This was my first visit to Schoops in Crown Point today. It was early afternoon. 2 adults and 3 children. Service today was a 5+ hands down. We had seated ourselves per the sign when you walk in. The side we were on was, at best , half full. Server was very kind, she wiped the table down, was very attentive throughout our meal. If I was rating based on her level of attention - a full 5 stars without a doubt. I had a patty melt, the rest had burgers. Patty melt was that perfectly golden crispy grilled sandwich you always hope to get. Not a speck of soggy. It was average as a patty melt once I had a taste. Not bad, not a wow burger either. The grilling perfection is what saved the patty melt from a 3 star average. Not that average is a bad thing. In my opinion, all our sandwiches were a bit sparing on the amount of beef. Not horribly so, but when I compare to at least one other burger place in town, Schoops would not be my first choice when it comes to the bun and the amount of beef. Fries- lot of bits versus whole fries. Just didn't make the 5 star mark. Ambiance wise - I just wasn't feeling it - at all. In my mind, based on Wiki, I was expecting a hopping 50's style diner. Shades of Jim Dandy's in Hobart once upon a time (if you know, you know, on that place). Not at all what I found when I walked inside Schoops today. Maybe the other side has the flair? This was a low key place, blue vinyl covered booth seats. I will say, roomy booths. It just didn't have the 50's diner vibe or anything 50's vibe. Quiet. It seemed well used. Not run down. Just well used. I am glad the amount of people dining in was low this afternoon as based on the amount of tables, they can pack a crowd in elbow to elbow. If I could give a 3.5 star review for this location I would. My friend and I were on our way to Chicago and she used to live in the area and suggested that we stopped here for lunch. The space is what you would typically expect for a diner, nothing out of the ordinary. Simple space, tables, booths, service counter. I had a grilled chicken sandwich, onion rings, and a milkshake. It was all pretty darn good. The service was adequate. With a little more promptness and personality it would have been great! We have come in a few times lately and it has been perfect every time. So much so I can get my teenagers to be excited about dinner with their parents. Also, the cost with a coupon isn't much more than McDonald's for much much better food, even with gratuity. The servers have been fantastic as well. They are very welcoming and accommodating. I ordered a salad. 75% of the lettuce was spoiled (brown, and some black pieces). Instead of onion, there was just the purple skin of the onion without any meat. When the waitress asked how my salad was, I told her not great. She said, "Oh, wow, okay, I'll get on them about that." And then walked away. The main course was a burger for my oldest and chicken strips for my youngest 2 and myself. Burger was great. Chicken was RAW. Not like questionably pink. RAW. Slimy, shiny, not cooked. We discovered this when my twelve year old took a bite and couldn't chew it. 6 out of the 8 pieces were literally, unquestionably, raw. I let the waitress know, and she offered to get new chicken strips. I told her I didn't want them, just the bill for the burger. My bill was $31.50. We did have 1 soda, fries, and a bowl of soup (and the salad of course, which was on the bill, despite it sitting on the table untouched). There were no issues with those 3 items. However, considering the mistake of serving my children salmonella strips and the spoiled salad...it would have been nice if they only charged for the burger. If I owned the place, I would have comped the meal and given a coupon for a generous discount should my customer decide to give us another chance. I'm also a small business owner, so I know it's not easy to lose revenue...but this was a pretty serious "mistake." Beginning when I said I simply wanted the check rather than replacement chicken, our waitress took on a new attitude unbecoming of a waitress/employee/human being. This continued and worsened when I asked for the salad to be removed from the bill. My total bill was around $25, and of my 3 children and myself, only 1 ate. I have been coming to Schoops my whole life. This visit was bittersweet for me though. My grandpa, for 20 years, ate here every day, usually twice a day, in the two person booth right by the door. He'd take my sister and I with him during the summers when he'd watch us while my parents worked, and it will always hold a place in my heart. As such, when I was home this last weekend having wedding photos taken, it only seemed right to go into Schoops, sit in my Papa's booth, and drink a green river for him there in my wedding dress. He may have passed away 2 years ago, but I felt like he would have loved that I sat in his spot with my husband drinking some delicious peanut butter shakes and having a green river in memory of him. When the waitresses realized who I was, there weren't dry eyes. That's when you know you're at an amazing restaurant...when waitstaff have been there for two decades, and they remember the regular who was there every day with his green van and little white dog, who ordered a burger for dinner with tomato and a plain burger for his little dog. Very disappointed in the food tonight. We ordered three Mickey's, onion rings, curly fries, and a half onion rings and fries. But instead of fries we wanted curly fries my wife explained to the young girl three times what she wanted. The young girl still didn't understand so my wife slowly explained to her one more time. I have been here countless times, and I almost always get a burger. Last night, I ordered a grilled chicken salad. The salad itself was very basic, huge chunks of iceberg lettuce, missing the green peppers the menu claims it has. But, the real disappointment was the "grilled chicken". I noticed immediately that it looked odd, almost like one of those cheap breaded chicken patties that is actually some sort of reconstituted meat product. I took one bite into a mushy piece that was full of water. Disgusting. When the waitress finally appeared, I said "this isn't a chicken breast". Her reply? "Yeah, I know". It was taken off my bill and I had to wait for a BLT so I could eat something. Of course my dining partner had long since finished his meal. I don't get out to Crown Point much but fortunately we were passing through and we were hungry and I immediately started craving a burger. Schoops is your typical retro-style diner. Don't expect a gourmet meal or many healthy options ether. I had a double bacon cheeseburger which was done perfectly. They hand-make the burgers here and the edges are thin and crispy and the centers are nice and juicy. I really like the crisp edges. It gives it a very unique texture. For our side, we shared "Irish Nacho" - fries with cheese, bacon, green onions, and ranch dressing. Now these were excellent. The place was not all that crowded at all. Our server was excellent, very friendly, helpful and attentive. I almost wish i lived closer so I can come back more often. read more

I've been coming to this particular Schoops for years. It had always been good. On my last visit I wasn't as satisfied as before. They raised all their prices across the board while greatly shrinking the size of fries. I know this might seem petty, but the large is now what the small used to be and I can't even wonder what the small is. But the prices were raised. With an average tip a mickey sandwich and a large fry it cost $12 without a drink. With a drink added it would be close to $16 for just 1 hamburger,1 fry and a 1 coke. I'm neither rich or poor, but how could you take a family of 4 out to eat at these prices? While it was still tasty, this is a bit out of my price range for a casual lunch. Kids chicken nuggets are closer to rubber than chicken. That being said I'm OK with all that if you charge accordingly. When you serve food in a plastic basket you can't charge 9 bucks for a burger. Then at the end, after saying you take credit cards you say not Discover. There is no sign that says that. Overall, total disappointment. My boyfriend and I came in this morning for breakfast he got a schooper bowl(which is amazing btw) and I got a waffle. Our food came out and our server informed us that the waffle would be a minute. Waited a few minutes and heard the cook yell to the server that the waffle is f*cked and to have us order something else. At the time there were only a few tables in the restaurant and our table was 12 feet away from the food window, we heard very clearly what he said and I'm sure so did the other tables. Way overpriced, I couldn't believe how out of control the prices have gotten! The cheeseburger was pretty solid, hence the 2 stars. The fries tasted like they were cooked in very old oil and the ketchup was rancid. The shake was extremely runny and tasted like straight up syrup milk. Even the service was terrible, it was clear i was putting her out in every way. The decor has lost the appeal and looks super dated. Maybe if the jukeboxes actually worked?? We ordered cheeseburgers which are a la carte at 6.99 a piece plus a basket of fries. The fries were not salted at all. The burger was nothing special especially for the price. I love Schoop's and haven't been to one in a long time. When the opportunity was presented to me go to this location, I jumped on it. However, I was terribly disappointed. It was seat yourself so we did. A waitress made eye contact with us twice and didn't say anything as we waited to get service. It wasn't until 30 minutes into our stay that someone came up and asked us what we wanted to drink with an attitude. No apologies for a terribly long wait. Instead, annoyance towards us for no reason. 15 minutes past after we ordered a water and a soda and we still hadn't received our drinks. The restaurant was empty. We were one of two tables in the place so there is no excuse for such poor service. After it being 45 minutes without receiving even my drink, we decided to just leave and get Taco Bell. I was just treated very rudely by Maggie who claims to be the Crown Point manager. Our order was wrong on our last visit. We were told they would credit the mistake toward our next visit. We called about a month later, ordered over $100 worth of food, & were told there was no credit for a $6 order of Irish Nachos. Maggie was very rude, said she would not credit the $6 bc it was against policy. I asked her if she really thought I would make up owing us $6 for a $100 order. She was very snotty, saying it was against policy. Isn't a manager's job to make sure things are done properly? I cancelled the order, & let her know how rude she is. She didn't seem to really be phased. She must hear that a lot. Needless to say, we will not be ordering again from the CP Schoop's. read more

I've seen it mentioned in other reviews, but the prices at Schoops have really started to get out of hand, particularly in light of the fact that there's starting to be some real competition out there in the Region. With Five Guys and Culvers springing up everywhere, it is getting increasingly difficult to justify tipping for a similar quality burger that costs 2 to 3 dollars more. Seriously. A double cheese burger is going on nine bucks, and if you're adding bacon, a handful of fries, and a soda, you're bouncing around the $15-16 mark for what's basically a pretty standard burger meal. Why bother? Jukeboxes and retro decor used to be enough to bring the punters in, but nowadays, it seems more dated than quaint. That said, the service is generally excellent, and the food comes out hot and fast. But, man...those prices. Hard to justify any more. I'll pick Five Guys every time, given the option. read more
