And when showing the waitress she was like oh it must be from The weather . NICE EXCUSE !!! then food came it wasn't that bad the shrunk and paella mainly . But the menu said scallops in paella which is what I live and attracted my attention . Last night I went to Port. There were 4 people at the bar and the front of the house was empty. I sat down at a table and was totally ignored by the waitress. In fact she seated a couple who mentioned that they were waiting for another couple to arrive. The waitress proceeded set placemats and menus. She then went through the menu items with them, took drink orders too. I sat there invisible for 25 minutes . She went back behind the bar and refilled the drinks of the bar customers. It seemed very peculiar. This woman at the bar kept turning around to catch my stare acknowledging that I was being ignored. My friends are regular customers and love food. I have dined there with them a few times. This review is not intended to criticize the food. It happens to be good. I'm not a person who posts negative reviews. Got dinner here with a friend and was blown away by the flavor of the food dishes here. Ambiance was also good and the waiters were so friendly. We got the: -Camarao ao alho (shrimp) - the sauce in this is so unbelievably good that we ordered more bread once the shrimp was gone just to finish the sauce -Chourico portugues asado (flaming portuguese sausage) - this is a portuguese classic and comes lit on fire!! -The salad was amazing. -The Bacalhau a bras and the Grill bronzino are amazing. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! After reading all the great reviews left for this restaurant I so wanted it to be good. Alas it was a total disaster. The " restaurant" consists of a small room that holds approximately eight tables. My party of five people were the only ones there. No problem, right? One table should be pretty easy for them. The waitress promised to bring bread and that's all we saw of her for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, everybody's waiting their tongues hanging out for a piece of anything to eat. When the waitress finally arrive, I had to plead with her to come back and check on us every five minutes because I could already tell we were being ignored. After waiting more than an hour to be served , Ihad the seafood paella, and if I tell you, it was salty that's the understatement of the century. It was if they dumped an entire container of salt when cooking the dish. It was so bad I had to send it back and instead of making me a new dish they simply poured some water into the rice and heat it up for 10 minutes. When it came back, it was a soupy mess. on a scale of one to 10 I would give it a 2. My wife had the Bronzino - a whole fish. While it was cooked nicely, once again, it was way oversalted. It seems as if the cook only uses one spice - salt!!! The worst thing about this nightmare was that we had to endure it for more than two hours. Their service is so bad that they could not serve one table of five people - THE ONLY TABLE IN THE JOINT!!! I have to tell you I was so disappointed that I actually stiffed the waitress by leaving only a 10% tip, making sure to write the reason " unsatisfactory service" on the bill. I can't believe there were so many four and five star reviews about this place on yelp. I would dare say it's the worst restaurant I've been to all year. Finally able to check this place out, as we've driven by it hundreds of times. It did not disappoint! When you first walk in. It looks like a bar with some TVs and about 3 tables to sit. The tables were all taken, so j was ready to sit on the bar, but we opted for the back dining area. It's a smallish room that had about 6 more tables. We started with some bread for the table while we were perusing the menu. They also have a pretty good list of Fay specials, which is also posted to the facebook page each day, so I checked there as well. We ordered lots of different fish specials. Everything was good well, flavorful, but not too salty. And portions are healthy. The clams were huge!! And the first seafood dish had soooo many pieces of seafood. I also loved that I could swap my side of rice for a nice vegetable mix of carrots and broccoli rabe that would well cooked! I also ordered cappuccino and espresso which were very good. This is a Portuguese restaurant while not hidden it's on Jericho turnpike in Garden city park it has some of the best food you will ever have. I've had 2 or 3 different dishes here and always excellent. The kabob was great the paella is amazing and huge the best Yellow rice you will have. Plenty of clams mussels, Shrimp and sausage it's the best I've had period. Come hungry and come patient as it takes a bit of time. Oh another note the shrimp appetizer is delicious and 6 to an order. It has a garlic type of sauce on it I forget exactly but outstanding. Lastly this has the appearance of a bit of a dive bar in front with dining in the rear as well as 2 tables behind the bar stools. We've driven by this seedy looking restaurant for years and thought about trying it but never have. Tonight we finally did and we are really glad we did. This is not a fancy place. Outside looks run down. The front bar is not the nicest, but in back is a nice little dining room. Again, not the fanciest, but clean and homey. We sat in back and the waitress was delightful explaining the menu and the specials. We decided against appetizers and had a small pitcher of red sangria. It was a lot lighter than most sangrias. I'm not saying that as a negative. It was extremely refreshing and did not send me to the floor. It was a great sangria to enjoy with dinner. Dinner was a seafood paella and the ox tail stewed special. Both were very good. The seafood in the paella was excellently cooked and the dish had that great taste that a good paella should. The ox tail stew was also very good. A small "complaint" is that it probably could have stewed longer so the gelatin could have broken down more. Otherwise it was very good. The meat was tender and tasty. I don't understand why there aren't more reviews for here and I definitely don't understand why we were the only people in the dining room. This place is the bomb...or better stated it was hit by a bomb! Upon entering on a 3 degree Saturday night, our first reaction was to turn around and leave...couldn't be the same place the Yelp reviews referred to....well we stayed ...found a table and looked around at the lack of ambiance and the bar crowd whooping it up over the games on tv. This is a local Portugese Bar that serves food as an after thought. Had to keep coats on due to heat not being on..was ice cold in there! Ordered two Stella Beers on tap. Tasted them and they were skunky spoiled taste. Sent them back and got Bud Lite...better but not much.. For appys we ordered Sautéed Shrimp in garlic butter sauce..was good with lots of sauce to dip bread. Also got Caesars salad..crunchy lettuce drenched in sauce...could have been prepared better! For mains we went with Prime Rib for Bonnie and the special Mixed Seafood in garlic sauce over pasta for me. When they brought out the Prime Rib it looked like a rib steak on the bone....tasted more like steak then PR. The Portuguese chips on the plate were saturated with oil and not good to eat. My combo seafood was also ok...had tiny mussels, scallops the size of a pencil eraser. A few clams and several shrimp....pasta and sauce were good. Nothing was outstanding or even really good. A real killer was the price of a glass of soda $3.50...honest! This small Portuguese bar/restuarant was a great find. The meal was the best Portuguese food I have had. It was authentic food, more like what one would get as a home-cooked meal or traditional meal. The Port Cafe was open late and we were welcomed late in the evening; sat at the bar. The service was very good and pleasant. Port Cafe is a hidden gem! Can't believe we just found out about this place. Someone we know told my mom and I about Port Cafe. It's basically a Portuguese sports bar that serves a wide variety of dishes. The portions are enormous. Ordered a half size bottle of red Portuguese wine. I'm not a huge red wine drinker, but this wine was pretty good. It was $12 for a half sized bottle, which we got about 3 glasses from! We then started off our meal with the grilled shrimp in lemon butter sauce. The shrimp were awesome! It was $8.95 and came with 6 decent sized shrimp. For our entrees, my mom had a piece of grilled salmon with grilled veggies (broccoli & carrots) and she loved her fish! I ordered the shell steak medium rare with veggies as well. My steak was AWESOME and cooked perfectly! Both entrees also came with boiled potatoes, but they were able to substitute side salads instead! My entree came to $17 for a steak! The prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes and quality of the food. So glad we found this new hidden gem! Cant wait to go back again! One thing to mention is the service is a bit slow...but worth the wait. I saw some people having the linguini with clams dish and it looked excellent. We visited this past monday night to prepare for our upcoming adventure to Portugal lol and we were not disappointed. The facade of this treasure is unassuming. You walk into a bar but the kitchen is where it's at!! Communication with the waitress was a little difficult but she was very sweet so all good there. and I was upset the oxtail soup wasn't available but I got over it quickly while inhaling my paella lol. Paella was excellent. Great portion and just flat out delicious My wife had the salmon. She thoroughly enjoyed it and said that the slight char and consistency was just how she liked it. What the place lacks in luster, bells and whistles it makes up for with a chef and kitchen crew that will hurl your taste buds into ecstasy and dopamine release will be high. Readers beware : I was tispy throughout my entire experience at Port Cafe.....but I loved it! The front of the place is very sports bar like, and the back a simple restaurant that lacks a bit of ambiance to say the least, but the hospitality was good. Tons of affordable wine options including half bottles, bottles and by the glass. I opted to continue drinking bud light. I loved the ample seafood options available and my friend LOVED her paella. I ordered a lobster dish and devoured it. Someone else ordered a chicken dish that was breaded, and covered in mozzerella, mushrooms and a brown sauce- that looked and smelt amazing. Came here with my cousin a few weeks ago. Upon entering it appears to be a neighborhood bar. You can eat there or in the back dining room. We opted for the dining room. If you need ambiance and China this is not for you. The room was pleasant and comfortable it was clean and that's all I care about The food is the reason to go for sure. The paella is better then the paella I had in Spain. Large portion with so much seafood that was cooked to perfection. The sangria was delicious and light. I told my cousin repeatedly that the paella here is as good or better than the one we had when we went to Spain. She finally had a free afternoon and we came here. "A hole in a wall," is the absolute best and kindest description for this shack. Their speciality is salt. They sever it hard and heavy in everything from recycled olives, recycled bread and the salad dressing. The olives are very soft and very salty. Like they've been dumped back into the olive vat over and over again. The bead basket has breads with half or all of the crust missing from it. The prosciutto and cheese appetizer consisted of CHUNKS of salty ham and American cheese, served up on a plate as one will do for a dog/ pet. There is honestly not one redeeming quality in this place. Hopefully the board of health will be their next customer. The world will be a much better place. read more

this was a nice neigborhood find. If you're looking for atmosphere, this is not the place to go, however, the food is delicious and very reasonably priced. Had grilled salmon, a special of the day.
