Portillo's used to be a great chain, but now it's trash -- especially this Elgin location. Ribs: Expensive, small rack of ribs which has zero smoke and is obviously steamed. Meat is gray and slimy, and dipped in water-thin BBQ sauce which resembles "Open Pit." I couldn't even eat my last order they tasted so bad, and seriously felt like they came from a high school cafeteria. The box claims they were awarded "best ribs" ... But that had to be like 20 years ago, because I'd be embarrassed to feed these to my dog. Burgers: They look pretty, but the meat is typically burnt to a crisp and dried to the point of jerky; tasteless, dried meat. Served on a cold kaiser bun, this burger is typically sold without ketchup or mustard, as if this horrible patty somehow demands to be savored by itself. It does come doused in mayo though, and for a next-tier disappointment, you can order a few pieces of rubbery, un-chewable bacon to top this abortion. Italian Sausage: it obviously accompanied it's cousin, the burger, to the 8th level of hell, because it's burnt to a dry crisp, as well. Beef: The beef is seasoned well and typically good, but you'd never know it, ordering an actual cooked sandwich from the store (you can buy bulk over-priced Portillos beef for home-parties and slowly warm it up yourself). Typically, the kitchens will over-heat the beef, or keep it heated too long, which results in a disappointing, expensive, small beef sandwich with rubbery, hard beef. They don't dip their beefs, but rather serve them in a small cup on the side to-go. Make sure they actually put it in your bag, because that's a 50/50 thing, and when they do, it typically spills all over the place. Chicken Sandwiches: Typically pretty good for the most part -- specifically their crispy chicken sandwich. The oil feels a little heavy on the batter at times and it's served on the same cold kaiser bun as the burger. It still leaves a lot to be desired, but it's tasty enough and the safest bet on the menu. Chopped Salad: Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's horrible. It's consistently inconsistent. When it's good it's worth it, but usually either the iceberg lettuce is limp and watery, obviously not fresh or made that day, or the chicken tastes like chopped rubber. Hotdogs: Decent but overpriced. The bun is usually over-steamed and flattened/crushed. Service: This Elgin location in particular, service is horrid. Sometimes they scan your card and you go; sometimes they scan your card and ask for identification, proof of residency and a hand-writing sample -- it all depends on the cashier. Expect to wait a good 10 minutes at the drive-thru while they don't cook your food properly, or misplace your order. The food runners outside are typically high-school kids, and that's fine, but it looks unprofessional as they stand around waiting for orders, and you're sitting in your car listening to the boys hardcore hitting on the girls, or while they joke around with the window, etc. I'm glad they are having fun at their job, and this isnt rocket science, but it looks bad .... Which leads me to my biggest issue with this location: good luck getting your complete order. Three times out of as many months have they screwed up my order and forgetto give me something. -- a burger, an entire salad or in tonight's case, two pieces of chocolate cake. We called back tonight and talked to a manager named Lucas. We made Lucas aware that this is the third time now they've messed up (we have three kids so it's pretty inconvenient to not have a complete meal). We also demanded to have the missing items credited back to our card (as they typically state you must come back in for a refund, and even then it's in a form of a Portillos gift card). We were refusing to play that game tonight. Reluctantly, he finally admitted that they can refund the original card, once he realized we wouldn't budge. You'd think after the hassle of numerous screw-ups to repeat customers, they'd comp something, as an apology -- nope, they didn't and they genuinely appeared annoyed we dare ask for our money back on goods not received. Sorry Lucas. Sorry Portillo's. So in closing, this chain has expanded beyond its capabilities and quality and service have suffered, yet prices remain high-as-hell for a brand. The new owners (Portillo's was sold for approx $1 Billion in 2014) should be ashamed, because now this place is a glorified Wendy's. read more

How this place has less than 4 Stars is beyond me because there is a line up in the drive thru and plenty of people inside. The beef sandwich never fails me ... it's so delicious. And the people are all so nice and accommodating. Dessert is great too, especially the Italian strawberry shortcake. YUM! read more

I am new to Portillos. When I first relocated here from northern Indiana, I found Portillos to be overpriced burgers and hot dogs. I was mostly irked that they wouldn't refill my pop for free. I am not sure when I changed my mind... one way or another we met friends there enough times that I was introduced to the cheese fries and italian beef... and I am hooked. Tonight I had a chili dog with my cheese fries, and I occasionally have a burger. But mostly the beef. With mozzarella and no peppers. A little loud. Usually crowded. Not "fast" as fast food goes. Before moving to Chicago when I visited Portillo's was at the top of the list toe visit and eat. Since moving to Chicago I have given Portillo's 3 try's (1 Schaumburg and 2 Eligin). Sadly all three visits were bad. Today ordered in fries were cold and ordered was incomplete. I believe this is a result of growing to fast and lowering the quality of the food. read more

I was once a fan of Portillo's but it seems that greed has taken over. I have forever got the Chicken Caesar salad and today was amazed to what is now in it. 1/2 of a boiled egg...was once a whole to one and a half, chicken now cubed and maybe adds up to a few Tablespoons of chicken...was once a few strips. Tomatoes no longer exit in this salad. I will make from home going forward and save a lot of money....Staff BTW is always delightful. read more

Ehh sometimes, great sometimes. Can only give 3 stars because not all the time they make your order right. Ordered the Italian beef combo and didn't give much italain beef. Its a hit or miss. Frozen AuJus and dry Beef is the catering I had from there. Manager said "yes we freeze our product if we get to much sent to us". Really?? Freeze the product? Manager did nothing to correct the problem except says to repackage the product up and bring it back, (how can you do that when you have a group of people all waiting to eat?) I don't know what's changed but the quality has gone down hill. This used to be the place I would bring guests for a Chicago style hotdog or beef but not anymore. The dogs have lost their crunch and the beef lost its flavor. It's too bad because it was such a great chain. I guess Scooby's is the #1 hotdog chain again. read more

The food is good BUT the whole chocolate cake did not meet my standard of what I expected from them , they are known for the moist layers and the quality and amount of chocolate frosting used, the frosting was at the minimum barely covering, I will not buy that again. read more

I called yesterday and ordered a cake for curbside pickup. The website said there was curbside pick up. I ordered with a person on the phone, paid and told them I wanted curbside pick up. My confirmation email said to see the curbside attendant for my pick up unless it was lightening. I went today and pulled into one of the numbered parking spots. I called the number on the sign and I was told that I had to get in the drive thru lane. Seriously? Then I had to wait 15 minutes in the drive thru. Don't misrepresent yourself online or on the phone. FYI, apparently there is no curbside pick up. Every other restaurant I have gone to since the pandemic has done a great job with curbside delivery. read more

Can never go wrong with Portillo's... it's a family fav!! However this last visit I ordered a whole chocolate cake for a celebration. As I was cutting slices, there were egg shell pieces scattered randomly that baked in the cake. It was quite disgusting.. I emailed Portillo's & sent photos of cake and never heard back. I want to like this place so bad but it's so hard! I was so excited for them to open near me but every time I come hear it seriously takes forever. Take just now for example. Everyone loves their chopped salad! Well, give THAT up. Just got one yesterday and it's the second time I got just iceberg lettuce (no food value) very little chicken and pasta you could hardly find. I am very very upset at level of service from this location... I live directly behind the Walmart, so the restaurant is within walking distance and I will never go back. I have been here five times since its opening and I keep getting disappointed. This last visit was the last straw. I was on my way home from work and today was my husbands birthday. He really enjoys the chocolate cake there. I avoid this location at all costs because of the slow service and unorganized way they handle their drive-thru. I was desperate and decided to go to this location. When I approached the drive-thru, I was first in line in the second row. I waited for five minutes just for one employee to take my order. They have no organization. I waited 20 minutes to receive my order. They claimed they still had to frost the cake. I wanted a refund and the boy delivering everyone's orders had to tell the girl at the window four times to get a manager. I heard them specifically ask for LUIGI three times!!!!!! He never came, after getting more upset, they came out with my cake. After which they offered a refund, but the woman was still not the manager. I was already late and to wait for a manager would require more of my time. I threw away the cake because I was so upset and I did not think it was worth it. I want someone from the corporate office to call me back and give me a full refund on this cake! It was what I wanted but was put in a position to take the cake after not receiving the full service that is promised to me. read more

Since Portillos changed hands, the drive thru service has suffered. It takes 15 to 20 minutes from the time the order is placed until food is actually handed to me. They seemed to have forgotten everything they learned from the previous owners. Food is about the same, but I also think its really pricey. I will choose to go to other restaurants in the area in the future. read more

Beware of a short middle aged woman with glasses at the online order pick up counter! She has a very abrasive and nasty attitude smh. Last few times I've dealt with her she's seems very irritable and bitchy. Lots of negative attitude and eye rolling. This place is absolutely  ridiculous.  Even after numerous occasions where they messed up previously and offered to compensate the mistakes, it always seems like something in my order is wrong. We ordered the Tuscan Bacon & Ranch, Chopped Salad,  Lg Fry, and chili. We had gone through the drive thru to order and the woman that was taking the order was impatient and had told me the total before I was finished ordering. Tried to get he back on the speaker with no response.  At the first window the girl had just put her hand out and didn't even give me a total. At the last window where we were handed our  food. We only recieved the Tuscan Salad and Chili. When we asked the girl about the rest of our order she looked confused and had said she had just gotten there.... at 9 pm at night. We asked for the receipt and she had walked away. She came back & proceeded to hand us our fries without a bag, touching the food. We had to ask her AGAIN about our chopped salad. And she had told us they had taken it off the order. Gave us the salad, and handed us our receipt crumbled in a ball. I love Portillo's and grew up eating it and have never had such a bad experience over and over like i did at this location. It's unfortunate. read more

Terrific guidance thru the semi-catering process. @12-14 people. I intended to get enough to have sandwiches for the weekend. I wasn't sure if catering vs pickup vs delivery would be best for our event. I talked with a gentleman (Jim I think?) and he answered my process & timing questions. Full catering wasn't in our budget. DoorDash for delivery is ok but not for our event. Fast packs and hot trays are the best option, everything cut to 3" for sharing, and in-store pickup. I simply needed to finalize the food details. I talked with Isabella the next day to place our order. I got hot dogs, beefs, a tray of sausages. She suggested the beefs be semi dry since my intention was to have enough for the weekend and we'd be reheating leftovers. Perfect. I got an email to confirm. Of course I forgot something --- a Portillo's meal without hot peppers would have been tragic! A phone call and voila! Perfect. I prepaid, that simplified pickup. My only problem - everyone liked it all, devoured everything. Next time I will order at least one extra fast pack! read more

No complaints about the food. Also no complaints about the service. There are very nice individuals that works there and the system to get food out to the customers quickly is second to none. My only complaint is getting my complete order. Getting what I paid for. Check your order before you leave the drive through. They do fix their mistakes, but it typically involves driving back to the restaurant or a long conversation on the phone playing 20 questions. It's becomes a huge inconvenience as well as a disappointment for a place that most consider a staple. Frustrated by the amount of money I've donated to them. Please do better. read more
