paid for- bad on us for not checking. The service counter was a collection of people yelling and things beeping and buzzing, all the while the cold air was blowing in behind us. (An investment in double doors would have been money well spent). My hot dog was sad and had a disconcerting crunch when biting the casing. The fries were dumped in the bag. Costco does it much better. Cannot recommend. read more

I took my grandkids to Portillo's Merrillville for lunch today. I ordered them chicken tender meals and I had a number 1 (beef sandwich) when I picked up my food there was no fries, I asked for my fries and she said you didn't order any, I said I got meals , she said everything is ala carte now . So I go back to the counter I ordered at and it says big as day " all meals come with fries and a drink. " I ask the girl at the register about it and she says " oh yeah well that's false advertising " if you're not giving fries with your meals Don't advertise that you are . I paid over $30 for 2 kids and 1 adult meal , I expect fries . Don't go here unless you want to get ripped off !!! read more

I have eaten at this Portillo multiple times over the years. They are all pretty much the same. if I could give them zero stars I would my family and I ordered food and more than half of my order was missing and the food we did get was disgusting the bun of the hot dog was so soggy my mom couldn't pick it up to eat it the beefs had almost no meat and we asked for it extra dipped with hot peppers and it was super dry half of our guest didn't wat because the ribs, burger, salad, and other items that were missing we called and the girl basically said well it's not our fault that you didn't get the order. We won't be ordering from them anymore read more

Definitely will be driving further to a different location. Order a cheese cup that costs a 1.19$ for a small thing and don't even get it. Fresh, delicious food, great service. Can't forget the chocolate cake! I will be back.

Pretty darn tasty Italian Beef sandwiches. I tried a regular with both sweet and hot peppers, it definitely has a lot of flavor and was much bigger than I expected. If you don't like wet sandwiches, it's probably not the right sandwich for you. Also had a small chocolate shake and it was on point as well. It was also bigger than most smalls out there. I only experienced the drive thru, so I can't speak on the interior. Service was fast considering how slammed they were. Overall, I'd go back for more next time I visit the area. read more
